FBI Detain Online Betting Boss at Airport

The boss of online betting group BetonSports, David Carruthers, was detained by US federal authorities while changing flights in the US en route from the UK to Costa Rica yesterday.

In a statement this morning, the STOCKWATCH UK group said it is currently seeking clarification as to the basis of the detention, adding a further announcement will be made when appropriate.

STOCKWATCH UK said the move is likely to be "politically motivated".

Carruthers was accompanied by his wife, who was allowed to travel on to Costa Rica.

BETonSPORTS said today that it was seeking clarification of the basis of the detention. Meanwhile, its operations in Antigua, where it is licensed, Costa Rica and Kuala Lumpur are operating as normal.

A spokeswoman for BetonSports said Curruthers was detained at an unknown US airport at 11pm local time by the federal authorities.

Miami and New York are two main transfer points from Europe to Costa Rica.

Unfortunately only Madrid among European airports has direct flights to Costa Rica and Carruthers was sitting in the transit lounge at 11pm last night when he was approached by Federal agents who issued the traditional friendly greeting of ‘Would you mind coming with us, Sir.’

The department of justice has repeatedly said it regards online betting as an illegal activity under the Wire Act, which prohibits wagers on "sporting events".

Some companies say they have legal advice suggesting firms that take bets on sports are at greater risk of prosecution than those involved in internet gaming. A bill designed to tighten US law on online betting was last week passed by the House of Representatives and has been sent to the Senate
    -------------------------------------------

For the record even though the Internet gambling ban has not passed yet and may not pass this year. I think the Justice Department feels that the laws currently on the books, mainly the WIRE ACT and the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act are still very much valid in regards to online sports betting.

It has been debated that the WIRE ACT may or many not apply online poker and casino games, but does apply to betting on sports.
    --------------------------------------------

What are they holding him for?
    -------------------------------------------

they are most likely holding him for soliciting and marketing too US players as well as accepting wagers from US players over the wire...
    ---------------------------------------------

Wait a minuet...is this guy a US citizen? What's the deal here. Does this mean they are going to go after guys like Calvin Ayre (Bodog)? Here we go. Does anyone else notice how last week and the week before, there were a ton of stories coming out about idiot schmucks stealing their parents CCs and using it to go in the hole ~100K?
    ---------------------------------------------

Whooo---I don't know- Is there a conspiracy prior to the big vote to get more horror stories out to the public about losses and stealing and even detaining would be (witch hunt) mobsters from betting institutions to scare the public into coming on board against internet gambling.
Next -do we see attacks from the Feds to find out just who we are?- Mods-Lock down the pictures and the Files on each of us quick- Aiyeee! . ___OK its time for my medicine now!!----Stay Tuned

This is exactly how i want my tax dollars being spent. Using our federal agents to track down bookies from other countries in airports, lolllllllllllllll. Really shouldnt they all be spending their time hunting down bin laden and other terrorists. Our country needs to get all these religious nutcases that our running our government out of office, because they are acting no differnt then the taliban.
Also they are such phonies and you can see right thru their gambling ban that they passed. Instead of banning every form of gambling in this country, they pick and choose. I guess horses, casinos and lotteries are not really forms of gambling, they must just consider them taxes, lollllllllll.
Lets see why did they not ban those 3 things.
1.lotteries = no way would they ban such a huge money maker for states
2.horse racing= lots of very rich powerful people in this industry
3.casinos =all am gonna say here is "indians" and all their unaccounted for billions they can funnel to the politicians
