    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

    — Louisville 84, NC State 77— Cardinals are quietly 14-5, 5-1 in the ACC.

    — Hofstra 85, James Madison 68— Kid on Hofstra nailed an 80-footer at the halftime buzzer.

    — Washington 61. Oregon 56— Huskies have a 2-game lead in the Pac-12.

    — Belmont 79, Murray State 66— First OVC loss for the Racers.

    — Michigan State 82, Iowa 67— Spartans won/covered all nine Big 14 games.

    — Arizona State 84, UCLA 73— ASU’s first win in Pauley since James Harden was a Sun Devil.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

    13) Jets’ safety Jamal Adams was signing autographs at a Pro Bowl practice when he saw the New England Patriots’ mascot. Adams said “I’m fixing to go knock this mascot out!” and then ran over and decked the mascot with a flying tackle. It looked like a pre-planned stunt; it wasn’t.

Apparently the guy inside the mascot costume wound up in the hospital; a Patriots’ spokesman actually put out a statement that said the mascot is “sore”. The mascot himself posted something on social media that indicated the injury wasn’t too bad.

    Oy.

    12) Sign of the Times: USC signed a football recruit from Mater Dei HS on December 19, a wide receiver; the kid bolts high school early, enrolls in USC for the spring semester, but now that USC’s new OC Kliff Kingsbury jumped to the Arizona Cardinals, the kid has already decided to transfer. He’s supposed to still be in high school, for Pete’s sake, and he’s already transferred.

USC still hasn’t named a replacement for Kingsbury; Signing Day for college football is coming up in 12 days or so.

    11) Brooklyn Nets G Spencer Dinwiddie has torn ligaments in his right thumb, is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. He was averaging 17.2 ppg, 5.0 assists per game for the 26-23 Nets, who lost Caris LaVert to a dislocated ankle in November.

Pacers’ star Victor Oladipo has a ruptured quad tendon in his right knee and will miss the rest of the season.

    10) AJ Pollock signed a 4-year deal with the Dodgers for roughly $55M, giving LA another right-handed bat.

    9) When Kyler Murray makes his decision between football and baseball, he better study the case of former Michigan QB Drew Henson, who picked baseball but washed out after six years, then went to the NFL, where he bounced around for a few more years.

Henson played in one more NFL game (9) than major league games (8).

If Murray is going to be a first-round pick in the NFL, he pretty much has to go that route, there is too much money on the table in football. Lamar Jackson was the last pick in the first round last April, and signed a four-year, $7.6M contract, which is $3M more than the bonus Murray would get from Oakland if he sticks with baseball.

    8) It is January 25 and the Oakland A’s don’t have a radio deal for this coming season yet; they made the playoffs last year, you think this wouldn’t be hard to find. No bueno.

    7) Upsets of the Night:
    — Tex-Arlington (+9.5) 72, Georgia Southern 67
    — Towson State (+9) 75, Northeastern 72
    — UAB (+6.5) 52, North Texas 49
    — Eastern Kentucky (+4.5) 88, Jacksonville State 70
    — Belmont (+4.5) 79, Murray State 66

    6) In 2017, there were 702 times a baseball player was put on the DL, another 737 in 2018, blamed in part on the new 10-day disabled list, which is why MLB may go back to a 15-day DL, to discourage teams from abusing the DL.

    5) Panthers’ QB Cam Newton had his throwing shoulder scoped this week; no one is saying when Newton will be back throwing a football.

    4) Wofford 107, Samford 106, OT— Kid on Wofford hit a 17-foot fadeaway at the buzzer for the win. Terriers are now 8-0 in the Southern Conference. Pretty sure I had the under in this game.

    3) Wilt Chamberlain holds a lot of NBA records; one of the most impressive is that he once had 55 rebounds in a game, on November 24, 1960, against the Celtics.

    2) Pretty good night for basketball fans in Los Angeles; the Lakers, UCLA and USC all played at home. So did Cal State-Fullerton. Lot of solid entertainment in Tinseltown.

    1) ESPN came up with some old video Thursday from 2007, of a Kent State-Miami OH football game, where Kent’s QB was Julian Edelman, while Miami had a WR named Sean McVay.

In 2007, Rams were in first year of a 3-year stretch where they went 6-42; who would’ve thought that the guy who would eventually fix that mess was that WR at Miami? Life is funny sometimes.

      Friday's Tip Sheet
      David Schwab

The final Friday night of college basketball betting action in the month of January features a doubleheader of early starts with a nationally ranked team trying to win on the road.

The Big Ten’s No. 5 Michigan Wolverines face a stern road test against the Indiana Hoosiers, while the Mid-American Conference’s No. 14 Buffalo Bulls try and bounce back from their first conference loss of the season in a road game against Kent State.

No. 5 Michigan Wolverines at Indiana Hoosiers (FOX Sports 1, 6:30 p.m. ET)

      Opening Odds: Michigan -3 ½, Total 133

      Betting Matchup

The Wolverines followed up their first straight-up loss of the year with a shaky 59-57 victory at home against Minnesota on Tuesday night as 12 ½-point favorites. Last Saturday’s 64-54 road loss to Wisconsin as 3 ½-point favorites stayed UNDER 126 points and the total also stayed UNDER Tuesday’s 137 ½-point closing line.

Michigan is 18-1 SU with a 7-1 record in Big Ten play. It has gone 9-10 against the spread overall while covering in five of eight conference games. The Wolverines remain one of the top defensive teams in the nation with a points-allowed average of 57.1.

Indiana will be looking to avenge a 74-63 loss to Michigan on Jan. 6 as a nine-point road underdog. This marked the start of a SU five-game skid while going 1-5 ATS in its last six games. The Hoosiers are coming off Tuesday’s 73-66 road loss to Northwestern as slight 1 ½-point underdogs.

In the first game against the Wolverines, Indiana fell behind by 15 points at the half and never closed the gap. Senior forward Juwan Morgan (16.5 PPG) scored 25 points and the Hoosiers’ leading scorer freshman guard Romeo Langford (17.6 PPG) added 17 points in the losing cause.

      Betting Trends

-- The Wolverines have a 21-8-1 record ATS over their last 30 road games and they have covered in four of their last five games following a SU win. The total has gone OVER in their last four Friday games.

-- The Hoosiers are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games coming off a SU loss, but they have covered in 15 of their last 22 home games. The total has stayed UNDER in six of their last seven games played at home.

-- The underdog has covered in seven of the last 10 meetings with the total going OVER in seven of the last 10 meetings at Indiana.

No. 14 Buffalo Bulls at Kent State Golden Flashes (CBS Sports Network, 6:30 p.m. ET)

      Opening Odds: Buffalo -10, Total 158 ½

      Betting Matchup

The Bulls started catching national attention early in the season with quality wins against West Virginia and Syracuse closing as underdogs. Their SU five-game winning streak in the MAC came to an end on Tuesday night with a stunning 77-75 road loss to Northern Illinois as nine-point favorites.

Buffalo (17-2 SU) has failed to cover in its last three games as part of an overall record of 11-6-1 ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in four of its last six games. As part of a trio of players averaging at least 14 PPG, senior guard CJ Massinburg continues to lead the way with 18.1 point a game. He scored 23 points in Tuesday’s loss after posting 31 points in a win against Eastern Michigan on Jan. 18.

Kent State has been able to keep pace near the top of the MAC standings at 4-2 (SU and ATS) in its first six conference games. It is 15-4 SU overall following Tuesday’s 87-85 overtime victory against Toledo as a three-point home underdog.

The Golden Flashes improved to 10-7 ATS overall after covering the closing number in their last three games and the total has gone OVER in four of their first six conference games. Senior guard Jaylin Walker went off for 31 points against Northern Illinois last Saturday ahead of 36-point performance on Tuesday night that helped Kent State erase a 17-point deficit.

      Betting Trends

-- The Bulls are 20-9-1 ATS in their last 30 games following a SU loss and they have covered in seven of their last 10 conference games. The total has stayed UNDER in four of their last five games against a SU winning team.

-- The Golden Flashes have gone just 2-5-2 ATS in their last nine Friday games, but they have covered in five of their last seven games against a SU winning team. The total has gone OVER in six of their last eight home games.

-- Kent State has covered in four of the last five meetings with the total staying UNDER in five of the last six matchups.
