          Six-Pack for Monday
-- Major disaster for Astro bullpen Sunday night, as Iguchi hit 3-run homer in 8th, grand slam in 9th to send what had been a 9-1 Astros' win into extra innings. Pale Hose won on Saturday, after trailing Houston 5-1 in seventh inning. The Astros won game in 13th inning, avoiding total meltdown
-- White Sox became first team since '93 Tigers to hit grand slams in three consecutive games.
-- Jose Reyes is 32 for his last 57, and 7-7 in first inning last seven games. Would Mets think about putting carpet down in their new park? Reyes might hit .350 every year on it.
-- American League now owns 102-64 lead over NL teams in interleague play. Shouldn't AL get home field in the World Series? Doesn't that mean more than the All-Star Game?
-- Royals won Mark Redman's last five starts, after losing his first seven. Kansas City is playing a little bit better; in their last eleven games, Royals are 8-3.
-- North Carolina, Oregon State play one game for national title of college baseball Monday night, after Beavers won in Game 2 of best-of-3 series Sunday night, to even series 1-1.

            Monday's: Nobody asked me, but...........
            13) The day is coming soon, if it isn't here now: Derek Jeter as the third-best shortstop in New York City.

            12) When the White Sox brought Brandon McCarthy at the start of the 12th inning Sunday, it would've been nice if Joe Morgan had one ounce of knowledge about him; Jon Miller had to tell us that McCarthy could stretch out, if necessary, because he has been a starting pitcher. Morgan said nothing.

            11) If the baseball playoffs started Monday morning, playoff teams would be Boston-Detroit-Oakland-White Sox in AL, as White Sox hold six-game lead in Wild Card race.

NL playoff teams woul dbe Mets-Cardinals-Dodgers-Reds, as Cincinnati holds 1.5-game lead in NL Wild Card race.

            10) The record for most one-run losses in one season? In '68, the White Sox lost 44 games by a single run, the most ever-- they finished that season with 67-95 record, after contending in '67. Their attendance for whole season? 803,775, average of less than 10,000 fans per home game.

            9) Sunday night, White Sox had their 19th sellout of season, a franchise record. Quite an improvement over 1968.

            8) Jose Reyes had some major injur problems with his legs in minor leagues, until he switched from metal spikes to plastic ones. Right now, he is becoming a dominant force with his rare combination of speed and power in the gaps.

            7) Ron Darling, after half-season, is already my favorite color commentator on local telecasts; others who would be close are Jim Palmer (Orioles), Mike Krukow (Giants)- Tom Grieve (Texas) and Rex Hudler (Angels).

            6) Atlanta faced 6-9 Hendrickson Sunday, then fly to NY and face 6-10 Randy Johnson Monday, at least tying record for tallest pitchers ever faced on consecutive days.

            5) Last season, 41,333,279 fans attended minor league games.

            4) If this doesn't spell out how dominant the AL is over NL, not sure what does: Seattle Mariners are 11-1 against the NL, 27-38 against AL clubs.

            3) On-track attendance at Belmont Park Saturday: 4,620. How does the NYRA keep both Aqueduct and Belmont, with price of real estate what it is? Shouldn't they sell Aqueduct?

            2) Jason Giambi had a "stiff back" and missed first game in a doubleheader vs Florida, when tough lefty Willis pitched for Marlins. Oddly enough, his back loosened up for nightcap, with rookie righty Sanchez on the hill. Funny how that works.

            1) Arizona ate $22 million when they cut Russ Ortiz, the most any team has ever eaten in releasing a player. Orioles picked him up Sunday, as Ortiz had his best success in Atlanta with Leo Mazzone. I guess its not much of a risk for Baltimore, but if Arizona thought that little of him, what can he have left?
