              Six-Pack for Saturday
-- Very weird game ended around 2:30am Saturday, as the Braves outlast San Diego 15-12 in 11 innings. Artistic? No.
-- You figure Hudson vs Young would be pitcher's duel, but not even close. Petco Park-record eight homers were hit.
-- Both bullpens butchered game so badly that Hensley, #5 San Diego starter came into game and was losing pitcher.
-- Without getting into details, lets just say Trevor Hoffman is having a bad week.
-- Chip and Skip Caray did game for WTBS; Skip has lost his fastball, and his son is simply a terrible announcer- they spent ten minutes trying to figure out why a guy can't blow two saves in one game-- because second "save" wouldn't be a save, it would be his own win. They never came up with that rather simple explanation.
-- With Eric Chavez sidelined by injury, the A's everyday third baseman is Perez, who is batting a crisp .092; in game they won 15-3 Friday, Perez went 0-6. How can guy stay in big leagues all season when he isn't batting .100?

Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but................
                13) Minor league pitcher with Phillies' system, who pitched in the Futures' Game, says the major league ball is much lighter than the minor league one, and has much lower seams, which makes it harder to throw a good curveball. He likened the big league ball to "a cueball", for its smoothness.

                12) When Adam Dunn recently hit a walkoff grand slam vs Indians, with Reds down 8-5 at time, he became just 15th player in big league history to do so with his team down three runs in last inning.

                11) Want to win a bar bet? OJ Mayo's real name is Ovinton J'Anthony Mayo. For the record, OJ Simpson's given name was Orenthal James.

                10) No matter what poker tournament is on TV, when they say who the tournament director is, it is always Matt Savage. Does anyone else out there run poker tournaments on TV? The guy seems to be everywhere.

                9) We're heading to Orlando this week for 11 days of summer hoop, and we expect we'll see coaches from the Atlantic Sun Conference, which has 10 members currently, and also 19 former members; those 19 schools that left the ASC are spread out over seven different leagues.

                8) Atlantic Sun also has three of the best nicknamed teams: Campbell Camels, Stetson Hatters and North Florida Ospreys. Have to look up what an osprey is.

                7) In case you were wondering, the median number of possessions in a D-I college basketball game was 68.8 per team last season.

                6) Even though Fairleigh Dickinson won at Wisc-Green Bay in Bracket Buster game last year, NEC teams aren't going to be participating in the event next season. Too bad, because their league is getting better.

                5) Louisville football coach Bobby Petrino, who was sniffing around the Auburn job couple years back, has signed 10-year deal to stay with U of L. What are the odds he finishes the ten years in Louisville?

                4) Quote of the Day: "I don't know nothin' about nothin'" Kentucky coach Tubby Smith, one of our favorites, when he was answering question on whether he will hire the former Tulane coach Finney as Director of Basketball Operations, after recruiting season is over.

If he hired him before recruiting season, Finney couldn't go on road and look at players, so UK is tweaking the system to their advantage. Very smart.

                3) September 30; Wyoming plays football at Syracuse, in the Rand McNally Game of Year. Not easy to get from Laramie to the Carrier Dome.

                2) Here's some of how college recruiting works: say a team needs a point guard, but they don't have a commitment yet. They'll offer one scholarship to three different kids, all of whom they'd be happy to have-first kid that accepts, gets the full ride, and the other two are told that the school is no longer recruiting them.

                1) Which leads us to the scenario where a kid is enjoying being recruited; the phone calls, the mail, the attention, but suddenly he gets told that School A and School B are no longer recruiting him. Panic may set in, and the kid takes the next thing that comes along.
