    Six-Pack for Friday
-- A young fellow in South Carolina drove golf ball with one arm 263 yards, setting the all-time one-armed long driving record. (He lost his right arm in industrial accident in 1993.)
-- You watch ESPN's Make-a-Wish piece with Eagles and a little kid who has sickle cell anemia, and you observe Andy Reid and what a decent guy he seems to be, and it makes me wonder how the hell Terrell Owens couldn't get along with either him or Steve Mariucci. Just wondering.
-- Quite a managing job being done by Felipe Alou, as the Giants have withstood the Bonds circus and subpar season by Noah Lowry to stay in contention in mediocre NL West.
-- Bonds hit 722nd homer late Thursday, after Piazza muffed a foul pop; Bonds walked back to dugout when he hit foul pop, and the thing came pretty close to being fair.
-- Kansas State's basketball team has four national TV dates next winter, the most they've had since 1990. Arrival of Bob Huggins to Manhattan has gotten K-State on map. Quickly.
-- Guy sitting next to me at lunch Thursday, watching the British Open on TV (said with a ***** Southern drawl) "If the greens at our club looked like that, our greenskeeper would get fired." He sounded pretty sure of that.

Friday: Discussing the thirty big league teams.....
      NL East
Mets-- For a team already in playoffs, they have lot of issues; shaky pitching, shaky closer, and manager who hasn't done a lot to prove he is a great game manager. They hit, though.
Braves-- Amazing comeback from a dreadful start; five-game stretch saw them score 65 runs in five games, most by team in major leagues since 1950. Bobby Cox is amazing.
Phillies-- Awful pitching staff, and now they think Victorino can be a regular outfielder, so either Burrell or Abreu is likely to get dealt for pitching. Who looked at their pitching staff in March and thought this team could contend?
Marlins-- $14M payroll, less than five Bronx Bombers make individually, but Florida got hot and is back in the Wild Card hunt. Very good young starting pitchers. If I was Bud Selig, I'd ban them from trading Willis or Cabrera.
Nationals-- They are going to be sellers in the next ten days; seven teams are said to be in running for Soriano. Patterson's arm might require season-ending surgery; they need pitching and to replenish their farm system with prospects.

      NL Central
Cardinals-- Pitching has gone south; Marquis has allowed 10 or more runs twice in last six starts. Pujols is healthy again, so they'll score runs. Recent seven-game win streak was ended by Atlanta's red-hot bats.
Cubs-- Yuk. Prior, Wood, both hurt. They let Nomar go, and he is leading league in hitting in July. Barrett gets suspended for ten games for punching Pierzynski, who happens to be a catcher for the world champion White Sox. Bad times.
Reds-- Can mash, but bullpen was so bad they had to trade a pair of starting position players to get bullpen help. Freel is a super-sub who remains a sub with Denorfio getting nod in rightfield, replacing the departed Austin Kearns.
Astros-- Third-highest payroll in big leagues, at $104 million, but not $104M worth of production; Bagwell's salary is drain, and Clemens isn't worth the huge slary he is getting to go six innings, at best, every start.
Brewers-- Do they re-sign Carlos Lee? They are contending, kind of, but not really; does Mike Maddux as pitching coach mean they have inside track of acquiring brother Greg to give Brewers a boost down the stretch?
Pirates-- How can anyone root for this team? Went to game at PNC two years ago; only major league souvenir stand I've ever been to that sold vintage college football jerseys (Pitt jerseys of Marino, Dorsett). Pittsburgh is football town.

      NL West
Padres-- Bochy is underrated skipper, but front office is now run by Sandy Alderson, an Ivy League-type. Getting Piazza to play catcher shows that they don't teach common sense in the hallowed halls of academia.
Rockies-- Team has gotten sinker ball-types to pitch, and in strange turn of events, Coors Field is no longer the launching pad it once was. But lower scoring games have been good to the Rockies and now they're contenders.
Dodgers-- Sudden infusion of young talent has helped, but it isn't smart to trade for former Devil Rays; they haven't won a start by Hendrickson yet. Grady Little got abused in Boston, but darn it, Little usually manages pretyty good ballclubs.
Giants-- Oldest team in big leagues, major distractions thanks to the Bonds circus, but they stay afloat and in contention. Now that Benitez is back as closer and Cain is pitching better, can they stay in race all the way?
Diamondbacks-- You look at Arizona being over .500, after an awful start, and you realize that Bob Melvin is good manager. Then you look at prospects Drew, Quentin being called up in a pennant race, and you realize this team has solid future.

      AL East
New York-- When you have lot of older players, you will get more injuries; their starting pitching is shaky and shows little sign of improvement. This is club wit $198 million payroll and they might not make the playoffs. Wow.
Red Sox-- Rookie lefty Lester has been savior; Wakefield is out with broken rib and Clement has been useless. Ramirez and Ortiz will go down as one of the most legendary pairs of teammates to ever play the game.
Blue Jays-- Toronto is fighting to stay close; Hillenbrand got fired this week, for run-in with scrappy manager Gibbons. In a hockey town, can Jays win pennant playing a man down. The walk-off homer Wells hit Thursday was unbelievably big.
Orioles-- Bedard is coming around as pitcher, but team may be trading Tejada, as they now think Fahey is Belanger-type fielding shortstop. Benson has been OK, Cabrera is as erratic as they come. Mazzone needs couple of years to do his magic
Devil Rays-- You can rebuild all you want, but at some point, it becomes important to win games. They were 4-3 at home vs Boston, Bronx before All-Star break, to finish break at 39-50, then they make their move, trading Huff for prospects. So for love of Pete, bring some prospects up? Do they want to win?

      AL Central
Tigers-- This fantasy makes The Natural look realistic, as Jim Leyland close to clinching Manager of Decade honors. They have solid pitching, with closer probably the weakest link, but in near future, Zumaya will fill that role.
White Sox-- In shaky position to make playoffs, needing to either catch Detroit, or beat out two runner-ups in AL East. In defense of their world title, there are rumors they'll trade some starting pitching for relievers, and make McCarthy a starter.
Twins-- Two days out of five, Minnesota sends an All-Star to the mound. Hunter is hurt again, though, so when teams goes on the road, they could struggle. They got their new stadium, though, so anything else this year is a bonus.
Indians-- Very disappointing year, so much they traded their closer to Braves Thursday. Martinez is not well-thought of as a receiver, so first base is in his future. Hafner had five grand slams before All-Star break and wasn't even an All-Star.
Royals-- The Washington Generals of baseball; they lose all the time, but their owner makes a fortune. Look at their team, and who, other than DeJesus, would you want on your team?

      AL West
A's-- Other than Swisher, they can't hit; their best pitcher is on DL more than he pitches, they don't have much speed or much power, but they're in first place. They catch ball well, and they have lot of mentally tough role players.
Angels-- By far, most talented team in division, and finally, it looks like they're playing that way. Young Weaver's arm is a potential problem, but Rivera has provided punch from lower in order, and Kendrick came up from minors swinging hot bat.
Rangers-- Look on the bright side; other two teams managed by Showalter won World Series as soon as he left, so the lack of pitching will take its toll, Texas will fall short again, making Ranger fans one year closer to Buck leaving and Texas being a serious World Series contender.
Mariners-- Look at Arizona, and how Melvin has steadied a sinking ship, and you wonder why Seattle canned him? Mike Hargrove is competent skipper, but Beltre, Sexson have been major busts. Is Felix Hernandez a stopper in Liriano mold?

            Horse Racing Tips

            1) Avoid first-time starters on the rail, especially in sprints, because speed horses breaking outside of them often prove intimidating.

            2) Bullet workouts are good indicators that a horse is ready to roll, but pay more attention to fast works within a week of the next race.

            3) Watch for a thoroughbred entered in a sprint after racing first or second near the far turn in a route before weakening.

            4) Pacesetters with veteran jockeys and the inside post have the edge on off tracks and finish in the money about 25 percent of the time.

            5) Post positions mean more when a horse shows a preference for winning from the inside or outside.

            6) Look for thoroughbreds that exhibit improvement by the decreasing number of beaten lengths and increasing speed figures.

            7) Weight comes into play in routes -- a five-pound advantage is worth about a length.

            8) Horses encountering traffic problems in large fields should be tabbed when part of a small field.

            9) Consider betting on a horse with spotty performances and high odds when a top jockey climbs aboard.

            10) Money management is the primary key to winning. So when you're hot, increase your bets. And when you're not, decrease your wagers. That's because some streaks last for days.

            11) One way to insure a losing streak is to bet on short-priced favorites -- that strategy will l ead you to the poor house. Obviously, you can't win every race so you must be selective.

            12) I knew a turf writing handicapper who refused to bet on favorites that dropped below 5-2. Others I know don't wager on horses below 2-1.

            13) As far as I'm concerned, that doesn't include exotic bets. It's all right to include such favorites in exactas, trifectas and Pick 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, etc. But I also always include a longshot unless the favorite appears truly unbeatable.

            14) I've learned from several handicappers that you must be willing to adjust at any time. You must apply what factors are important for a particular race.

            15) Discount so-called inside information. Bet your own horses. Once in a while you might get a tip that has some validity, but by the time it reaches you, it has passed through many hands and undoubtedly will be overbet.
