    Six-Pack for Wednesday
-- Rangers got screwed bigtime in 9th inning Tuesday nite, when a liner by Teixeira hit chalk down right field line, but was called foul ball. Hit would have tied the game or given Texas 6-5 lead. As it was, they lost 5-3.
-- When ball was called foul, right in front of Texas bullpen, Teixeira went crazy, got tossed; players and coaches were arguing. Showalter had been tossed from game already. A very bad moment for umpire Hallion, who has plate in next game of series Wednesday.
-- 117-70 is the tally for American League teams in this yr's interleague play, which ends Sunday, I think. Sunday is also the halfway point of season, in terms of weeks.
-- Terry Francona is now 524-522 as major league manager; he got over .500 in career Monday, first time he was over .500 since winning season opener in 1997 with Phillies
-- How about the Edmonton Oilers? They have one of best players in NHL in Pronger, but have to trade him because Mrs Pronger, who is from St Louis, apparently hates living in Edmonton. How do you get value in a trade that way?
-- Our thoughts, heartfelt prayers go out to ESPN's Peter Gammons, who had emergency surgery Tuesday for a brain aneurysm. Possibly greatest baseball writer ever, we pray for a quick, speedy and full recovery.

List of 13: Siena takes the low road........
      13) Siena has decided not to give point guard Kojo Mensah a release to transfer, and also said that Mensah will not be welcomed back on the Siena basketball team, even if he were to stay at the Loudonville school. This is a situation that has turned ugly.

      12) What happens now? Mensah can appeal, but compromise that likely will occur is that Siena would give him conditional release, meaning the only way he could be on scholarship and be allowed to practice next year is if he went to a school not on Siena's restricted list (most likely Duquesne and any other MAAC school), or if he attended a junior college.

      11) Now, the kid can still go to Duquesne next year, but he wouldn't get an athletic scholarship, and he couldn't practice with the team. The latter point is big, since a year off from daily practice has to hurt the player, and player is transferring to better his chances of making the NBA. (You mean he's not transferring because Duquesne has a better Chemistry lab? Shocking.) Sitting out a full year ain't helping the player.

      10) Mensah's mentor in Brooklyn is a 70-year old guy named Norm Ostrin, who also mentors Mensah's best friend, Shawn James, who is transferring from Northeastern to Duquesne (following Coach Everhart, who made same move this spring). Siena is targeting Ostrin as "giving bad advice". More likely, Ostrin has the kid's best interest at heart, and fact of the matter is, the Atlantic 10 is a better league than the MAAC.

      9) A few years back, Carmen Macariello and Andy Cavo both transferred to Siena from New Hampshire; we didn't hear a peep out of Durham, NH. A case of two kids trying to play ball in a better league, basketball-wise, not unlike this case (except that Duquesne hasn't had any recent success on the court). Macariello, who was a team captain at UNH as junior, then bolted team, is now Director of Basketball Operations for Siena. Ironic, isn't it?

      8) An odd twist to the story came out in today's Albany Times Union, when actor Lou Gossett Jr was mentioned as a possibility to get involved in this matter. Gossett, a high school basketball teammate of Ostrin, inferred that this matter could get national publicity if Mensah isn't given his release, given the actor's connections to high profile media types.

      7) Before Fran McCaffery coached Siena, the Saints had a string of African-American coaches: Rob Lanier, Paul Hewitt, Louis Orr, Bob Beyer. This was not a coincidence, as Siena's student body, other than the basketball team, is basically lily-white. The school had a reputation as not the best play to go, socially, for an African-American player. This incident isn't going to help that reputation any.

      6) By the way, college scholarships are one-year renewable agreements between school and player; in other words, the school can basically fire a player (Levi Osby, anyone?) and also can block a player from transferring to a school it doesn't like. If you listen carefully, you can almost hear Dr Harry Edwards clearing his throat to speak on ESPN.

      5) Funny, Coach McCaffery bolted NC-Greensboro for Siena last year, in order to better his life for himself and his family. The American Way. Mensah is a young man trying to do the same thing for himself, but McCaffery and Siena won't let him. Very mature.

      4) Siena clearly feels that they've been a victim of chicanery in this matter, definitely by Mensah's "people" and maybe even by Duquesne, although Siena has been careful not to name the Dukes in any allegations. Because they are feeling wronged, they exact their revenge on the kid. Very adult of them.

      3) In the long run, Siena is shooting itself in the foot, if they choose to play hardball with Mensah, reaching far beyond simply losing a talented, versatile point guard. If the African-American community sends out the message that Siena is a bad place for African-American athletes to attend, recruiting is going to take a hit. A big hit.

      2) Bottom line is this: the kid will survive, will up playing two years at Duquesne, one way or the other; things have a way of happening in situations such as these. If he has to pay to go there for a year, the bills will be paid. This is a business where money usually isn't viewed as an obstacle to getting better players.

      1) College is about getting you ready for the real world, so in that sense, Siena is doing Mensah a big favor; they are showing him the worst that real life has to offer, how people can be small-minded, two-faced and petty when they don't get their own way. Even if the kid has to pay to go to school next year, this lesson he is getting free of charge.
