13) From ESPN.com: Los Angeles Angels fired their longtime visiting clubhouse manager after an internal investigation confirmed suspicions that he was providing ball-doctoring substances to opposing pitchers. Brian Harkins had been with the Angels for 30 years, was providing illegal sticky substances in the visiting clubhouse that aided pitchers’ abilities to grip the baseball.

Trevor Bauer recently told Real Sports that 70% of pitchers use some sort of substance — be it pine tar or Firm Grip or a homemade concoction — to enhance their grip, which could ultimately provide greater movement and velocity.

Baseball has had a very rough offseason; they need real games to start. Soon.

12) Hal Mumme is a 67-year old football coach, the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Vipers in the XFL; 20 years ago, he was head coach at Kentucky. He is a tough guy.

Last weekend, Mumme was on the sidelines at the Houston-Dallas game when a RB ran out of bounds and knocked Mumme over- that happened in the second quarter. Mumme got up and coached the rest of the game. No big deal.

Turns out he broke his leg in the collision, so he stood there for more than half the game and called plays, with a freakin’ broken leg.

He’ll be coaching from the booth this week, when the Renegades play New York.

11) Terence Ross is in his 8th year in the NBA, his 4th with the Orlando Magic; he scored 35 points in 34:11 in the Magic’s 116-113 loss to Miami Wednesday.

What makes this unusual is the rest of Ross’ line score:
Zero rebounds, zero assists, zero steals, zero blocks, one turnover, two fouls.

It is really, really odd for a guy to score 35 points with no rebounds, no steals.

Ross is averaging 14.6 ppg in 27.2 mpg; he’s taken 738 shots, has 69 assists.

10) Utah State 75, New Mexico 70— Merrill scored 29 points to bail out the Aggies, who led by 13 early on, but then trailed 11 with 9:15 left. Utah State is barely on right side of the bubble, so this win was necessary. Winning tonight might be necessary, too.

9) Washington 90, Arizona State 83— Huskies get first Pac-12 road win this season, hand ASU a horrific home loss that could haunt them on Selection Sunday. Sun Devils lost their last three games, after a 7-game win streak.

8) San Diego State 73, Air Force 60— Aztecs are 29-1, but they’ve trailed at halftime in their last four games; they caught a break though, when UNLV got upset, so they won’t have to play the host team in Friday’s semifinal, they play Boise State instead.

6) Four of five teams in NL Central have season win totals of 82.5 or more wins, which is bad news for the Pittsburgh Pirates, the fifth team in the division, whose over/under is 69.5.

5) Pirates are projected to have the lowest Opening Day payroll in baseball, roughly $57M; the players union has filed grievances against the Pirates the last two years for not spending their revenue sharing money to increase their payroll. Go figure.

4) Late night TV is great this month, with replays of college hoop games and spring training games all night, every night. Baseball should show late night replays all season long.

3) Tim Duncan coached the San Antonio Spurs Tuesday, in their 104-103 win over Charlotte, subbing for an absent Gregg Popovich.

2) Chicago White Sox signed their young star, 2B Yoan Moncada, to a 5-year. $70M deal.

1) Coronavirus is a huge problem for the cruise ship industry; in mid-January, Royal Caribbean stock was $136/share; at the close of business Thursday, it was $65.78/share. Oy.

NCAA Basketball Friday's Tip Sheet, Betting Odds and Preview - ACC

As the regular season winds to a close in the ACC, two of Friday night’s early betting matchups feature a pair of games between unranked teams jockeying for a better position in that conference’s final standings.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will be on the road against the Clemson Tigers. At the same time in Raleigh, the North Carolina State Wolfpack play host to the in-state rival Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

Georgia Tech finds itself in the middle of the ACC standings at 10-9 straight-up in conference play. It improved to 5-1 both SU and against the spread in its last six games with Wednesday’s 73-57 home victory against Pittsburgh as a six-point favorite. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in four of those six games. The Yellow Jackets are 16-14 SU overall with a 19-10 record ATS.

Jose Alvarado led the way on Wednesday night with 23 points. Sophomore guard Michael Devoe added 13 more as the team’s leading scorer this season (15.9 points).

The Tigers lost for the second time in three games (SU and ATS) with Wednesday’s 70-58 defeat against Virginia Tech as slight 1 ½-point road underdogs. The other loss was to Georgia Tech 68-59 on Feb. 25 as 2 ½-point underdogs on the road. Clemson is 9-10 in ACC play with a SU record of 15-14 (16-13 ATS) overall. The total has stayed UNDER in six of its last nine contests.

Scoring just 66.6 points per game, this lineup still has four players averaging at least nine points a game. Junior forward Aamir Simms leads the way in points (13.0) and rebounds (7.1).

With Tuesday’s 93-83 loss to North Carolina as eight-point road underdogs, the Demon Deacons will be one of the bottom seeds in the ACC Tournament regardless of the outcome in this season finale. They are 6-13 SU in conference play despite recent stunners over Duke and Notre Dame as home underdogs in their previous two outings. Wake Forest (3-16 SU, 16-13 ATS) has gone 2-3 ATS in its last five games with the total going OVER in its last four contests.

Brandon Childress leads a trio of players in double figures with 15.4 points a game. The senior guard scored 24 points in Tuesday’s losing effort.

Monday’s 88-69 loss to Duke as 12-point road underdogs was the Wolfpack’s seventh SU loss in their last 11 games. They have gone 3-8 ATS over that same span with the total going OVER in six of the last eight games. NC State is 9-10 SU in ACC play and 18-12 (13-16-1 ATS) overall. In early December, it beat Wake Forest 91-82 to cover as a 5 ½-point road favorite.

The Wolfpack are averaging 74.4 PPG behind guard CJ Bryce (13.4 points) but allowing 70.3 points on defense.

Peacocks are winning despite turning ball over 23.9% of time (#349), shooting 43.9% inside arc (#345). Iona is 9-10 in MAAC, but won three of their last five road games; last time they finished below .500 in MAAC was 2009.

BAYLOR BEARS AT WEST VIRGINIA MOUNTAINEERS

Baylor caps a crazy regular season at West Virginia on Saturday. The Bears back into this finale not playing their best basketball, narrowly avoiding another upset loss in overtime versus Texas Tech on Monday following a defeat to TCU last weekend.

Baylor could be playing with a short bench versus WVU, with forward Tristan Clark and guard Mark Vital both missing Monday’s game due to knee injuries and listed as questionable for Saturday. The Bears went just two deep into their bench and now take on a Mountaineers team that thrives on tempo and chaos.

West Virginia draws an average of 21.3 fouls per game – fourth most in the country – and forces opponents to cough the ball up almost 16 times per contest. The Mountaineers are trying to not only improve their conference standing before the Big 12 tournament but puff up their NCAA resume. We’re taking a good long look at WVU at home against the spread.

LOUISVILLE CARDINALS AT VIRGINIA CAVALIERS

The Cavaliers could be the hottest team in the country, reeling off seven straight victories to punch their ticket back to the Big Dance. Virginia, which is projected to earn around a No. 9 or No. 10 seed in the NCAA tournament can improve on that with a victory over the Cardinals Saturday.

It’s not surprising that defense has fueled this late-season push from the defending national champs, limiting their last three opponents to 53 points per game on just over 35 percent shooting from the field. In order to put Louisville on the ropes, Virginia is going to need a strong start and stop UL from picking up steam in the opening 20 minutes.

In their last meeting, the Cardinals scored 44 points in the opening half en route to an 80-point performance – the single-highest amount of points the Cavs have allowed all season back on February 8. Virginia has checked its last three opponents to just 23, 25, and 11 points in the first half and give up an average of only 22.4 first-half points per game at home on the season. We’re going Under the first-half total between Louisville and Virginia on Saturday.

OHIO STATE BUCKEYES AT MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS

The Big Ten schedule comes to a close with a doozy in East Lansing on Sunday. The red-hot Spartans host the Buckeyes, setting their sights on a fifth straight victory after an impressive win at Penn State on Tuesday.

Ohio State will be on short rest for his matchup, defeating Illinois 71-63 as 5.5-point home chalk Thursday before traveling to MSU for Sunday’s final game. The Buckeyes are 4-6 ATS on the road in 2019-20 and enter this last game on a tear for Over backers, topping the number in four of their last five contests.

Michigan State has found a new gear offensively during this four-game stretch, averaging more than 80 points on almost 51 percent shooting from the field. What’s more, three of those four contests came on the road. The Green and White score nearly 10 points more per home game and will have the momentum and motivation for another big performance with the Big Ten title in the balance. We see solid value in the Over between Ohio State and Michigan State Sunday.

MID-MAJOR WATCH: YALE BULLDOGS (22-6 SU, 17-9 ATS, 16-10 O/U)

It’s a busy weekend in the Ivy League, where the schedule throws a series of back-to-back contests at the conference. Yale holds a one-game lead over Harvard in the standings heading into Friday’s matchup at Dartmouth (+7), then the Bulldogs will board a bus and go from Hanover to Harvard for a 7 p.m. ET tipoff Saturday.

The Crimson are also pulling double duty but get to sleep in their own beds before this vital finale on Saturday. Harvard hosts Brown as a 10.5-point favorite Friday before welcoming the Bulldogs to Cambridge. Both Yale and Harvard could get caught looking ahead to their showdown on Friday, especially the Crimson who are just 3-6 ATS at home this season.
March Madness futures odds: Books rooting against Florida State, for Duke or Baylor

BETTING TRENDS AND NOTES

• While it may not hold the same gravity as past Tobacco Road Rivalry games, North Carolina and Duke can’t be ignored – especially with the way the Tar Heels are playing right now. Roy Williams’ program has struggled through one of its worst seasons in recent memory but has won three straight games on the back of a possessed offense averaging more than 90 points on better than 51 percent shooting.

North Carolina has covered the spread in five straight matchups with Duke, including a thrilling two-point overtime loss at home to the Blue Devils in which UNC covered as a 5.5-point underdog. Coach K’s kids back into this final game with three losses in their last five outings and UNC is hoping to have big man Armando Bacot back in action after missing the win over Wake Forest. If North Carolina can collect a win in Cameron Indoor Saturday, the entire ACC is on alert during the conference tournament.

• As the college hoops regular season comes to a close, we say goodbye to some dear betting friends. One of those teams is Portland State, which has been a pinata of points for Over bettors all season. The Vikings are 19-9-1 Over/Under on the season but played to a rare Under against Northern Arizona Thursday night, with the 80-66 final score staying below the 157.5-point total.

Portland State is back home again on Saturday hosting Sacramento State, which has been one of the better Under plays in the country at 9-16-1 O/U. However, the Hornets have seen those Over/Under results swing in recent games, with the team going Over in five of its last six games (the outliner being a push). We “go big or go home” in this Big Sky finale, leaning toward the Over.

• The Georgetown Hoyas limp into the final game of the regular season on a four-game losing streak, looking for a ray of sunshine when they face Villanova at home Saturday. Good news may be hard to come by in the nation’s capital, with Georgetown’s two top scorers possibly out of action for the weekend and beyond.

Center Omer Yurtseven and guard Mac McClung missed Wednesday’s loss to Creighton due to injuries, taking a collective 31.5 points and 13 rebounds per game out of the Hoyas’ lineup. Georgetown put up a solid effort offensively, considering, but surrendered 91 points in the 15-point loss to the Bluejays. The Hoyas lost 80-66 in their first meeting with Villanova, with McClung and Yurtseven contributing just 18 total points on a combined 8-of-24 shooting.
