Maryland routs Oakland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) Darryl Morsell led a balanced attack with 14 points and No. 7 Maryland used a strong defensive effort to power past Oakland 80-50 Saturday.

Anthony Cowan Jr. contributed 11 points, seven assists and six rebounds for the Terrapins, Aaron Wiggins scored 10 and Jalen Smith added eight points and seven rebounds.

After opening with lopsided victories at home against Holy Cross and Rhode Island, Maryland is off a 3-0 start for the sixth year in a row. The Terps are 33-6 at home over the past two-plus seasons.

Xavier Hill-Mais led Oakland (3-2) with 18 points. The Golden Grizzlies shot 36.5%, were outrebounded 40-30 and went 6 for 15 at the foul line.

The Terrapins used layups by Smith and Morsell to turn a 35-22 halftime lead into a 17-point cushion. Minutes later, Morsell contributed a pair of 3-pointers to a 12-3 run that made it 56-31 with 12:28 left.

Morsell, a 6-foot-5 junior guard, went 6 for 8 from the field and had seven rebounds in only 21 minutes.

No. 9 VIRGINIA 60, COLUMBIA 42

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Mamadi Diakite and Jay Huff scored 13 points each and Virginia beat Columbia.

Kihei Clark added 10 points for the Cavaliers (3-0), who led 31-17 at halftime and substituted liberally throughout the second half. Walk-on Chase Coleman and redshirt freshman Francisco Caffaro each scored the first points of their college careers late in the game.

Mike Smith scored 16 points to lead the Lions (1-3), whose point total was the highest Virginia has allowed this season. The Lions finished 16 of 56 from the field (28.6 %) and were 4 for 11 from 3-point territory.

No. 10 VILLANOVA 78, OHIO 54

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Saddiq Bey scored 19 points and Justin Moore added 18 to lead Villanova past Ohio.

Villanova (2-1) broke the game open with a 27-4 run in the final 6:36 of the half, turning a one-point deficit into a 43-21 lead. Bey and Moore combined for 9-for-12 shooting and 4 of 6 from beyond the 3-point line for 26 points.

The Wildcats finished 14 of 31 from long range. Ohio shot 3 of 20, with its first conversion from Ben Vander Plas three minutes into the second half.

Vander Plas led the Bobcats (3-1) with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Jason Preston added 16 points and eight assists.

Jeremiah Robinson-Earl had 11 points and 11 rebounds and Colin Gillespie scored 10 points for Villanova.

No. 13 MEMPHIS 102, ALCORN STATE 56

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Lester Quinones had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Precious Achiuwa added 20 points, sending Memphis to a romp over Alcorn State.

Top recruit James Wiseman was sidelined because of eligibility issues, but Memphis hardly missed him in bouncing back from its first defeat of the season, an 82-74 loss to Oregon on Tuesday night.

DJ Jeffries finished with 15 points and Tyler Harris and Lance Thomas added 11 each for Memphis (3-1). Isaiah Attles led Alcorn State (1-3) with 13 points while Troymain Crosby had 10.

This was Memphis' first game without Wiseman, the freshman center who was last season's top recruit in the country. He was declared ineligible because Memphis coach Penny Hardaway helped with the family's moving expenses from Nashville to Memphis two years ago when Hardaway was coach at East High School. Wiseman's status is in limbo while the NCAA considers disciplinary action.

TENNESSEE 75, No. 20 WASHINGTON 62

TORONTO (AP) - Jordan Bowden scored 15 of his 18 points in the first half, Lamonte Turner had 16 points and Tennessee upset Washington.

Yves Pons scored 15 points, John Fulkerson had 14 and Turner added seven rebounds and eight assists as the Volunteers improved to 3-0 and handed Washington its first loss in three games this season.

The game was the middle feature in the James Naismith Hall of Fame Classic, an NCAA triple header at Scotiabank Arena in downtown Toronto, home of the defending NBA-champion Raptors.

Washington, which began its season with a neutral-site win over ranked Baylor, didn't fare so well north of the border, falling behind by as many as 14 against the Volunteers.

The Huskies struggled for the second straight game. Washington overcame an awful offensive first half to pull away for a 56-46 win over Mount St. Mary's Tuesday.

Nahziah Carter had 18 points and 12 rebounds, Isaiah Stewart had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Jaden McDaniels scored 15 for the Huskies.

No. 23 LSU 75, NICHOLLS STATE 65

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Darius Days had a career-high 17 points and 11 rebounds to help LSU beat Nicholls State.

Emmitt Williams added 11 points and a season-best 12 boards for the Tigers (2-1).

Skylar Mays was the leading scorer for the Tigers (2-1) with 18 points. Trendon Watford scored 17 points - all but three in the first half - for LSU.

Dexter McClanahan was the top scorer for the Colonels (2-2) with 20 points. D'Angelo Hunter had 15 points for Nicholls State.

The Tigers took control of the game by scoring ten consecutive points in the second half to break a 48-48 tie. Days had two field goals in this stretch. The Colonels came no closer than five points the rest of the game.

Nicholls State took a 29-21 lead in the first half after scoring nine consecutive points. McClanahan made two baskets, including a 3-pointer, during that stretch.

No. 25 COLORADO 71, SAN DIEGO 53

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - D'Shawn Schwartz scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, helping Colorado run past scrappy San Diego for coach Tad Boyle's 10th winner in 10 home openers.

Tyler Bey added 14 points and two impressive blocked shots on Braun Hartfield, one a thunderous rejection and the other a swipe and steal that was equally athletic.

Lucas Siewert and McKinley Wight IV each chipped in 11 points for the Buffaloes (2-0), who avenged losses to the Toreros (2-3) in each of the last seasons.

Hard not to root for the kid; he played for his dad in HS, is named after Peyton Manning and said he loves the team too much to transfer somewhere else. He was 31-41/371 passing in this game, ran for two TD’s, threw for one in a losing cause. Indiana is 7-3 and headed to a bowl.

Marquette won three of last four games with Wisconsin, winning last two trips to Madison, by 2-19 points. Golden Eagles are off to 2-0 start, beating Purdue by 10 in last game Wednesday when Marquette trailed by 13 at half but outscored Boilers 40-17 in 2nd half. Poaching the McEwen kid from Utah State will help Marquette a lot- he had 23 vs Purdue. Wisconsin beat couple of stiffs by 13-20 points after losing by hoop to Saint Mary’s in their opener; Badgers start four seniors and a senior- they’re playing slow (#344) pace, shooting only 27.7% on arc.

Arizona is off to a 3-0 start, beating Illinois by 21 in between couple of wins over stiffs by 39-48 points; Wildcats start three frosh, two seniors, have two starters back from LY’s 17-15 team that went 8-10 in Pac-12. People are saying Arizona’s frosh PG Mannion is the best PG of the Mller era in Tucson. New Mexico State lost by 15 at UTEP, then beat Southern by 16; Aggies start five seniors, have four starters back from LY’s 30-5 team that went 15-1 in WAC and made NCAA’s, losing first round game to Auburn by a point.

Wake Forest beat Charlotte the last three years, all by 17+ points; Deacons lost their only road game this year 77-70 at Boston College, then beat Columbia/NC-Asheville by 12-19 points. Wake doesn’t force many turnovers, doesn’t take many 3’s; they’re getting 25.8% of their points on foul line (#27). Deacons start two seniors, are experience team #151. STORRS, Conn. (AP) Christian Vital scored 15 points and made a key late steal and UConn upset No. 15 Florida 62-59 on Sunday.

Tyler Polley also scored 15 points, and Josh Carlton added 13 for the Huskies (2-1).

A layup by Florida's Keyontae Johnson with just over a minute to go cut the lead to 60-59, but those would be the last points the Gators scored. Vital hit two free throws with 17 seconds left and Florida had a chance to tie. But Alterique Gilbert tipped the ball out of Johnson's hands and Vital grabbed it and dribbled away.

Kerry Blackshear Jr. had 15 points and eight rebounds for Florida (2-2).

NO. 4 LOUISVILLE 87, NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL 58

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Jordan Nwora scored 17 points and Louisville routed North Carolina Central.

The Cardinals (4-0) once again had the hot hand on offense. They entered the game ninth in the country in shooting at 54.1%, and they shot 66.7% against the Eagles. It marked the fifth time in the past decade Louisville shot better than 60 percent from the floor, and was its best shooting effort since making 65.2% in an 80-68 victory at Pittsburgh on Jan. 25, 2015.

Nwora needed only 21 minutes to do his damage as coach Chris Mack had a chance to play 11 players in the blowout. Steven Enoch made 7-of-9 shots to add 15 points. Dwayne Sutton scored 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting, and Darius Perry was perfect on four shots for 10 points and seven assists.

Randy Miller Jr. led the Eagles (1-3) with 15 points

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Myles Powell scored 26 points and Sandro Mamukelashvili added 17 in Seton Hall's victory over Saint Louis.

Quincy McKnight added 12 points to help the Pirates (3-1) rebound from a 76-73 loss to No.3 Michigan State on Thursday night.

Hasahn Frnech led Saint Louis with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Seton Hall scored the first 10 points and led 18-3 after 7:09. The Pirates made seven straight shots during the early blitz. Saint Louis got no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

NO. 19 ARIZONA 83, NEW MEXICO STATE 53

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Zeke Nnaji did not miss a shot for the second straight game while scoring 19 points, Jemarl Baker added 16 points and Arizona rolled over depleted New Mexico State.

Arizona (4-0) took advantage of the short-handed Aggies (2-2) from the start, scoring the first 10 points and using another big run to lead by 22 at halftime. The Wildcats were at their free-flowing offensive best, shooting 53%.

Nnaji made all seven of his shots after going 8 for 8 against San Jose State and is 32 for 38 in four games this season. The 6-foot-11 freshman has made 17 straight shots, dating to the second half a week ago against Illinois.

Jabari Rice had 14 points to lead New Mexico State. The Aggies shot 33%.

No. 3 Michigan State breezes past Charleston Southern

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) Xavier Tillman scored a career-high 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help No. 3 Michigan State tune up with a 94-46 win over Charleston Southern on Monday night.

The Spartans (3-1) were without starting forward Aaron Henry, who rolled both ankles in last week's win over then-No. 12 Seton Hall, in the on-campus game that is part of the Maui Invitational.

Michigan State's Gabe Brown made his first career start in place of Henry and the sophomore scored a season-high 12 points.

Cassius Winston added 11 points and eight assists for the Spartans. He told their fans they're keeping him going while dealing with the death of his brother earlier this month.

The Buccaneers (1-4) have had four straight lopsided losses since opening with a win over Columbia International.

Charleston Southern's Dontrell Shuler had 15 points and Terence Porter scored 11 points.

NO. 9 KENTUCKY 82, UTAH VALLEY 74

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Ashton Hagans scored a career-high 26 points, and Kentucky survived another close game against what should have been a lesser opponent in Utah Valley.

The Wildcats (3-1) dropped out of the No. 1 spot in The Associated Press Top 25 after losing at home to Evansville last week, and they had to overcome a late surge to hold off the Wolverines.

Kentucky led by 16 points early in the second half, but Utah Valley steadily chipped away until T.J. Washington's 3-pointer got the Wolverines (3-2) within one at 68-67 with 3:26 remaining. Nate Sestina responded with a three-point play that helped the Wildcats pull away.

Nick Richards had 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Tyrese Maxey added 14 points for Kentucky.

Washington led the Wolverines with 22 points, followed by Trey Woodbury with 17 and Jamison Overton with 10.

NO. 10 OHIO STATE 86, STETSON 51

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Kyle Young had a career-high 15 points and Kaleb Wesson added 13 to lead Ohio State past Stetson.

The Buckeyes (4-0), who moved up six spots in the AP Top 25 after beating then-No. 10 Villanova last week, jumped out to a 28-3 lead against the overmatched Hatters (2-2), built a 42-14 halftime advantage and cruised in the second half.

D.J. Carton had 10 points and Justin Ahrens had nine, hitting three 3-pointers. Young completed his double-double with 10 boards.

The bright spot for Stetson was Rob Perry, who finished with 17 points.

NO. 15 UTAH STATE 82, UTSA 50

LOGAN, Utah (AP) - Sam Merrill scored 21 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead Utah State past UTSA.

Diogo Brito added 17 points and Brock Miller chipped in 10 for the Aggies. Justin Bean and Alphonso Anderson each had 11 rebounds.

Utah State (5-0) dominated the inside, outrebounding UTSA 55-36, outscoring the Roadrunners 46-16 in the paint and 38-8 in second-chance points.

Jhivvan Jackson scored 15 points to lead the Roadrunners (0-5).

NO. 19 AUBURN 91, COLGATE 62

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Samir Doughty scored 20 points, Austin Wiley had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Auburn rolled past Colgate.

The Tigers improved to 5-0 for the first time in 15 years.

Colgate (1-3) struggled to get anything going against the Tigers' overwhelming size and suffocating defense. Jordan Burns had 18 points and Rapolas Ivanauskas added 12 for the Raiders.

NO. 23 COLORADO 69, UC IRVINE 53

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - Tyler Bey and McKinley Wright each scored 16 points and Colorado leaned on a strong defensive effort to beat UC Irvine.

Colorado (3-0) pressured Irvine into 22 turnovers leading to 21 points for the Buffaloes, who have won all eight of their meetings with the Anteaters. It was the 17th win in Colorado's last 19 home games.

Collin Welp had 12 points to lead Irvine (3-2). Tommy Rutherford added 10 points.
