    Tweet of the Day

“My wife just told me she can’t talk right now because she’s too busy with one of her fantasy football drafts. I’ve never been prouder.”
    ESPN’s Field Yates

    Thursday’s quiz

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……..

    13) Saturday’s Boise State-Florida State game has been moved from Jacksonville to Tallahassee, because of the upcoming tropical storm. Kickoff was moved up to noon ET.

As a result, the line moved from Florida State -5 to 6.5; if you wagered on the game before the site changed, apparently those tickets are now void.

    12) Speaking of noon ET starts, the Pac-12 is actually discussing having some of their teams play HOME games that start at 9am Pacific time, starting next season. Seriously.

Why would a fan want to go to a football game that starts at 9am on a Saturday? Just so teams can be seen on TV across the country earlier in the day? It makes no sense.

    11) This is a tough week; between now and 4:00 Saturday, around 1,200 guys are going to get cut from NFL rosters. 300 or so of them will get re-signed to practice squads, another 300-400 will wind up playing in the XFL in February, but playing on fall Sundays is a player’s dream.

    10) From Phil Rogers: Cleveland Indian starting pitchers have thrown 115+ pitches in 15 games this season, but Trevor Bauer had the first 13 of those— he’s on the Reds now.

No other team has had more than eight such games this year.

    9) Random observation; hitters swing at 3-0 pitches a lot more than they used to.

    8) Baseball stuff:
    — Royals shelved P Brad Keller (innings limit) for the rest of the season.
    — Oakland put DH Khris Davis on the paternity list.

    7) Utah 30, BYU 12— Game was shortened by a lightning storm; wagers on the game will all be refunded, since game didn’t reach the last 5:00.

    6) Cincinnati 24, UCLA 14— Yardage was 417-218 Bearcats; UCLA has a major problem- their QB isn’t very good. Bruins turned the ball over four times, twice in the red zone when their QB simply dropped the ball when he was preparing to pass- thats just not acceptable.

    5) I have been critical of ESPN the last couple years, but the late SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt is excellent television; he gets it. It is worth your time to watch; highlights, sometimes an obscure highlight, gambling-related tidbits, and just good solid sentiment about what life should be like. In short, a lot of thought goes into making this show every night.

    4) Marlins 4, Reds 3 (12)— Aristides Aquino hit his 14th homer this month, the most homers a rookie has ever hit in one month. He hit .241 in AA last year. Go figure.

    3) I’m probably late with this, but apparently there are places now where you can go and throw axes at targets, kind of like darts except you’re throwing freakin’ axes. Competitive axe throwing is a thing, and this is news to me. Do they serve alcohol at those places?

    2) Glad to see that DirecTV has the local ABC affiliate back up and running in time for the college football season. Their business would take a hit if they’re blacking out stations that show football. Getting the Pac-12 Network would also be a help.

    1) SouthPoint Casino posted a prop for Saturday’s college football; which team will score the first touchdown in the noon ET kickoffs?
    Nebraska +$275
    Ohio State 7-2
    Ole Miss 4-1
    Mississippi State 9-2
    Memphis 7-1
    Illinois 13-1
    Indiana 14-1

                • Saturday’s 6-pack

                  — Nevada 34, Purdue 31— Wolf Pack rallied back from down 31-14, drilled a 56-yard FG at the gun for a dramatic win.

                  — Wake Forest 38, Utah State 35— Both teams threw for 400+ yards.

                  — Nationals 7, Marlins 6— Rendon’s single sent the locals home happy.

                  — Mets 11, Phillies 5— Wilson Ramos is 11-16 with the bases loaded.

                  — Dodgers put 2B Max Muncy (broken wrist) on the IL.

                  — RIP actress Valerie Harper 80, who played Rhoda on the Mary Tyler Moore Show

Saturday’s List of 13: Our first look at college basketball for this season

I don’t go grocery shopping much, because I never cook, but while getting some junk food Friday, guess what was there? The Athlon college basketball magazine for 2019-20, already on newsstands on August 30. Here is what I learned from scanning this fine magazine:

                  13) Top 4 coaching hires:
                  — Fred Hoiberg, Nebraska— His grandfather was once Nebraska’s head coach. He might be the only person in America who would turn down the UCLA basketball job for this.
                  — Eric Musselman, Arkansas— My first instinct was that this is a bad fit, but he was great at Nevada and he coached two NBA teams.
                  — Buzz Williams, Texas A&M— He got Virginia Tech to the NCAA’s the last three years; they had been there twice in the previous 30 years. Va Tech is a football school, too.
                  — Nate Oats, Alabama— Went 31-5 in MAC last two years; his job is to entertain the locals until spring football starts.

                  12) UCLA butchered its coaching search; they wound up with Mick Cronin, who is a solid coach but Bruin fans are going to hate his defense-first style (or lack of style).

Last six years, Cronin’s Cincinnati teams’ national rank in tempo (out of 351 or 353 teams):
                  328-339-333-330-330-338

From 2006-08, Ben Howland made the Final Four three years in a row; from that point on, AFTER he made the Final Four three years in a row, UCLA went 58-32 in Pac-12 games, but only 2-3 in NCAA tourney games- they told Howland to take a hike. Why?!?!?!?!?

Cincinnati made the NCAA’s the last nine years, but since 2013, they’re 3-4 in 1st round, 0-3 in the 2nd round, and never made an Elite 8 under Cronin. Uh-oh.

                  11) There are 354 Division I teams this year; Merrimack joins the NEC this year, after Cal Baptist joined the WAC and North Alabama joined the Atlantic Sun.

                  10) Keep in mind that the 3-point line has been moved back 16.75 inches, to the international distance of 22 feet, 1.75 inches. The NBA arc is 23 feet, 9 inches.

They used the longer international arc in the NIT last spring; teams shot 2.2% lower behind the arc than they did in the regular season.

                  9) Five coaches on the hot seat:
                  — Dave Leitao, DePaul— LY’s 19-17 mark was their best in 12 years, but then the NCAA came calling. Last 4 years, Blue Demons are 16-56 in Big East games, and they’re cheating. Oy.
                  — Danny Manning, Wake Forest- Deacons are 24-66 in ACC games under his watch.
                  — Matt McCall, UMass— When you finish 13th two years in a row in a league called the Atlantic 10 (they have 14 teams), your job is going to be in jeopardy.
                  — Shaka Smart, Texas— His Longhorn teams are 31-41 in Big X games, and they don’t play the same fast-paced style his great VCU teams played. Why?
                  — Patrick Chambers, Penn State— 8 years, 0 NCAA bids; last year, 8 of 14 Big 14 teams made the NCAA’s. PSU is a football school, but Chambers still needs to show progress.

                  8) Gonzaga is the only team in the country that has made the Sweet 16 the last five years.

                  7) Athlon Sports top 6 teams for this season:
                  6— Memphis Tigers
                  5— Florida Gators
                  4— Louisville Cardinals
                  3— Kentucky Wildcats
                  2— Duke Blue Devils
                  1— Michigan State Spartans

                  6) Brad Brownell has been Clemson’s coach for nine years; in four of those years, Clemson finished .500+ in ACC games but didn’t make the NCAA’s. They need to win more games in December, but they were in the Sweet 16 two years ago. Brownell is a good coach whose job is a tough one- they lost five of their top six scorers from last year’s 20-14 team.

                  5) Five most impactful freshmen this year:
5— Nico Mannion, Arizona- Scoring PG whose dad played in the NBA.
4— Anthony Edwards, Georgia- 5-star recruit from talent-rich Atlanta.
3— James Wiseman, Memphis- 7-1 center who needs work on offense.
2— Isaiah Stewart, Washington- Young man from Rochester, NY is long way from home.
1— Cole Anthony, North Carolina- His dad Greg was UNLV’s PG in the Tark glory days.

                  4) Some programs win no matter who the coach is.. Check out VCU’s record:
                  1999-2002— Mack McCarthy, 65-55, 35-32 in CAA
                  2002-06— Jeff Capel, 79-41, 50-22 in CAA
                  2006-09— Anthony Grant, 76-25, 45-9 in CAA
                  2009-15— Shaka Smart, 163-56, 38-16 in CAA, 36-14 in A-14
                  2015-17— Will Wade, 51-20, 28-8 in A-14
                  2017-19— Mike Rhoades, 43-23, 25-11 in A-14

                  3) Five of this year’s better transfers:
                  — Omer Yurtseven, NC State to Georgetown- Scored 13.5 ppg for the Wolfpack.
                  — Quade Green, Kentucky to Washington- Will be Huskies’ PG after the 1st semester.
                  — Malachi Flynn, Washington St to San Diego St— Scored 15.8 ppg for the Coogs.
                  — Koby McEwen, Utah State to Marquette— Bolted Logan after they fired the coach.
                  — Jalen Harris, Louisiana Tech to Nevada— Wolf Pack literally wouldn’t have been able to field a team the day they hired Steve Alford. Harris scored 15.3 ppg his last year at Tech.

                  2) Under Chris Beard, Texas Tech is 8-2 in NCAA tourney games; before Beard became Tech’s coach, Tech was 8-16 all-time in NCAA tourney games.

                  1) Georgetown played the fastest tempo games of any Big East team last year, playing the 25th-fastest tempo in the whole country. I wonder what John Thompson thinks of that?

Patrick Ewing has changed the Hoyas’ program into one that plays fast, which helps recruiting— Hoyas are 34-29 under Ewing, 14-22 in Big East games, but they were 19-14, 9-9 LY. They’ll be an interesting team to watch this winter.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Elena Delle Donne scored 29 points, Emma Meesseman added 19 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four blocks, and the Washington Mystics beat the Dallas Wings 91-85 on Saturday night.

Washington set a franchise record winning its 23rd game of the season and remained in first place in the standings.

Natasha Cloud and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored 13 points apiece and LaToya Sanders added 12 points and a season-high 11 rebounds for the Mystics (23-8). Washington has won three games in a row and 14 of its last 16.

Delle Donne and Meesseman hit back-to-back 3-pointers to spark an 11-0 run that gave Washington nine-point lead when Meesseman's three-point play capped the spurt with 5:39 left in the first quarter. The Wings scored 13 of the next 18 points to cut their deficit to 23-21 about 2 1/2 minutes later but Delle Donne answered with a 3-point play and Dallas got no closer.

Arike Ogunbowale scored 30 points, Glory Johnson tied her season high with 20 points and Allisha Gray added 14 for Dallas (10-21). Ogunbowale, who scored 35 in a win over Chicago on Thursday, extended her WNBA rookie record to eight consecutive games with at least 20 points.

The Mystics used a 9-0 run to make it 80-57 - their biggest lead of the game - late in the third quarter. Dallas scored 24 of the next 30 points to pull within six with 90 seconds left.

                              NFL doings:

                              — Buffalo released veteran RB LeSean McCoy, who then signed with KC.

                              — Titans traded WR Taywan Taylor to Cleveland for a draft pick.

                              — Giants cut QB Kyle Lauletta, a 4th-round draft pick last year.

                              — Patriots cut backup QB Brian Hoyer.

                              — Chargers cut backup QB Cardale Jones.

                              — Vikings traded a 5th-round draft pick for P/K Kaare Vedvik three weeks ago; they cut him Saturday.

Armadillo:Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

                              13) Boise State 36, Florida State 31:
                              — Seminoles led this game 31-13 with 3:00 left in first half; they didn’t score again.
                              — Plays from scrimmage: Boise 108, FSU 62. Boise had 38 first downs.
                              — Broncos have a good freshman QB in Hank Bachmeier (30-51/407 yards)
                              — Third down conversions: Boise 10-19, FSU 1-12

                              12) USC 31, Fresno State 23:
                              — USC’s QB JT Daniels got hurt; he was replaced by freshman Kedon Slodis, whose QB coach in high school was NFL Hall of Famer Kurt Warner.
                              — How was Jeff Tedford fired by Cal? Fresno has only 3 starters back on offense but they went toe-to-toe with USC here. Tedford is an excellent coach (Aaron Rodgers’ college coach).
                              — Fresno had the ball in the red zone in the last 2:00, but threw an end zone pick.
                              — Clay Helton went for it on 4th-and-1 near midfield with 2:20 left up 8 points; he didn’t make but was bailed out by his defense.

                              11) North Carolina 24, South Carolina 20— Mack Brown’s return to the sidelines was a success, though not before a mind-numbing mistake when they took a knee instead of punting in the last 0:20, giving the Gamecocks the ball on the UNC 47.

Tar Heels trailed this game 20-9 after the third quarter, but rallied with 98-95 yard TD drives for the win. Brown was out of coaching for five years; I enjoyed his TV work, but he seems happier to be back coaching.

                              10) Auburn 27, Oregon 21:
                              — Auburn started a freshman QB in its opener for first time since 1946.
                              — Ducks led 14-6 at half, 21-13 after third quarter, but were scoreless in 4th quarter.
                              — Auburn outrushed Oregon 206-90.

                              9) Houston Texans were very busy Saturday:
                              — Houston acquired LT Laremy Tunsil, WR Kenny Stills from Miami for two 1st round picks and a 2nd round pick.
                              — Texans traded DE Jadeveon Clowney to Seattle, dumping his $16M salary.
                              — Houston also acquired RB Carlos Hyde from the Chiefs, and DB Keion Crosson from New England in separate deals.

Houston’s Bill O’Brien is getting ripped on social media for these moves, but we’ll see how this all works out. Texans gave up 66 sacks LY, the most for a playoff team since 1999, so acquiring Tunsil seems like a good idea, even if they overpaid some.

Dolphins, on the other hand, seem to have given up on this season before Labor Day; giving away your LT and your best WR is similar to what the Raiders did LY when they traded Kahlil Mack to Chicago and Amari Cooper to Dallas for draft picks.

                              8) Best wishes to New Mexico coach Bob Davie, who was hospitalized after the Lobos’ 39-31 win over Sam Houston State with chest pains. No word on how serious it is.

                              7) Nebraska 35, South Alabama 21— Cornhuskers scored two TD’s in the third quarter before they ran an offensive play; a pick-6 and a punt return TD. Nebraska ran ball for only 98 yards, which is alarming.

Someone at Caesars Palace wagered $2,000 on Nebraska’s money line; he had to sweat a decent amount before he collected his $12.50 winnings. Not even enough to buy a decent lunch.

                              6) I-A teams that lost to I-AA opponents:
                              — Central Arkansas 35, Western Kentucky 28 (WKU led 28-14 after 3rd quarter)

                              Close calls/red flags:
                              — Iowa State 29, Northern Iowa 26 OT
                              — Kansas 24, Indiana State 17
                              — UConn 24, Wagner 21
                              — Minnesota 28, South Dakota State 21
                              — UAB 24, Alabama State 19
                              — Arkansas 20, Portland State 13
                              — UTEP 36, Houston Baptist 34
                              — Old Dominion 24, Norfolk State 21
                              — West Virginia 20, James Madison 13
                              — San Diego State 6, Weber State 0

                              5) Michigan State 28, Tulsa 7— Total yardage in this game was 303-80, MSU.

In college football, sacks count as rushing yardage; in this game, Tulsa had 25 rushes for minus-73 yards; they were 16-27/153 passing. Spartans’ defense scored nine points, as Tulsa botched two shotgun snaps that padded the ridiculously bad rushing numbers.

                              4) Upsets:
                              — Georgia State (+26.5) 38, Tennessee 30— Panthers were 2-10 LY, 1-7 in Sun Belt. Tennessee has its fourth offensive coordinator in four years. Learning takes time.
                              — Wyoming (+18) 37, Missouri 31
                              — Nevada (+11) 34, Purdue 31— Kid that made the game-winning 56-yard FG was put on scholarship after the game, meaning he actually got paid for making that kick.
                              — North Carolina (+10) 24, South Carolina 20
                              — Boston College (+4.5) 35, Virginia Tech 28

                              3) Wake Forest 38, Utah State 35— Both teams passed for 400+ yards; Wake converted 13-24 third down plays. State had 8 penalties for 84 yards; Deacons one for 15 yards.

                              2) Memphis 15, Ole Miss 10— Yardage was 364-173 Memphis; they led 13-0 at halftime, then held on for dear life.

                              1) A big problem with the epidemic of quarterback transfers is that it leaves more teams very thin under center. A starter gets hurt or struggles, and it is a disaster.

UCLA’s quarterback is obviously struggling, but the Bruins don’t have anyone with experience to step in for him— they’ve got all young backup QB’s, two freshmen and a sophomore.

Chip Kelly has some work to do; the kid was 8-26 passing and lost two fumbles in the red zone, not exactly a stellar performance in a 24-14 loss.
