  • Rumor has it.....

Philly will deal Abreu for Thames and Miner and all the Tigers need to do is extend Abreu's contract for him to waive his no trade clause.

Id say make this deal in a heartbeat if I was Dombrowski and if thats all they want for him do it quick.

Abreu batting 1, 2 or 3 and playing LF for us will be huge.....if true this is a deal I would make in a flash.

    PEACE

Sounds rather cheap to me......dont get me wrong I like Thames and all and Miner has done well in his brief tenure but these are relatively two nobodies

We got Miner in the Farnsworth deal last year and he is decent but prolly not enough room for him with the big club in the future and Thames is a late bloomer but not much more

Abreu is 32 and I say he has another 3-4 real good years in him (.300 avg, .400 obp, 100 runs, 100 rbi, 20 hr, 20sb)

anyone else agree? I think hes worth 4 years 40 million.....I dunno if Abreu thinks hes worth more but that would seem fair.

Maggs makes 15 MILL but lets face it HRs pay the bills when it comes to contracts

        PEACE

I didn't hear the rumor but I heard Abreau wants his option year (2008) guaranteed at something like $16 million, meaning between 2007 and 2008, I think I heard he has $30 million coming to him. I could be off a little with the numbers.

              FROM ESPN.com:

              Costly pursuit of Abreu
Jul 19 - Teams interested in Abreu must be prepared to pay a hefty price, reports ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick. Not only is Abreu owed $15M in 2007, but he also has a complete no-trade clause. So any new team would likely need to pay for 2007, pay his $16M salary for 2008 and give him a contract extension in order for Abreu to waive his no-trade clause.
ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports that the Phillies are also looking for an impact player and another player in exchange for Abreu.

One team considered a candidate for Abreu's services is Detroit. But according to the Detroit News, when a reporter asked Jim Leyland on Monday about the likelihood of acquiring Abreu, the Tigers manager said "you (meaning the reporter) would have a better chance of managing the Tigers next week than we would of getting Abreu. I don't mean that sarcastically. I'm being serious. That's just the way I feel right now." Another team in the running is Milwaukee, according to Stark. The Brewers recently contacted the Phillies to see what it might take to get Abreu, but the Brewers still haven't decided if they're going to be buyers or sellers.

The Yankees and Mets also have both informed the Phillies that they have an interest in making a trade for Abreu, although George Steinbrenner reportedly prefers Alfonso Soriano over Abreu.

It is not something Detroit has a history of doing lately, and by that i mean trading for HUGE contracts. They are getting the fans and they can make a statement by getting him, even if they have to over pay to do it!

I agree, I would rather see the Mets go out and get another starter providing it doesn't cost any key role plaers on the team
