Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Some college knowledge……..

Request for college basketball fans: If you know of an impact transfer who is going to become eligible this month, please e-mail his name/school to me and we’ll post it for everyone’s benefit, because not every school’s semester ends at the same time.

    I have two right now:
    Butler- Tucker
    Western Kentucky- Bearden.

These two teams will be helped because these kids can play now. Adds some depth and increases the talent level.

For today, I’m looking at college basketball conferences so far this season:

    13) Big X:
    — Kansas (schedule #10)/Texas Tech (schedule #339) haven’t lost yet
    — Iowa State is 7-2 but has been missing four guys for various reasons; two of those guys came back two games ago. Cyclones’ bench minutes are #345, but depth is on the way.
    — West Virginia is 5-3, has very young guards, and I’m not sure how they get a lot better, unless those young guards suddenly become good young guards.
    — Texas is 5-3, losing at home to Radford/VCU. This is Shaka Smart’s 4th year at Texas- his teams at Texas have played tempo #306-212-316-194.

When he was at VCU, Smart’s teams played tempo #69-156-173-91-22-70. Why the difference, other than pressing/trapping is hard unless your players are better athletes than your opponents.

    12) Big 14:
    — They’re playing 20 conference games now, so teams play two games in December.
    — Five teams started conference play 2-0; five started 0-2.
    — Illinois is 2-7, the only team under .500
    — Seven Big 14 teams are in KenPom.com‘s top 30
    — Nebraska, Northwestern are two most experienced teams in league.

    11) ACC:
    — Duke is #343 in experience, which is why college hoop handicapping has become so difficult, weighing talent against experience. I want Duke to play Nevada in March.
    — Virginia is only unbeaten team in the league.
    — Pitt was 7-1 before losing at home to Niagara; whoops- they start three freshmen.
    — Louisville is 6-2 vs schedule #86 in Chris Mack’s first season; great job so far.
    — ACC has eight teams in the top 32
    — Miami lost last four games, with three losses by 4 or fewer points.

    10) SEC:
    — Auburn/Tennessee are two highest-rated teams, a change from normal.
    — Kentucky is 7-1 vs schedule #319; they lost 118-84 to Duke- best team they’ve beaten is #71 NC-Greensboro.
    — South Carolina was in Final Four two years ago; they’re 21-20 since. Not good.
    — Texas A&M is 3-4 vs schedule #204; they’re experience team #274, Could be a down year.
    — Vanderbilt lost its star freshman PG Darius Garland for the season (knee)

    9) Big East:
    — St John’s is 8-0 vs schedule #322; how good are they?
    — Georgetown is 7-1 vs schedule #304; same question.
    — Only four Big East teams are listed in the top 50.
    — Creighton has made 45.8% of its 3’s (#2) so far this season.
    — If you were wondering, Indiana State (48.8%) is #1
    — Villanova is playing 5th-slowest tempo in country so far.

    8) Pac-12:
    — Only one team ranked in top 40 and Oregon is only 4-3.
    — USC is 0-3 vs top 70 teams; their five wins are vs teams ranked #198 or lower.
    — Washington is #1 in country in minutes continuity; they’re 6-3 with two top 10 losses (Auburn/Gonzaga).
    — UCLA is 6-2 vs schedule #229; they’re #351 in experience, with two key freshmen out for year with injuries. Best team they’ve beaten so far is #122 LMU.
    — Arizona State is 7-0 vs schedule #282, but they were 12-0 in pre-conference play LY, and wound up 20-12.

    7) AAC:
    — 4 of the slowest 15 tempos in America are teams in the AAC.
    — Temple is 7-2 vs schedule #155 in Fran Dunphy’s last season as head coach.
    — Central Florida is 6-2, with two losses by total of 3 points.
    — Wichita State is 4-3 vs schedule #112; they’re a total rebuild (#343 in MC).
    — Memphis is 4-4 vs schedule #54; Tigers start two freshmen, three seniors. Better beat the Tigers now; Penny Hardaway is going to dominate recruiting in Memphis, which will put them in the top 25 sooner rather than later.

    6) WCC:
    — #8-rated conference right now; they were 14th three years ago, #12 LY.
    — Gonzaga is to the WCC what UNLV was to the Big West 30 years ago; huge fish in a small pond that carries the league’s banner on national stage.
    — San Diego beat San Diego State, USF pounded Cal Wednesday; middle of pack in this league has improved a lot, but St Mary’s is a bit down.
    — LMU is playing pack-line defense like Virginia and it is working- they’re 9-1.
    — If BYU jumps into a league for football reasons, who replaces them in WCC? Hawai’i?

    5) Mountain West:
    — Nevada is 8-0 and starts five 5th-year seniors; will the coach be back next year?
    — Wolf Pack is only team in MW in top 60; its a one-bid league, unless someone beats Nevada in the conference tournament.
    — Fresno State is #17 experience team that is probably 2nd-best team in league; they’re 6-2 and start three seniors, two juniors.
    — Boise State is 2-5, with losses to Idaho State/Drake; could be a down year, after winning 20+ games the last six years.
    — UNLV is turning the ball over 24.4% of time and shooting 27.7% on the arc, which is why they’re 4-3 vs schedule #324- their first road game is Saturday at Illinois.

    4) Atlantic 14:
    — League was #10 LY and is #10 this year, their lowest ranks since 2007.
    — A-14 is down right now: #70 Davidson is their highest-rated team.
    — Saint Louis was touted this year, but they’re turning ball over 21.7% of time and making only 29.9% of their 3’s. Despite that, they’re 6-2 vs schedule #217.
    — VCU has had six coaches since 2002, and no losing records. Big fish, smallish pond, and no football to take resources away from basketball.
    — LaSalle changed coaches but change isn’t always positive; they’re 0-9 this season, with losses to Lafayette, Bucknell, Drexel, Grand Canyon- they wouldn’t be the best team in the freakin’ Patriot League.

    3) MAC:
    — Buffalo is legitimately good; they won at West Virginia, are #42 experience team.
    — Toledo is only other MAC team in top 100, so its likely another one-bid year.
    — Rockets are 8-1 and making 41.5% of their 3’s; they’re experience team #81.
    — You look at Kent State’s 7-1 record, then you look at schedule #343- no thanks.
    — Western Michigan is 4-4 vs schedule #314; they’re turning ball over 22.9% of time and making 29.5% of their 3’s, not a good combination.
    — Bowling Green has one winning season since 2010; their coach that year was fired because of an incident in a bar, where the coach was drunk and being a jerk. That coach is now at New Mexico State and his team is 7-1- some schools would’ve built the guy his own private bar.

    2) Missouri Valley;
    — Defections have crippled this league; Wichita State-Creighton were difference-makers.
    — Loyola-Chi is their only top 90 team, and they’ve lost three of last four games.
    — Evansville’s new coach is former NBA player Walter McCarty; Purple Aces are trying to play faster- they’ll be interesting to follow the next couple years.
    — Drake is experience team #116, but #304 in MC, so they’ve been cobbled together by transfers. Bulldogs are also on their third coach in three years, which doesn’t help, but they’re 5-1 so far this season.
    — Northern Iowa won 184 games from 2009-16, but they’re 33-37 the last 2+ seasons, so the coach’s seat has to be getting a little warm.

    1) Ivy:
    — Yale won at Miami, beat Cal, lost in OT at Memphis; their eFG% is #5 in country.
    — Harvard is 4-4 vs schedule #28, but they also lost at #274 Siena.
    — Columbia is 0-6 vs D-I teams, vs schedule #329. Could be a long winter.
    — Penn Quakers are 7-2, are experience team #63- they start two juniors, two seniors.
    — Cornell is #34 experience team, lost by only 8 at Syracuse- did Boeheim take it easy on the Big Red because his son plays for Cornell? (No, he didn’t)

              Friday's Essentials
              Tony Mejia

Game of the Night - Golden State at Milwaukee (PK'em, 240), ESPN, 9:35 ET

The Warriors still won’t have Draymond Green, so we’re not going to get a chance to see MVP candidate Giannis Antetokounmpo deal with the best team in basketball’s top defender. That doesn’t mean Golden State doesn’t want this game against the Bucks (16-7 SU, 12-11 ATS) more badly than it has wanted to win any individual contest it has suited up for in this young season.

Head coach Steve Kerr won’t have to say much as his two-time defending champions take the floor for the first time ever at Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum, the franchise’s new downtown arena. Although the Warriors (17-9 SU, 12-14 ATS) opened a season-long five-game road trip in Toronto against the team with the NBA’s best record, Stephen Curry was held out for an extra few days of rest. That potential Finals preview will take place in Oakland next Wednesday and will likely include Green, who is nearing closer to a return from a toe injury. DeMarcus Cousins is practicing too and may make an appearance before Christmas, which would definitely be much earlier than I expected we’d see him make his Warriors debut.

Golden State’s team is in flux but that doesn’t mean Friday night’s clash with the Bucks isn’t personal. The final leg of the road trip is the one that the group has been pointing toward, a task made easier by the fact their old friends the Cavs are in shambles.

It’s probably killing Green not to play since regular-season games like tonight’s don’t come around often when you’ve won three titles in four years and already own the single-season wins record. However, most opponents don’t come into Oakland and figuratively throw their feet on the furniture while tagging up the walls and desecrating the locker room.

The Bucks handed the Warriors their first home loss in their final season at Oracle Arena.

Milwaukee now owns consecutive victories there after posting a 134-111 rout of the Warriors on Nov. 8 snapped their eight-game winning streak. The Bucks hung a 41-point third quarter on the champs, dominating the start of the second half the way Golden State typically does. Stephen Curry left with an adductor strain that would cost him weeks. Kerr said his team came out with “mindless intent,” hurting themselves with foul trouble. They were out-rebounded 46-38. The 134 points Golden State surrendered were the most the team has given up since Game 4 of the 2017 Finals.

The Bucks had lost eight of nine against the Warriors from Jan. 2014-18 before beating them last March and this time last month and will be looking to become the second Eastern Conference team to sweep Golden State since 2014, following Indiana’s lead from last season. The Central Division leaders bounced back form a 136-134 upset loss to the Knicks over the weekend by absolutely crushing second-place Detroit 115-92 on Wednesday, but the real news out of that one is that shooting guard Khris Middleton was apparently benched.

Middleton is having a fantastic season that will put him in the conversation for a spot as an All-Star reserve, averaging 18.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4 assists. He knocked down a game-winner to help close out November with a win over the Bulls but was benched due to a lack of effort and played just 19 minutes in the loss to New York.

After a film session where Budenholzer pointed out why Middleton was banished to the pine in favor of Sterling Brown, the two had reportedly cleared the air per Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel beat writer Matt Velazquez, but Middleton sat out the Pistons win due to “personal reasons.” He’s not listed on Friday’s injury report and will presumably participate.

Point guard Eric Bledsoe has been fantastic of late and has replaced Middleton as Antetokounmpo’s primary tag-team partner of late, so his matchup with Curry will be worth watching. Bledsoe led the Bucks with 26 points and six assists, while “Greek Freak” added 24 points. Middleton was a game-high plus-33 in that game and is invaluable in that he can defend Curry and Klay Thompson while serving as a viable threat on the other end more effectively than Malcolm Brogdon and Tony Snell. It’s important Milwaukee gets him right.

Even with Green sitting, Golden State should be in much better shape for this rematch than it was for the first meeting since Andre Iguodala has been a fixture in the lineup and was only just returning to the fold this time last month. Shaun Livingston was out with a sore foot and is also back contributing, providing stability for the second unit. Center Damian Jones (shoulder) is expected to remain sidelined, so look for Jonas Jerebko and Kevon Looney to remain in the starting lineup and Jarrett Bell to continue as the primary big man off the bench.

Milwaukee has rookie Dante DiVincenzo back after an injury and should have Middleton in the mix, but forward Ersan Ilyasova has been nursing a concussion, missing four of the last five. He’s questionable. Center John Henson has been out since mid-November due to wrist surgery, so the Bucks’ frontcourt depth is limited. We could very well see a lot of small ball here, but the total of 240 is certainly taking that into account. The first meeting produced the highest number of the season for Milwaukee, closing at 242. It’s Golden State’s second-largest total to date. The ‘over’ is 2-1 in Warriors games that close over 240.

Six of Milwaukee’s last nine games have gone ‘under.’ Six of the Warriors’ last seven have gone ‘over.’ Curry is averaging 33.0 points since returning from his groin injury, shooting 18-for-33 from 3-point range.

              Best of the Rest

              Philadelphia (-2.5/219) at Detroit, 7:05 p.m. ET:
The Pistons will look to turn around a brutal run that has seen their strong start short-circuit in lopsided losses to Oklahoma City and Milwaukee by a combined margin of 50 points. This will be the first of two games in four nights for Detroit against Philadelphia, so the potential is there for some bad blood to develop between these potential Eastern Conference playoff rivals since most of the guys up front are alphas who thrive on running their mouths. The teams have already split a pair of contentious meetings this season. Andre Drummond landed in foul trouble in the most recent meeting on Nov. 3, playing just 21 minutes. He shot 6-for-20 in an Oct. 23 home win at Little Caesar’s Arena in which Blake Griffin scored 50 points in 133-132 OT win.

Joel Embiid comes off an awful effort in Wednesday night’s loss to Toronto and has surmised his recent form has been “trash,” so he’ll be looking to rebound and has averaged 36 points and 14 boards in the two games against the Pistons thus far. This will be Detroit’s first look at Jimmy Butler-infused Philly, so we’ll see how Griffin handles another active defender he’ll have to deal with. Starting shooting guard Rodney Bullock and backup point guard Ish Smith are considered doubtful, so Langston Galloway, Luke Kennard and veteran Jose Calderon are likely to play larger roles and starter Reggie Jackson should get a longer leash.

              Indiana at Orlando (-2/206.5), 7:05 p.m. ET:
Pacers-Magic games got spicier last season given the presence of Frank Vogel on Orlando’s sideline and the emergence of former draft picks Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonis in Indiana, so it’s disappointing that this first meeting of the season will only feature one of them. Vogel reportedly turned down an assistant’s job in Houston and Oladipo is still on the mend with a sore knee, so only Sabonis’ improvement ties these teams together tonight. Both are playing reasonably well, although Indiana is relying on Darren Collison, Cory Joseph and Tyreke Evans to adequately replace Oladipo’s magic and have gotten spotty results. The Magic have seen Aaron Gordon return from injury to have a big week so far, while Nikola Vucevic and Evan Fournier have continued to produce offensively. Orlando has been vulnerable at home, winning just six of 13, while Indiana Is 7-6 on the road.

                Dominating the glass

The Hornets have been one of the worst teams in the Association defending the opposing center position surrendering an average of 24.6 points on 53.6 percent shooting, and 16.5 rebounds a game. This is a great spot for one of the league's best centers as Denver's Nikola Jokic comes to town. Jokic is scoring double figures in all but six games, and contributing an average of 16.5 points, 7.8 assists and 9.6 rebounds. Take Over his points, rebounds and assists total today of 36.5

                Forcing outside shooting

The Pacers are the top ranked team in the Association in opponent points in the paint per game allowing only 41.5 with that number substantially lower at home at 36.5. Along with defending inside well, the Pacers have been able to limit opposing centers’ all season allowing an average of 19.3 points per game, and only 2.8 assists a game.

This could be a tough matchup for Orlando's Nikola Vucevic who might struggle scoring inside. In what projects to be a low scoring game, take Under his points, rebounds and assists total of 35.5.

Winning ten straight in the head-to-head

The Raptors have won nine of their last 10 games overall and find themselves in a matchup they have historically dominated versus the Nets. In the head-to-head, the Raptors have won the last 10 straight meetings by an average score of 114.3-103.

The Nets have not been able to close games out late allowing for 54.8 second half points per game. They have blown eight double digit leads, and five fourth quarter meltdowns at home since November 13th.

Toronto enters today ranked fifth in the Association in second half points per game with 56.8 and should be able to pull away late. Take the Raptors to cover as 9-point favorites.

                Far too familiar foes

This is the fourth meeting the Lakers and Spurs already this season, and the second in two days. The Spurs had won with first two and looked to have the third locked up when the Spurs let the game slip away late as Lebron James dominated the fourth quarter scoring 14 points in the final four and a half minutes to rally for a 121-113 victory.

The Spurs have posted a 18-7 record over their last 25 games when playing Los Angeles and have won five of their most recent seven home meetings. The Spurs have always played their best ball at home, and today should be no different. Back San Antonio on the money line as small home favorites in what looks like it will close as a Pick.

                Expect offensive fireworks

There is no surprise why the Warriors versus Bucks have the highest total on the card by over 15 points as the league's top offenses meet up. The Bucks enter today averaging 121.1 points per contest, and the Warriors are scoring 116.8, with that number three points higher since Curry's return.

Milwaukee's Khris Middleton missed Wednesday's game due to personal reasons but is not listed on the injury report. Although he has been quiet recently, he is still averaging 18.5 points, 4.0 assists and 5.5 rebounds per contest. Look into taking Over his points, rebounds and assists total of 25.5.
