No. 1 Duke stunned by Stephen F. Austin

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) Nathan Bain stole the ball and hit a layup at the overtime buzzer and Stephen F. Austin knocked off No. 1 Duke 85-83 on Tuesday night, ending the Blue Devilsâ?? 150-game home winning streak against nonconference opponents.

They became the first non-Atlantic Coast Conference team to beat Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium in nearly 20 years and the second unranked team to upset a No. 1-ranked team on its home floor in two weeks after Evansville went into Rupp Arena and stunned Kentucky 67-64.

Duke had the ball in the closing seconds of overtime, but Tre Jones missed a jumper with about 15 seconds left and Wendell Moore rebounded it. Hounded by the Lumberjacksâ?? high-pressure defense, Hurt threw the ball away in a scramble with about 3 seconds left and it went to Bain - who went the length of the floor for a buzzer-beating layup.

Kevon Harris scored 26 points and Gavin Kensmil added 15 for the Lumberjacks (5-1).

Vernon Carey had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Blue Devils (6-1), who had 22 turnovers and were just 11 of 24 from the free-throw line in the second half.

No. 3 MICHIGAN STATE 93, GEORGIA 85

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) - Cassius Winston had 28 points and eight assists, and Michigan State withstood Anthony Edwardsâ?? second-half outburst to beat Georgia at the Maui Invitational.

Michigan State (4-2) was sharp early, building a 28-point lead early in the second half. Once Edwards got rolling, the Spartans had no answer.

Projected as a lottery pick, the 6-foot-5 Edwards brought the Bulldogs (3-2) back almost entirely by himself, scoring 33 of his 37 points in the second half.

Edwards hit 7 of 13 3s - many of those contested - in the second half and threw a two-handed, overhead bounce pass to Rayshaun Hammonds for a layup to pull Georgia within 75-73.

Michigan State gathered itself after the Edwardsâ?? onslaught, stretching the lead back to nine before hitting four straight free throws in the final 34 seconds.

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo called Winston a â??shell of himselfâ?? after a quiet game in the Maui opener against Virginia Tech.

No. 18 AUBURN 79, RICHMOND 65

NEW YORK (AP) - Samir Doughty scored 22 points to lead Auburn to a win over Richmond in the championship game of the Legends Classic.

Austin Wiley, who was named the tournament MVP, scored 18 points. He joined Doughty on the all-tournament team, along with Wisconsinâ??s Nate Reuvers, and Richmondâ??s Jacob Gilyard and Grant Golden.

Daniel Purifoy chipped in with 13 for Auburn, which improved to 7-0 overall, and 3-1 in four all-time meetings against the Spiders.

Following a five-game winning streak, Richmond dropped to 5-1 with its first loss of the season.

Golden led the Spiders with 14.

13) Stephen F Austin 85, Duke 83 OT— March Madness comes 100 days early. Really a great game and a shocking upset; Duke was a 27.5-point favorite.

Duke was 24-40 on the foul line, SFA 11-17; Lumberjacks were +6 (20-14) in turnovers. This was Duke’s first non-conference home loss since a 2000 game against St John’s. 19 years.

12) ESPN had to be hoping for a Kansas-UCLA semifinal in the Maui Classic, and then the winner playing Michigan State in the final; problem is, Michigan State/UC:A both got beat in the first round, meaning they’ll play in the 5th place game on Wednesday instead.

Big week of national TV exposure for Dayton, which whacked Georgia, Virginia Tech the last two days, and now gets a primetime game with Kansas in the Maui finals.

11) Michigan State 93, Georgia 85— Spartans were up 61-33 with 16:26 left to play, but Georgia stormed back and got within a hoop behind Anthony Edwards, who scored 33 of his 37 points in the second half.

Michigan State’s Cassius Winston is the first college basketball player since 2006 to make 1st team All-American one year and then return to college the next year (JJ Redick).

10) Pittsburgh beat Kansas State 63-59 Monday night; Pitt was 18-21 on foul line, Wildcats were only 3-13. Big difference. Oddly, K-State was 10-20 on the arc, Panthers 1-16. Wildcats were also +7 in turnovers (21-14) but they shot only 34.2% inside the arc.

9) Cleveland Browns are favored by two points in Pittsburgh this week; last time the Browns were favored in the Steel City was 1989, before the old Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens.

Steelers made it official Tuesday; 3rd-stringer Devlin Hodges starts at QB this week.

8) Northwestern has a basketball player named Pat Spencer who is a grad transfer from Loyola, MD, where he was the best college lacrosse player in the country last year. Spencer scored 9 ppg in the Wildcats’ first five games this season.

7) Good movie/TV trivia: Actress Kerris Dorsey plays the daughter in the great Showtime series Ray Donovan; she also played Billy Beane’s daughter in Moneyball.

6) Colorado 71, Clemson 67— Buffaloes rally in 2nd half to win tourney at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas; Pac-12 is an improved league (57-14 out of conference) so far this month.

5) Arizona State 67, Princeton 65— Sun Devils outscored Princeton 13-5 over the final 5:29 to pull out this road win. Princeton shot 64.5% inside the arc against ASU.

4) 49ers are a 6-point underdog in Baltimore Sunday, the first 10-1 team to be an underdog of 6+ points since 2007, when the Packers (+7) lost 37-27 in Dallas.

3) Arizona Diamondbacks signed lefty-hitting catcher Stephen Vogt to a 1-year deal, as catchers keep coming off the market.

2) There are 78 available slots for bowl games this year; right now, only 73 teams are bowl eligible, with 10 more teams having a shot at getting to 6-6 this week (Ohio U got to 6-6 Tuesday night). If five of those teams don’t win this week, then teams with a 5-7 record will be “rewarded” with a bowl appearance.

Not great.

1) UCLA 74, Chaminade 48— Chaminade’s mascot is a silversword, which is a flowering plant endemic to Hawaiʻi that grows on volcanic cinder.

The day before Thanksgiving should be a good one betting college basketball with a trio of highlighted matchups on the board from the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas.

This first tip is an early afternoon start between the SEC’s Alabama Crimson Tide and the ACC’s No. 5 North Carolina Tar Heels. Wednesday night’s action pits the West Coast Conference’s No. 8 Gonzaga Bulldogs against the Conference USA’s Southern Miss Golden Eagles.

This third featured game from Nassau is a much anticipated showdown between the Pac-12’s No. 11 Oregon Ducks and the Big East’s No. 13 Seton Hall Pirates.

Alabama vs. No. 5 North Carolina (ESPN+, 2:30 p.m. ET)
Opening Odds: Tar Heels -9, Total 157.5

Betting Matchup

The Crimson Tide have not been able to duplicate the football team’s success with a 2-2 start both straight-up and against the spread. They dropped an 81-80 decision against Penn as 7 ½-point favorites to start the season while also losing to Rhode Island 93-79 as one-point favorites. The total has gone OVER in three of the four games. Alabama is scoring an average of 79.5 points a game. Yet, they are allowing almost that many points (76.5) at the other end of the court.

North Carolina has won its first four games SU as one of the best teams in the nation. Closing as 22-point favorites or more in each of their last three matchups, the Tar Heels failed to cover in all three games. They opened the season with a 76-65 conference win against Notre Dame in the ACC to cover as 9 ½-point favorites. The total has stayed UNDER in all four outings. Freshman guard Cole Anthony has had the hot hand with a team-high 22.8 points per game while shooting 38 percent from the field.

Betting Trends

-- The Crimson Tide are 4-11 ATS over their last 15 games with the total going OVER in 12 of their last 15 nonconference games.

-- The Tar Heels have a 2-6-1 record ATS in their last nine games against the SEC. The total has stayed UNDER in six of their last seven games against this conference.

Betting Matchup

With Saturday’s 77-49 romp against Cal State Bakersfield as 27-point favorites, the Bulldogs are off to a perfect 6-0 SU start with a 4-2 record ATS. The tightest spread was 8 ½-points in a 79-49 victory against Texas A&M on Nov. 15. The total has stayed UNDER in their last three outings after going OVER in their first three games this season. Gonzaga has six different players on its roster scoring in double figures. The team is shooting an efficient 51.9 percent from the field.

With three SU losses wrapped around a pair of wins against Delta State and William Carey, this was not the start Southern Miss was looking for. The Golden Eagles did cover as underdogs in losses to South Alabama and North Florida. The lone bright spot has been the play of senior forward Boban Jacdonmi. He leads the team in scoring with 16.4 PPG while also pulling down 7.6 rebounds. He scored 29 points in the season opener against Delta State.

Betting Trends

-- The Bulldogs have covered in four of their last five games following a SU win. The total has stayed UNDER in six of their last eight games against a team from Conference USA.

-- The Golden Eagles are 5-2 ATS in their last seven nonconference games and the total has stayed UNDER in four of their last five games played at a neutral site.

Betting Matchup

The climb in the national rankings has been fueled by a perfect 5-0 SU start. The Ducks failed to cover as 14 ½-point favorites in a season-opening 71-57 victory against Fresno State but they have covered the closing number in each of their last four games. The total has gone OVER in three of their last four outings. In last Friday’s 78-66 win against Houston as a seven-point home favorite, Oregon’s senior guard Anthony Mathis scored a team-high 18 points. He has averaged 15 points through five previous starts.

Seton Hall’s 4-1 start (SU and ATS) is marred by a tight 76-73 loss to Michigan State as a 5 ½-point underdog. The Pirates failed to cover as 20 ½-point favorites in an earlier 74-57 victory against Stoney Brook. The total has gone OVER in three of the five games. They are averaging 84.4 points a game while allowing 64.2 points on defense. Senior guard Miles Powell has scored an average of 22.6 points in six starts. This average was boosted by his 37 points in the loss to Michigan State.

Winston, Michigan State close out Maui trip by beating UCLA

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) Devon Dotson scored 31 points, Udoka Azubuike had seven of his 29 in overtime and No. 4 Kansas outlasted Dayton 90-84 to win its third Maui Invitational title on Wednesday.

The Flyers and Jayhawks spent much of the afternoon trading leads and highlight-reel plays in a bleacher-shaking atmosphere inside the bandbox Lahaina Civic Center.

Kansas (6-1) used a late 11-0 run to go up by three, but Dayton's Jalen Crutcher buried a 3-pointer from about 5 feet behind the new, deeper arc with 2.1 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 73.

The Jayhawks went to Azubuike early in the overtime and the 7-footer delivered, scoring three baskets at the rim. A 32% free throw shooter entering the game, he also hit three from the line in overtime.

Marcus Garrett made three free throws in the final 18 seconds to seal Kansas' second Maui title in four years.

Ryan Mikesell led Dayton with 19 points but missed two free throws with 11.5 seconds left and the Flyers (5-1) down five. Obi Toppin scored 18 points.

NO. 3 MICHIGAN STATE 75, UCLA 62

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) - Cassius Winston scored 20 points, Xavier Tillman had 14 and Michigan State beat UCLA in the Maui Invitational fifth-place game.

The Spartans (5-2) opened the tournament with a loss to Virginia Tech, but bounced back with consecutive solid performances.

Winston had a second straight strong performance after struggling in the opener and Michigan State used an 18-2 advantage in fast break points to close its Maui trip with a flourish.

Chris Smith had 13 points and Cody Riley scored 11 for UCLA (5-3).

NO. 6 NORTH CAROLINA 76, ALABAMA 67

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) - Garrison Brooks scored 16 of his 20 points in the first half and North Carolina overwhelmed Alabama on the glass in a Battle 4 Atlantis first-round game.

Freshman big man Armando Bacot had 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Tar Heels (5-0), who entered the game as the nation's No. 1 team in rebounding margin. The Tar Heels nearly doubled the Crimson Tide to finish with a 60-31 edge on the glass.

John Petty Jr. scored 23 points with seven 3-pointers for the Crimson Tide (2-3), though 15 points and five of those 3s came in the first half. Preseason all-Southeastern Conference pick Kira Lewis Jr. added 20 points.

NO. 7 VIRGINIA 46, MAINE 26

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Mamadi Diakite scored 15 points and Jay Huff had 13 as Virginia beat Maine.

The Cavaliers (7-0) played without starting guard Braxton Key, their second-leading scorer and top rebounder, after the school said he had wrist surgery and will be sidelined indefinitely. They also were without Kody Stattmann, another starter, who missed his fourth consecutive game with an undisclosed illness.

Maine (2-4) kept it close for much of the game, more because Virginia had trouble scoring than anything else.

Vilgot Larsson led the Black Bears with nine points. They finished 8 for 43 from the field (18.6%) and had 21 turnovers that led to 20 Cavaliers points.

NO. 8 GONZAGA 94, SOUTHERN MISS 69

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) - Corey Kispert broke loose from a brutal three-game shooting funk to match his career high with 28 points and hit seven 3-pointers as Gonzaga beat Southern Miss in the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Joel Ayayi added 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs (7-0), who had no trouble against a team picked to finish last in Conference USA.

Killian Tillie, a preseason all-West Coast Conference pick, didn't play.

LaDavius Draine shook free of his own outside shooting struggles for Southern Miss, scoring 19 points and making 5 of 9 3-pointers after connecting on 6 of 26 through the team's first five games.

NO. 11 OREGON 71, NO. 13 SETON HALL 69

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) - Shakur Juiston scored on a putback with 14.4 seconds left and Oregon rallied from 19 points down in the second half to beat Seton Hall 71-69 in the opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis.

The Ducks (6-0) trailed 49-30 early in the second half but hung around despite a brilliant performance from Seton Hall's Myles Powell, who had 32 points for the No. 2 scoring total in the nine-year history of the event.

Payton Pritchard led the Ducks with 16 points. With Oregon having a chance to go ahead, Pritchard airballed a 3-pointer - only to have the ball end up with Juiston underneath for the putback and Oregon's first lead of the second half.

Seton Hall (4-2) had a final chance after C.J. Walker missed free throws with 5.3 seconds left, but Powell's long running heave hit only the backboard to end it.

11) Michigan State 75, UCLA 63— Bruins go to Maui after losing at home to Hofstra and get one win, over D-II Chaminade, so they’ve lost their last three D-I games. The Thanksgiving Day Holiday offers up a pair of neutral-site games in Las Vegas and Anaheim as the two featured college basketball betting matchups on the board.

From Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, the Big 12’s No. 12 Texas Tech Red Raiders face the Big Ten’s Iowa Hawkeyes. Moving to the Anaheim Convention Center for the second featured game, the West Coast Conference Pepperdine Waves close out Thursday’s college basketball schedule in a late start against the Pac-12’s No. 14 Arizona Wildcats

Betting Matchup

With Sunday’s 96-66 romp against LIU-Brooklyn as 24-point favorites, the Red Raiders improved to a perfect 5-0 straight-up and 4-1 against the spread. The total has gone OVER in three of the five games. The No. 12 team in the nation is ranked ninth in scoring with an average of 87.0 points per game. This is also the top team in the country when it comes to team assists (22.0). Freshman guard Jahmi’us Ramsey is the leading scorer (19.4 PPG) and senior guard Chris Clarke is averaging 5.8 assists a game.
