Six-Pack for Thursday
The Devil Rays' edition............
-- D-Rays traded Toby Hall to Dodgers ten days ago; he has already requested a trade from LA, since he's locked in as a backup to Russell Martin. Apparently, he hasn't been told that he isn't a very good catcher. Or hitter.
-- Rays then traded Aubrey Huff to Houston, and made out well, getting prospects Zobrist, Talbot. Zobrist heads to AAA, fueling specualtion Julio Lugo is now on the block.
-- Top prospect BJ Upton (28 errors at SS) was moved to third base, where he will be called up soon to replace the departed Huff, who was hot hitter before the break, raising his batting average to .283. Zobrist will wind up as SS for the Rays, unless they land another one in return for Lugo.
-- Wigginton will go back to 3B until Upton is called up, as Tampa Bay goes with 12 pitchers, with the return of Ruddy Lugo from the DL (Julio's younger brother). Unfortunately, the anemic bat of Travis Lee returns to the lineup at 1B.
-- What will happen to another prospect, Delmon Young, who was suspended for 50 games earlier this year for run-in with an umpire? I see him as the Rays' rigthfielder in Sept.
-- Devil Rays have never won more than 70 games in single season; they definitely would have with Huff at cleanup the rest of the way, but now it will be a dogfight. Hopefully, the young prospects (Upton, Young, Dukes) can energize the team over the second half, and keep Devil Rays improving.

Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..................
13) Red Sox once traded Freddie Sanchez for Jeff Suppan (was five-player trade, with relievers Mike Gonzales, Brandon Lyon also involved) which goes to show you that even good teams make stupid trades (Zambrano-Kazmir; Ethier-Bradley; Contreras-Loaiza) but the teams with big money can afford mistakes, while poorer teams have little or no safety net.

12) NBA salary cap goes up from $49M per team to $53.14M; ten years ago, it was $24.4M per team, in 1987, it was $4.9M. You wonder why coaching in this league is almost impossible Even the guys on the end of the bench make more than the coaches, so who listens to the coach? Um, no one.........

11) Charlotte Bobcats still need to spend $12.5M to get up to the league's salary floor of $39.85M, so expect them to step out and buy someone before free agency ends. At least, we hope they're going to buy someone.

10) Meanwhile, the single dumbest franchise in history of pro sports, the Knicks, are $44M over; no, not over a salary cap, they're $44M over the luxury tax threshold!!!! They won 23 games last year with a coach who made another $10M, and they're paying out $50M next season, to people who won't even be there. Did I mention that inept human beings run this team? And they're still all rich. Go figure.

9) That said, how great must it be to own cable companies? The Dolan family owns Cablevision, which makes so much money, they probably laugh at the Knicks as being a good tax write-off. Only in America……….

8) The Knicks in 82 hideous games last season, managed to start 42 different lineups. Isiah Thomas has an easy act to follow, coaching-wise, at least. Of course, his team is awful, but at least they'll run a lot and be more fun to watch.

7) Which reminds me that the funniest TV this summer is Knick summer league games from Vegas, with play-by-play guy Gus Johnson making Isiah sound like a combination of Red Auerbach, Chuck Daly and Pat Riley. They even miked Isiah during a summer league practice. I'm telling you, teams owning their own networks kills any hope for journalism, but it greatly enhances the odds of high comedy being aired.

6) Toronto Raptors, spurned by American players for years, are expected to bring in couple more players from Europe to supplement their bench for coming season, in their attempt to re-create the Phoenix Suns. Good luck.

5) Oklahoma tried to hire Geno Auriemma away from UConn's women's team before they hired Jeff Capel awey from VCU. Would have been an interesting experiment, but with Geno's son a senior in high school this year, the timing was wrong.

4) Next week's BC Open has been moved north, to Turning Stone Casino, due to flooding in the Binghamton area. Not sure if this will be a temporary move, since Verona location is realistically lot more attractive than En-Joie, the usual home course, and the only course on Tour without a driving range on premises. Being near a casino can't hurt things.

3) Speaking of PGA tournaments, why is the PGA losing its permanent presence in the Chicago area? I used to work with a guy from Illinois, who told me about going to the Western Open as a kid; he was also the first person to tell me about this new young golfer, Eldrick Woods. At some point, does the Tour have an obligation to its past? Apparently not.

2) Lance Berkman is hitting .435 this season in his first at-bat of the game.

1) Winning pitcher in '97 All-Star Game was one Jose Rosado, who threw 203-175-208 innings for Royals, at age 22-24, then was done for good with arm problems at age 25. His career record was 37-45, 4.27, allowing only 715 hits in 720 IP, pretty good. Luckily, he got a couple of big money years in before the arm went, but existence of a pro athlete is fragile, indeed.

Wednesday's List of 13: Questions, and the Rice issue......
13) You own major league team; for same salary, you can add either Derek Jeter or Alex Rodriguez, but not both. Which one would you take?

12) If salary was a factor, I'd skip both of them, take Michael Young, spend the extra money on pitching, win the pennant.

11) Why isn't our government doing more to help people on the Gulf Coast? We cleaned up New York City after 9/11, we certainly are doing way too much in Iraq-- doesn't Louisiana count as part of our country? Do they pay taxes?

10) Our friend John Graney e-mailed detailed statistical info to us today, showing why, in his opinion, Dwight Evans was a better player than Jim Rice. From strictly numerical position, Evans does stack up well, but Evans never had responsibility of being "the man" like Rice did, hitting in middle of order.

9) Interesting discussion, though, since Evans was superior as fielder. In one four-year period, Rice hit into 131 DP's, but he also led the league in total bases four times. Evans played four more years than Rice, appearing in 500+ more games.

8) Baseball-reference.com uses statistical parallels to compare different careers; from age 25 on, Rice's numbers most parallel these players: Willie Mays-Duke Snider-Dick Allen-Orlando Cepeda-Billy Williams. Only Allen isn't a Hall of Famer.

7) Evans' parallels, from age 29 on, are: Sixto Lezcano-Reggie Smith-Rick Monday-Jack Clark--Bobby Bonds-Dale Murphy- Dave Winfield. Only the last two of those are Hall of Famers.

6) In reality, Evans was ahead of his time, a Moneyball-type player who got lot of walks and had terrific on-base %age. If you had gone into Kenmore Square at any time during 70's and asked who would a Sox fan rather have, Rice or Evans, you would have been given a sobriety test.

5) What is the over/under on reports ESPN will have from the Cowboys' training camp once Terrell Owens reports?

4) Did anyone think Ozzie Guillen was serious when he had a Kansas City pitcher warming up late in the All-Star Game? As if Guillen was actually going to put his potential home field edge in World Series in hands of Mark Redman. Yeah, right.

3) They make a big deal out of adding player to each squad in Internet voting, but neither guy got into the game.

2) If Pete Rose is going to be banned for life for whatever it is he gambled on, couldn't FOX give him a segment on the NFL football pregame show, picking games? Wouldn't they get big ratings, really, really big ratings?

1) Is USC headed into a hornets' nest when they play at the Arkansas Razorbacks September 2? Trojans hung 70 on the Hogs last year in the Coliseum, but with new QB, new RB and 60% of new offensive line, opening road tilt could be dicey.
