    — Villanova 80, Seton Hall 52— Wildcats are 7-0 in the Big East.

    — Minnesota 92, Iowa 87— Hawkeyes made 10-18 on the arc, still lost.

    — Florida State 78, Miami 66— Seminoles made 12-20 three-pointers.

    — Oregon 78, Washington State 58— Coogs lost nine of their last ten games.

    — Justin Rose won the Farmers Insurance Open by 3 shots over Adam Scott.

    — Why is the Oklahoma City Thunder retiring Nick Collison’s jersey?

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

    13) Quick story to start this week off:

Long, long time ago, my junior year in high school, we had a good basketball team. Third or fourth game of the year, we play a rival school that is also supposed to be really good, but with 2:00 left in the first half, we led 33-4. It was tremendous. 33. to. 4.

Other team scores last seven points of the half; we’re up 33-11 in a game with no shot clock and no 3-pointers— it is December, 1975. Our coach was NOT happy.

The guy spent the whole halftime screaming about those seven points; if I remember right, the final was 68-44, something like that. An easy win; halftime should’ve been a positive time.

We wound up winning the league in miraculous fashion on the last day of the season, but on that December night, I learned a lot about coaching, about how being too negative can turn kids off pretty quickly. Two of the juniors on that team wouldn’t play the next year, when they would’ve been starters. Finished 8-11 the next season. No bueno.

    12) Really good article on ESPN.com about the Cleveland Browns’ front office and how messed up it has been since Jimmy Haslam bought the team. Go read it; long article, but interesting.

Trivia: Haslam and former senator Bob Corker were roommates at U of Tennessee.

    11) Sometimes things that help teams win are things that have NOTHING to do with that team.

For instance, the Cleveland Browns drafted Johnny Manziel because thats who Haslam wanted them to draft; the GM wanted Oregon State WR Brandin Cooks.

Cooks play WR for the Rams now, will play in the Super Bowl Sunday, all because the Browns’ owner meddled and demanded they take Manziel.

    10) Iowa State has come a long way this season; they’re 15-5, 4-3 in the Big X; last year, Cyclones went 13-18, 4-14 in league- they weren’t favored in any of their Big X games last year. None.

    9) Home teams won nine of ten games in the SEC-Big X challenge; Iowa State was only road team to win- they won at Ole Miss.

They extended the SEC-Big X challenge six years, so it must get good TV ratings.

    8) Cincinnati 72, Temple 68— Bearcats were down 35-25 at halftime, then by 14 in second half, but rallied to win and move to 7-1 in AAC.

    7) Georgetown 89, St John’s 78— Patrick Ewing was a great defensive player, but his Hoya teams play fast, are fun to watch. Average total in Georgetown’s Big East games is 169; now all Ewing has to do is win (3-4) some more of those games.

    6) Purdue 73, Michigan State 63— Boilermakers never trailed; they won’t play a better game this season, ending Michigan State’s 22-game Big 14 win streak.

    5) No idea who the guy is, but the analyst on the Indiana State-Illinois State game Sunday went on a brief rant near the end of the game, about how “….if we put a man on the moon, how come we can’t grow hair on a bald man’s head?” Briefly stunning, kind of funny and a fair question.

Turns out the guy’s name is Doyle; hope CBS moves him up in the analyst hierarchy.

    4) Kirk Cousins makes $28M a year; Tom Brady makes $20.5M; either Robert Kraft is paying Brady off under the table, circumventing the salary cap, or Brady’s agent is the dumbest person in New England. How is Brady not one of the top five highest-paid QB’s?

    3) Sunday of President’s Day weekend should be fun; college hoop, Daytona 500 and the NBA All-Star Game. That covers the demographics of just about everyone in America, right?

In case you’re wondering, first spring training baseball game is February 21; the first full day of games is February 23.

    2) I watch a ton of sports on TV; basketball, baseball, football. Can’t remember the last time I watched the Pro Bowl, except a few minutes in a bar last year because Jared Goff was playing. Understood that people bet on the game and therefore have an interest, but there is nothing in sports that interests me less than the Pro Bowl, except soccer. Don’t like soccer.

    1) Tip of the cap to my mailman, who trudged through snowy lawns all week delivering the mail to our neighborhood. Job can’t be much fun in the winter; cold as hell, windy, lot of snow on the ground, but his work is appreciated.

      Monday's Tip Sheet
      Kevin Rogers

Game of the Night: Warriors at Pacers – 7:05 PM EST

The runaway train known as the Golden State Warriors (35-14 SU, 22-26-1 ATS) is steamrolling through the league once again. The two-time defending champions finished off their 10th consecutive victory in Saturday’s 115-111 triumph over the Celtics as a 3 ½-point road favorites. Kevin Durant led the Warriors with 33 points, while Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson combined for 45 points. Golden State is riding a nine-game winning streak away from Oracle Arena, while going 13-1 SU and 8-6 ATS in the past 14 games away from the Bay Area.

The Pacers (32-16 SU, 25-23 ATS) are dealing with life after Victor Oladipo as the guard is sidelined for the rest of the season following a gruesome leg injury suffered last Wednesday against Toronto. In the first game post-Oladipo, Indiana fell behind early at Memphis on Saturday and never recovered in a 106-103 setback as five-point favorites. The loss ended a three-game winning streak for the Pacers, while Indiana sailed OVER the total for the first time in five contests.

Indiana is listed as a home underdog for the fourth time this season, as the Pacers own a perfect 3-0 SU/ATS mark after beating the Celtics, Jazz, and Bucks at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Pacers swept the Warriors last season, but those results are skewed as Golden State played without Curry, Thompson, Durant, and Draymond Green in a 92-81 home defeat. In the second matchup in Indianapolis, Curry remained sidelined in a 126-106 victory by the Pacers as a short ‘dog, ending a two-game home skid to the Warriors.

      Boston Bounce-Back?

The Celtics (30-19 SU, 25-24 ATS) saw their five-game winning streak come to a halt in Saturday’s 115-111 setback to the Warriors. Boston and Golden State went back-and-forth in the fourth quarter, but the Celtics scored only thee points in the final 2:30 minutes to suffer its first home loss since December 21 to Milwaukee.

Boston welcomes in Brooklyn for their third meeting this month as the two Atlantic division rivals have split the first two matchups. The Celtics routed the Nets at TD Garden, 116-95 as 10 ½-point favorites on January 7, but Brooklyn bounced back a week later at home, 109-102 as 2 ½-point underdogs. Kyrie Irving sat out in the contest at Barclays Center as the Nets outscored the Celtics, 44-21 in the fourth quarter. Both matchups finished UNDER the total, while Boston has won five straight home meetings with Brooklyn.

The Nets (27-23 SU, 28-22 ATS) have vaulted to the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs heading into Monday’s action, while seeking their seventh straight victory. Brooklyn will be without bench spark Spencer Dinwiddie (17.2 ppg) for the next month with torn ligaments in his right thumb. The Nets have won four of their last six games away from Barclays Center, but Brooklyn owns an 0-3 SU/ATS record as a double-digit underdog this season.

      Rocky Road

The Nuggets (33-15 SU, 27-21 ATS) continue to dominate at home by improving to 22-4 at Pepsi Center following Saturday’s 126-110 victory over the short-handed 76ers. Nikola Jokic kept up his MVP-caliber season by scoring 32 points, pulling down 18 rebounds, and dishing out 10 assists for Denver, who cashed the OVER for the seventh straight game.

However, Denver has struggled on the highway by compiling an 11-11 record, while starting the season with an 8-4 road mark. Seven losses in the last 10 road games doesn’t bode well for the Nuggets, who play six of the next seven away from Pepsi Center, starting Monday in Memphis.

The Grizzlies (20-30 SU, 20-30 ATS) snapped an eight-game losing streak in Saturday’s 106-103 mild upset of the Pacers as five-point home underdogs. Memphis pulled off this win after losing to Sacramento the night before, as the Grizzlies started this five-game homestand at 0-3. The Grizzlies and Nuggets have split two meetings this season with the home team winning each time, while Memphis knocked off Denver at FedEx Forum as short underdogs in November.

      Four Score

The Clippers (28-22 SU, 28-22 ATS) have gone through plenty of ups and downs this season, but Los Angeles is currently on the uptick. Following a five-game skid earlier this month, the Clippers have won four of their last five contests, while seeking their fourth consecutive win on Monday. Los Angeles topped Sacramento for the third time this season in Sunday’s 122-108 triumph at Staples Center. The Clippers knocked down 27-of-29 free throws, while Montrezl Harrell posted 25 points off the bench on 11-of-13 shooting.

Los Angeles is playing with no rest for the ninth time this season, compiling a 4-4 SU and 5-3 ATS mark, while hitting the OVER six times. The Clippers host the Hawks (15-33 SU, 21-27 ATS), who are in the midst of five straight road games against Western Conference opponents. Atlanta lost at Portland on Saturday, 120-111 as 8 ½-point underdogs, but received a solid output from rookie Trae Young, who scored 30 points on 11-of-15 from the floor. The Hawks will be looking to avenge a 127-119 home loss to the Clippers in November, as L.A. outscored Atlanta, 38-23 in the fourth to cash as 6 ½-point favorites.

      All Knicked Up

It’s been a long season in the Big Apple, as the Knicks (10-38 SU, 21-26 ATS) sit at the bottom of the Atlantic division. New York lost its ninth straight game in Sunday’s defeat to Miami, while dropping 11 consecutive contests at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks will try to turn around their luck with a trip to Charlotte looking to beat the Hornets for the second time this season.

The last time the Knicks faced the Hornets on December 14, New York trailed Charlotte by 19 points late in the fourth quarter before rallying to force overtime. The Knicks shocked the Hornets, 126-124 as 10-point underdogs to pick up their only win in a 14-game span from December 3 through January 1. New York owns a respectable 4-2 ATS mark in its last six games away from the Garden, although the Knicks only picked up one victory, which came against the Lakers earlier this month.

The Hornets (23-25 SU, 25-23 ATS) squandered an 11-point lead heading into the fourth quarter in Friday’s 108-99 setback at Milwaukee. Although Charlotte covered as 11-point underdogs, the Bucks outscored the Hornets in the final 12 minutes, 32-12, while Kemba Walker shot 3-of-12 from the floor for 10 points. The Hornets improved to 5-1 ATS the last six games, as Charlotte won its past two home contests by double-digits over Phoenix and Sacramento.

                    Playing their best at home

The Knicks have lost nine straight games and find themselves as 12-point underdogs as they travel to Charlotte to take on the Hornets. The Hornets have been a huge disappointment this season but find themselves in a fortunate spot to potentially make the playoffs with the Pacers and Nets being dealt huge injury blows.

With the Hornets posting a 16-8 record at home and covering the spread in five of their last six home games, take the Hornets as 12-point favorites versus a Knicks team giving up 115.3 ppg.

                    Huge test without their superstar

Unfortunately for the Pacers, they will be without Victor Oladipo as they host a Golden State squad that has won 10 straight games. Oladipo ruptured his quad last week against the Raptors and will miss the rest of the season.

Throughout the month of January, the Warriors have averaged 129.1 points per game. Despite how well the Warriors have been playing, they take on the league's number one defense in points per game. With the Under hitting in six of the last nine games at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, look for the Pacers to keep Golden State just enough in check and back Under the total of 228.5.

Taking advantage of a mismatch down low

The Nets travel to Boston to take on the Celtics shorthanded without Jared Dudley, Allen Crabbe, and Spencer Dinwiddie. Although the Net have won eight of their last ten games, and six straight, they have struggled historically versus Boston only winning one of their last 10 in the head-to-head (with that win coming by six points two weeks ago in Brooklyn).

Look for the Celtics Al Horford to make it two straight solid games as he takes on a Nets team surrendering 25.6 points on 53.6 percent shooting and 17.9 rebounds per game while ranking 25th in opponent points in the paint with 51.2. Take Over Horford’s points, rebounds, assists total of 24.5.

Harris needs to step up for Nuggets

The Memphis Grizzlies host the Denver Nuggets, who will be without their starting point guard in Jamal Murray.

The Nuggets’ Gary Harris could be primed for a big day in the absence of Murray as he is in a favorable spot versus a Grizzlies team that has struggled to defend opposing shooting guards allowing 24.1 points, 3.3 made 3-point shots, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game. Look for Harris to find success from the floor and back Over his points, rebounds, assists total of 20.5.

Dedmon to have big game in his hometown

The Clippers will be playing the tail end of a back-to-back as they host the Hawks. Atlanta has struggled versus Los Angeles losing five straight in the head-to-head. However, Atlanta has been playing well offensively, averaging 111.7 points per game over its most recent three games, and takes on a Clippers team giving up 113.3 ppg.

Look for Hawks big man Dewayne Dedmon to take advantage of his size and capitalize off a good matchup. The Clippers have been one of the worst teams at defending opposing centers allowing 26.1 points and 17 rebounds per game to opposing centers. Back Over his points, rebounds, assists total of 18.5.

Kyrie Irving (left hip strain) will not play Monday at home vs. the Nets.
The Celtics are 4-2 SU and ATS without Irving this season. Over/Under is 3-3.
                    Pointspread: Celtics -9
