In the past four seasons the following five teams own the best records after baseball`s Mid-Summer Classic.
(5)
Boston Red Sox (177-120)
The Sox have won the AL Wildcard every year since David Ortiz came to Beantown and he has been a driving force in Boston’s second-half charge. In three previous seasons with the team, Big Papi has gone deep 63 times and driven in 189 runs after the All-Star break.
Tim Wakefield is the BoSox longest serving starter and he always pitches his best during the second half of the year. More than half of the knuckleballer’s career victories have come after the break and he has pitched 21 complete games in that span.
(4)
Houston Astros (173-120)
The Astros were nowhere near the top of the division in the past two seasons at the All-Star break, but they had a huge second half both times to grab the NL Wildcard. Andy Pettitte was a great second half pitcher during his days in New York and he carried that into last year, going 11-2 in the final three months of the season.
Houston has played 37 games over .500 in the past two years after the break.
(3)
St. Louis Cardinals (181-113)
St. Louis has won its division three times in the past four seasons and a lot of that can be attributed to their play in the final few months of the season. They won 50 games twice in that span and won the NL Central by at least 11 games each time.
Reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Chris Carpenter has been the team`s best starter in his two prior years with the club, compiling a 14-2 record after the break, which includes five complete-game victories.
(2)
Oakland Athletics (183-111)
Eric Chavez is currently in his ninth season with the team and he has been a huge part of Oakland’s usual second-half turnaround over the past several seasons. He is hitting nearly .300 in his career after the All-Star Game and his slugging percentage is over .500.
Barry Zito has been with the club since 2000 and he always seems to turn it on after the break. His post All-Star ERA is just above 3.00 and seven of his nine career complete-games have come during the second half of the year.
(1)
New York Yankees (187-108)
Jason Giambi is no stranger to second half comebacks. He went through several second half charges during his days in Oakland and that has followed him to the Bronx. He hit 22 homers during the second part of the 2005 season, after hitting only 10 during the opening half of the year.
Throughout his long career, Mike Mussina has won more than 30 games during each of the final three months of the season and has earned 15 complete-game shutouts in that span.
