    Week 4 CFL

Hamilton (0-3) @ Montreal (2-0)-- Not only did Alouettes have a bye after 32-14 pasting of TigerCats in Hamilton two weeks ago, then Hamilton went to Calgary and blew 22-20 lead in last 0:30, allowing Burris to hit two key passes that set up 45-yard FG to win game. Bitter loss. Two weeks ago, Als outgained Hamilton 399-297 and forced five turnovers. TiCats were outgained last week, 515-277, losing despite four takeaways.

      Six-Pack for Thursday
-- Carl Crawford became first player in 10 years (Eric Young) to steal second, third and home in same ballgame.
-- Royals have 51 wild pitches this year; opponents have 16
-- Ryan Freel of the Reds isn't well-known player, but he is versatile player who is good fielder, hustles like hell, does lot of things to help his team win games. A valuable sub.
-- Brewers are close to being contenders in weak NL, but it is their defense that holds them back. Rickie Weeks is poor as a defensive second baseman. Is he an outfielder?
-- As soon as I typed that, 45 seconds later, Weeks hits the game-winning ground-rule double in 13th inning for the win
-- Reds lost five games in row now, blowing leads in both 10th and 13th innings. Playoff teams don't lose games like this one. NL Wild Card race is really going to be wild ride.

Thursday's List of 13: Random thought on a summer night
        13) Andy Katz of espn.com wrote article on 7-foot-3 Hasheem Thabeet from Houston this week; we wrote about him back in April, after he dismantled Illinois Wolves in second half of a close game at Kingwood Classic.

        12) Thabeet is headed to Storrs to play for UConn, but I had to laugh in April, when I was told the grades on his transcript are written in pencil. Supposedly, he is bright kid, but if he is 7-3 and as athletic as he is, thats just icing on the cake.

        11) July recruiting period starts in earnest Thursday; by time I see these kids down in Orlando (July 23-31), they'll have had an active month of playing ball, and coaches will be anxiously awaiting their August vacations.

        10) Now that July 4 is past, our football research has picked up for the '06 season; we see that Vanderbilt's first two games are at Michigan, at Alabama. Who made that schedule, the football coach or the accountants?

        9) I had to laugh when we hear about North Korea testing its missiles, then hearing another report about how thrilled their eccentric dictator was when the Clinton administration gave him a basketball signed by Michael Jordan. Seems like all the guy wants are the same incentives that Iran is getting to put their dangerous toys away. What a freakin' world we live in.

        8) Arizona outfielder Eric Byrnes can recite all 43 presidents, in order. Have always liked Byrnes; still disappointed the A's traded him, although I guess Jay Payton is slightly better.

        7) A's screwed up trading Andre Ethier for Milton Bradley.

        6) Why is chili so popular in Cincinnati? Gold Star, Skyline-- it is impossible to watch Reds' game on dish without seeing lot of chili commercials. Anyone have any ideas on this?

        5) OJ Mayo has apparently told the USC folks that he'll be playing for the Trojans. Mayo, who will play his sixth year of high school ball this year (he starred as a 7th-grader), is the best player in the high school Class of '07.

        4) That said, no way are USC people resting easy, as Mayo is still offically uncommitted; he could take endorsement money and play in Europe or NBDL, or he could stiff the Trojans and sign with Kansas State. When you are hardnosed recruiters like the USC folks, you know all the tricks, so until Mayo is on the dotted line, they'll be lot of sleepless nights.

        3) Speedy Claxton gets $25 million for four years from Hawks; obviously they feel insulted that the Knicks have been a lot dumber than they have, and they're trying to close the gap.

        2) I like the rule that says every team has to have a player in the All-Star Game; somebody has to remind the eastern media that there are still 30 teams in major leagues, not three or four.

        1) If the 12 casinos in Atlantic City stay closed because of a budget impasse in the Garden State, New Jersey will lose out on $1.3M in tax revenues. Every day.
