    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

NBA knowledge for a Tuesday night in March:

    — San Antonio is 11-7 ATS in last 18 road games.

    — Celtics are 5-1-2 ATS in last eight home games.

    — Oklahoma City covered six of last nine games with the Clippers.

    — Pelicans are 3-6 ATS in their last nine home games.

    — Five of Denver’s last six home games went over total.

    — Lakers covered six of their last eight games.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

    13) Former UConn basketball coach Jim Calhoun is 77 years old now but he is still coaching, at St Joseph’s, a D-III school in Hartford, CT.

St Joseph’s had been an all-female school until recently. St Joe’s is 42-14 in Calhoun’s two seasons there, making the D-III national tournament this year. Pretty cool that a guy his age is still doing what he loves, and obviously doing it very well.

    12) Last week, 76ers’ guard Shake Milton made 13 straight 3-point shots over a three-game stretch, tying an NBA record for most consecutive 3-pointers made, a mark that had previously been set by Brent Price and Terry Mills.

Milton was the 54th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft; he played only 13.4 mpg in 20 games LY, but he obviously worked on his skills over the summer and now it is paying off- he’s made 46.6% of his 3’s this season, and is scoring 8.8 ppg in 17.8 mpg.

    11) So Mike Trout went to a driving range over the weekend, and he hit some golf balls very far, maybe one or two into the fence at the back of the range. Videos of him hitting balls went viral; they were all over my Twitter feed. Baseball needs to market him better.

    10) Media outlets have to take it easy with their “last 4 in” and “last 4 out” proclamations for the NCAA tournament, as if they’re gospel, which they aren’t. Many of them are close to what winds up happening, but it is misleading to say that there is a concrete ranking system.

    9) Hall of Famer Chipper Jones signed on with ESPN as a game analyst, so that should be fun, learning from him. He’ll do couple weeknight games every week.

    8) Baseball’s spring training has quirks; for instance, Tampa Bay played Bronx the other day in Tampa, but Bronx was the home team, since they have spring training there, while the Rays have spring training further south, in Port Charlotte.

One thing I’ve never done is go to spring training. Maybe someday, but I’d rather go to Arizona than Florida, since the A’s train there.

    7) Wichita State 66, SMU 62— This game was Sunday; Shockers were down 50-26 with 13:36 left, which means they outscored SMU 40-12 from that point on. Big win for a Wichita team that is squarely on the NCAA bubble.

    6) New York Mets had Monday off from spring training, as in totally off. Players weren’t allowed to be there, doors were locked. Kind of a mental health day.

    5) Georgia Tech, Detroit Mercy won’t be playing in their conference tournaments, because of rules infractions. Detroit is no good anyway; Georgia Tech could’ve won a game in the ACC tournament.

    4) I’m not a big fan of watching the NFL Combine on TV: I know it is important, and I do enjoy watching the actual draft, but to me the Combine isn’t a spectator thing, it is just teams gaining knowledge and doing their work.

The most interesting part of the Combine are the player interviews, and they’re out of the public eye anyway- I take a pass on watching the workouts.

    3) XFL knowledge:
    — Home favorites are 4-3 ATS, road favorites 4-5
    — Under is 11-5 in XFL games. Home team won 11 of 16 games SU.

    2) XFL teams seem to be settling in on the 2-point conversion from the 5-yard line as the way to go on PAT conversions. Teams have three choices, from 2, 5 or 10-yard lines.

Last two weeks, 23 of 33 conversions were 2-point tries.

    For season, teams are 10-30 on 1-point tries, 12-37 on 2’s, 4-10 on 3’s.

    1) College basketball conference tournaments start tonight, as a three-week stretch of great fun begins. Horizon, A-Sun, Big South and Patriot Leagues all have tourney games tonight.

Tuesday's NBA Betting Tip Sheet - March 3
                Kevin Rogers

                Spurs (-3, 212) at Hornets – 7:05 PM EST
                SA: 25-33 SU, 24-33-1 ATS, 35-22-1 O/U
                CHA: 21-39 SU, 30-30 ATS, 28-32 O/U

                Last 10 games:
                SA: 3-7 SU, 3-7 ATS, 6-3-1 O/U
                CHA: 5-5 SU, 6-4 ATS, 3-7 O/U

                Head-to-Head:

The Hornets swept the season series from the Spurs last season, but San Antonio picked up revenge in the first matchup back on February 1 with a 114-90 blowout as 8 ½-point home favorites.

                Betcha Didn’t Know:

-- The Spurs have lost seven of their past nine road games, while allowing at least 120 points five times in this span.

-- Charlotte has dropped 10 of its previous 12 home contests, as both the wins have come against New York. Since the start of December, the only teams the Hornets have beaten at home are the Knicks, Wizards, Kings, and Warriors.

                Nets at Celtics (-9, 221 ½) – 7:35 PM EST
                BKN: 26-33 SU, 28-31 ATS, 29-29-1 O/U
                BOS: 41-18 SU, 37-20-2 ATS, 27-32 O/U

                Last 10 games:
                BKN: 4-6 SU, 6-4 ATS, 5-5 O/U
                BOS: 7-3 SU, 7-3 ATS, 6-4 O/U

                Head-to-Head:

The home team has dominated this series recently by winning each of the past eight games since April 2018. The two division rivals split a pair of meetings in late November, as the Celtics knocked off the Nets, 121-110.

Two days later at Barclays Center, Brooklyn rebounded for a 112-107 victory as 4 ½-point underdogs, while both contests sailed ‘over’ the total.

                Betcha Didn’t Know:

-- The Nets have covered in four of the last five opportunities as an underdog, but Brooklyn has gone 2-7 in its past nine games away from Barclays Center.

-- Since losing at home to Phoenix on January 18, the Celtics own a 14-4 ATS record in the last 18 games, including a 7-1 ATS mark at TD Garden.

                Clippers (-3 ½, 227) at Thunder – 8:05 PM EST
                LAC: 41-19 SU, 32-28 ATS, 28-31-1 O/U
                OKC: 37-23 SU, 38-22 ATS, 28-31-1 O/U

                Last 10 games:
                LAC: 6-4 SU, 5-5 ATS, 5-5 O/U
                OKC: 7-3 SU, 4-6 ATS, 4-5-1 O/U

                Head-to-Head:

The home team has captured each of the two meetings this season, as the Clippers last won at Oklahoma City in November of 2016. Los Angeles edged OKC, 90-88 in mid-November at Staples Center as 7 ½-point favorites, while the Thunder outlasted the Clippers, 118-112 as one-point home favorites on December 22.

                Betcha Didn’t Know:

-- The Clippers are 4-1 SU/ATS in their last five games in the role of a road favorite, while three of those wins have come by double-digits.

-- The Thunder have covered in seven of 11 games as a home underdog, but OKC has won only four times in this situation.

                Timberwolves at Pelicans (-11 ½, 247) – 8:05 PM EST
                MIN: 17-42 SU, 20-37-2 ATS, 34-25 O/U
                NO: 26-34 SU, 30-28-2 ATS, 34-26 O/U

                Last 10 games:
                MIN: 2-8 SU, 3-7 ATS, 8-2 O/U
                NO: 6-4 SU, 5-5 ATS, 6-4 O/U

                Head-to-Head:

This series was owned by the home team from January 2018 until February 2019 (6-0) until the Pelicans won at Minnesota, 107-99 on December 18 as 3 ½-point underdogs.

                Betcha Didn’t Know:

-- The Wolves are 3-15 ATS in their last 18 games, but all three covers by Minnesota in this stretch have come as an double-digit underdog.

-- Since Zion Williamson entered the Pelicans lineup on January 22, the Pelicans have cashed in only three of nine home contests.

                Warriors at Nuggets (-15 ½, 218) – 9:05 PM EST
                GS: 13-48 SU, 28-33 ATS, 27-34 O/U
                DEN: 41-19 SU, 28-28-4 ATS, 29-30-1 O/U

                Last 10 games:
                GS: 1-9 SU, 3-7 ATS, 3-7 O/U
                DEN: 7-3 SU, 6-4 ATS, 7-2-1 O/U

                Head-to-Head:

The Nuggets outlasted the Warriors, 134-131 in overtime at Chase Center in San Francisco on January 16. Denver failed to cash as 3 ½-point road favorites, marking the fourth consecutive cover by Golden State in the series.

                Betcha Didn’t Know:

-- In spite of going through a horrific season, the Warriors have been money on the road of late by posting a 7-3 ATS record in its last 10 games away from the Bay Area.

-- The Nuggets are 5-0-1 to the ‘over’ the last six home contests, while topping the 127-point mark four times in this span.

                Raptors (-5, 225 ½) at Suns – 9:05 PM EST
                TOR: 42-18 S, 33-27 ATS, 31-28-1 O/U
                PHX: 24-37 S, 27-33-1 ATS, 30-31 O/U

                Last 10 games:
                TOR: 6-4 SU, 4-6 ATS, 5-5 O/U
                PHX: 4-6 SU, 3-7 ATS, 3-7 O/U

                Head-to-Head:

These teams met right after the All-Star break in Toronto as the Raptors defeated the Suns, 118-101 as 8 ½-point home favorites. Phoenix had covered the previous nine matchups between the squads, but Toronto has won five straight in the series.

                Betcha Didn’t Know:

-- The Raptors are looking to avoid their second four-game losing streak of the season. The last time Toronto dropped three consecutive games back in December, the Raptors defeated the Bulls, 93-92, but failed to cover as six-point road favorites.

-- The Suns have not fared well for bettors at home since January as Phoenix is 1-12 ATS the last 13 games at Talking Stick Resort Arena. Nine of those defeats did come in the role of a home favorite, while the only cover came as an underdog against Houston on February 7.

                76ers at Lakers (-12 ½, 220 ½) – 10:05 PM EST
                PHI: 37-24 S, 26-31-4 ATS, 30-30-1 O/U
                LAL: 46-13 S, 32-26-1 ATS, 29-30 O/U

                Last 10 games:
                PHI: 6-4 SU, 6-4 ATS, 6-4 O/U
                LAL: 8-2 SU, 6-4 ATS, 4-6 O/U

                Head-to-Head:

The 76ers dominated the Lakers at Wells Fargo Center on January 25 as 4 ½-point underdogs, 108-91. Philadelphia has captured five of the past six meetings with Los Angeles, while winning in its last three matchups at Staples Center.

                Betcha Didn’t Know:

-- The 76ers are one of the worst road teams in the league at 9-22, but Philadelphia isn’t even a good bet in the away underdog role. In its last 10 opportunities as a road ‘dog, the Sixers are 1-8-1 ATS.

-- The Lakers are 5-2 SU/ATS in their last seven home games as a double-digit favorite, but the two non-covers came in straight-up losses to the Blazers on January 31 and the Magic on January 15.

                Wizards at Kings (-5 ½, 233) – 10:05 PM EST
                WSH: 22-37 SU, 30-27-2 ATS, 35-23-1 O/U
                SAC: 26-34 SU, 31-28-1 ATS, 30-30 O/U

                Last 10 games:
                WSH: 5-5 SU, 6-3-1 ATS, 6-4 O/U
                SAC: 7-3 SU, 7-3 ATS, 4-6 O/U

                Head-to-Head:

The Kings traveled to D.C. in late November and took care of the Wizards, 113-106 as 2 ½-point underdogs. That marked the fifth consecutive ‘under’ in the series, while snapping a three-game winning streak by the home teams.

                Betcha Didn’t Know:

-- The Wizards are 0-7 this season off a road win, while failing to cover in their last five opportunities in this situation.

-- Sacramento has slumped to a 2-8 ATS record in its last 10 games in the role of a home favorite, which includes the non-cover in Sunday’s six-point victory over Detroit.
