Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

13) Lot of college basketball games in November are awful; mismatches and teams just scheduling easy wins, but Tuesday I was highly entertained by two excellent games.

Memphis-LSU was great entertainment; Penny Hardaway will build a power with the Tigers, and LSU has a strong young team, also. Both teams played fast and played well.

Georgetown-Illinois was fun to watch; Illini PG got a concussion during the afternoon walk-thru and didn’t play, which brings up a pet peeve of mine.

12) Some coaches are insane; they have these “walk-thrus” on game day but there are guys who turn them into practices— put it this way, you can’t get a concussion while walking. Having a practice on game day takes energy away from the game, which is all that matters. Getting your point guard hurt during a practice on game day is bleeping stupid.

Patrick Ewing’s team has upgraded its talent in his second year on the job, but they got a gift here when the other team’s point guard got hurt.

11) Draymond Green’s one-game suspension cost him $120,000, which is pocket change to Green, but the public nature of it makes it way more significant than that. Green has been the heart of this Warrior dynasty; the most important player isn’t always the best player.

10) Chiefs-Rams line is now 3.5, moving up from 2 or 2.5 when game was scheduled to be played in Mexico City. Total doesn’t seem to have moved, staying at 63.5, the highest NFL total ever.

9) Michigan 73, Villanova 46— Some alum gave Villanova so much money they named their gym after him, then they had FS1 interview him during the game. Too bad he couldn’t play; Michigan avenged (somewhat) their loss to Villanova in the national title game last April.

This game was 44-17 at halftime. Wow.

8) SEC decided to make Nashville the permanent home of its conference basketball tourney, signing a deal to keep the event in Music City thru 2035.

7) IUPUI 76, Boston College 69— Jaguars from the Horizon League were 16-point underdogs; a 6-3 guard named Camron Justice torched the Eagles for 29 points.

6) Magic 111, 76ers 106— Philly led by 16 early in 4th quarter, losing Jimmy Butler’s debut with the 76ers. Orlando is 7-8 and appears to be an improved team- their last winning season was seven years ago.

5) Timberwolves 107, Pelicans 100— Minnesota’s first game with Saric/Covington; from this point on, their record will be measured against Philly, because of the big trade.

4) Pistons 106, Raptors 104— Reggie Bullock scored on an out-of-bounds play at the buzzer as Dwane Casey won his return to Toronto after the Raptors fired him last spring, despite a regular season record of 320-238 (21-30 in playoffs).

3) Radford 63, Notre Dame 60— Not as big an upset as we’d think; Radford won the Big South LY, won a play-in game, then lost to Villanova in NCAA’s. Highlanders were only a 12.5-point underdog; they’re in top 20 nationally in experience, top 50 in minutes continuity and they play a slow tempo, so they’re hard to guard.

2) Singer Billy Idol became a US citizen this week; good to see people who are so happy when they become citizens. This country was built by immigrants, something we shouldn’t forget.

1) NFL flexed the Steelers-Raiders game out of the Sunday night slot on December 9 (Week 14) and instead will show Rams-Bears on NBC. Should be nice and balmy in Chicago for a night game on December 9th. Do they think of the fans in Chicago who pay to go to these games?

Buckeyes are picked to finish in middle of pack in Big 14. Creighton struggled in winning its first two games this; they trailed East Tennessee by 12 with 7:19 left but rallied to win by 6, outscoring ETSU 14-3 on foul line. Bluejays start three sophs, two juniors. Big East home favorites are 2-8 vs spread so far this young season.

Penn State won its first two games by 15 points each; six of eight guys Nittany Lions played in last game are frosh/sophs- this is their first road game. PSU is picked to finish in bottom of half of Big 14. DePaul beat couple of stiffs by 22-28 points to open year; Blue Demons haven’t had a winning season in 12 years- they start two sophs, two seniors. Big 14 teams are 4-1 vs Big East opponents so far this week; over last 3+ years, Big 14 teams are 29-28-1 vs spread when facing a Big East opponent.

Fresno State has a new coach; they beat a D-II team in their opener. Bulldogs lost three starters from LY’s 22-11 team that got Rodney Terry a new job. Aggies start three sophs, two seniors- they lost 3 starters from LY’s 22-13 team that made Sweet 16. Gonzaga is missing one of its best players, 6-10 PF Tillie; they’ve got three starters back from 32-5 team that also made Sweet 16. Zags are off to the Maui Classic after this game.

Virginia Tech has four starters back from a 21-12 team that made NCAAs LY; Hokies start three seniors, one junior- they haven’t done much yey, beating a stiff by 28 in their only game. Ball State split its first two games, beating Indiana State, losing by 9 at Purdue when Cardinals made 11-23 on arc to cover spread; Ball has four starters back from a 19-13 team team that went 10-8 in MAC. Cardinals are a top 75 nationally in experience. Last three years, MAC teams are 10-3 vs spread when playing an ACC opponent.

Alabama has three starters back from 20-16 team that won a game in NCAAs LY but they’re still young, starting a frosh, three sophs; Crimson Tide won their first two games, getting to line 43 times (26-43) in 81-73 home win over Appalachian St Sunday. Northeastern lost finals of CAA tournament here LY; Huskies have all five starters back from that 23-10 team. Northeastern split their first two games this year, losing by 3 to Boston U, then winning by 10 at Harvard. Last three years, SEC teams are 5-3 vs spread when playing an SEC opponent.

Wichita State split its first two games, winning by 3 at Providence after losing home opener to Louisiana Tech; Shockers lost four starters from LY’s 25-8 team that got upset in first round of NCAAs- they’re starting two freshman this season. Davidson has to replace a 2,000-point scorer who graduated LY; Wildcats have three starters back from a 21-12 team, are picked to finish near top of the A-14. Davidson scored 81 ppg in winning its first two games, but 79-76 win vs Dartmouth was bit of a red flag. Of Wildcats’ top 10 guys, only one sub in a senior.

Wake Forest has 7 new guys this year; 5 underclassmen left after LY, an 11-20 disaster (4-14 in ACC). Deacons were 26-33 on line in their opener, a 90-78 win over a stiff. Wake is starting two frosh, two sophs; they’re in bottom 20 in country in experience. St Joe’s won its first two games, beating Old Dominion/Monmouth by 15 points each. Hawks have 3 starters back from 16-16 team that won 7 of its last 9 games. St Joe’s is starting three sophs and a frosh, are picked to finish 4th in A-14. ACC teams are 26-13-1 vs spread in their last 40 games vs A-14 teams.

Long trip east for Cal State-Fullerton squad that lost in double OT at Arizona State in its only D-I game so far; Titans made NCAAs LY, are top 30 experience team- they start three juniors, one senior, with four starters back from LY. Central Florida lost 80-79 at home to FAU in its last game Sunday, blowing an early 20-point lead. Knights start two juniors, two seniors;, are a top 40 experience team they’ve got three starters back from 19-13 team that went 9-9 in AAC. Last three years, AAC teams covered two of three games against Big West teams.

Western Kentucky has recruited well but is young, starting a frosh, three sophs; Hilltoppers split their first two games, losing by 18 at Washington (WKU led by 9 at half). WKU has two starters back from a 27-11 team that lost in NIT semifinals. Valparaiso missed postseason LY for first time in 8 years; Crusaders were 3-6 in games decided by 6 or fewer points- Valpo has three starters back this year, but still has only one senior- they whacked a stiff in their opener, which tells us nothing. Last three years, C-USA teams are 12-5 vs spread vs MVC opponents.

Syracuse won its first two games by 32-14 points, allowing 52 ppg; Orange has all five starters back from a 23-14 team that lost in Elite 8 LY. Syracuse beat UConn two of last three years, as old Big East rivals continue their series. Only one of eight guys Orange played in last game is a senior, but playing UConn here is a big step up in competition. Huskies won first two games of Dan Hurley era by 10-28 points; UConn has three starters back from 14-18 team that cost Kevin Ollie has job. Last three years, ACC teams are 12-8 vs spread when playing an AAC opponent.

Iowa scored 85 ppg in beating couple of stiffs to start season; Hawkeyes outscored Green Bay 34-11 on foul line in 93-82 home win Sunday. Iowa has all five starters back from 14-19 team that went 4-14 in Big 14.
