12) With Florida State getting the #1 seed in the ACC tournament, coach Leonard Hamilton banks a $100,000 bonus; hope he at least buys the players a few pizzas.

11) In the Big 14, Wisconsin’s teams have had a weird mastery over Minnesota:

10) East Tennessee State 72, Wofford 58— ETSU coach Steve Forbes is 130-43 in five years as coach of the Bucs; he is a very good coach. This will be ETSU’s 2nd NCAA tournament under Forbes.

When he was growing up in Iowa, Forbes once gave up a home run to future major leaguer Tim Salmon in a Little League game.

9) Creighton is all excited about being the #1 seed in the Big East tournament this week, but if St John’s beats Georgetown Wednesday, the Bluejays’ reward for their top seed will be an actual road game against the 9th-seeded Red Storm in Madison Square Garden.

8) Green Bay G Amari Davis is a 6-3 freshman who is scoring 15.9 ppg, with a stat line that doesn’t look like he plays in 2020:

NCAA Basketball Tuesday’s Betting Preview and Odds for ACC First Round Matchups

This season’s ACC Tournament gets underway in Greensboro on Tuesday with opening round action featuring the bottom four seeds in the regular season standings.

The No. 13 Pittsburgh Panthers will square off against the No. 12 Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the early game followed by a matchup between the No. 14 North Carolina Tar Heels and the No. 11 Virginia Tech Hokies.

Betting Matchup
Pitt dropped down into the opening round at 6-14 in ACC play with a straight-up seven-game losing streak to close out the regular season. This extended slide complemented a 1-6 record against the spread. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in four of the seven games. The Panthers are 15-16 SU this season with a 13-18 record ATS.

Their scoring average stands at 58.7 points per game during the current losing streak to lower the season total to 64.9 points a game.

Danny Manning and his Wake Forest squad are listed as a 100/1 betting choice to win the ACC Tournament.

The Demon Deacons (13-17 SU, 16-14 ATS) are also 6-14 in conference play after posting a 2-4 record (SU and ATS) over their last six contests. The total went OVER in five of the six games. They did beat Pitt 69-65 on the road in early January as six-point underdogs. They closed out the regular season with back-to-back road losses to in-state rivals North Carolina and NC State by a combined 30 points as eight-point underdogs in each contest.

Wake Forest is averaging 73.5 PPG with three players scoring at least 12 points a game.

Betting Trends
-- The Panthers are 3-17 ATS in their last 20 games played in March and the total has gone OVER in six of their last seven Tuesday games.

-- The Demon Deacons have yet to win a game SU in their last 10 games played in the month of March. They have also lost five of their last seven games SU played on a Tuesday.

Betting Matchup
In a season to quickly forget, the Tar Heels earned the bottom seed on a few tiebreakers while winning just six of 20 ACC games. They are 13-18 overall both SU and ATS. The annual season finale against Duke went as planned with an 89-76 road loss as 10 ½-point underdogs. The also lost to Virginia Tech on the road in late January 79-77 while covering as 7 ½-point underdogs.

The lone bright spot for bettors was a 4-2 record ATS in their last six games with the total going OVER in the last four outings. One big issue all season long was a scoring average of 72.6 PPG battling a points-allowed average of 73.1.

The Hokies have the dubious distinction of having the best SU conference record (7-13) in the opening round. Overall, they are 16-15 SU with a 12-19 record ATS. Virginia Tech has just two SU wins over their last 12 outings with a even worse ATS record (2-12) dating back to Jan. 18. The total has stayed UNDER in their last four games.

The Hokies have failed to score more than 56 points in three of those final four contests while averaging 69.0 PPG on the year. They gave up an average of 66.1 points a game on defense.

-- The Tar Heels do have a SU record of 14-6 in their last 20 games in March and they have won nine of their last 10 games SU played on a Tuesday.

Wake Forest fell behind 22-6, rallied to win 69-65 at Pitt Jan 4; Deacons won last four series games, all by 6 or fewer points. Wake lost four of its last six games overall, went 6-14 in ACC- they gave up 87.4 ppg in last five games, but they did beat Duke in that stretch. Pitt lost its last seven games after starting out 6-7 in ACC; five of the seven losses were by 10+ points. Panthers shoot 29.6% on arc (#329), have #342 eFG% in country. Pitt went WL in this event three of last four years; Wake is 2-12 in last dozen ACC tourneys, with last win three years ago.

North Carolina led by 12 with 13:18 left, lost 79-77 in double OT at Virginia Tech Jan 22 in game Cole Anthony missed with an injury; Hokies made 14-37 on arc in that game. Tech won two of last three series games, after losing 12 of previous 13 meetings. UNC won three of last four games after starting out 3-13 in ACC; they’ve got #305 eFG%. Hokies lost 10 of their last 12 games; they’re shooting 35.5% on arc (#62), getting 42.8% of their points on 3’s (#5). Tar Heels are 11-4 in last five ACC tourneys; Tech went WL in this event four of last five years.

CAA final, Washington DC
Hofstra swept Northeastern TY, by 2-4 points; Huskies led last meeting 20-4 early, but lost 75-71 on Long Island. Hofstra won first meeting by a hoop, after blowing a 16-point lead. Pride is trying to win CAA tourney for first time. Huskies beat Hofstra 82-74 in final of LY’s tourney. Hofstra won 11 of its last 12 games overall; they played four starters 37:00+ in last nite’s stress-free win. Pride starts three seniors, two juniors. Northeastern won six of its last seven games; they made 13-25 on arc in Monday’s win over Elon- three starters played 36:00+.

MAAC tourney, Atlantic City
Manhattan lost seven of last eight games after starting out 7-5 in MAAC; Jaspers have #325 eFG%, shooting 30.7% on arc (#296), 45.9% inside arc (#313). 62.1% on line (#348). Fairfield lost four of last five games, went 8-12 in MAAC; Stags have an even worse eFG% (#348), shooting 28.8% on arc (#339). Fairfield swept Manhattan TY, beating them by 8-16 points, winning 66-50 in Draddy Gym four days ago; teams split last dozen games. Fairfield is 4-6 in this event last six years, losing in ’18 final; Jaspers are 2-4 in last four MAAC tourneys.

Iona won MAAC tourney last four years, but this was their first losing MAAC year since ’09; Gaels haven’t lost first tourney game since ’10. Iona swept Canisius TY, by 3-21 points; Gaels won four in row, 11 of last 15 series games. Iona lost its last three games overall, all by 3 or fewer points or in OT; they’re #6 experience team with an interim coach- Iona’s last win was 86-65 at Canisius Feb 27. Griffins won last two games to finish 7-13 in MAAC; they force turnovers 21.9% of time (#36). Canisius won first tourney game four of last six games, with two wins in OT.

Marist lost seven of last eight games; only win was 76-54 over Niagara Feb 23. Marist swept Niagara TY, by 19-22 points; Red Foxes won five of last seven series games. Marist has #324 eFG%, shooting 42% inside arc (#351); they’ve got #324 eFG%. Niagara split its last eight games, finished 9-11 in MAAC after changing coaches in preseason; Purple Eagles are worst rebounding team in country, which is bad in a league where no one can seem to shoot. Marist is 1-7 in last seven MAAC tourneys; Niagara is 1-5 in last five.

Horizon final, Indianapolis
Northern Kentucky/Ill-Chicago split pair of games this year; UIC bamboozled the Norse 73-43 Feb 16, making 11-20 on arc. Northern won six of last eight series games. UIC won nine of its last 13 games after starting season 6-12; Flames hammered #1-seed Wright State last nite, with only two guys playing more than 25:00. UIC shot 57% inside arc; they’ve got #29 eFG% defense in country, but turn ball over 22.4% of time (#339). NKU played four starters 35:00+ last night, wearing down Green Bay 80-69. Norse shoot lot of 3’s, but haven’t made that many (30.6%).

Summit final, Sioux Falls, SD
North Dakota/North Dakota State split couple games TY; Hawks’ 71-68 win over State Feb 22 is Bison’s only loss in their last 12 games. State won four in row, 11 of last 12 games; they played four starters 31:00+ in Monday’s 75-69 win over ORU. Bison start three seniors; they’re #33 experience team that takes lot of 3’s and is best team in country on defensive boards. UND is playing third night in row; State had Sunday off. Hawks made 11-24 on arc, had stress-free win over Ft Wayne Monday. Hawks’ bench plays 4th-fewest minutes in country.

WCC tournament, Las Vegas (Orleans Arena)
Gonzaga beat Saint Mary’s twice TY, by 30-10 points; they won nine of last 11 series games, but lost 60-47 to the Gaels in this event LY. Gonzaga is playing for #1 seed in NCAA’s; since 2004, they’re 33-4 in WCC tourney, but lost final to Saint Mary’s LY- they’re shooting 39% on arc (#4). Saint Mary’s beat BYU at buzzer Monday nite after winning in double OT Saturday; Gaels won last night despite making only 4-18 on arc- they’re #8 team in country on arc (38.3%). Gonzaga is 30-2 TY, playing fast (#32) pace- they shot 61% inside arc in last win over Saint Mary’s.

Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

13) Ivy League cancelled its two-day basketball tournament, because of growing coronavirus outbreak concerns. Yale won the regular season title, so they’ll go to the NCAA tournament.

MAC, Big West tournaments will be played without fans, because of health concerns.

12) In a related subject, MGM Resorts will temporarily close its Las Vegas buffets, starting Sunday, obviously because of growing coronavirus fears- it affects buffets at Aria, Bellagio, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, The Mirage, Luxor and Excalibur.

I’m heading out to America’s favorite city pretty soon; hope they keep the pizza place and In ’n Out Burger open. A guy’s got to eat.

11) WCC tournament:
Gonzaga 84, Saint Mary’s 68— Gaels are 26-8, but 0-3 vs Gonzaga; Jordan Ford scored 27 points in a losing cause, playing the whole game. What a week he had.

10) CAA tournament:
Hofstra 70, Northeastern 61— Pride win CAA tourney for first time; they won America East a couple times 20+ years ago, are experience team #7 with a bench that plays fewest minutes in the whole country.

9) Summit tournament:
North Dakota State 89, North Dakota 53— Horrible game; North Dakota ruined tournament when they upset South Dakota State- that would’ve been the ideal final. Game was 23-5 after 10:00 and it only got worse from there.

8) Horizon tournament:
Northern Kentucky 71, Ill-Chicago 62— 23 short days ago, NKU lost 73-43 at home to UIC; game was 44-18 at halftime. Norse shot 68% inside arc in this game, a fairly comfortable win.

7) NEC tournament:
Robert Morris 77, St Francis PA 67— Colonials won 16 of their last 21 games after starting season 4-9; this was teams’ third meeting in three weeks. St Francis starts three seniors and was a road favorite in this game; they were only 3-17 on arc, are shooting 36% for season on arc.

6) Upsets:
— Hartford (+7) 64, Stony Brook 58
— Howard (+6) 70, South Carolina State 63
— Niagara (+1.5) 56, Marist 54
— Robert Morris (+1.5) 77, St Francis PA 67

6) Nebraska’s basketball team was down to seven scholarship players for the Big 14 tournament this week, so they added a couple of football players to the roster. One is a backup QB, the other an offensive lineman who I assume will set a lot of screens.

Nebraska plays Indiana Wednesday, is a heavy underdog.

5) ESPN was trying to make a trade with NBC and get Al Michaels to broadcast its Monday night games with Peyton Manning, but NBC apparently turned down their request.

4) NFL’s Hall of Fame Game in Canton this summer will be Steelers-Cowboys.

3) North Carolina 78, Virginia Tech 56— Still weird that UNC is the #14 seed in ACC tourney; I mean,. Syracuse is the #6-seed, had a bye yesterday, is playing the last place team, but it is freakin’ North Carolina, which won four of its last five games. Not an easy path.

2) Baseball Hall of Famer Larry Walker will fulfill a lifelong dream this weekend; he will be an honorary emergency goaltender for NHL’s Colorado Avalanche in their game Sunday against the Vegas Golden Knights. Walker was a goalie growing up in Canada, and once tried out for the Western Hockey League’s Regina Pats, but luckily for him, he got cut and played baseball.

1) Celtics 114, Pacers 111— Boston blew a 19-point lead, but won and clinched a playoff spot, their sixth year in a row in the playoffs.
