    Six-Pack for Tuesday
-- A 21-year old cashed in his college fund to enter World Series of Poker events, with blessing of his parents-- when he won $660,000, it looked good, but how many kids blew their college fund and were simply dead money?
-- I mean, gambling is exciting and fun, but at some point, a kid needs his education, if only to toughen himself up for the knocks the real world will give him, in and out of poker.
-- Am waiting for the next great movie, which will be Hoop Dreams-type documentary on some young person who is going to go "all-in" with his life savings. Will he hit it big? The odds will surely be against him/her.
-- Home teams were 10-2 in baseball Monday; road teams that won did so by 15-3/10-2 scores. Getting harder to get those tough outs on road from sixth inning on.
-- What I'm saying is that Monday night, road teams that scored six or less runs were 0-10. Not very good.
-- With every passing day, I am more and more convinced that the biggest effect of the free agent era is that the front office has become more important than the field manager.

Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts as vacation nears...
      13) Despite being just a dreadful baseball team, the Cubs will probably set a franchise attendance record, since club added 1,800 new bleacher seats last winter. Apparently, only area the Cubs are strong in is that they have good accountants.

      12) Miguel Tejada played in his 1,012th consecutive game Monday. An underrated player; A's made major blunder letting him walk, without even trying to sign him, while they gave Eric Chavez $66 million for six years. Bad move, but not as bad as trading Andre Ethier for Milton Bradley.

      11) Jason Windsor made his major league debut for the A's Monday, 89 years to the day that British royal family adopted the name Windsor (7-17-17). Adam Melhuse should let the kid wear number 17. As it was, Windsor wore number 61.

      10) July 17 birthdays: Donald Sutherland (71) while David Hasselhoff and Phoebe Snow both turned 54.

      9) I hope Barbaro gets better, but how can anyone tell if a horse is in a positive frame of mind?

      8) Chipper Jones had three singles Monday ending streak of having an extra base hit in fourteen straight games, which tied an underrated record Paul Waner set in 1927. Yes, 1927. Imagine if Chipper played in the Bronx- he'd have his own monument, and there would be an hour TV special about this great feat.

      7) Robert Brooks, the chairman of Hooters, passed away this weekend at age 69; he gave so much money to Coastal Carolina's athletic program, they named their football stadium after him.

      6) Tim Wakefield has a bad back, David Wells has just about broken down for good, which leaves Schilling/Lester/Beckett to fend off the Bronx Bombers, and Beckett has been getting tattooed of late. Pena for Arroyo looks bad right now. .

      5) Carlos Delgado is batting .303 on the road, but just .196 at Shea Stadium. Go figure.

      4) Last four games, Braves scored 15-10-11-15 runs, against teams that are both in first place, Cardinals and Padres.

      3) JD Drew's brother came up last night, playing shortstop for Arizona; he made one great diving stop to his left, and got his first hit, too. He'll be an early pick in our fantasy draft in February, for sure.

      2) No team has ever finished last in league in batting and won their division; right now, the A's hold a very tenuous lead in AL West, and they have AL's worst batting average. Unless that average improves, they won win the division, either.

      1) You don't think much about middle relievers, but with the starting pitchers lucky to go six innings nowadays, getting nine outs in innings 6-8 is an area where the weak teams just get pounded. Strong middle relievers will win a division.
