      • Celtics drop Raptors behind Brown
        December 25, 2019

TORONTO (AP) Bostonâ??s Jaylen Brown celebrated Christmas with something he had never enjoyed before: a road win at Toronto.

Brown scored 30 points, Kemba Walker had 22 and the Celtics beat the Raptors 118-102 Wednesday in the first Christmas Day NBA game played in Canada.

â??It was good to get a win here on Christmas,â?? said Brown, who made five 3-pointers and shot 10 for 13 from the field. â??Iâ??ve never won here period, so it was great to just get one.â??

Enes Kanter had 12 points and 11 rebounds as the Celtics snapped an eight-game losing streak north of the border and became the first Atlantic Division opponent to win in Toronto in more than four years.

The Celtics have won four straight to improve to 8-2 in December.

Bostonâ??s Gordon Hayward returned to the starting lineup after missing the past three games because of a sore left foot. He scored 14 points in 26 minutes.

        â??Itâ??s still a little sore but itâ??s playable,â?? Hayward said. â??Itâ??s good, itâ??s good.â??

Fred VanVleet scored 27 points in the Raptors' second straight loss, and Chris Boucher had a career-high 24.

â??We werenâ??t quite physical enough, I thought, for most stretches of the game,â?? Toronto coach Nick Nurse said.

The Raptors are 2-2 since losing center Marc Gasol (left hamstring), guard Norman Powell (left shoulder) and forward Pascal Siakam (groin) to injuries. Nurse had no update on the status of the trio, but acknowledged their absence is making life difficult.

â??Scoring is not very easy for us right now,â?? Nurse said. â??Itâ??s tough.â??

Toronto had gone an NBA-record 34 games between home losses to division foes. The Raptorsâ?? last home loss to an Atlantic team was a 111-109 defeat to the New York Knicks on Nov. 10, 2015.

Kyle Lowry scored 14 points and Serge Ibaka had 12 for Toronto. The Raptors shot 8 for 23 from 3-point range.

Kanter arrived dressed in a black t-shirt that read â??Freedom for ALLâ?? in white letters. He played outside the United States for the first time since visiting Toronto with the Knicks on Nov. 10, 2018.

â??Definitely amazing,â?? a smiling Kanter said. â??I just canâ??t describe it with words. Just going out there was more than just a basketball game. For me, it was just going out there and living this freedom.â??

Kanterâ??s outspoken criticism of Turkish President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄ?an's government led to his passport being revoked in 2017. Turkish prosecutors have accused Kanter of membership in a terror organization and issued an international warrant for his arrest.

Kanter did not travel with the Knicks to London last January because he feared he could be killed over his opposition to ErdoÄ?an. After being traded to Portland in February, he did not join the Trail Blazers for their March 1 game at Toronto.

The Raptors jumped out to a 10-0 lead as the Celtics missed their first five shots of the game, leading to a Boston timeout with 10:03 left in the opening quarter. After the stoppage, the Celtics outscored Toronto 28-9 to lead 28-19 after one.

â??They hit us early but I thought we recovered well,â?? Celtics coach Brad Stevens said.

Brown made all five of his field goal attempts in the third, including three from long range, and scored 16 points. Boston led 88-69 through three quarters.

        TIP-INS

Celtics: G Marcus Smart (eye infection) traveled to Toronto but was not active. Smart has missed the past seven games. â?¦ F Grant Williams dislocated his right index finger in the second quarter but returned before halftime. â?¦ F Jayson Tatum shot 1 for 10 in the first half. He finished 5 for 18 and scored 11 points. â?¦ Boston scored 11 points off seven Toronto turnovers in the first.

Raptors: Toronto made a season-worst seven 3-pointers in a Dec. 9 win at Chicago. â?¦ Torontoâ??s only previous Christmas Day game was a 102-94 loss at New York in 2001.

        HOME SWEET HOME

The road team won a Boston-Toronto game for the first time in 13 meetings.

        TAKE A CHANCE

Boston outscored Toronto 24-4 in second-chance points.

        HOT SHOTS

The Celtics shot 46 for 92 (50%). Boston is 8-0 this season when shooting 50% or better.

        UP NEXT

        Celtics: Host Cleveland on Friday.

        Raptors: Visit Boston on Saturday.

Embiid stars, 76ers rip Bucks 121-109
        December 25, 2019

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Joel Embiid was unyielding under the basket, arms extended sky high as Giannis Antetokounmpo tried to plow through the All-Star center for a bucket. Embiid absorbed the contact and slapped the ball out of Antetokounmpo's hands, one of a bountiful of disruptive plays triggered by the big man.

Embiid used a national showcase to play like an MVP, and the Sixers pushed around a Bucks team that had the best record in the NBA.

''A lot of people have kind of forgotten who I am,'' Embiid said. ''When I'm needed, I'm going to show up.''

Embiid had 31 points and 11 rebounds in Philadelphia's first home Christmas game in 31 years, and the 3-point happy 76ers beat Milwaukee 121-109 on Wednesday.

Tobias Harris sank five 3s, Josh Richardson and Furkan Korkmaz each had four and even Embiid hit three as part of Philly's franchise record-tying 21 3s (on 44 attempts) in its most complete game of the season.

''I think this team is designed for the playoffs,'' coach Brett Brown said. ''I believe the road we have traveled so far has been a little bit erratic, at times. But I think the landing spot is exciting.''

Harris and Al Horford hit 3s over the final 90 seconds to push back a late Bucks run, and the Sixers improved to 16-2 at home.

There was a charged atmosphere for the anticipated matchup featuring Embiid and Ben Simmons taking on Khris Middleton and Antetokounmpo. Fans dressed as elves, wore ugly sweaters and held signs that said all they wanted for Christmas was a Sixers win.

They got it, with Embiid bullying the reigning MVP in Antetokounmpo on the way to the Sixers' biggest halftime lead (21 points) against the Bucks under coach Mike Budenholzer.

''It was just one of those nights,'' Budenholzer said.

Embiid scored 23 points and was troublesome defensively, holding Antetokounmpo to 4-for-14 shooting in the half. The Sixers hit 11 3s in the half and made the NBA-best Bucks (27-5) look like anything but Eastern Conference contenders.

Brown said before the game the Bucks were ''NBA royalty.'' They have a ways to go before they're crowned tops in the East.

With fans chanting ''Trust the Process!'' on Embiid free throws, the star center was worthy of the holiday highlight video.

''I reminded our team, people in America have more appreciation for this day in the NBA,'' Brown said. ''We're grateful for the opportunity.''

The Sixers aced their test against the NBA's best.

''I'm not going to overvalue one game,'' 76ers general manager Elton Brand said, ''but it's a good barometer.''

It wasn't just Embiid that flustered the Bucks. Korkmaz was knocked on his rear and buried Philly's 16th 3 of the game late in the third for a 93-67 lead that had the crowd going wild. Korkmaz's shot capped a string of 3s on five straight Sixers baskets. Mike Scott, the reserve better known for his man-of-the-people popup appearances, became the seventh Sixer to hit a 3 for a 98-70 lead. The 76ers led 100-73 through three.

Middleton scored 31 points and Antetokounmpo had 18 points and 14 rebounds. Antetokounmpo got flustered over a perceived missed call on an eye poke and was whistled for a technical in the fourth.

Antetokounmpo, who was 8 for 27 from the floor, 0 for 7 3s, said he briefly suffered blurred vision.

''We had to go through this today. We had to go down 30,'' Antetokounmpo said. ''We had to have our character tested today because the only way you get better is when you face adversity. Our team is going to be better.''

Brand held a state-of-the-franchise press conference before the game and preached chemistry and continuity would eventually get the Sixers among the best in the East, a conference many pundits picked them to win.

''We are going to get there,'' Brand said. ''Home-court advantage is important but having Joel healthy in the playoff in May, June, that is important to us. We could still grow into a team that could be a No. 1 seed.''

For a game, the 76ers sure played like one.

        TIP-INS

Bucks: The Bucks trailed by 29 and held only an early three-point lead.

76ers: Embiid had his seventh game this season with 30 points and 10 rebounds. He scored 20 points before halftime for the second time this season. ... Simmons had 15 points and 14 assists. .. The Sixers scored 120-plus points in three straight games for the first time since they did it in four straight from March 28-April 3, 1990

        BANNER TIME

Bucks guard Donte DiVincenzo admired the 2016 and 2018 Villanova national championship banners that hang in the rafters. The former Wildcats star was named Final Four Most Outstanding Player in the '18 title run.

''There's two of them things. That's tough,'' he said.

        TRADE MARKET

''I always look at opportunities to improve the team. That is my job to make sure Brett and the group have the pieces to compete for a championship. Right now, I am definitely encouraged,'' Brand said.

        UP NEXT

        Bucks: Play Friday at Atlanta.

76ers: Open a four-game trip Friday at Orlando.

Warriors surprise Rockets as home 'dogs
        December 25, 2019

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Damion Lee made a statement on a rare big stage this season for injury-ravaged Golden State.

Lee had 22 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, Draymond Green scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half and the Warriors beat the Houston Rockets 116-104 on Wednesday.

''I'm thankful that we got the win, but there's still things that I feel I have to get better at day in and day out to fully solidify myself as an NBA player and not a two-way,'' Lee said.

D'Angelo Russell added 20 points, and Glenn Robinson III had 18 to help the Warriors win their third straight and end the Rockets' four-game winning streak. Golden State improved to 8-24.

''We're probably not going to play a bigger game than this all year,'' Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. ''A national TV game against the Rockets. This game meant a lot to us.''

Russell Westbrook had 30 points and 12 rebounds for Houston. James Harden had 24 points and 11 assists, and Danuel House Jr. had 18 points.

''We had a lot of great opportunities that we just didn't convert,'' Harden said. ''It's pretty simple.''

Westbrook had his ninth consecutive game of at least 20 points, the longest by any Rockets player other than Harden since Tracy McGrady did it in 10 straight games in 2007.

''For whatever reason we just didn't get it done,'' Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni said. ''It's too bad we didn't play with the spirit and energy we usually have.''

Green also had 11 rebounds. He gave the Warriors the lead for good with just under five minutes left in the third quarter on a driving layup.

''It's been a really trying season for us,'' Green said. ''To come out Christmas Day and get a win against a very good basketball team feels good.''

Ky Bowman hit a driving layup at the buzzer to give the Warriors an 92-87 edge heading into the final quarter.

''This felt like an opportunity for us and the guys seized it,'' Kerr said. ''I think the fans see how hard our guys are playing. Everybody is feeling great on Christmas Day to get that win.''

After falling behind by eight points midway through the first quarter, the Rockets outscored Golden State 48-17 over the next 13 minutes to open a 53-40 advantage. Russell hit a short jumper in the final minute of the second and the Warriors drew to 68-64 by halftime.

''We were up by 13 in the first half and for some reason we decided to start fouling them and putting them on the line and that cost us,'' D'Antoni said. ''Defensively we gave up 64 points in the first half and that's not good enough.''

        CHRISTMAS TIME IN THE CITY

Kerr said playing on Christmas ''is definitely a special feeling. It's a great day already with a lot of good vibes in the air. It's nice to be home this year.'' D'Antoni said: ''It's a special day for basketball; privileged to be able to play on these days.'' Harden said: ''I was pretty excited to play on Christmas. It's always a blessing and a honor.''

        • Kawhi Leonard, Clippers rally to beat Lakers 111-106
          December 25, 2019

LOS ANGELES (AP) The Los Angeles Clippers were resilient and dominant in the second half to put away the Los Angeles Lakers, using the NBAâ??s marquee Christmas game to show why the city and the Western Conference might belong to them this season.

Kawhi Leonard scored 11 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter and had 12 rebounds and five assists to help the Clippers beat Lakers 111-106 on Wednesday night.

The Clippers trailed by 12 points at halftime, by 15 in the third quarter, and by seven in the fourth quarter with 6:39 remaining, but they rallied to improve to 2-0 against the Lakers this season.

â??And we didnâ??t flinch,â?? Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. â??Like, we just kind of hung in there. Almost felt like we were biding our time and just trying to make a run. Thatâ??s something you have to have when things arenâ??t going great for you. You just got to hang in there, and I thought we did that tonight.â??

Leonard set a franchise record for points on Christmas, and he became the 10th player in NBA history with at least 35 points, 10 rebounds and five assists on Dec. 25.

Montrezl Harrell had 18 points off the bench, and Paul George added 17, and the Clippers are 15-2 at Staples Center.

â??We have so many interchanging parts,â?? Clippers guard Lou Williams said. â??We have guys thatâ??s going to have big nights. I think I had five or six points tonight, and thatâ??s just how this team is built. Itâ??s going to be different guys every night."

Kyle Kuzma led Los Angeles with 25 points. LeBron James had 23 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds, and Anthony Davis had 24 points. The Lakers have lost four straight games.

Williams made two free throws - after a questionable foul call against Davis for tapping the swingman after his transition layup rimmed out - to give the Clippers a 105-103 lead with 3:29 to go.

Leonard, who had a 3 to cap a 7-0 run and tie it at 101 with 5:14 remaining, then made four late free throws.

â??They wanted it more,â?? Davis said. â??We had a lot of mistakes down at the end of the game, mental mistakes at both ends of the floor. We fouled a lot in the fourth quarter, put them to the line. â?¦ We gave that one away.â??

Los Angeles had a chance to tie in the final seconds, but video review showed James touched the ball last after Patrick Beverly knocked it away as James went up for a 3. George hit two free throws for the final margin.

â??That wasnâ??t the game right there,â?? James said. â??I mean, itâ??s a big play and you want to try to get it right, but it wasnâ??t where the game was lost.â??

          TIP-INS

Clippers: Williams had six points and seven rebounds. ... The Clippers had a 50-42 edge in rebounds.

Lakers: Kuzma had 15 points in the first quarter, making 5 of 7 shots, including 3 of 4 3s. â?¦ The Lakers bench outscored the Clippers' reserves 49-36. â?¦ James played in 14th Christmas Day game, second in NBA history to Kobe Bryant at 16.

          BIG RESPONSE

After allowing a 14-2 run over the final 2:52 of the second quarter, the Clippers regrouped with nine different players scoring to tie it up at 86-all going into the fourth quarter. Defensively, they held the Lakers to 9 of 23 shooting in the third, including 1 of 10 from 3.

â??Weâ??ve done worse,â?? Williams said of the struggles closing out the first half. â??Weâ??ve dropped 15-point leads in three straight games before this, so I think thatâ??s just growing pains.â??

          SANTAâ??S LAP

There was plenty of star power sitting courtside for the highly-anticipated game, including Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea and R&B star The Weeknd. But Kevin Hart found himself closer to the action than expected when Davis missed a fallaway shot at the end of the first half and ended up on top of the comedian. James ran over from the bench and did the same, much to the amusement of Hartâ??s kids.

              **************************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

              13) Rickey Henderson was born on Christmas, which raises the question; whats the worst day of the year to have a birthday?

My votes: December 26, April 1, February 29. Could you imagine having a birthday once every four years?

              12) Best days of the year to have a birthday?

My picks are January 1st, July 4th. Maybe December 31, too.

              11) MLB Network ran an old hour-long special Tuesday night on the Oakland A’s of the 70’s; brought me back to my childhood days as a baseball fan. Good stuff.

              10) Guessing I’m very late with this, but stumbled across an HBO series called Curb Your Enthusiasm yesterday; funny stuff. Some of Larry David’s act is cringe-worthy, but I spent lot of time laughing, which is pretty much what matters.

The late Bob Einstein was on this show; he was also the star of Super Dave, a comedy show in the 90’s, and was in Oceans 13. Funny man.

              9) Celtics 118, Raptors 102— Toronto had won 34 consecutive divisional home games.

              8) Edwin Encarnacion signed with the Chicago White Sox for one-year, $12M.

              7) NFL named Joe Namath as one of the 22 finalists for the QB slots on their 100 greatest players list. Joe Namath is a terrific guy, was very famous, but he won two (two!!!) playoff games in his career. Overrated, for sure.

              6) My top 3 quarterbacks of Super Bowl era: Elway, Staubach, Brady

              5) Ben Roethlisberger said that he’ll be back with the Steelers next year, good news for fans in Pittsburgh. Big Ben hasn’t played since Week 2 this season.

              4) Podcast recommendation: “How I Built This”, an interview series with successful people who built big businesses. Interesting to hear how successful people think.

              3) Ravens’ QB Lamar Jackson gave each of his offensive linemen a Rolex watch for Christmas.

              2) Clippers 111, Lakers 106— Smart scheduling by the NBA, having the two LA teams play each other, so neither has to travel on Christmas.

High quality game; Leonard had 35 points, 12 rebounds in a game the Lakers led by 15 points in the third quarter. Harrell had 18 points in 31:00 off the bench for the Clippers.

              1) Houston 75, Washington 71— Cougars win the Diamond Head Classic. We’ll see both teams in March, also on a neutral floor. Houston was +8 in turnovers; their bench outscored Huskies’ bench 18-5, after Washington led by 14 early on.

                • Doncic nets 24 in return from injury, Mavs beat Spurs 102-98
                  December 26, 2019
                  By The Associated Press

DALLAS (AP) Luka Doncic returned to the Dallas lineup after missing four games due to injury and scored 24 points, helping the Mavericks beat the San Antonio Spurs 102-98 on Thursday night.
Doncic finished with 10 rebounds and eight assists and barely missed adding to his NBA-leading total of eight triple doubles. He last played on Dec. 14 against Miami, when he sprained his right ankle.

San Antonio rallied from a 102-85 deficit by scoring the game's final 13 points. After Doncic missed two free throws, the Spurs' Derrick White missed a 3-point attempt with six seconds left and Doncic got the rebound.

The Mavericks (20-10) pulled within half a game of idle first-place Houston in the Southwest Division.

Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 17 points, Kristaps Porzingis and Dorian Finney-Smith each had 13, and Delon Wright added 12 off the bench. Dwight Powell's 11 points all came in the first half.

DeMar DeRozan led San Antonio with 21 points, 16 in the second half. Rudy Gay scored 18, LaMarcus Aldridge had 17 and White finished with 10.

                  KNICKS 94, NETS 82

NEW YORK (AP) - Julius Randle had 33 points and eight rebounds, and the Knicks forced the Nets into the worst shooting performance in the NBA this season.

Brooklyn finished 21 of 78 (26.9%) from the field. Chicago had the previous worst shooting game this season when it hit 29.9% against Toronto exactly two months earlier.

Marcus Morris added 22 points and eight rebounds for the Knicks, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Elfrid Payton scored 13 points as New York won for the first time in three meetings with Brooklyn this season.

Spencer Dinwiddie scored 25 points but was only 5 for 15 for the Nets.

                  PISTONS 132, WIZARDS 102

DETROIT (AP) - Blake Griffin had 14 points and a season-high 11 rebounds and Detroit routed Washington in a matchup of short-handed teams.

The Pistons were missing Reggie Jackson (back) and Luke Kennard (knee), while Griffin, Bruce Brown and Derrick Rose played through injuries.

John Wall, Davis Bertans, Isaiah Thomas, Thomas Bryant and Rui Hachimura sat out for Washington.

Detroit got 14 points and 10 rebounds from Andre Drummond. Christian Wood finished with 22 points and Todd Frazier scored 18.

Anzejs Pasecniks scored a career-high 17 in his fifth NBA game to lead the Wizards. Bradley Beal had 15 points.

                  GRIZZLIES 110, THUNDER 97

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Jonas Valanciunas scored 21 points, Jaren Jackson Jr. added 20 and Memphis held on to the lead this time against Oklahoma City in the second meeting between the teams in eight days.

Tyus Jones added 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting for Memphis, which blew a 24-point third-quarter lead during its last visit to Oklahoma City on Dec. 18 and lost 126-122.

That started a stretch in which the Grizzles dropped three out of four games.

Chris Paul had 23 points and 11 assists, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 21 and Dennis Schroder added 20 points for Oklahoma City, which had a four-game winning streak snapped.

Brandon Clarke scored 13 points for Memphis, going 5 of 6 from the floor.

Steven Adams scored 16 points for the Thunder.

                  JAZZ 121, TRAIL BLAZERS 115

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Donovan Mitchell scored 28 of his 35 points in the second half to power Utah over Portland.

Rudy Gobert, who had 16 points and 15 rebounds, forced Carmelo Anthony into an air ball with 22.4 seconds remaining and blocked Damon Lillard's driving shot with 5.2 seconds left to quell the Trail Blazers' furious fourth-quarter rally.

Lillard scored 34 points, including a pair of 30-foot contested 3-pointers in the final minutes, and CJ McCollum tallied 17 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter for the Blazers (14-18), who have dropped two straight after winning four in a row.

                  TIMBERWOLVES 105, KINGS 104, 2OT

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Andrew Wiggins scored the first basket of the second overtime and then fed Robert Covington for another score, and Minnesota ended its 11-game losing streak by beating Sacramento.

Wiggins finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Gorgui Dieng had 21 points and 15 rebounds, and Covington scored 19 for the Timberwolves.

Minnesota hadn't won since Nov. 27 before limiting Sacramento to 11 points in the fourth quarter and then outlasting the Kings in two overtimes. The Wolves did it without Karl-Anthony Towns, who missed his fifth straight game with a left knee sprain.

Richaun Holmes had 20 points and a career-high 18 rebounds for the Kings.

Friday’s Den: In a perfect world, where I made all the decisions……..

                      13) I’d like everyone to be nicer to each other; life is short, lets enjoy it.

Lets tolerate our differences; I like the A’s, you like someone else. you like beer, I like Cherry Coke, our differences are what make life interesting.

                      12) A friend of mine wouldn’t talk to me for a year because I didn’t vote for Hillary Clinton in 2016 (I voted for the 3rd party candidate). Why take life that seriously? Especially the way Presidential elections are, the Democrat almost always wins New York anyway.

                      11) Would a date with Gina Gershon be too much to ask for? (probably, yes…..)

                      10) Sounds like one of the things I’ve been posting in this space for years will finally happen; both leagues should have the DH in 2022. Both leagues should have the same rules.

                      9) Lets do away with Daylight Savings Time; who needs sunlight at 5:30am? Keep the clocks the way they are in the summer. Let it stay light as late in the day as possible.

                      8) Can we get rid of the Electoral College? Whoever gets the most votes should win, yes?

                      7) Every kid would learn basic life skills in high school: cooking, laundry, how to write a check, how to do a budget, the divorce laws.

When it comes to cooking, I can make one thing……reservations.

                      6) No Thursday NFL games, except for Week 1 and Thanksgiving Day. Instead, why not have Monday night doubleheaders every week? 7:00/10:30 games; that would be fun.

                      5) NBA playoff series would be two out of three until the Finals, which would be best-of-5.

                      4) College football teams shouldn’t be playing I-AA opponents; I mean, Alabama played Western Carolina this year, and Florida played UT-Martin AND Towson State- how does this happen? Why would anyone pay to see mismatches like this?

                      3) I’d be in favor of college basketball adopting the NBA’s 8-second rule for getting the ball over half court; most anything that encourages pressing and a faster-paced game is a good thing.

                      2) I’d make cigarettes illegal; they’re known to cause cancer. What is good about them?

                      1) I’d make sure DirecTV picked up the Pac-12 Network. Its not too much to ask. This is my list after all.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas.

                          • Magic survive late free throw woes to beat 76ers
                            December 27, 2019
                            By The Associated Press

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Evan Fournier scored 20 points and Orlando survived a collapse from the free throw line in the final minute in the Magicâ??s 98-97 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night.

Aaron Gordon had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Nikola Vucevic had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Orlando. Joel Embiid and Tobias Harris each had 24 points and 11 rebounds for the 76ers, who had their three-game winning streak snapped. Embiid missed a desperation 30-footer at the buzzer.

Orlando led 93-83 after Gordon's dunk with 1:49 left in the game, but it was far from over. The Magic were 5 of 11 from the free throw line in the final 1:30. That included four misses in the final 30 seconds.

Philadelphiaâ??s last four field goals were 3-pointers that gave the visitorâ??s a chance at winning. Embiid hit the last of them with 5.1 seconds to play that cut the Sixers' deficit to 98-97.

Ben Simmons then stole the inbounds pass at the Magic end of the court and gave it to Embiid, who launched his desperation shot as the buzzer sounded.

                            HEAT 113, PACERS 112

MIAMI (AP) - Goran Dragic scored in the lane with 6.8 seconds remaining to cap a wild finish and Miami beat Indiana to improve to an NBA-best 14-1 at home.

Dragicâ??s shot was the third by Miami on the go-ahead possession, after Jimmy Butler and Kendrick Nunn both missed but the Heat were able to grab offensive rebounds. Aaron Holiday had a chance to win it for Indiana, but his 10-footer with about a second left bounced away.

Butler scored 20 points for Miami. Bam Adebayo had 18 points and 15 rebounds, including the offensive rebound that set up Dragicâ??s shot. Dragic had 14 points.

Aaron Holiday scored 17 points for Indiana.

                            BUCKS 112, HAWKS 86

Antetokunmpo, the league MVP last season and second-leading scorer this season, sat out because of back soreness. He watched from the bench as his teammates helped Milwaukee improve to 28-5.

The Hawks lost their ninth straight to drop to a league-worst 6-26. They lost guard Trae Young, the NBA's fourth-leading scorer, to a right ankle sprain late in the second quarter.

Jayson Tatum had 24 of his 30 points in the first half, Enes Kanter added 14 points, and Kemba Walker had 13 to help Boston improve to 13-1 at home.

Kevin Love matched his season high with 30 points and had seven rebounds for Cleveland.

                              • Saturday’s 6-pack

                                — North Carolina 55, Temple 13— Temple coach Carey is now 0-7 in bowls.

                                — Michigan 27, Wake Forest 21— Total was 51.5; no one scored in 4th quarter.

                                — Texas A&M 24, Oklahoma State 21— Aggies have only four seniors on whole roster.

                                — Air Force 31, Washington State 21— Flyboys ran ball for 371 yards.

                                — Falcons’ coach Dan Quinn will be back in Atlanta next year.

                                — Five bowl games on New Year’s Eve, only four on New Year’s Day; why?

                                Quote of the Day:
“We believe in championships here. Just as the fan base might be frustrated, the coaching staff and players are frustrated . . . we’re going to be a very good team next year.”
USC football coach Clay Helton, whose team was not good Friday

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

                                13) Pitt 34, Eastern Michigan 30— OK, never saw this before; Panthers score with 0:47 left to take a 34-30 lead, their first lead of the night. EMU was trying to drive for a winning score when their QB gets hit while throwing an incomplete pass with 0:10 left.

The QB gets up, one of the defenders says something to him, and the QB smacks the guy in the facemask— not good. He gets thrown out of the game; a kid playing his last college game, who threw for 311 yards and two TD’s, gets tossed before the last play. Oy.

                                12) Found a treasure trove of old knowledge Thursday, a website full of old stats from the USFL, which played from 1983-85. Was a very good league, good springtime entertainment.

22 different cities hosted USFL teams; Breakers played in a different city every year (Boston, New Orleans, Portland).

                                11) Steve Young led the LA Express to a 10-8 record in 1984, playing for coach John Hadl, who was an excellent QB himself in the old AFL for the Chargers, and then briefly for the Rams.

Young threw for 2,361 yards, ran for 515 more; they slipped to 3-15 the next year, losing a great 34-33 game to Jim Kelly and the Houston Gamblers early in the season, in front of a small gathering at the LA Coliseum.

When I say small crowd, the Express averaged 8,415 fans a game in the Coliseum. No bueno.

                                10) Tampa Bay Bandits averaged over 40,000 fans/game in their three-year run for Steve Spurrier, going 35-19. Florida alum John Reaves played QB most of the time for the Bandits; at one point, he was a 1st round draft pick of the Philadelphia Eagles.

                                9) Super Bowl winners by seed, since 1990:
seed #1) 14 Super Bowl champs
                                #2) 7
                                #3) 1 (Colts ’06)
                                #4) 4
                                #5) 1 (Giants ’07)
                                #6) 2 (Steelers ’05/Packers ’10)

                                8) Minnesota Vikings are locked into the #6 seed in the NFC; they’re likely to sit lot of guys this weekend, including QB Kirk Cousins.

                                7) Marshawn Lynch will apparently be paid $60,588 by the Seahawks this week.

For any NFL player with more than 10 years of experience, the minimum salary is $1,030,000 for the whole year, which breaks down to $60,588 per week over 17 weeks.

                                6) Washington Huskies’ QB Jacob Eason, the #4 NFL prospect at QB, according to ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr., announced Thursday that he will forgo his senior season and enter the NFL Draft.

                                5) Lebron James has played four games for the Lakers against the rival Clippers; he is 5-29 on the arc in those four games.

                                4) Louisiana Tech 14, Miami 0— Miami used three QB’s in this game; none of them played well. This is their first losing season since 2014. Not often the TV announcers are speculating during the game about the offensive coordinator getting fired.

Friday, the offensive coordinator got fired.

Miami lost nine of its last ten bowl games. Meanwhile, Skip Holtz is 6-0 in bowls at Louisiana Tech.

                                3) On November 12, Evansville upset Kentucky 67-64 in Rupp Arena, a great moment for the Purple Aces and their coach, Kentucky alum Walter McCarty.

Six weeks later, McCarty was put on leave by Evansville, after “……a troubling report about Coach McCarty’s interactions with a member of the campus community.”

Former Samford coach Bennie Seltzer is the Purple Aces’ interim head coach.

                                2) RIP Don Imus, 79, a legend on NYC radio who often made me laugh when I was driving to work. ESPN’s Mike Breen did the sports on Imus’ show for a while; Imus would bust his chops and make him laugh, while he was trying to read his report.

                                1) Aaron Rodgers, Danica Patrick recently bought a Malibu estate for $28M in cash; who doesn’t have $28M lying around?
