    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

    — Phillies 9, Dodgers 8— Bryce Harper had the game-winning double.

    — Cubs 4, Reds 3 (10)— Schwarber hit a walk-off homer for Chicago.

    — Giants 8, Rockies 4 (10)— Alex Dickerson had four hits for red-hot SF.

    — Indians 8, Tigers 0— Detroit had only two baserunners.

    — Royals 11, White Sox 0— Chicago is 0-5 since All-Star break.

    — Angels 7, Astros 1— Halos are 5-0 since the All-Star break.

    **********

    Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

    13) Big week here in beautiful upstate New York; Tuesday was the first day of legalized sports betting at the Rivers Casino in Schenectady, which is 15.6 miles from Armadillo World HQ, according to MapQuest.

Will report back to you guys when I make my first visit to the new sportsbook, which will be this afternoon for some day baseball.

    12) Would major league baseball ever go to a split-season system, where the season reboots at the halfway mark and everyone is 0-0, with first-half and second-half winners meeting in the playoffs?

This is one of those radical change ideas that I’m not necessarily against; it would discourage teams from giving up at this time of year and create renewed hope for teams that had a cruddy first half.

    11) Last three weeks, winner on the PGA Tour was a first-time winner, but only two of the three guys got an invite to the British Open- the guy who won the 3M tournament in Minnesota didn’t get an invite and I’m wondering why?

    10) Philadelphia 76ers signed Ben Simmons to a 5-year, $170M contract extension; hopefully he’ll take some of that money, buy a basketball, and practice shooting it this summer.

Simmons has a career 58.3% mark on the foul line; he is 0-17 in his career behind the arc. You make $34M a year, would be nice if you could at least make 70% on the foul line.

    9) LSU’s new passing game coordinator in 28-year old Joe Brady, who comes to LSU from the Saints. Brady isn’t LSU’s offensive coordinator; Steve Ensminger has that job, but Brady was brought in to make the Tigers’ offense more diverse. We’ll see.

    8) ESPN+ is going to have an all-access series featuring Kansas football which means that we’ll have a lot more Les Miles quotes to sift through, never a bad thing.

    7) Baseball stuff:
    — Cubs put C Willson Contreras (strained arch) on IL
    — Cubs acquired C Martin Maldonado from KC for P Mike Montgomery.
    — Giants put 3B Evan Longoria (foot) on the IL.
    — Mets put P Zack Wheeler (shoulder) on IL, so much for trading him.
    — Dodgers put IF/OF Chris Taylor (broken arm) on IL.
    — Phillies’ OF Jay Bruce left Tuesday’s game (oblique).

    6) The Madden video game has Eli Manning as the worst starting QB in the NFL; Aaron Rodgers is ranked #7, so we’re not 100% sure the Madden people know whats up. Rodgers played LY with a broken bone in his leg and a sprained MCL.

    5) New York 8, Tampa Bay 3— Five of CC Sabathia’s 15 starts this year have come against the Rays, which is unusual. Sabathia was jawing with Avasail Garcia at one point and the benches emptied, but like 95% of such events in baseball, nothing happened.

    4) Redskins’ QB Alex Smith broke his leg back in November; it is said to be a career-threatening injury. He finally had the brace removed Monday, on July 15, eight months later.

    3) College basketball transfer portal:
    — Cleveland State G Tyree Appleby bolts to Florida.

    2) Angels pitcher Noe Ramirez drilled Houston OF Jake Marisnick in the first game Marisnick played against the Angels since he broke Angels’ C Jonathan Lucroy’s nose in a home plate collision over a week ago. Benches emptied, but nothing happened.

Years ago, the play at the plate wouldn’t even have been mentioned on Sports Center, other than Lucroy getting hurt, but it today’s softer society, it became a thing for a while.

    1) In June, 1,899 vehicle break-ins were reported in San Francisco, or roughly 63 per day. Those are the ones that were reported. Just thought you’d like to know.

      WNBA Betting Recap - 7/9-7/15
      Joe Williams

League Betting Notes (Tuesday, July 9 through Monday, July 15)

-- Favorites went 9-7 straight up (SU)
-- Favorites/underdogs went 8-8 against the spread (ATS)
      -- Home/road teams went 8-8 SU
-- Home teams went 9-7 ATS
      -- The 'under' went 9-7

      Season Totals To Date

-- Favorites are 56-44 straight up (SU)
-- Underdogs 58-39-3 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams are 57-43 SU
-- Road teams are 51-46-3 ATS
      -- The 'under' is 59-41

      Team Betting Notes

-- Atlanta (5-11 SU, 7-9 ATS) has come alive with three victories over the past four outings, and covers in four in a row before an overtime setback at home against Los Angeles (9-7 SU, 8-7-1 ATS) on Sunday. The under has connected in four of the past five for the Dream, too.

-- As far as the Sparks are concerned, they have won five of the past six, and they're 5-1 ATS during the impressive span, too. After an 0-3 ATS run on the road, Los Angeles have covered each of their past two away from home.

-- Chicago (9-8 SU, 10-6-1 ATS) has won and covered back-to-back games, and they're an impressive 4-1 ATS over the past five outings. They're also a solid 3-3 SU over the past six on the road, while going a strong 4-1-1 ATS during the solid stretch. The over has also cashed in five straight outings on the road for the Sky.

-- After showing signs of life, Dallas (5-11 SU, 8-8 ATS) is back to struggling again. They're just 1-4 SU/ATS across the past five outings, and a lack of offense plus struggles on defense has been the recipe for losing.

-- Indiana (6-12 SU, 9-9 ATS) have dropped three in a row since their impressive 20-point win in Dallas on July 5. They have also failed to cover in back-to-back games after a 3-0 ATS run. It won't get any easier with a rough schedule coming up over the next five.

-- Las Vegas (11-5 SU, 6-10 ATS) have rattled off five consecutive victories in a row, including a key revenge game and showdown in Washington (9-6 SU, 8-7 ATS) over the weekend, avenging an embarrassing 23-point loss to the Mystics on June 20. The Aces are still struggling against the number, however, going just 3-7 ATS across the past 10.

-- Speaking of the Mystics, they have fallen on hard times after a 9-3 SU/8-4 ATS start. They have dropped three in a row and failed to cover in each, allowing 91.3 points per game (PPG) during the span. As such, the 'over' has connected in all three outings.

-- Minnesota (10-7 SU, 10-6-1 ATS) have scratched and clawed their way to second play in the Western standings, just 1 1/2 games back of Vegas. The Lynx have caught fire lately, winning and covering four of the past five. Total bettors are happy with them, too, as the 'under' has hit in four consecutive outings.

-- Consistency continues to elude New York (7-10 SU, 7-9-1 ATS), as they have dropped and failed to cover three in a row after a four-game winning streak from June 28-July 5, including three straight wins on the road. The Liberty are playing shoddy defense again, and that's the key to their losing ways lately.

-- Phoenix (7-8 SU, 6-8-1 ATS) won an impressive game in D.C., topping the Mystics by 23 points on July 10. However, they failed to capture the momentum, losing games in Connecticut and Minnesota both by at least 13 points. After a 3-0 ATS run from June 23-30, the Mercury are a dismal 1-4 ATS across the past five.

-- As far as the defending WNBA champs are concerned, Seattle (10-8 SU, 9-8-1 ATS) heads into the new week with a game in Minnesota on Wednesday. The Storm have won and covered two in a row, but they have yet to win and cover in three straight so far this season. The under is 3-3 over the past six outings, but 12-5-1 in 18 games overall.

DALLAS WINGS AT PHOENIX MERCURY (-7.5, 146)

Phoenix and Dallas run at the two slowest paces in the league. They're also among two of the lowest scoring teams in the league with Dallas putting up the second-fewest points at 70.8 points per game, while the Mercury have the third-fewest total at 73.4 ppg.

Dallas is especially brutal at putting the ball in the hoop during the first half of games, averaging 33.8 ppg. Phoenix is worse in the second half where they put up just 35.2 ppg, but they average a decent 38.2 ppg in the first 20 minutes.

Dallas is 0-7 on the road and has an average scoring margin of minus-8.9 during the first half. Considering the Mercury's scoring woes in the second half I'm not comfortable backing them on the full game spread but I will take them on the first half.

PREDICTION: First Half Spread - Phoenix -3.5

SEATTLE STORM AT MINNESOTA LYNX (-5, 147)

These are two teams that know how to shut down the opposition, with the Storm led by Natasha Howard and the Lnyx anchored by three-time Defensive Player of the Year Sylvia Fowles. The Storm hold opponents to the fewest points in the league at 73.2 ppg, while the Lynx allow the second-fewest points at 73.4 ppg. Howard is under investigation by the league after her wife accused her of domestic abuse on Saturday, but as of the moment she's still expected to play tonight.

Both teams rank in the bottom half of the league in scoring with Minnesota averaging 76 ppg (good for eighth in the WNBA) while Seattle averages 75.1 ppg (ninth). The two teams combined for 161 points in their last meeting, but totaled just 133 points just a week before that in Minnesota.

The Under is 6-1-1 in Seattle's last eight games on the road and 8-3 in their previous 11 games overall. The Under has also cashed in each of Minnesota's last four contests. Take the Under again.

            PREDICTION: Under 147

            Saturday’s picks: 2-0
            Season to date: 39-24
