      Six Pack for Sunday

-- Travis Hafner is hitting .320 with 25 HRs, 74 RBI; with the bases loaded, he is 7-10 with five grand slams, the first guy to ever do that before the All-Star break. But he isn't in the All Star Game, which really devalues the game, doesn't it?
-- Liriano isn't in the game either; he is only 10-1, 1.83; you wouldn't want him in the All-Star Game, when you can have the immortal Bobby Jenks there. Good lord.
-- Colorado-Arizona was 1-1 in 8th inning Saturday, when the bullpens imploded; Rockies scored seven in top of 9th to take 8-1 lead, then Arizona scored six, had the tying run on base before Diamondbacks survived, 8-7.
-- Astros are 1-3 in Clemens' starts. So much for that move.
-- Angels' Jered Weaver (now 6-0) is really good.
-- If playoffs started Sunday morning, AL teams in would be: Boston-Detroit-Oakland-White Sox (five-game lead). NL teams would be: Mets-St Louis-San Diego-Dodgers, with LA passing Cincinnati for Wild Card lead (by 0.5 games) Friday The NL Wild Card, right now, is three games over .500, as are the stumbling A's, but they still lead AL West.

        Sunday's List of 13

        Offseason report: Cleveland Browns
        13) Cleveland is going with second-year QB Charlie Frey as its QB; right now, Ken Dorsey is the backup, although there are rumors Vinny Testaverde might be called in as a backup. What? Sonny Jurgensen wasn't available? I don't know if Frye is any good, but I'm pretty sure he better not get hurt.

        12) Browns won their first and last road game in '05, but lost the other six, by average of 8.5 points; I was impressed with their effort, with 41-0 home loss to champ Steelers in Week 16 their only dog game in a 6-10 season. Effort isn't enough though-- their win over Ravens in season finale was their only win in six divisional games (losses by 14,13,13,3,41 pts). Browns need to get a lot better.

        11) Frye started the last five games, going 2-3, with losses by 6,3,41 pts, but in last three games, Cleveland scored only one offensive TD on 37 drives- the Raven win was sparked by a long punt return and sturdy defense.

        10) Even though Browns were outscored 30-12 on first drives of third quarter, a closer look shows them allowing 20 of the 30 points in first six games- only once in last seven games did a foe score on first drive of second half, so they improved there. On offense, they managed four FG's, three turnovers on such drives. Not good. Browns outscored foes 31-27 on game's first drive; not bad.

        9) Why is Frye's development critical? Browns were 28th on third down (33%), last in red zone (3.43), last on 80+ yard drives (0.66), 29th in green zone (2.67). In short, this team needs an offense that makes plays. Last year's didn't.

        8) Scoring TD's is name of game; Browns scored 19 on 170 drives last year, an 11.2% rate that was 31st in NFL; they turned ball over 31 times (-9 turnover ratio) and went 3-and-out 35.3% of time (25th). A healthy Kellen Winslow will open up the red zone and move the chains little more often.

        7) Browns were 6-4 last year when their field position margin was better than -8; they were 0-6 when it wasn't, so moving those chains will create better field position. Defense is Crennel's specialty, and Browns weren't bad there last year.

        6) Talent level needs upgrading; Cleveland was 4-4 last year, in games decided by less than seven points, 2-8 in games decided by 7+ points. Crennel and his staff can coach, but the drafting on Lake Erie has been such a horror that Browns' talent level just isn't up to typical NFL standards.

        5) This spring, Cleveland drafted two players who will help in rushing the passer and stopping the run; they drafted a WR whose development is now more important, since Edwards is expected out until late October. A veteran backup QB would be a nice addition at some point-- not someone to challenge Frye, just someone to prevent a disaster if he gets hurt.

        4) An x-factor for Brown offense is return to field of Winslow if he has recovered from injuries, he provides Brown offense with a weapon he hasn't had here before. If he doesn't do lot, he's just another first round bust for Cleveland.

        3) Browns scored 10 or less points in five games last year; they ran ball for less than 80 yards in nine of 16 games. With foul weather on Lake Erie in December, they really need to develop a running threat, if only for their late season games.

        2) Other than a Thursday night game at Pittsburgh in Week 14, Browns are under the radar nationally; they open with winnable home game vs Saints, but then play only one more home game before Week 7. Warm-weather Bucs visit Lake Erie in Week 16. Cleveland has three straight home games in November.

        1) AFC North has Super Bowl champs, the much-improved Bengals and an angry bunch of Ravens with a new QB-this will be tough division to move up in, but Cleveland's offense has so much room for improvement, you never know. They need Frye to be the latest MAC QB success story, though, and they need it this year.
