  • Clippers at Mavericks Preview
    Kevin Rogers

    Betting Odds Breakdown

Dallas opened as a 1-point home favorite with a total of 229.

    Eye Test

The Clippers remain behind the Lakers for the top spot not only in the Pacific division but also in the Western Conference. Los Angeles owns a 30-13 record, but a majority of that damage has been done at Staples Center (19-4). The Clips are 11-9 on the highway, but their 10 losses against the West are the most among the top five teams in the conference.

Dallas has taken over first place in the Southwest division after winning four straight games, coupled with Houston's four-game losing streak. The Mavericks have compiled the worst home record among the top seven teams in the West at 13-10, but Dallas has put together a solid 16-8 mark against teams within the conference.

    Current Form

The Mavericks dropped a pair of home games to the Nuggets and Lakers before catching fire with a four-game hot streak. Dallas topped the 120-point mark in each of the last three wins, including in a 120-112 triumph over Portland on Friday as 7 ½-point favorites. Luka Doncic dropped 35 points for Dallas, including knocking down eight three-pointers.

Since getting shocked by the Grizzlies at home on January 4, the Clippers are riding a 5-1 run the last six games. L.A. started a six-game road trip by edging New Orleans, 133-30 on Saturday, but failed to cash as 5 ½-point favorites. The Clippers overcame an eight-point fourth quarter deficit led by Kawhi Leonard's 39 points, as L.A. continues to play without Paul George, who is sidelined by a hamstring injury.

    Head-to-Head

In the first matchup at American Airlines Center on November 26, the Clippers crushed the Mavericks as 1 ½-point favorites, 114-99. Los Angeles jumped out to a commanding 62-46 halftime lead and never looked back as Leonard and George combined for 54 points. Doncic finished with 22 points, but struggled from three-point range by going 0-for-8, while hitting 14 free throws. The home team had won nine consecutive games before the Clippers' victory in November, while the 'under' has hit in four of the past five meetings in Dallas.

    Inside the Stats (Home/Away)

    Points Per Game:

    Los Angeles 116.2 (114.4)
    Dallas 116.7 (115.1)

    Points Allowed:
    Los Angeles 109.6 (112.0)
    Dallas 109.4 (108.4)

    Home-Away Records
    -- Los Angeles 11-9 SU, 9-11 ATS
    -- Dallas 13-10 SU, 9-13-1 ATS

    Situational (Western Conference Matchup)

The Clippers have slumped to a 2-5 ATS record in the role of a road underdog, which includes losses to Utah, Oklahoma City, Denver, and Houston.

The Mavericks are 4-4 SU and 3-5 ATS in the last eight home games against Western Conference foes, while winning all three contests with three days of rest this season.

    Betcha Didn’t Know

The Clippers have scored at least 130 points in seven games this season, coming off the win at New Orleans. L.A. has cashed the 'under' in five of six contests in the following contest, as the Clippers have actually limited opponents to 100 points or less five times in this situation.

    Total Talk (Over-Under)

Los Angeles: 21-21-1 (Away, 10-10 Under)
    Dallas: 22-18-2 (Home, 14-9 Under)

The Clippers have hit the 'under' in three of the past four road games, but are 5-2-1 to the 'over' in eight January contests.

The Mavericks are coming off a pair of 'overs' in their last two games, while cashing the 'over' in five of the past seven at home.

      ************************************************** ***************************

      Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……

      13) LSU 84, Florida 82— Almost an epic collapse by the Bayou Bengals, who led 79-69 with 1:15 left in the game. Florida ran an out-of-bounds under play with 0:00.5 left and got an easy layup that would’ve tied the score, but it was ruled to come a split-second too late.

      12) 2017 draft:
      — Chicago Bears traded up to the #2 spot, giving up two 3rd-round picks an a 4th-round pick to move up one place to take QB Mitch Trubisky with the #2 pick. Meanwhile, Patrick Mahomes was picked #10, Deshaun Watson was picked #12.

      Oy.

      11) Most people seem eager to bet the over in the Super Bowl. So if you like the under, wouldn’t it be a good idea to wait a while, hoping the total goes up and you get a better number?

      10) LF Marcell Ozuna signs a one-year, $18M deal with the Braves, who also signed Felix Hernandez to a minor league deal. Ozuna went 9-for-21 against Atlanta in the playoffs LY, while he was playing for the Cardinals.

      9) Sounds like the Jaguars are going to hire Jay Gruden as their next offensive coordinator; lot of former Redskin coaches all over the NFL.

      8) There is a woman named Red Panda who performs at halftime of basketball games; she balances plates on her head while riding a unicycle. Her act is very popular nationwide.

How do you start doing that? How long do you have to practice before you’re good at it? Have other people tried and given up because they broke too many dishes?

      7) Basketball upsets:
      — Texas A&M (+9) 66, Missouri 64
      — Illinois (+5.5) 79, Purdue 62
      — Northern Illinois (+4) 76, Kent State 69
      — TCU (+2.5) 65, Texas Tech 54

      6) Evansville fired basketball coach Walter McCarty after a sexual misconduct investigation; this comes two months after the Purple Aces won at Kentucky.

Evansville announced Todd Lickliter as its new head coach; he signed a multi-year deal and will coach the Purple Aces against Drake tonight. Good move to hire a new coach quickly, or else the current players might jump ship to other programs.

      5) ESPN’s obsession with Zion Williamson is baffling; he seems like a good kid, but he played at Duke last year, they didn’t make the Final Four. He gets treated like he is this generation’s version of Kareem, Jordan or Lebron. Not really sure why.

      4) Random fact: former NFL QB Elvis Grbac is the football coach at Villa Angela-St. Joseph HS in the Cleveland area. It is interesting to see what retired players in their post-playing lives.

      3) Quote of the Day part 2, from Texas alum TJ Ford:
“It’s very disappointing and disheartening to watch the direction Texas Longhorn has now taken. I’ve never witnessed a blowout of this magnitude in BIG12 play like tonight.”

He was talking about the Longhorns getting drubbed at West Virginia Saturday.

      2) Was considering going to Las Vegas for the NFL Draft, but decided against it; draft is better on TV, where you can see everything. Draft will be far flung all over the Strip and downtown; will be ton of extra people in town. Hotels are jacking prices up; and since I’m not a great people person to begin with, I’ll take a pass.

Having the red carpet on a stage on the lake in front of Bellagio should be quite a sight.

      1) My only comment on the baseball Hall of Fame voting is that I am amazed more than half the voters (52.6%) picked Omar Vizquel as a Hall of Famer. Very good player, not a great player. To get in the Hall of Fame, think you had to be a great player.

                  Quote of the Day:
“That’s something that I’m still trying to figure out right now as we speak. I mean, I don’t understand that because you’re there. You have an opportunity to go to play in a Super Bowl. And for that to happen, it’s extremely … it’s bothersome. We have to look at ourselves, everybody. I’m going to look inside of myself and see why weren’t our players playing with their hair on fire. I think everybody in our organization has to do that.”

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

                  13) Dallas Cowboys hiring a new coach could help fast track Dak Prescott’s contract situation, because Prescott can’t participate in an off-season workout program unless he is under contract, which he isn’t right now.

When you have a new coach, the off-season program is more important than usual. Helps to have the quarterback there, ya think?

                  12) Suspensions after the Kansas/K-State fracas Tuesday:
Kansas: Silvio De Sousa 12 games, David McCormack 2 games
Kansas State: James Love 8 games, Antonio Gordon 3 games

                  11) New York Mets are expected to name Luis Rojas their next manager; Rojas was originally set to be the Mets quality control coach, same job he had last year. 38-year old Rojas is Felipe Alou’s son, so he has excellent bloodlines to be a major league skipper.

                  10) Disappointed that Showtime hasn’t committed to another season of the terrific show Ray Donovan; its very well done, good entertainment. If they’re smart, they’ll sign up for Season 8.

                  9) Phillies added four veterans to bolster their roster:
                  — P’s Francisco Liriano, Bud Norris, Drew Storen
                  — IF Neil Walker

                  8) Philadelphia police are investigating Philadelphia Flyers’ mascot Gritty for allegedly punching a 13-year-old kid at an event for season ticket holders. Seriously, they are.

                  7) Baseball stuff:
                  — Kansas City Royals re-signed LF Alex Gordon to a one-year, $4M deal. Gordon apparently waived his no-trade clause, which could become interesting in July.

                  6) Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald bought a small piece of the Phoenix Suns, joining Aaron Rodgers as NFL players who own part of an NBA franchise.

                  5) Hawai’i hired former Arizona State coach Todd Graham as its new football coach.

                  4) Eli Manning retired from the NFL Wednesday, with a career record of 117-117, 8-4 in playoff games, with two Super Bowl titles.

                  3) When LSU won the national title in college football, coach Ed Orgeron banked $1.775M in bonuses……..Oregon coach Mario Cristobal earned $1.175M in bonuses, and his Ducks didn’t even make it to the national playoff.

                  2) There have been 10 kickoff returns for TDs in the Super Bowl, no punt return TD’s.

                  1) Is it me, or does 397 people voting on the Hall of Fame seem excessive? If its not excessive, then I’d like a vote too— guaranteed I watch more baseball than most of the voters.

                          SNAPPING A LOSING STREAK

The Cavaliers hope to snap their five-game losing streak as they host the Wizards as 2.5-point home favorites. The Wizards rank last in the league in scoring defense and surrender 122.7 points per game on the road. Over their last three games Washington has given up 134 or more points twice.

Look for Cleveland to capitalize off a porous Wizards defense and improve on their 6-15 home record. Take the Cavaliers on the spread laying 2.5-points.

                          BUILDING OFF A CAREER NIGHT

The Wizards allow 23.6 points and a league-high 17.6 rebounds per game to opposing centers. Cleveland's Tristan Thompson is coming off a game where he logged 22 rebounds through 35 minutes and has grabbed 13 or more boards in five of his last nine games.

Look for Thompson to continue to be active on the glass. Bet Over his rebounding total of 11.5.

                          GETTING BACK KEY PIECES

The Lakers are 5-point favorites on the road as they take on the Nets. Los Angeles has Kyle Kuzma, and Rajon Rondo listed as probable, and Anthony Davis questionable for Thursday's contest. For the Nets, DeAndre Jordan is questionable with a finger injury, and Kyrie Irving has been upgraded to probable.

Both the Lakers and Nets can put up points early, with L.A. averaging 28.7 first quarter ppg away from home, and the Nets averaging 27.9 ppg at Barclays Center. Both teams will be getting back key offensive weapons today and should have no problems scoring early. Bet Over the first quarter total of 58.

                          DOING IT THE HARDAWAY

The Blazers are 4-point underdogs as they host the Mavericks. Portland will likely have Trevor Ariza and Hassan Whiteside suit up for today's contest, but still have CJ McCollum listed as questionable.

Dallas' Tim Hardaway Jr. has been efficient from beyond the arc this season connecting on 39.2 percent of his shots from long range. He has hit three or more 3-pointers in six of the Mavs last eight games.

When these teams met earlier this season, Hardaway shot 11-of-23 from the floor for 20 points. Look for similar numbers today and bet Over his points total of 15.5.

                          LIGHTING IT UP

The Blazers have given up an average of 114.2 ppg at home. During their last three games overall they have surrendered 121 ppg.

The Mavs come in averaging a league-high 118.6 ppg in away contests and have won 10 of their last 13 games on the road. Look for Dallas to prove too strong offensively and lay the points with the Mavs.

                              • Preview: Clippers (31-14) at Heat (31-13)

                                Date: January 24, 2020 8:00 PM EDT

The Miami Heat, owners of the NBA's best home record this season, will play host to the road-weary Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night.

Miami, which is 20-1 at American Airlines Arena this season, has won its last two home games in overtime. In fact, the Heat also lead the league with an 8-0 record in OT.

The only stain on Miami's home mark this season came Dec. 13, when the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Heat 113-110.

In Wednesday's 134-129 win over the Washington Wizards, the Heat received excellent bench production -- 74 points, 19 rebounds and 16 assists. The reserves were led by Tyler Herro (25 points) and Goran Dragic (22 points, 10 assists).

Miami's reserves on Wednesday also included Kelly Olynyk (14 points) and James Johnson (seven points).

Johnson started this season inactive as the Heat organization said he reported to camp out of prime condition. To his credit, Johnson has worked hard to get back in the good graces of Heat coach Erik Spoelstra.

"I don't blame anybody else," Johnson said. "I have the utmost respect for Coach 'Spo.' If you are in that position (being out of shape), then you probably did it to yourself."

Johnson has played in seven straight games. Before that, he had played in just seven of 37 contests.

"I never let myself get in a bad place mentally," Johnson said. "I remain focused and worked. I had to look in the mirror, and I did."

Miami's current starting lineup features Jimmy Butler, who leads the team in points (20.3), assists (6.5) and steals (1.8); Rookie of the Year candidate Kendrick Nunn; 3-point shooter Duncan Robinson and post players Bam Adebayo and Meyers Leonard.

The Clippers are 19-4 at home but just 12-10 on the road. This will be the fourth in a six-game trip for the Clippers, who had their winning streak snapped at four on Wednesday in a 102-95 loss to the Atlanta Hawks.

On one day's rest -- which will be the case on Friday -- the Clippers are 18-7 this season.

This will be the first time this season the Clippers and Heat have met. They split two games last season, when each team won on the road.

The good news for the Clippers is 6-foot-7 forward Kawhi Leonard is expected to return after resting Wednesday. Kawhi Leonard, who signed with the Clippers as a free agent this past summer, leads the team in scoring (27.1), rebounds (7.4) and steals (2.0). He is also second in assists (5.0) and is a two-time NBA Finals MVP.

Clippers 6-8 forward Paul George, a six-time All-Star averaging 23.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.5 steals, has missed seven straight games due to a strained left hamstring. But while George has been out, Kawhi Leonard has found an even higher level, averaging 36.0 points.

"Everybody's just giving the effort of their mind and body," Leonard said. "We want to compete and make winning plays."

George and defensive-minded point guard Patrick Beverley (groin) are questionable for Friday's game, and their absences could hurt the team's chances against Miami.

But the Clippers have a couple of aces off the bench in 6-1 guard Lou Williams (19.9 points) and 6-8 power forward Montrezl Harrell (19.4 points).

Williams, 33, is the NBA's career leader in points off the bench and has been named the league's Sixth Man of the Year three times. Harrell, 25, is on pace for a career year. Both players are former second-round picks.
