    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

    — Blue Jays 19, Rangers 4— Toronto is 10-5 since Bo Bichette was called up.

    — Nationals 7, Reds 6— Aristides Aquino has 15 hits, 8 HR’s in his first 35 at-bats.

    — Rays 10, Padres 4— Tampa Bay won eight in a row vs San Diego.

    — Indians 5, Red Sox 4— Cleveland is in 1st place by itself for first time since April 20.

    — JD Martinez has his batting practice videotaped every day, so he can analyze it.

    — Chiefs’ rookie QB Kyle Shurmur was 6-15 for 77 yards and a TD in KC’s 38-17 win Saturday; he is the son of Giants’ coach Pat Shurmur.

Today would’ve been my parents’ 64th wedding anniversary; congrats to them up in heaven.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

    13) Miami Hurricanes will start redshirt freshman Jarren Williams at QB when they open their season against Florida next week, which means that Ohio State transfer Tate Martell may have transferred to the wrong school- he was expected to start.

Martell is from Las Vegas; if he transferred home now, he could sit out next year, then play for UNLV in 2021 and 2022.

    12) Bryce Harper jumped from Washington to the Phillies this season, but as of August 12, here are the standings in the NL East:

    Braves 70-50
    Nationals 63-55
    Mets 61-57
    Phillies 60-58
    Marlins 44-73

They also traded for catcher JT Realmuto last winter. If the Phillies don’t make the playoffs, how does manager Gabe Kapler keep his job?

    11) Dak Prescott turned down a $30M a year offer from the Cowboys. Word is he wants $40M a year, which I’m pretty sure ain’t going to happen, at least not this year.

Russell Wilson makes $35M a year, Carson Wentz makes $32M. Wilson has won a Super Bowl and Wentz hasn’t, nor has Prescott. Wonder if Prescott would take $32M a year?

    10) Jets kicker Chandler Catanzaro missed two PAT’s Thursday, then retired Saturday before the Jets could tell him to take a hike. Catanzaro kicked for four teams the last five years; he will be replaced by Taylor Bertolet, who kicked for the Salt Lake Stallions in the ill-fated AAF.

    9) Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 55-105 in the 10 years since Jon Gruden last coached there.

    8) If you thought you had a bad day, thieves recently broke into Alex Rodriguez’ rented SUV and made off with $500,000 worth of electronics and jewelry in San Francisco— ARod was there to broadcast the Phillies-Giants game Sunday night.

    7) Baseball stuff:
    — Reds claimed SS Freddie Galvis off waivers from Toronto.
    — Red Sox put IF Michael Chavis (shoulder) on IL.

    6) The 2020 baseball schedule is out; the A’s open next season on March 26 at home against the Twins. There are going to be some cold fans around the country on March 26. Starting a season that early and finishing it in late September is a little odd.

    5) Mets and Marlins will play a three-game series in San Juan, Puerto Rico on April 28-30.

    4) Gleyber Torres has 26 home runs this year; 13 of them are against the Orioles.

    3) Caddy Steve Williams worked six tournaments for golfer Jason Day, then got told to take a hike; Day finished above 40th in only two of the six tournaments.

    2) Random beverage item: Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte returns to menus on August 27, it’s earliest-ever recorded official launch. Just thought you’d like to know.

    1) We can put a man on the moon, but we can’t find a football helmet that Antonio Brown likes that is less than 10 years old?

-- Favorites went 10-3 straight up (SU)
-- Favorites went 7-5-1 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams went 9-4 SU
        -- Home/road teams went 6-6-1 ATS
        -- The 'over' went 10-3

        Season Totals To Date

-- Favorites are 92-52 straight up (SU)
-- Underdogs 78-62-4 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams are 88-56 SU
-- Road teams are 74-66-4 ATS
        -- The 'under' is 77-65-2

        Team Betting Notes

-- Atlanta (5-19 SU, 10-14 ATS) continues to careen out of control, losing both games in the past week, pushing their losing streak to nine games. They're also just 2-5 ATS across the past seven. The Dream have started to struggle on the defensive end again, allowing 85 or more points in each of the past three contests with the 'over' hitting in each.

-- Chicago (14-10 SU, 16-7-1 ATS) continues to be a friend of bettors at the window, cashing in each of their past six while hitting the 'over' in each of the past five. Chicago ranks No. 2 overall in the WNBA with 81.9 points per game (PPG), while allowing 80.9 PPG, good for 11th in the WNBA in scoring defense.

-- Connecticut (16-8 SU, 10-15 ATS) slipped into second place this week with a pair of road losses and non-covers after a seven-game winning streak. The Sun have been terrible against the number, going just 1-5 ATS across the past six.

-- Dallas (7-17 SU, 12-12 ATS) had a rare 'over' result in their testy game in Phoenix (11-12 SU, 11-11-1 ATS), just their fifth over in 22 games overall this season. The Wings continue to struggle on the offensive end, ranking dead-last in the WNBA with 69.8 PPG. They're also second in the league in scoring defense at 74.8 PPG.

-- Indiana (9-16 SU, 11-13-1 ATS) has pulled into fourth place in the Eastern standings, which is no small feat considering they were one of the worst performers in the WNBA last season. They're currently the ninth seed, three games back of the Mercury for the final playoff seed with nine games remaining in the regular season. The Fever have won three of the past four overall, but they're still a dismal 1-4-1 ATS over the past six, and 2-6-1 ATS across the past nine.

-- Las Vegas (16-9 SU, 10-15 ATS) has been playing without star C A'ja Wilson (ankle), and she will be sidelined until at least late August. Even so, they won a key battle against the Sun on Sunday, 89-81, and they're a respectable 5-2 SU aross the past seven.

-- Also in the West, Los Angeles (15-8 SU, 12-10-1 ATS) remains tied with the Aces for first place, and they have two games in hand, too. The Sparks have rattled off five in a row, and eight of the past nine, while going 4-1 ATS over the past five. The 'over' has hit in three in a row, as the Sparks are averaging 84.7 PPG during the span.

-- Minnesota (12-12 SU, 13-10-1 ATS) was humbled by Washington (17-7 SU, 13-10-1 ATS) for the second time in the past 18 days, falling 101-78 in D.C. on Sunday. They're 13-8-1 against everyone else, and 0-2 ATS against the Mystics.

-- New York (8-15 SU, 9-13 ATS) fell behind Indiana in the race for a playoff spot. They have dropped five in a row, and eight of the past nine, while the Liberty have posted an 0-4 ATS mark in the past four, and 2-7 ATS in the previous nine. The Liberty will look to get well against Minnesota on Tuesday evening.

-- The Mercury are struggling to find tertiary scoring this season, and it's one of the reasons they're barely alive in the playoff rce. They have posted a 1-4 SU mark over the past five outings, although they are a respectable 5-2 ATS across the past seven. The 'over' is also 3-0 in the past three, and 5-1 in the past six, as their defense has gone south recently. Rebounding is also a problem, as the Merc rank dead-last in offensive rebounds (32.1 RPG), while checking in 10th in defensive boards (36.6 RPG).

-- Defending WNBA champion Seattle (14-11 SU, 13-11-1 ATS) has cobbled together a two-game winning streak, and they're 6-3 SU over the past nine while also going 6-3 ATS. They're also a solid 5-3 ATS across the past eight outings away from home.

-- The Mystics have managed a 7-1 SU record across the past eight, and the 'over' has cashed in five consecutive outings. They continue to score the basketball well, hitting 91 or more points in two straight, four of the past five and six of the past eight outings.

Preview: Lynx (12-12) at Liberty (8-15)
            Date: August 13, 2019 7:00 PM EDT

The Minnesota Lynx try to put more ground between themselves and the bottom four of the league Tuesday night when they face the struggling New York Liberty.

The Lynx (12-12) are currently seventh in the WNBA and would need to finish fifth or sixth to host a first-round playoff game. Minnesota has a 3 1 /2-game lead over ninth-place Indiana with 10 games remaining and trails fourth-place Las Vegas by 3 1/2 games for a postseason bye into the second round.

Cheryl Reeve's team was unable to complete a sweep of the top two teams in the league after getting pummeled 101-78 at Washington on Sunday. The Lynx barely resembled the team that thumped Connecticut by 32 points Friday night, allowing the Mystics to shoot 54.8 percent while getting outscored 27-10 at the foul line.

"We've got one of the top defensive teams in the league, but you would not know that by watching this game today," Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve fumed to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "We had zero concept of defending the post. Zero. Three players with 20-plus points - 25, 23 and 20 on our defense."

Odyssey Sims had 20 points and eight assists while rookie Napheesa Collier contributed 11 points, six rebounds and five assists. Minnesota has lost five of seven overall and four of five on the road - with the lone win coming against WNBA-worst Atlanta. In the three road games in that span the Lynx played outside Atlanta, they gave up 87.7 points per game - well above their season average of 75.3 that ranks third in the league.

The playoffs appear to be out of reach for New York (8-15), which is three games behind Phoenix for the eighth and final spot. The Liberty are trying to avoid their first six-game skid since ending last year with 13 straight losses and have dropped eight of nine overall after an 84-69 home defeat to Seattle on Sunday.

Tina Charles had 22 points and eight rebounds to pace the Liberty, who committed nine of their 19 turnovers in a decisive third quarter in which they were outscored 27-12.

"We dug ourselves a hole again in the second half," coach Katie Smith told Elite Sports New York. "We knew they were going to ratchet up their pressure, knew they were going to fly around. We turned over the ball in the second half. ... (It was) "same as Chicago, same as Dallas. We can't turn it over."

Starting forward Amanda Zahui B. is currently in the league's concussion protocol and her status for this game is uncertain. Asia Durr, the No. 2 overall pick who has averaged 9.7 points in 18 games, is questionable after aggravating a groin injury that caused her to miss Sunday's contest.

The teams have split the first two meetings this year, with the home team winning both. The Lynx won the most recent matchup 92-83 on June 22 as Sims, Collier and Sylvia Fowles combined for 58 points on 24-of-38 shooting.
