  • Yankees?

I like Matsui and Sheffield....dont get me wrong. My question is do they need them?

Why dont the Yanks simply start getting some starting pitching? If they trade this Hughes kid they are utterly stupid.

They have CM Wang....now they need to breed a few more youngens. I think its painfully obvious to see you dont need to spend 200 MILLION to field a winner.

    100 MILLION oughta DO IT

2 on base guys.....2 sluggers.......and a bunch of role players who can field the ball and wont hurt you at the plate.

    3 dominant starters.....solid bullpen.....elite closer= WS Championship

    Agree or disagree?

    PEACE

I'm not sure anyone fits that mold that you have laid out - the Mets are probably the closest, but they lack a third dominant starter.

But, back to the topic, I think you're right. I like the way the Yankees are playing small ball because of the injuries. If they keep playing that way when they get these two guys back, that will help a lot.
Their starters really aren't that bad - their ERA is third in the league - but if I had basically unlimited funds, I'd rather have another starter (especially when my best two starters are a combined 78 or so years old) than another outfielder.

    NCAA Foots Plays (65-48-4, +21.47*)
    NBA Plays (4-1-0, +5.92*)

i think after the fact it is easy to say this......during the year you are going to have classic underachievers, overachievers and some guys on the upside and downside of their careers...others will adjust positively to their new environments while others do not...some fit with the new ball club others will not.....

it is an inexact science and it is like a mutual fund in that future performance can not be predicted from past performance......and than again sometimes it takes 2 years to get what you paid for (anybody say carlos beltran?).....

i agree that $200 million is excessive, but another problem it creates is lack of flexibility with moving players...It is as if you backed your team into the proverbial corner......

Teams can win with any type of payroll (except the TB, KC, Pirate) type payrolls......I mean the CWS were not outrageous nor were the AZ Diamondbacks i do not think......The Anaheim ANgels when they won i believe were also reasonable.....

Paying the most has shown there is no linear corelation and banners.......

This is why i love baseball......Still comes down to the players....

The problem is there's very little quality pitching in baseball. There's too many team. In the 70s and 80s most teams had a quality #1 starter and good #2 and #3. Today, some teams have a #1 starter with #3 talent.

I agree with the theory, but I do not agree with not needing Matsui and Sheffield. As a Red Sox/Mets fan, no one strikes fear in my eyes in that lineup like first Sheffield and second, Matsui...Money ballplayers. Jeter is the only other one that worries me at times, but the rst do not scare me like those two do in the clutch. 2 of the best in baseball.

Your saying that you would rather face Jeter with the game on the line then you would Sheffield or Matsui?? OMG are you serious?? I assume thats what you mean by striking fear in your eyes.. And Jeter doesnt fall in your Moneyball players list?? WOW!! I would want Jeter at the plate with basesloaded bottom 9th down a run or 2 or tied in game 7 of the World Series any day of the week..

Yes, I would rather face Jeter than Matsui or Sheffield in a big spot. Jeter would fall 3rd in the lineup, imo. I am not saying that Jeter is an easy out...I just think that in the big spot, Sheffield and Matsui are tougher outs than Jeter.

I can agree with ya on Matsui but with Sheffield the way he swings the bat so hard he strikes out way 2 much IMO for me wanting him there in the clutch.. Matsui is pretty solid in that role though so like i said i will agree with ya on him.. But IMO I would rather have Jeter at the plate with the game on the line anyday of the week to get that basehit to score the game winning or game tying run..

Unless I misread your post, Jeter strikes out wayyyy more than Sheffield...check the stats.

                  Sheffield 8009 AB's/971 K's/1 K per 8.2 AB's
                  Jeter 6517 AB's/1143 K's/1K per 5.7AB's

Interesting stats...since 1999 and only as Yankees, so it does not include Sheffield on ther teams, with Runners in Scoring Position:

                      Sheffield 331 AB's 41K's .344
                      Matsui 509 AB's 83K's .314
                      Jeter 960 AB's 200K's .313

Look at Steve Trachsel's numbers this year. 9-4 in 19 games, a little bit of a high ERA, but he gets run support and 3 times this year he came back into a game after a long rain delay in the middle of a game (which IMHO isn't a good idea) and didn't fair so well and blew his games.

Not to mention he has been one of the most consistant Mets pitcher of the past few years
