    Six-Pack for Friday
-- When Carl Crawford stole 2nd, 3rd and home in the same game Wednesday, he was first player since Tom Goodwin in 2000 to do that, not Eric Young, as we said yesterday.
-- Frank Thomas crushed a 3-0 pitch for game-winning HR in 9th inning Thursday, as A's somehow beat Angels in a game that Angels squandered chance to break game open when they had bases loaded, none out in 7th inning. Chad Gaudin deserves much credit for escaping that jam.
-- Hamilton led 15-10 with 3:00 to go in half at Montreal; as Alouettes took safety to improve field position, Hamilton was called for too many men on field, which took the safety off the board. Montreal wound up winning, 27-21. Whoops
-- A's reliever Scott Sauerbeck wears #11; can't remember a pitcher ever wearing that number before. Bob McClure wore #10 for the Brewers many years ago, as Danys Baez does for the Dodgers these days.
-- Royals are now 14-7 in last 21 games; at 30-54, they're not good, which makes fact that they've won Mark Redman's last seven starts pretty remarkable. They lost his first seven starts, which makes it even a little more unusual.
-- Orlando Cabrera reached base in his 63rd consecutive game Thursday, the longest streak since at least 1960- here are the top four streaks since '60.........unofficially, longest streak ever is Ted Williams (84 in row in 1949).
    1-- Orlando Cabrera, 63
    2-- Barry Bonds, 58
    3-- Wade Boggs, 57
    4-- Ryan Klesko, 56

Friday's List of 13: 13 of the more difficult things in sports
The following list is 13 things that are difficult to do in sports I probably left some good ones out, so feel free to make your own list………..

      13) Running a marathon; why anyone would willingly run 26 miles (and 385 yards) is beyond me, but people do it. Hell, if I drive 26 miles, I'm looking for drive-thru window at Wendy's, but that's just me.

      12) Winning money consistently at racetrack; after years of observing gamblers, just think it is tough to consistently beat this game. So many variables make it difficult. After watching TVG a lot, would never go to races without their experts' knowledge, and even they struggle to pick winners.

      11) Hockey goalies have to deal with the slap shots, screens, interference, deflections; one soft goal can undo whole game. No wonder an old-time goalie once snapped and threw his steak against a wall when asked a simple question at dinner. By the time the steak hit the floor, the goalie had retired.

      10) Speaking of hockey, it is the toughest sport to officiate; you have to break up scuffles, be right on top of all offsides call and icings, drop pucks for faceoffs, and avoid getting whacked by either a stick or a puck. All while ice skating.

      9) Bowling a 300 is lot harder than getting a hole-in-one; it takes 12 strikes to bowl 300. One lucky stroke can get you an ace, not that I've ever come close to one.

      8) Getting on the PGA Tour is tough, and so is staying there; you have to win over $500,000 a year to keep your card (top 125 on money list) each year. Once you win a tournament, it gets a little easier to stay, but the Nationwide Tour has guys who've won on the big tour, so there are no guarantees. Seems like every suburban kid in America is trying to become a golfer-the competition is fierce. And in golf, if you play lousy, you don't get paid.

      7) Which reminds us of Vijay Singh's caddy; now this job pays really well, because Vijay makes a fortune, but he spends ton of time on practice green and driving range, so working for Vijay is no day at the beach.

      6) Winning Main Event at World Series of Poker- with 8,000 entrants, many of them younger, more reckless players used to playing on Internet, and then the pros, who are geniuses at the math and psychology of playing, your $10,000 doesn't have much chance of being turned into $10M, unless you're really good and really, really lucky.

      5) Offensive tackles, especially the one on QB's blindside, often have to block speed rushers by themselves; everyone in the park knows when a tackle whiffs on a block, but if he makes ten good ones in row, well, that's what he gets paid for. Very difficult and under-appreciated job. No team wins without a good offensive line.

      4) Building a winning college football program requires a ton of good recruiting, and it also requires time, since most of the freshmen redshirt. You can win in basketball getting two or so keys guys a season- football takes lot more people than that. You look at a program like Vanderbilt, the only private school in the SEC, and it just seems like an impossible job, to win consistently there.

      3) Riding a racehorse; it looks simple enough, but go to a track sometime, look how big and powerful the horses are, then see them running in realtime, in traffic, and know that one false step by the horse can leave you paralyzed. Dangerous stuff.

      2) The most underrated record in sports is Hack Wilson's 190 RBI in one season; if he played in New York, it would be famous, but since he was a Cub, his record won't be broken or given its due. And that is too bad.

      1) Still think, at the end of the day, hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports; the ball comes in at anywhere from 65-98 mph, the pitcher might throw one at you to back you off the plate (intimidate) you, the crowd is yelling, and even if you do hit the ball hard, there are eight fielders who will try to catch it. It is so difficult that even greatest players make out 60% of the time.
