    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Some college football spreads for this fall:

    Nov 2— Oregon (-1) @ USC

    Nov 16— Georgia (-7.5) @ Auburn

    Nov 23— UCLA @USC (-5)

Nov 23— Penn State @ Ohio State (-10.5)

Nov 29— Iowa @ Nebraska (even)

    Nov 30— Alabama (-13) @ Auburn

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

    13) Angels played in Seattle Sunday afternoon, played a makeup game in Wrigley Field on Monday, and host the A’s in Anaheim tonight; that is 3,462 miles in three days, the 3rd-most miles any MLB team has travelled in a 3-day period.

    12) As of Monday afternoon, there were 806 players in the college basketball transfer portal; with 353 D-I hoop teams, that works out to 2.28 players per team.. Thats a lot.

178 of the transfers are grad transfers, who are immediately eligible.

    11) Michigan coach Juwan Howard did a very smart thing Monday and hired former longtime St Joe’s head coach Phil Martelli as an assistant. Guys who are new head coaches need an experienced voice to help them avoid some of the pitfalls of their job.

    10) When you watch and read about the baseball draft, keep in mind that Mike Trout was the 25th pick in the 2009 MLB Draft. Scouting/drafting is an inexact science.

    9) On May 1st, Minnesota Twins were 20-1 to win the World Series; 33 days later, they’re down to 13-2 to win the Series.

    8) Sports betting legislation passed in Illinois this week; meanwhile here in New York, we have crickets……nothing happening. NFL training camps start next month.

    7) Orioles took Oregon State C Adley Rutschman with the first pick of the MLB Draft, the first catcher taken first since Buster Posey in 2001.

Royals took SS Bobby Witt Jr with the #2 pick; his dad Bobby Witt pitched in the major leagues for 16 seasons.

    6) Breakdown of DT Gerald McCoy’s deal with the Carolina Panthers:
    — 1 year, $4M to sign.
    — $3M base salary
    — $500K camp roster bonus.
    — $500K in 45-man per game bonus
    — 6.5 sacks for $500k.
    — 8 sacks gets him $1.5M.
    — $250K for Pro Bowl.
    — $250K for playoffs.
    — $4M guaranteed.

Worth noting that Carolina/Tampa Bay (McCoy’s old team) are division rivals.

    5) Friday, a bettor in Sparks, NV played a $5, 10-team parlay and hit it for $3,605; four of the ten wagers were underdogs. Pretty impressive.

    4) Cubs 6, Angels 1— In his first game as a Cub, Carlos Gonzalez made a great diving catch in top of 7th inning to rob Jonathan Lucroy of a bases loaded double.

    3) Milwaukee Brewers activated Travis Shaw from the IL and demoted rookie 2B Keston Huira, despite Huira hitting five home runs and having an .865 OPS in only 17 games. Milwaukee also DFA’d 1B Jesus Aguilar.

    2) This was the first baseball draft ever where none of the first six picks were pitchers.

    1) Excellent news: Mets broadcaster Ron Darling will be back in the booth tonight for the Mets-Giants game; Darling has been battling thyroid cancer the last few months but has been cleared to return to work. He is a friendly voice in the booth; great to have him back.

      WNBA Betting Recap - 5/24-6/2
      Joe Williams

League Betting Notes (Friday, May 31 through Sunday, June 2)

-- Favorites went 10-7 straight up (SU)
-- Underdogs went 9-8 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams went 12-5 SU
-- Road teams went 12-5 ATS
      -- The 'under' went 12-5

      Team Betting Notes

-- Atlanta (1-2 SU, 0-3 ATS) was punished by Washington (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS) in the nation's capital on Saturday, as the Dream have stumbled out of the chute, especially against the number. It doesn't help that their biggest weapon, Angel McCoughtry, is on the sidelines still recovering after suffering a serious knee injury in August during the playoffs, also against the Mystics.

-- Connecticut (3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS) picked up an impressive road win against Las Vegas (1-2 SU, 1-2 ATS) by an 80-74 score as five-point underdogs on the Strip. The 'under' has also connected in three of their four games, including each of their two road contests so far.

-- After a successful performance in the opener against Los Angeles (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS), the Aces have dropped a pair of games as favorites. The 'under' is 2-0 so far for the Aces on their home court. For the Sparks, they're without Candace Parker (hamstring), who is out indefinitely.

-- Dallas (0-2 SU, 2-0 ATS) hasn't been able to find their way into the win column yet, but they have been scrapping. They covered as a 10 1/2-point underdog in Atlanta in the opener, and they narrowly covered a 3 1/2-point number at most shops in their second game against Minnesota (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS). For the Wings, not only have they been dealing with the trade of Liz Cambage to the Aces in the offseason, but they're trying to make due without Skylar Diggins-Smith, who is slowly working her way back after giving birth to her first child.

-- Speaking of the Lynx, they're perfect on the season despite the fact former MVP Maya Moore has decided to sit out for the 2019 season, focusing on her family and ministry.

-- New York (0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS) has picked up right where they left off last season -- and that's not good. They've failed to win or cover in their two outings. They lost the opener at home to Indiana (2-1 SU, 2-1 ATS) on a last-second tip-in, but then they were hammered by 15 points in Indianapolis in the second end of the home-and-home. The 'over' is 2-0 for New York, while hitting in all three games, and each of the past five dating back to last season, for the Fever.

-- Phoenix (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS) bounced back after their opening game loss in Seattle (2-2 SU, 2-2 ATS) to top the Aces 86-84 as two-point underdogs at home. The Mercury have been without Diana Taurasi (back) so far, and they'll be without her for the foreseeable future.

-- The Storm have been without Breanna Stewart (Achilles') and Sue Bird (knee), and Stewart will be out for the season while Bird is out indefinitely. They're treading water until they can get a little healthier, using defense to win. The 'under' is 3-0-1 so far for the defending champions.

-- Chicago (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS) bounced the Storm on Saturday, topping them as 2 1/2-point favorites as the total pushed. The one thing the Sky have going for them, they do not have one player listed on the injury report, a rarity in the WNBA during the early going.

Los Angeles Sparks at New York Liberty (+6.5)

The Sparks have packed light for their current East Coast road trip, which tips off in New York versus the Liberty early this afternoon. Los Angeles is down to 10 active players on the roster with standouts Alana Beard and Candace Parker out due to injury and Maria Vadeeva playing overseas.

The Liberty are still searching for their first win of the 2019 WNBA season after back-to-back losses to the Indiana Fever. Defense remains an issue for New York, which has allowed scores of 81 and 92 points in its opening games and allowed an average of 90.3 points against through four preseason games.

However, with L.A. missing key bodies and the early 11 a.m. ET start tipping at 8 a.m. PT back home in La-La Land, New York holds solid value as a desperate host team Tuesday.

Minnesota Lynx at Seattle Storm (OTB)

The Lynx and Storm mix it up for the second time this season, with Minnesota earning a 72-61 home win as 4.5-point favorite on May 29. That victory was one of three straight wins to start the season for the Lynx, who bring the WNBA’s best defense to Seattle Tuesday night – allowing only 66.3 points per game to open the schedule and staying below the total in all three contests.

On the other end of the floor, Minnesota is managing despite missing plenty of offensive firepower. The Lynx are playing without stars Maya Moore (personal), Seimone Augustus (knee), and Rebekkah Brunson (concussion), and averaging 77 points through their first three outings.

Seattle has also felt the pain of missing players. The Storm are without veteran guard Sue Bird (knee) and reigning MVP Breanna Stewart (Achilles). That’s left Seattle to score 74.8 points through its first four games and post a 0-3-1 Over/Under mark so far in 2019.
