  • WNBA Betting Recap - 7/16-7/22
    Joe Williams

League Betting Notes (Tuesday, July 16 through Monday, July 22)

-- Favorites went 9-3 straight up (SU)
-- Underdogs went 8-4 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams went 9-3 SU
    -- Home/road teams went 6-6 ATS
    -- The 'under' went 7-5

    Season Totals To Date

-- Favorites are 65-47 straight up (SU)
-- Underdogs 66-43-3 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams are 66-46 SU
-- Road teams are 57-52-3 ATS
    -- The 'under' is 66-46

    Team Betting Notes

-- Atlanta (5-14 SU, 8-11 ATS) is back to getting pounded again after putting up a fight for a two-week span. The Dream went 3-3 SU in a six-game stretch from July 5-17, losing one game in overtime, one game by one point and another game by two points. They finally looked to be jelling after a tough start and adjustment period without F Angel McCoughtry (knee). However, they lost 98-69 at Connecticut (12-6 SU, 9-9 ATS) and 93-65 in Washington (11-6 SU, 9-8 ATS).

-- As far as the Sun is concerned, they're clinging to first place by a half-game over the Mystics heading into the new week. After a five-game skid, the Sun have rattled off three victories and covers to get back on track. The 'under' is 5-2 across their past seven games.

-- The Mystics have managed 85.9 points per game (PPG), a 45.0 field-goal percentage and 85.9 free-throw percentage, all of which lead the WNBA. Like the Sun, the Mystics have registered a pair of wins to get back on track after a three-game skid from July 7-13. The over is 4-1 across the past five outings, too.

-- Chicago (11-8 SU, 11-7-1 ATS) has worked their way to near the top of the standings in the Eastern Conference with four straight wins and a 3-1 ATS mark during the span.

-- Dallas (5-14 SU, 10-9 ATS) continues to struggle on the offensive end, registering just 69.8 PPG to rank dead-last in the WNBA, and they're 11th in field-goal percentage and 3-point percentage. The Wings have dropped five in a row since their surprising 12-point win over Los Angeles (10-8 SU, 8-9-1 ATS) back on July 9. The Wings are 0-9 SU and 4-5 ATS on the road this season, too.

-- Speaking of the Sparks, they had their three-game win streak snapped at New York (8-10 SU, 8-9-1 ATS). Despite the loss to the Liberty, the Sparks are 6-2 SU and 5-3 ATS across the past eight to rebound after a slow start.

-- The Liberty have won and covered just once in the past four outings, the win over the Sparks. After losing to L.A. at home back on June 4, the Liberty have won and covered each of the past two outings against the Sparks with the 'over' hitting in each.

-- Indiana (6-14 SU, 10-10 ATS) have dropped five in a row since beating Dallas on July 5, and they're 1-3 ATS across the past four. The Fever have lost eight in a row at home since also beating the Wings on June 7, and they're 2-6 ATS during the awful span in Indy.

-- Las Vegas (12-6 SU, 6-12 ATS) rebounded on Sunday after a three-point loss in Seattle (12-8 SU, 11-8-1 ATS) on Friday. The Aces are now and impressive 10-3 SU across the past 13 after a slow start, but they're still having trouble against the number, going 3-9 ATS over the past 12. Vegas hasn't covered in back-to-back outings all season. Total bettors are liking the Aces, too, as the under is 4-1 over the past five.

-- Lastly, the Storm have won and covered four in a row, as they're finally looking like a championship caliber team after being struck in neutral for most of the first half.

        • Las Vegas tops Seattle for 6th straight home win
          July 24, 2019
          By The Associated Press

LAS VEGAS (AP) Dearica Hamby scored 24 points to lead five Las Vegas starters in double figures and the Aces beat the Seattle Storm 79-62 on Tuesday night for their sixth straight home win.

Las Vegas had its lead trimmed to 57-51 early in the fourth quarter until going on a 17-5 run - with 3-pointers by Hamby, Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young. The Aces finished 9 of 20 from long distance.

Liz Cambage had 15 points, 12 rebounds and six assists for Las Vegas (13-6). Young added 13 points, Plum had 12 and Kayla McBride 11. Aces star A'ja Wilson, averaging 15.4 points, did not play after suffering an ankle injury last week in a 69-66 loss to Seattle.

Las Vegas shot just 35% from the field in the first half, but led 36-35.

Natasha Howard and Alysha Clark each scored 13 points for Seattle (12-9), which had its four-game winning streak snapped.

          MERCURY 95, FEVER 77

PHOENIX (AP) - Brittney Griner and DeWanna Bonner each scored 22 points and Phoenix handed Indiana its sixth straight loss.

Phoenix missed its first six shots of the game, but Bonner took over with 12 first-quarter points. Camille Little sparked the third quarter with nine points after Indiana scored the first six points of the half, and the Mercury sealed it by making 17 of 17 free throws.

Leilani Mitchell added 14 points for Phoenix (10-8), which had 28 assists on 33 field goals. The Mercury made 53% of their shots, including 12 of 21 from 3-point range.

Bonner and Griner combined to score 23 of Phoenix's 44 first-half points.

Erica Wheeler scored 18 points, Tiffany Mitchell had 15 and Teaira McCowan added 14 for Indiana (6-15).

          SPARKS 78, DREAM 66

ATLANTA (AP) - Nneka Ogwumike had 24 points, nine rebounds and five assists, Tierra Ruffin-Pratt made six of Los Angeles' nine 3-pointers, and the Sparks closed on a 15-1 run to beat Atlanta.

Atlanta was just one for its first 17 from 3-point range until Tiffany Hayes sank one from the corner for a 65-63 lead with 3:14 to go. But Chelsea Gray answered at the other end with a 3-pointer and the Dream didn't score in the final 1:50.

Ruffin-Pratt finished with 23 points for Los Angeles (11-8). Chiney Ogwumike had 15 points and 12 rebounds and Gray added 10 points with six assists.

Monique Billings scored a career-high 16 points for Atlanta (5-15), which has lost five straight games. Hayes returned after missing two games with a hamstring injury and scored 15 points.

Portland Trail Blazers guard Kent Bazemore, who spent five seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, sat courtside.

              Quote of the Day
“I have a unique view because I was a transfer myself. A lot of people say: Why did you transfer? I signed with Middle Tennessee. I played there for two years, was a starter. And I left [for Alabama], not because I was unhappy, just because I wanted to go fulfill a dream. These guys have tough decisions in making decisions where they are going to go to college, and sometimes they may not get it right.

And to me it’s about the mental wellness of the student-athlete. And I think everybody that’s involved is definitely sensitive and really considers that, and I think that’s one of the things that we have to put to the forefront when it comes to kids that want to transfer. We need to help them find their way.”
              Tennessee football coach Jeremy Pruitt

              Wednesday’s quiz
What was the last team to win a playoff game against the Patriots in Foxboro?

              Tuesday’s quiz
Mercury is the planet that is closest to the sun.

              Monday’s quiz
Tommy Bowden was the football coach at Clemson before Dabo Swinney.

              Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

              13) Few weeks ago, I posted something on here about a couple of brothers who are financial analysts in this area, and very successful ones. I went to college with one of them; good guys.

If you’re inclined towards prayer, please say one for the Fagan family; Chris was diagnosed with ALS and is fighting that hideous disease now.

His daughter Kate wrote a beautiful article about him recently.

              12) The next 7-8 days figure to have lot of baseball trades, which will be followed by lot of trade analysis, but until the trades happen, we’re stuck with lot of trade speculation, which is analysis of stuff that hasn’t or may not happen. In other words, a waste of time.

“We won’t all run out of money, but we’ll all run out of time.”

One of the biggest things about the Interweb is that there is so much stuff out there- time management is important, so you can learn as much as possible, without cluttering your brain. Nothing clutters my brain like speculation about that stuff that may/may not happen.

              11) When Robert Kennedy was assassinated in 1968, the person who took his place as a US Senator from New York was Charles Goodell (Roger Goodell’s father).

Someone posted an article on Twitter over the weekend about how after the first man walked on the moon in 1969, Charles Goodell criticized the space program for not being worth the money that was spent on it. Controversial opinion for sure, but have to give the guy credit for having the onions to say what he thought. Politicians don’t do that anymore; they cover their own butt.

              10) LSU spent $28M to re-do its football locker room; each player has a chair that folds out into a bed, complete with an iPad holder to watch film, charging ports and storage below the seat/bed. Pretty nice locker room.

              9) How do new NFL head coaches do in Week 1 of their first year?

Last year, the seven new head coaches went 0-7, after new coaches had gone 17-10 from 2014-17 in their season openers.

There are eight new head coaches this season; we’ll see how they do.

              8) San Antonio Spurs hired their former star player Tim Duncan as an assistant coach, which will be interesting. Duncan has never coached before.

              7) Mark Sanchez retired from the NFL and will join ESPN’s college football studio show; he’ll replace Mack Brown, who went back into coaching this season at North Carolina.

              Sanchez’ career:
              — 37-36 regular season record, 4-2 in playoffs.
              — All six of his playoff games were on the road.
              — Over $74M earned in salary.

              6) By way of comparison, other QB’s playoff records:
              — Derek Carr 0-0 (got hurt the year Oakland was really good)
              — Kirk Cousins 0-1
              — Andy Dalton 0-4
              — Tony Romo 2-4
              — Matt Ryan 4-6
              — Matthew Stafford: 0-3

              5) ESPN compared the history of USC and Alabama’s programs Tuesday, as far as alumni go; the best QB in USC history is Carson Palmer?

I know in their heyday the Trojans ran the ball down people’s throats, but Alabama has Stabler, Starr, Namath, all of whom were better than Palmer.

Other USC QB’s who played in the NFL; Sanchez, Pat Haden, Rodney Peete, Matt Cassel, Vince Evans, Todd Marinovich, Bill Nelsen.

              4) Washington Redskins RB Adrian Peterson has made about $100M in salary, and millions more in endorsements during his NFL career, but he’s deep in debt after his lawyer says he trusted people who ripped him off.

College athletes should be required to take money management courses while they’re in school; hell, maybe all of us should’ve done that, but for a guy who has made $100M+ to be deeply in debt is both sad and ridiculous.

              3) Baseball stuff:
              — Rays put 3B Yandy Diaz (bruised foot) on the IL.
              — Mariners put 2B Dee Gordon (quad) on the IL.

              2) Cincinnati Reds have hit 30 first-inning home runs, most in the majors.

              1) NCAA put DePaul’s basketball program on three years’ probation Tuesday and suspended Blue Demons coach Dave Leitao for three games.

Over the last 12 years, DePaul is 38-180 in Big East games; 38 and freakin’ 180!!!! If they’re cheating while going 38-180, what are the teams that are winning doing?

                    July 24, 2019

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Kristi Toliver scored 20 of her season-high 32 points in the first half, Elena Delle Donne reached 3,500 career points and the Washington Mystics beat the Minnesota Lynx 79-71 on Wednesday.

Toliver scored 14 points in the first quarter by making her first six shots and topped her previous season high of 19 in the first half to help Washington build a 44-32 lead. Delle Donne became the second-fastest player in league history to reach the career mark behind Diana Taurasi.

Delle Donne, wearing a protective mask after fracturing her nose earlier this month, finished with 11 points as Washington (12-6) won for the third straight time.

Lexie Brown scored 19 points and Sylvia Fowles had 18 points and 12 rebounds for Minnesota (10-10), which has lost three in a row.

Minnesota trailed by as many as 20 points in the second half but Brown banked in her fifth 3-pointer just before the third-quarter buzzer to cap an 8-0 run, getting the Lynx within 65-53. The lead remained in double figures until the 2:34 mark.

                        10) Least profitable NFL head coaches in preseason games:
                        — Mike Vrabel, Titans 0-4 ATS
                        — Dan Quinn, Falcons 4-12
                        — Jason Garrett, Cowboys 11-20-2
                        — Bill Belichick, Patriots 25-31-1

                        9) There are 43 NBA players who will earn $2M+ during the 2019-20 season.

                        8) Joe Flacco won’t be playing QB for Denver Thursday in the Hall of Fame Game; Kevin Hogan will start, followed by rookie Drew Lock and then Brett Rypien.

                        7) Josh Johnson turned down a chance to go to Ravens’ camp as a backup QB; he figures Robert Griffin III will be healthy shortly after the regular season begins, which would mean Johnson getting cut at that point.

32-year old Johnson has had shots with 12 different NFL teams, going 1-7 as a starter— he’s played in 33 NFL games, starting three for the Redskins LY.

                        6) Baseball stuff:

                        5) College basketball transfer portal:
                        — Utah F Donnie Tillman transfers from Utah to UNLV, is immediately eligible.

                        4) Last major league to score 10+ runs in an inning and still lose the game; Royals against Cleveland in August, 2006.

                        3) Former Clemson RB Tavien Feaster is transferring to South Carolina, where he’ll be eligible right away; he has 1,330 career rushing yards and 15 TD’s..

                        2) Former Southern Miss/Tennessee coach Donnie Tyndall is the new head coach of the Grand Rapids Drive in the G-League.

                        1) I’d advise against wagering on preseason football, but if you must, six of last seven Hall of Fame games stayed under the total.

                              • Jones leads Sun past Sky 100-94 for 5th straight win
                                July 30, 2019
                                By The Associated Press

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) Jonquel Jones had 27 points and 11 rebounds for her 10th double-double this season, and the Connecticut Sun held off the Chicago Sky 100-94 on Tuesday night for their fifth straight win.

Connecticut had a 21-point lead in the second half until Chicago got as close as 94-90 on Courtney Vandersloot's 3-pointer with 1:18 left. Jones grabbed an offensive rebound on the Sun's next possession, was fouled and hit two free throws. She added two more foul shots as Connecticut made six straight in the final minute.

Jasmine Thomas added 18 points, and Alyssa Thomas and Courtney Williams each scored 12 for Connecticut (14-6), which reached the century mark for the first time this season.

Allie Quigley led Chicago (11-9) with 24 points and four 3-pointers. Vandersloot had 22 points and 11 assists.

                                MYSTICS 99, MERCURY 93

WASHINGTON (AP) - Elena Delle Donne scored 15 of her season-high 33 points in the third quarter, and leading the Mystics to the victory.

Washington led by as many as 23 points, but Phoenix closed to 95-93 on Leilani Mitchell's eighth 3-pointer with 1:21 remaining. Kristi Toliver answered with a 3 at the other end and Natasha Cloud made a foul shot with 20.5 seconds remaining to help close it out.

Toliver had 25 points for Washington (13-6), and Cloud finished with 12.

The Mercury wasted a terrific performance by Mitchell, who was 8 of 12 from long range to tie a WNBA single-game record for made 3-pointers. She finished with a career-high 28 points.

Phoenix (10-9) had won three in a row. Brittney Griner had 30 points, nine rebounds and five assists, and DeWanna Bonner scored 25 points.

                                Aces-Mystics to finish earthquake game
                                July 29, 2019
                                By The Associated Press

LAS VEGAS (AP) The Las Vegas Aces and Washington Mystics' game that was suspended by an earthquake earlier this month will be finished on Aug. 5, the WNBA announced Monday.

The teams will play at T-Mobile Arena instead of the Aces' normal home at Mandalay Bay because that venue isn't available.

The original game was on July 5, with Washington leading 51-36 when a magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit Southern California just before halftime, with the effects felt as far away as Las Vegas and Mexico. After talking it over, WNBA officials suspended the game out of an abundance of caution. NBA Summer League games in Las Vegas also were postponed that night.

Washington will get the ball to start the third quarter.

''It's a 20-minute game and we need to play it like it's 0-0. I think that's the approach we should take,'' Mystics coach Mike Thibault said in a phone interview.

Aces coach Bill Laimbeer said he would treat it as a normal game, although his team will have more urgency, given it is down 15 points.

''We may do a few things a little differently,'' he said.

Both coaches said they expect the teams to get a normal pregame warmup. Thibault wasn't sure if the Mystics would have shootaround because they are playing in Phoenix the day before.

''We'll have our normal game-day routine, watch film and video,'' he said. ''We'll do all the same things we do on game day.''

Las Vegas will most likely be missing A'ja Wilson, who has been sidelined with a left ankle sprain. Washington is expected to have Emma Meesseman, who missed the original game because she was playing for Belgium in the EuroBasket Tournament.

''It's very nice to have Emma, given the number of games we didn't have her for,'' Thibault said.

Washington wasn't scheduled to play in Las Vegas the rest of the season, making it difficult to find a completion date.

One thing that is unclear is whether the officials will be the same as they were for the original game. They may already be booked in other places at that time and the league doesn't say who is officiating until the day of the game.

Laimbeer also wasn't sure what the crowd would be like for the game. Fans who had a ticket to the original game will automatically receive a ticket to the rescheduled one.

July 5 was the first time a WNBA game was suspended mid-game. The NBA's G League had a game suspended this past season when a leak in the roof in Erie, Pennsylvania, stopped play early in the fourth quarter of the BayHawks' game against the Long Island Nets. The teams finished that before a regularly scheduled game between the teams at Nassau Coliseum a month later.
