    Six-Pack for Friday
-- Cardinals played 12 innings in Houston Sunday night; in first game after All-Star break, they hosted Dodgers and the game went 14 innings, with St Louis winning, 3-2, on homer by Pujols (what a surprise!!!)
-- Major mismatch; Odalis Perez, who apparently has lost it, vs Pujols, in the 14th; Taguchi just missed hitting one out in at-bat before Pujols. This is why great hitters get walked with the bases empty; never let their best guy beat you.
-- Red Sox lost in 19 innings Sunday, then lost in 11 frames Thursday night, as their home winning streak was ended by the A's and Bobby Kielty's clutch hitting, 5-4.
-- What genius decided only 14 of 30 teams would play the first night after the All-Star break? Bad scheduling.
-- You're the basketball coach at Siena College; your point guard just skipped town, and you need some good news. Why not offer a scholarship to Jeffrey Jordan? So far, only Loyola-Chicago has offered him, and Siena is better than the Ramblers. Even if kid says no, it gets your name out in a positive light. How could this possibly be bad?
-- The upside is huge; if he were even to think about it, you play it up for good publicity. And if the kid ever accepted a full ride, you get an extremely wealthy booster with out-of-this-world connections- you know that Jeffrey is playing on ESPN at least once as a freshman. So instead of wallowing over your losses, get out and think outside the box-- make something great happen; offer Jeffrey Jordan a scholarship.

Friday's List of 13: My plan to make major leagues better
It is time for my annual plea to fix major league baseball. None of these suggestions will probably ever happen, but I've put lot of thought into them, and think they have merit.

      13) Total revenue sharing amongst all thirty teams, just like the NFL, the most profitable league in the world.

      12) Salary cap of $125 million, salary floor of $50 mill You can go over the cap to re-sign your own guys. if this plan went into effect, baseball would be amazing.

      10) You play 18 games a year vs each division foe, in six series, one played each month, unlike now, when you play two series in ten days vs same team. This will lower scoring, if you spread out series games, so you don't face the same pitcher twice in a row.

      9) Eliminate the DH (except for the All-Star Game). We want all major leaguers to own a glove. Or at least know how to use one. Or at least be able to bluff their way through it.

      8) No coaches in between the white lines, once game starts; no trips to mound, no stalling, nothing. Want the game to move? Then stop the stalling tactics.

      7) Each teams plays six doubleheaders a year at home which the players will like, because it gives them six extra days off during the 180-day season.

      6) Every player, whether college, high school or guys from other countries, go through the entry draft. None of this stuff where key guys from other countries get to pick where they play. Let 'em be drafted, and if they don't like it, let 'em go back where they came from.

      5) Baseball seriously needs to make a big deal out of the entry draft. This would be a boon across the board from the minor leagues to fantasy leagues to marketing the game's new stars at the big league level. Finding a Mel Kiper Jr for baseball can't be that hard.

      4) Let the umpires be individuals, as long as they stay in shape and are professional. You are never going to get 60+ guys to all calls balls and strikes exactly in the same way, so let them be human, while making sure they still look like athletes. We like umps to be in reasonable physical condition

      3) No more home court advantage in World Series for the winner of the All-Star Game; what a hideous idea. Only people who like it are FOX, and they could give a rat's ass about baseball, only ratings. League that wins interleague play gets home field in the World Series; if it is tied, whoever had it last year, keeps it.

      2) Name commissioner (Cal Ripken, George Will, Bob Costas, George H. Bush, don't care who), then give him some damn authority to run the game well. No more used car salesmen.

      1) The Baseball Channel. Good lord, the NFL plays games on 44 of the 365 days each year (not counting preseason or Pro Bowl), and they have a network that is on 24/7. Baseball has real games over 200 days a season; how can they not have their own network?
