List of 13: Notes from NBA Draft, elsewhere.....

No numbers today, because the draft gives us too much stuff to limit to 13 or 26 notes..............
-- We hear a lot of bad things about athletes, so I am glad to post this note, which comes from friend Jim Cusack, a Boston Red Sox fan and avid reader of the Boston Globe. This article was written by Gordon Edes.............

"How good does it feel to be in the Sox clubhouse these days? .......listen to a guy you may never have heard of: Jason LaRocque, who serves as team's bullpen catcher.

Moments after Mike Timlin retired Paul Lo Duca on a fly ball to Coco Crisp for final out (Tuesday), Sox pitchers hustled LaRocque out to the players' parking lot, where he normally stashes his 1994 Ford Explorer, the one that was already on its last legs even before recent accident left it with a bashed-in front end.

There, they gave him the keys to a brand-new Ford F250 truck. The co-conspirators who hatched this plan: Timlin, Curt Schilling, and Josh Beckett. ``I can't put into words how I feel about the guys," said an overwhelmed LaRocque."
    Good for them.

-- Dan Patrick is good choice for host of the NBA Draft, but couldn't they come up with a former team exzecutive to talk about what happens on Draft Night? Like there aren't 1,000 unemployed guys who would pay to be in that role.

-- Why was Mr Met at Fenway Park Wednesday night?

-- When writers saw UConn's Marcus Williams at the draft, they locked their laptops to their workstations. Why didn't he get picked earlier in the draft? Because he's a thief, thats why, and you have to trust your point guard.

-- By the way, the draft was presented by Sprite and smirking commissioner David Stern, who plays a room like no one else.

-- Denver was 25-31 with Kenyon Martin, 19-6 without him, so it is safe to assume he is history with the Nuggets.

-- JJ Redick will be a bust as a pro. Adam Morrison will be a very good pro, I think.

-- Why don't the Hawks pick a point guard? Are they trying to be awful every year?

-- Mark Cuban and Dan Marino are in a group trying to buy the Pittsburgh Penguins, to keep them in the Steel City.

-- The Red Sox are crushing Pedro; when Lastings Milledge dropped another flyball in left field, the Mets checked out for the night, and fall to 5-6 against the American League.

-- Somewhere in back of my mind, with the Mets safely ahead in NL East, I think their announcer, Gary Cohen, is glad they are losing to Red Sox, since it hurts the Bronx baseball team. Cohen seems to have a deep-seated hatred for the Bombers.

-- Portland made five trades tonight, got ripped by the ESPN guys, then their GM was interviewed, and he was laughing. I think he was glad to be rid of Sebastian Telfair.

-- Jay Wright was only college coach to log valuable airtime on ESPN, although Rick Barnes was also there.

-- Isiah Thomas got pounded for drafting Renaldo Balkman, but at least Balkman tries to rebound and can run the floor. I would have taken Jordan Farmar, but thats just me.

-- Jerry West is the NBA's best executive; he got Rudy Gay, whose sporadic effort drives me crazy. Mike Fratello has his hands full getting Gay to fulfill his vast potential.

-- I'd rather have Villanova's Foye than Sebastian Telfair.

-- Seattle drafted a guy who scored three points a game a year ago in Belgium; imagine if the Knicks drafted him? I mean, the 10th pick in the draft, and they pick a guy who scored three freakin' points a game in Belgium????????????

-- I heard the name Thabo Sabolosha on TV, and I thought it was someone sneezing, but Fran Fraschilla says he's good.

-- Rodeny Carney's mom made the 1980 Olympic hoop team. Carney wasn't listed as a top 250 high school senior; he says it was because he didn't play AAU ball, which makes perfect sense; if the gurus don't see you in the spring, then in their way of thinking, you don't exist.

-- Only reason Carney went to Memphis is because Qyntel Woods went straight to pros, instead of going to Memphis. Carney got his scholarship.

-- Jay Bilas makes every player sound like the first kid cut off your high school's JV team .

-- Utah once had pretty good luck with a power forward from Louisiana Tech, so no surprise they took Paul Millsaps, who led the nation in rebouding three years in a row. Karl Malone he ain't, but he's got chance for pretty good career.

-- Last season, 19 second round picks made NBA rosters.

-- Dick Vitale even yells in the summertime.

-- No one in Europe ever misses a shot; I'd like to see clips of these European kids' deficiencies, not just them draining ton of 3's. Hard to tell how good these kids are.

-- All in all, an entertaining evening, although the Pedro-Sox game was a bust. Casey Fossum pitched well in his first game with a catcher who can actually catch, so Tampa Bay gets a little better with addition of Navarro and Seo. I think Portland did well; they acted boldly at least, and thats a good thing.

Orlando screwed up taking Redick, Seattle's pick was puzzling and Isiah got abused just for being Isiah.

-- One last thought: if UConn had so many great players last year, how the hell were they down double digits to UAlbany in the second half of first round NCAA game last March?

      Six-Pack for Thursday

-- Ole Miss is expected to be improved this fall with transfer QB Brent Schaeffer, but Rebel fans, coaches will rest easier when he passes that last class and becomes officially eligible for fall semester. Rumor had him on campus for the transfer orientation Wednesday, so thats a good sign.
-- In his first thirteen starts this year, Brandon Webb gave up total of just two first-inning runs; in his last four starts, he allowed 11 runs in opening frame.
-- Barry Zito has four losses this season; in those games, A's scored 2-3-0-0 runs.
-- How bad is the National League? KC Royals are 8-6 in interleague play.
-- Two awful (or great) trades from the past: Nov 14, 2003, Giants trade Nathan, Liriano and Bonser (all current Twin contributors) to Minnesota for Pierzynski (played one year for Giants)………July 31, 1997, Seattle traded Lowe, Varitek for relief pitcher named Heathcliff Slocumb. Whoops.
-- Think Lloyd McClendon will be smiling this weekend? After being fired by Pirates last fall, McClendon hooked up as a coach with Jim Leyland's Tigers (best record in major leagues right now). Detroit visits PNC Park this weekend, and will find a dreadful Pirate team that lost its last thirteen games. Guess it wasn't Lloyd's fault after all.
