NBA trends to ponder…….

— Atlanta Hawks: 3-8 ATS in last 11 road games.

— Boston Celtics 5-2-1 ATS last eight home games.

— Brooklyn Nets won/covered its last five home games.

— Chicago Bulls are 3-9-1 ATS in last 13 road games.

— Cleveland Cavaliers are 3-10 ATS in last 13 home games.

— Seven of last nine Dallas Maverick games went over the total.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) Random idea to raise money for charity in the summer:
— A 64 player 1-on-1 tournament.
— Two players from each NBA team, with four Wild Card additions.
— When they show the brackets, it would be highly-anticipated TV.
— Each player picks a charity of his choice and earns $$$ for that charity.
— Games are to 20, have to win by 3 points (shots outside arc are 2 points).

Would be difficult to get all the star players on board, but it would be great fun.

12) XFL observations:
— Home teams won six of the first eight games.
— Home favorites are 3-2 ATS, home underdogs 1-2
— Six of eight games stayed under the total.

11) Much like the AAF last year, quarterback play in this spring league is sub-par; thinking back to the USFL in the 80’s, they had Jim Kelly, Doug Flutie, Doug Williams, Steve Young, Bobby Hebert, Brian Sipe, John Reaves— NFL quarterbacks, which is part of what made it so good.

The XFL has been fun to watch so far, but it ain’t the NFL, which is fine.

10) Most interesting part of the XFL so far is the extra point; you cannot kick a PAT, you have three options:
— A one-point conversion from 2-yard line (6-22)
— A two-point conversion from 5-yard line (3-14)
— A three-point conversions from 10-years line (1-2)

So a 9-point game is still a one-possession game; there is no set-in-stone strategy on what is the smart thing to do. Coaches are learning on the fly, which is interesting to observe.

9) XFL teams are running an average of 61.4 plays per game; New York ran only 45-47 plays in their first two games, St Louis ran 71-83 plays in its two games.

8) Defenses are usually ahead of offenses early in any season; we’ll see if the scoring goes up as the season moves along.

7) Xavier 77, St John’s 74— Fast-paced, fun game to watch; Musketeers get their 11th straight win over St John’s. Xavier improves to 17-9, 6-7 in Big East play.

6) In his Hall of Fame career, Tony Gwynn his .302 in at-bats after he had two strikes on him. From 1974-2019, the next best average in that situation? Wade Boggs, at .262.

Some college basketball notes…….
5) Pac-12: Four teams are tied for first in loss column, with four losses. USC/UCLA are both 8-5, a game out of first place. Arizona-Colorado-Oregon look like locks for the tournament; rest of the league is beating each other up.

4) Big 14: If you had a Maryland/Penn State exacta to win the league, you’re looking good right now. Rutgers is trying for its first NCAA Tournament bid since 1991; they could use a road win or two to strengthen their case.

3) Selection Sunday figures to be more dramatic than usual; the bubble is overcrowded, Lots of mediocre/pretty good teams. 15-20 teams can legitimately win the national title, but most of those teams could also lose their first round games. It is that wide open.

2) I’ve said this before, but no conference should get more than eight teams into the NCAA Tournament; if you finish 9th in a league, you don’t deserve to play for the national title, no matter how good your league is.

1) Notre Dame 77, North Carolina 76— Tar Heels are having the season from hell; they had a 15-point lead with 8:39 left in this game, but lost on a 3-pointer with 0:01.6 left. UNC is 3-12 in ACC games, they’re in last place- six of their last seven losses were by 6 or fewer points.

A pair of Top 5 college basketball teams in the Atlantic 10 and the Big 12 face a test on the road this Tuesday night as the featured betting showdowns on the board.

The early game pits the No. 5 Dayton Flyers on the road against the VCU Rams. The No. 1 team in the nation will also be in action with the Baylor Bears heading to Norman to face the Oklahoma Sooners.

Betting Matchup

Dayton has a game and half lead over Rhode Island atop the Atlantic 10 standings at a perfect 12-0 straight-up. It is 23-2 overall and the current winning streak stretches to 14 games going back to late December. The Flyers are 13-11-1 against the spread after failing to cover in four of their last five games. The total has stayed UNDER in three of their last four games. Sophomore guard Obi Toppin posted 19 points in Saturday’s 71-63 road win against UMass. He continues to lead Dayton in scoring with 19.7 points per game. The team is averaging 81.2 points on the year.

The Rams are a bubble team at best for this year’s NCAA Tournament at 17-8 SU overall. They did nothing to help their cause with back-to-back losses (SU and ATS) to George Mason at home and to Richmond on the road in their last two games. They are just 1-3 (SU and ATS) over their last four games with the total going OVER or ending as a PUSH in seven of their last nine contests. VCU lost its first game against Dayton this season 79-65 on Jan. 14 as a 8 ½-point road underdog. It is averaging 72.0 PPG and giving up 64.3 points a game on defense.

-- The Flyers are 9-1 SU in their last 10 road games but that record fall to an even 5-5 ATS. The total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in seven of their last 10 games on the road.

-- The Rams have won eight of their last 10 home games SU and they have covered ATS in three of their last four games at home. The total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in their last four home games.

-- Dayton’s earlier win snapped a four-game losing streak to VCU both SU and ATS. The total has gone OVER in the last eight games between the two.

Betting Matchup

The Bears will be going for the series sweep after beating Oklahoma 61-57 on Jan. 20 as 10 ½-point home favorites. Saturday’s 70-59 home victory over West Virginia as five-point favorites ran their SU unbeaten streak to 22 games. A SU win on Tuesday would set a Big 12 record. Baylor is 23-1 SU overall with a 16-8 record ATS after going 5-2 ATS in its last seven games. The total has stayed UNDER in four of its last six outings. Jared Butler put up 21 points against West Virginia. The sophomore guard leads Baylor in scoring with 15.3 PPG.

Oklahoma is an even 6-6 SU in conference play following Saturday’s 87-70 road loss to Kansas as an 11 ½-point underdog. This snapped a four-game winning streak ATS while going 3-2 SU in the same five-game span. The total has gone OVER in three of those last five games. The Sooners are 16-9 SU with a 11-13-1 record ATS. They have a trio of players scoring at least 14 points a game as part of a 71.6-point team scoring average. Oklahoma’s defense is allowing 68.0 PPG at the other end of the court.

BAYLOR BEARS VS OKLAHOMA SOONERS (+3.5, 134.5)

The No. 1 team in the country could find themselves in a tough spot in Norman on Tuesday night, as Baylor might be tempted to look ahead to a huge weekend tilt against Kansas.

Baylor has stayed at the top of the AP poll thanks to a stifling defense that holds opponents to 58.4 points per game on 38.2 percent shooting. But Oklahoma is no slouch on the defensive end of the floor either, limiting foes to 63.8 ppg on 38.4 percent shooting at home.

These teams last met up on January 20, with Baylor winning 61-57 and both squads shooting an identical 35 percent from the field. Expect another defensive battle and bet the Under.

PURDUE BOILERMAKERS VS WISCONSIN BADGERS (-4, 122)

Fading Big Ten teams on the road has proved profitable all season, so at the risk of sounding like a broken record consider backing the home side on Wednesday night. Both Purdue and Wisconsin have some of the most extreme home/road splits this season.

The Boilermakers are averaging just 27 first half ppg on the road while the Badgers hold opponents to 28 first half ppg at home. Wisconsin also shoots much better in Madison, putting up 37.7 first half ppg at home, compared to 28.5 ppg in away contests. Grab Wisconsin on the first half spread laying 2 points.

SYRACUSE ORANGE VS LOUISVILLE CARDINALS

Louisville is coming off a rough week, dropping back-to-back games by a total of 21 points against two teams hovering around the .500 mark (Clemson and Georgia Tech). But the Cardinals could be poised for a bounce back performance against Syracuse on Wednesday night. Syracuse has also struggled lately, losing four of its last five games, and that lone win came by just two points at home against Wake Forest.

When you think of teams coached by Jim Boeheim and Chris Mack, you probably think defense. But both the Cardinals and Orange have been more successful on the offensive end of the court this season. Louisville is 11th in KenPom's adjusted offensive efficiency rankings while Syracuse is 23rd.

On defense, Syracuse ranks just 135th according to KenPom while Louisville has surrendered 107.2 points per 100 possessions over its last four games. Take the Over.

VILLANOVA WILDCATS VS DEPAUL BLUE DEMONS

When these teams last met up on January 14, Villanova was lucky to come away with a 79-75 victory at home. But recent trends suggest that their rematch on Wednesday might not be as close.

DePaul is coming off an ugly 29-point defeat to Creighton, has lost seven straight games and is 2-5 ATS over that stretch. Villanova is coming off a 20-point road victory over Temple and despite a three-game losing streak at the beginning of the month is still ranked No. 12 in the latest AP poll.

The Wildcats are a veteran bunch led by Collin Gillespie and they actually shoot better on the road (45.7 percent) than at home (42 percent). With 'Nova 4-0-1 ATS in their last five games in hostile territory, look for the Wildcats to cover the spread again on Wednesday.

MID-MAJOR TO WATCH: UTAH STATE AGGIES (21-7 SU, 12-14 ATS, 10-15-1 O/U)

The Aggies are currently on a four-game winning streak and need to finish the season strong if they want to return to the NCAA tournament. Utah State went through a rough patch at the beginning of January, losing three games in a row. But this is still the same team that defeated LSU and Florida on neutral ground earlier this season.

Utah State ranks among the Top-50 teams in the country in both offensive and defensive efficiency and, thanks to center Neemias Queta (12.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game) and forward Justin Bean (12.3 ppg, 10.2 rpg), is 16th in the nation in rebounding rate.

On Wednesday, the Aggies host the Wyoming Cowboys who are just 1-11 over their previous 12 games. Wyoming is 344th in the country in offensive efficiency and 351st in rebounding rate. Utah State is 13-1 SU at home this season and that lone loss come against undefeated San Diego State.

NATIONAL TITLE ODDS

After a 67-60 road victory over Michigan State, Maryland now has the best odds of any Big Ten team to win the national championship. The Terrapins are +1,400 to win the title and are 8-0 SU and 6-2 ATS over their last eight contests. On Tuesday, Maryland hosts Northwestern who has lost nine games in a row and is 3-7 ATS over its previous ten contests.

The Spartans entered the season among the title favorites at +800, but after losing four of their last five games they now sit at +2,000. Depite their 17-9 record the Spartans have the same odds as undefeated San Diego State. On Thursday, Michigan State takes to the road to face Nebraska. The Spartans are just 1-7 ATS on the road this season.

BETTING TRENDS

• Gonzaga doesn't just have one of the best teams in the country, the Zags have also been the best Over bet going 22-5 O/U since the season began. They have cashed the Over in nine consecutive games and host the San Francisco Dons on Thursday. The two teams combined for 162 points when they last played each other on February 1.

• Over the last week, home favorites have gone 124-110-6 ATS (53 percent) while away favorites are 46-48 ATS (48.9 percent).
