      • PHOENIX MERCURY AT CONNECTICUT SUN (-5.5, 153.5)

The Mercury sent a message through the WNBA with their one-sided road win over the Washington Mystics Wednesday. Phoenix blasted the league’s top team by 23 points, picking up its second straight win and improving to 5-1 SU and 4-2 ATS in its last six outings.

The Mercury could welcome back hoops legend Diana Taurasi Friday after sitting out the start of the schedule while recovering from back surgery. Taurasi won’t log a ton of minutes in her debut, which is too bad for a Phoenix team playing its fourth game in eight days.

The Mercury don’t have much firepower behind All-Star forward Brittney Griner and DeWanna Bonner (who make up for almost 52 percent of the team’s total offense) and rank dead last in points off the bench, with just 14.4 per game.

The Sun are heading in an opposite direction, losing five in a row heading into Friday. However, four of those five losses came on the road. Connecticut has been terrible from the field during this skid, shooting only 40.6 percent and 35 percent from 3-point range, but did knock down 8 of 20 from beyond the arc in the loss at Atlanta Wednesday.

The Sun return home, where they average 83 points per game, against a tired Mercury team ripe for a letdown and inflated with the return of a limited Taurasi.

        PREDICTION: Connecticut -5.5

DALLAS WINGS AT SEATTLE STORM (-5.5, 148)

The Seattle Storm have had their share of bad luck in the first half of the 2019 WNBA season. The team, which started the schedule without stars Sue Bird and Brianna Stewart for the entire year, have seen key role players go down with injuries over the past two months.

While Seattle was frantically treading water throughout this period, the Storm hit their breaking point the past two weeks. They’ve dropped three in row – all at home – heading into Friday’s home stand with the Dallas Wings.

Seattle has been a mess on both ends of the floor, shooting just 40 percent from the field while allowing opponents to connect on almost 44 percent of their takes and average 76.7 points against over those three games. That’s a drastic change from their home defense before that span, in which the Storm gave up only 68.8 points per game through their first five contests inside Alaska Airlines Arena.

Granted, those three recent losses all came in a stretch of six days and with the roster down to nine healthy players. Seattle is expected to return guard Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis Friday after she missed the previous game - a loss to Atlanta on July 5 - and the status of standout guard Jewel Loyd is up in the air.

“We’ve been playing nonstop since the season started,” forward Natasha Howard told the Seattle Times earlier this week. “We all need time to recuperate and recharge.”

Dallas has improved since its slow start to the season but has struggled away from home. The Wings are winless on the road with a 2-4 ATS mark as visitors. The team averages only 66.7 points on 35 percent shooting in opposing gyms and have their own laundry list of injuries growing, heading into Friday.

        PREDICTION: Seattle -5.5

        Wednesday’s picks: 0-2
        Season to date: 34-24

          Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

          13) Of the 24 guys who played in the 2017 NBA All-Star Game, only seven are still on the same team now that they were back then, only 2.5 years ago.

          12) If you follow the NFL, play fantasy football or wager on games, I highly recommend Warren Sharp’s 2019 Football Handbook, which you can get on Amazon. Tremendous amount of good NFL knowledge.

If you watched the 4-part series Showtime did on sports gambling last winter, Sharp is the brains behind the football wagering of pro gambler Bill Krackomberger, who was featured in the series. If you’re betting $3,000 a game, you better have some serious knowledge on your side, and Sharp possesses that knowledge.

          11) Starting August 1st, Aria, Vdara and Bellagio are increasing their resort fees from $39 a day to $45 a day, as MGM increases all their resort fees.

Resort fees are an artificial way of ripping off tourists; it’d be less offensive if they just added $45 a day to the damn room rates.

Those three hotels are expensive enough; people like myself are going to stop heading west for vacations if the airlines and hotels keep jacking up their rates.

          10) Baseball at the All-Star break:
Most profitable team to bet: Rangers +$1,408
Least profitable team to bet: Royals -$1,915
          Most profitable starter: Cashner +$1,050
          Least profitable starter: Sale -$947

          Favorites: 798-545 (+220)
          Overs: 655-622-65 (+777)

          9) Interesting article on the Interweb this week about how NBA trainers believe that kids who play basketball year-round, with no breaks, are more likely to break down physically as they get older. Parents are more and more having their kids specialize in one sport at an earlier age; there are varied opinions on whether this is a good idea.

Guys who were trainers 20-30 years ago were saying how players back then would take a few weeks off after the season to re-charge, and also do non-basketball conditioning stuff during the summer, rather than just be in the gym every day.

          8) Alex Bregman needed four stitches to close a cut on his chin after he took a bad-hop single to the face in Thursday night’s loss to the Rangers.

          7) Oklahoma City Thunder traded Russell Westbrook to Houston for Chris Paul late Thursday; Rockets also sent two protected 1st-round picks (’24 and ’26, both protected Nos. 1-4) and two pick swaps (’21 and ’25) to the Thunder, who should probably host the draft for the next several years.

Oklahoma City is already working on trading Paul, undoubtedly for more draft picks. For the record, Paul (34) is four years older than Westbrook.

Bad news for the State Farm Insurance people, who now have to shoot a whole new set of commercials with Paul off the Rockets.

          6) Clemson’s basketball team went overseas and won the gold medal at the World University Games, an excellent experience for Brad Brownell’s Tigers.

          5) First-round matchups in November’s Battle for Atlantis basketball tournament:
          Michigan/Iowa State
          North Carolina/Alabama
          Gonzaga/Southern Miss
          Seton Hall/Oregon

          4) First-round matchups for November’s Myrtle Beach Invitational:
          Villanova/Middle Tennessee
          Mississippi State/Tulane
          Utah/Coastal Carolina
          Baylor/Ohio

          3) First-round matchups for November’s Wooden Legacy:
          Arizona/Pepperdine
          UCF/Penn
          Wake Forest/Charleston
          Providence/Long Beach State

          2) First-round matchups for November’s Charleston Classic: Florida/St. Joe’s
          Miami/Missouri State
          UConn/Buffalo
          Xavier/Towson

          1) So far this season, 60.5% of the runs Justin Verlander has allowed came via home runs; if that holds up for the season, it’ll be the highest percentage in major league history. Last week, Verlander went off loudly on this year’s baseballs being juiced. He should know.

Verlander has earned $226,515,000 in his career, with $66M more coming in 2020-21; he is also married to Kate Upton, so it is possible he has forfeited the right to complain about anything, even juiced-up baseballs, for a very long time.

Sunday’s List of 13: Random thoughts on a summer day…….

                  13) Angels threw a combined no-hitter Friday night, in their first home game since Tyler Skaggs’ tragic death. Taylor Cole and Felix Pena combined on the no-hitter; Cole was the opener- he threw the first two innings. Pena threw 81 pitches in closing out the 13-0 win.

Skaggs’ mother threw out the first pitch on a very sad, emotional night in Anaheim.

                  12) In his first two seasons in the NBA, Ben Simmons played 34 mpg in 160 games; he is one of the best passers I’ve ever seen, but this stat is staggering.

In those 160 games, Simmons is 0-17 behind the arc, and shoots only 58.3% on the foul line. For a guard with his overall skills to be such a suspect shooter is really unusual.

He could become one of the all-time greats if he would make jumpers and foul shots.

                  11) Orioles-Rays played a doubleheader Saturday; Baltimore started Aaron Brooks in the first game— they just got him from the A’s, where he started six games this season. Baltimore is a bad baseball team; they need all the help they can get.

Brooks retires the first eight batters he faced, throwing 32 pitches, but then they take him out, the night after they lost 16-4— WHY?!?!?!?! Brooks is 29, he’s not a big prospect, so they’re not trying to preserve his arm or anything. It makes zero sense.

Of course the next pitcher gives up a home run to the first batter he faces.

                  10) Orioles traded their best pitcher Andrew Cashner to Boston, for minor league IF Noelberth Romero and minor league OF Elio Prado. Both minor leaguers are 17 years old.

                  9) Washington QB Case Keenum is on his 4th team in four years this season; he started 39 games (21-18) the last three years, but he changes addresses every year. Will the Redskins play Keenum ahead of Colt McCoy, until rookie Dwayne Haskins is ready to play?

Keenum was the Rams’ QB ahead of Jared Goff in 2016, so he knows that drill; he started the first nine games (4-5) but the first round draft pick will eventually start, just the way it is.

                  8) Lebron James will still wear #23 for the Lakers this coming season, due to production issues and the massive financial hit Nike would have absorbed from the No. 23 James inventory that’s already been produced.

Anthony Davis will wear #3 for the Lakers this season.

                  7) College basketball transfer portal
                  — Shakur Juiston bolts from UNLV to Oregon.

                  6) Former UNLV start Anthony Bennett was the first player taken in the 2013 NBA Draft, but his career fizzled out fairly quickly; he’s played for three NBA teams and five G-League teams in the last six years. Now Bennett has agreed to a non-guaranteed deal with the Houston Rockets- we wish him well.

                  5) Grayson Allen got tossed out of a summer league game Thursday, after he got a flagrant foul, with Memphis down 24 in 4th quarter. Funny how the TV announcers didn’t cover for him this time, like they did when he was in college.

                  4) Likewise, it was suggested one TV during the week that Zion Williamson might want to get in better shape before the Pelicans begin their training camp. How does a kid with so much money on the line come to summer league in less than tip-top shape?

                  3) First-round matchups for December’s Diamond Head Classic:
                  Houston/Portland
                  Georgia Tech/Boise State
                  Washington/UTEP
                  Ball State/Hawaii

Next time you hear someone whining that college athletes should get paid, ask them how many free trips to Hawai’i they’ve gotten in their lives, complete with free, first class hotels.

                  2) Angels/Rays both scored seven runs in first inning Friday, first time two teams did that on the same night since April 20, 2013, when the Angels/Indians did it.

Then Saturday, Cubs and A’s did it, too.

                  1) ESPN shows the World Series of Poker on a 30-minute delay; was watching it late into the night Friday night/Saturday morning, with the field down to 12 players (nine make the final table). Not always the best TV, because the hands aren’t edited; there is a lot of waiting as players decide whether or not to call bets. Lot of money rides on the outcome.

There was a controversy late at night (I mean, 4am in the east) where one player asked how much it was to call a bet and the dealer said the wrong amount, by like $5M. When it was pointed out there was a long delay, but according to the rules, it is the player’s responsibility to know the correct amount, no matter what the dealer says.

                        • Preview: Dream (5-11) at Sky (9-8)
                          Date: July 17, 2019 12:00 PM EDT

They may not be All-Star starters, but Chicago Sky guards Courtney Vandersloot and Diamond DeShields are WNBA All-Stars all the same.

James Wade's dynamic backcourt looks to power the Sky to a third straight victory Wednesday when they host the Atlanta Dream in a matinee in Chicago.

Vandersloot leads the WNBA in assists by a comfortable margin at 8.2 per game and is on her way to leading the league in that category for a third straight season. She is threatening her league-record mark of 8.6 per contest set last year, and with both DeShields and fellow All-Star Allie Quigley - the league's leader in 3-pointers made and Vandersloot's wife - marking the first time Chicago (9-8) has had three All-Stars since 2013, there are plenty of reasons to celebrate Monday's announcement.

"It seems like it's always been one or another, which has been fine with us," Vandersloot told the Chicago Sun-Times. "But it's really cool that we both get to experience it together. It'll be really cool to look back on this one day when we were both All-Stars."

Quigley is also the two-time 3-point shootout champion, but it has not been announced if she will defend her title at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas later this month. DeShields, a first-time All-Star selection, is averaging 14.9 points in her second season.

Chicago got back over the .500 mark with an 89-79 victory at Dallas on Sunday. DeShields delivered from 3-point range, hitting 5 of 7 from deep and finishing with a season-high 26 points. Quigley added 12 points and Vandersloot chipped in eight and eight assists as the Sky finished 11 of 20 from 3-point range.

Atlanta (5-11) did not have any players selected to the All-Star team and continues to play without last year's leading scorer Angel McCoughtry as she recovers from a torn ACL suffered last year. The Dream were denied a third straight victory Sunday, losing 76-71 in overtime to the Sparks.

Tiffany Hayes forced overtime with a basket just before the buzzer, but the Dream could not recover from back-to-back 3-pointers by Los Angeles in the extra period. Hayes finished with 24 points and Monique Billings added nine and a career-high 16 rebounds for Atlanta, which continued to struggle offensively and shot 32.9 percent.

"I thought we did what we needed to do defensively, but it's hard to win games going 2 for 19 from the arc," coach Nicki Collen told the Dream's official website. "I would guess that of those 17 misses, 12 of them might have been unguarded. We just have to make a higher percentage of those to consistently win. We're gonna win some games with those kind of numbers, but we're not gonna consistently win going 2 for 19 from the arc."

McCoughtry's absence has made scoring difficult for the Dream all season - they are last in the WNBA in scoring (69.9), overall shooting percentage (36.9) and 3-point shooting percentage (28.4). Hayes leads the team with 13.3 points per game but is shooting just 39.7 percent.

Atlanta, which is 1-5 on the road this season, won two of the three games between the teams last year, including an 89-74 romp at home in the most recent matchup.

                          • Preview: Wings (5-11) at Mercury (7-8)
                            Date: July 17, 2019 3:30 PM EDT

As the Phoenix Mercury look to get back on track following two straight defeats, it's uncertain if Diana Taurasi will be available to make her home debut Wednesday.

The ailing Taurasi could miss a second consecutive game when Phoenix takes on a Dallas Wings club that's still looking for its first road triumph of 2019.

Taurasi, the WNBA's all-time leading scorer, made her season debut following a back injury in Friday's 79-64 loss at Connecticut. She failed to make a field goal and reportedly tweaked her back before sitting out Sunday's 75-62 defeat in Minnesota.

"She needs to be comfortable," coach Sandy Brondello told the WNBA's official website earlier this month. "Her back needs to be feeling good, but the rest of her body, too."

All-Stars DeWanna Bonner (19.4 points per game) and Brittney Griner (18.8) continue to pace the Mercury (7-8), who are trying to avoid losing three straight for the second time in 2019. Bonner scored 27 of her 47 points over the last two games Sunday.

Griner had just 12 points, and the two were the only players in double figures for Phoenix, which shot 38.7 percent.

The Mercury hope for a much better outing than their first meeting with the Wings this season on June 20. Griner and Bonner were held to a combined 20 points as Phoenix shot 24.6 percent and was outrebounded 49-28.

Dallas (5-11) also is looking to avoid a third straight loss and finally add a victory to its 0-7 road mark. It's the franchise's worst road start since 2012, when the team was based in Tulsa. The Wings led by five at halftime on Sunday versus Chicago, but were outscored 31-13 in the third quarter of an 89-79 defeat at home.

Arike Ogunbowale scored 20 points for the Wings, who shot 38 percent and went 4 of 18 from 3-point range. The rookie guard is averaging a team-leading 15.1 points but is shooting 35.7 percent. She has averaged 19.8 points in the last four games, but scored just nine versus Phoenix last month.

Kayla Thornton had 18 points with 11 rebounds against the Mercury in June.

These teams will meet again Saturday night in Arlington, Texas.

                            • Preview: Storm (10-8) at Lynx (10-7)
                              Date: July 17, 2019 8:00 PM EDT

As the Seattle Storm aim for a season-high third straight victory, the team is looking into physical abuse allegations against leading scorer Natasha Howard.

With that cloud hanging over the club, the Storm visit the Minnesota Lynx on Wednesday night.

Howard, averaging team highs of 17.4 points and 8.2 rebounds, scored 14 in a 78-69 home victory over New York on Sunday. It was one day after her wife posted a video on Twitter dating back to March in which she was yelling at Howard about being threatened by the Storm's All-Star forward.

"We are in continued communication with the league, and their investigation is now in progress," the Storm said via a statement over the weekend.

While charges have not been filed, it would appear Howard will be ready to play Wednesday. It's apparently another moment of adversity for reigning WNBA champion Seattle (10-8), which has already dealt with coach Dan Hughes' cancer diagnosis and injuries to stars Breanna Stewart, Sue Bird and Jewell Loyd (15.8 ppg).

However, the Storm still have a winning record and will attempt to focus on a chance for a second win in three games with Minnesota (10-7) this season. Howard has totaled 30 points in two contests against the Lynx.

Minnesota leading scorer Odyssey Sims, who is also dealing with her own off-court issues while reportedly facing drunk driving charges from an incident earlier this season, had 15 points and Sylvia Fowles added 14 with 13 rebounds in Sunday's 75-62 home win over Phoenix. For Fowles, it was her league-record 158th double-double.

"The things that (Fowles) does, it's because she's so consistent with it that people don't acknowledge it as much as they should, but the passes that she catches, the things she can do, defensively, she can guard guards, I mean she can guard guards on the perimeter," rookie teammate Napheesa Collier, who had 14 points with 11 rebounds versus Phoenix, told the Lynx's official website.

Fowles has 23 points and 18 rebounds in the two games with Seattle this season. Sims, meanwhile, totaled 20 points in those two contests.

"It's (Sims) and Syl that sort of make our offense go," Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve said.

Crystal Langhorne scored a team-high 19 points off the bench for Seattle against the Liberty.
