Det vs Cle
Bonderman is unbeaten in his last nine starts since May 29, the latest a 7 1/3-inning gem against the White Sox last Wednesday in which he struck out six while allowing two solo homers. Bonderman is still unbeaten on the road this year at 6-0, including eight scoreless innings at Jacobs Field back in April.
Against the Angels on Tuesday, Lee, who entered having won six of his last seven decisions, surrendered a five-run fourth inning and ultimately allowed six runs, five earned, in five-plus innings. The left-hander got in trouble when he started falling behind in counts and let five of the first six batters he faced in the fourth reach base.
Mets vs Cubs
Maddux lost his sixth straight decision in his last start, a much-hyped rematch with Roger Clemens. Maddux was tagged with three runs on seven hits, including Craig Biggio's ninth home run leading off the game, over seven innings. After beginning the season 5-0 with a 1.35 ERA, Maddux is 2-11 with a 5.74 ERA since May 1.
Trachsel had his last start -- Wednesday against the Reds -- rudely interrupted by a two-hour, 23-minute rain delay. The veteran right-hander tried to come back after the long lay-off, but couldn't shake off the apparent rust. He allowed three runs on four hits and walked three batters in the first two innings after play resumed. He left leading 4-3, but did not factor in the decision in a game the Mets lost, 7-4. The former Cub beat his old team in his previous start, when he allowed two runs on three hits over six innings in a 6-3 Mets win. Trachsel is 2-3 with a 5.47 ERA in five career starts against Chicago.
LAA vs Tampa
Lackey extended his scoreless-innings streak to 30 2/3 innings in his last start before Ben Broussard brought it to a quick end with a two-run homer. Lackey also had his string of three consecutive starts with at least 10 strikeouts snapped and he lost for the first time in five starts. He allowed a season-high 10 hits and walked five.
After getting only one total run of support in his first three starts, Seo worked with a brief lead against Minnesota before losing control of the game in the fifth inning. He lasted just 5 2/3 innings, allowing 11 hits and seven runs. Seo surrendered five extra base hits.
Min vs CWS
Radke continues to show improvement from his early season woes. Having strong command of his location again while facing the Devil Rays, Radke has looked to have regained his craft of painting corners and recording the necessary ground-outs. Home runs still continue to be the bane of Radke's limited problems and he will have to be careful of givng up too many of those against a power hitting White Sox club at the hitter-friendly U.S. Cellular.
One pitch cost Vazquez in his last start against Detroit Wednesday, as the right-hander dropped his career ledger to 98-98 lifetime. Vazquez cruised through five scoreless innings on two hits against the Tigers before yielding a five-spot to Detroit in the sixth. Craig Monroe's grand slam was the deciding shot in the Tigers' 5-2 victory. Vazquez lost for the first time in five starts but has yielded at least five earned runs in three of those trips to the mound. Vazquez is 0-1 with an 11.12 ERA against Minnesota this year and 1-2 with a 7.20 ERA lifetime against the Twins.
Pgth vs Mil
Duke picked up his second straight win on Wednesday against the Rockies, allowing four runs -- three of which came in the sixth -- over six innings. The 23-year-old lefty was perpetually pitching ahead in the count and manager Jim Tracy was "encouraged by the late life" he saw on Duke's fastball. Lifetime in four starts against the Brewers, Duke is 2-0 with a 2.60 ERA.
Davis has lost two straight wins to blown saves by All-Star Derrick Turnbow, including Wednesday's heartbreaker at San Francisco. Davis surrendered four runs in 6 1/3 innings but exited with a 6-4 lead that slipped away in the bottom of the ninth with Turnbow on the mound. Davis' worst start this season was against the Pirates, when he surrendered right runs -- seven earned -- on a season-high 11 hits in three innings May 29 at PNC Park. He's 2-3 with a 3.73 ERA in 11 starts at Miller Park.
Oak vs Boston
After his best outing in a Red Sox uniform -- and with a new three-year contract extension in tow -- Josh Beckett heads to the mound against Oakland in the opener of a three-game series. Beckett will look for revenge against the only team to beat him at Fenway this season. Oakland roughed him up for eight hits and seven earned runs over 4 1/3 innings on July 14.
Zito was brilliant in his Wednesday start against the Orioles. Oakland's ace faced three batters over the minimum in the first six innings. Zito gave up the lone O's run on former A's catcher Ramon Hernandez's full-count RBI single in the seventh inning.
