    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

QB’s who’ve thrown the most pick 6’s in their careers:

    31— Brett Favre

    28— Dan Marino

    27— Drew Brees, Peyton Manning

    23— Philip Rivers, Vinny Testaverde

    22— Eli Manning, Carson Palmer

    20— Kerry Collins, Steve DeBerg

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

    13) ESPN’s Mark Jackson is much better as an analyst in a 2-man booth than a 3-man booth; he tells some terrific stories when he has more airtime.

In 1986, Jackson led the nation in assists; one of his teammates (Walter Berry) won the Wooden Award, symbolic of the year’s best college player, so obviously St John’s must’ve had a damn good season (they went 31-5), but this was the year after Chris Mullin went to the NBA and apparently there were internal issues with the team.

In their fifth game of the year, St John’s was nursing a late lead and Jackson was dribbling so he would get fouled, make foul shots and preserve the lead, but Berry wanted the team to give the ball to him so he could score more, and from that point on, from the end of the fifth game to the 36th game, Berry and Jackson never spoke again that season. You just never know.

    12) Monday night, Enes Kanter had 23 points, 24 rebounds off the bench for the Knicks, as well as seven assists. Kanter is the first NBA player since Charles Barkley in 1986 to have a 20-20 game, and also have 5+ assists, in a game he didn’t start.

    11) In the Atlanta Hawks’ arena, you can get your haircut during the game. Not sure why you would pay major bucks to watch an NBA game, then spend even more money to not watch the game while they cut your hair. Then again, I don’t have much hair to cut.

    10) Speaking of the Hawks, Atlanta coach Lloyd Pierce was a college teammate of Steve Nash in his playing days at Santa Clara.

    9) Kansas City Chiefs outscored opponents 93-20 on the first drive of each half; thats 18 drives for each team.

    8) Miami Dolphins are only NFL team that hasn’t scored a point on their first drive of a game this season: nine drives, 42 plays, 198 yards, no points. No bueno.

Jets kicked only one FG on their first drive of a game, but they also gave up a defensive TD, so they’ve actually been outscored 7-3 on their game-opening drives.

    7) Minnesota Vikings are playing better recently; in their last three games, the Vikings scored TD’s on their first drive of the game, going 68-91-65 yards for those TD’s.

    6) Rich Gannon was working the Charger-Seahawk game Sunday; Sebastian Janikowski was kicking for Seattle. Way back in 2000, Janikowski’s rookie year in Oakland, Gannon was the first holder Janikowski had during preseason, but Gannon said he was so bad at holding, they told him to forget about it and make punter Shane Lechler the holder.

    5) Boise State is a home underdog to Fresno State tonight, first time the Broncos have been a underdog on the Blue Turf since 1999.

    4) Pittsburgh Steelers are only team in NFL with only one divisional game left. Everyone plays a divisional game in Week 17.

    3) Last time Alabama had a Senatorial election, Nick Saban got 19,000 write-in votes. If he ever somehow got elected, Saban would have to decline; quite a pay cut from the $8M a year Saban makes now to the $175,000 or however much a senator makes.

    2) How would you like to be the person who ran for assembly in Nevada, and lost to a dead guy?

72-year old Dennis Hof owned a brothel that was featured on the HBO show Cathouse; he passed away October 16, but he still won an election Tuesday in Nevada’s 36th Assembly District against Democratic educator Lesia Romanov.

    1) Le’Veon Bell posted a couple of Tweets this week with the text upside down; not sure how or why he did that, but it does look pretty cool.

If Bell doesn’t report to the Steelers by 4:00 Tuesday, he can’t play this year, so he won’t make any of his $14.55M salary and he defeats the purpose of his holdout. Hopefully he is getting good advice, but that doesn’t seem too likely, unless he just doesn’t want to play anymore.

            Friday's Tip Sheet
            Kevin Rogers

Game of the Night: Hornets at 76ers – 7:05 PM EST

Philadelphia (7-5 SU, 5-7 ATS) finally broke through on the road after starting the season at 0-5 away from Wells Fargo Center. The 76ers pulled away from the Pacers on Wednesday as three-point underdogs, 100-94, led by Joel Embiid’s 20-point, 10-rebound performance. Philadelphia’s defense limited Indiana to 39% shooting from the floor, while the 76ers also picked up their first away cover in six tries.

The 76ers welcome in the Hornets (6-5 SU, 7-4 ATS), who are coming off a 3-1 homestand after beating the Heat, Cavaliers, and Hawks by double-digits. Charlotte is riding a three-game UNDER streak, while putting together two of its best defensive performances by allowing a total of 196 points against Cleveland and Atlanta, even though those teams have combined for four wins. The Hornets embark on a three-game road trip, which continues to Detroit on Sunday and Cleveland on Tuesday.

Dating back to January 2017, the 76ers have captured seven consecutive meetings with the Hornets, including a 105-103 triumph in Philadelphia on October 27. The Hornets managed a cover as 6 ½-point underdogs, as Kemba Walker put up 37 points in spite of shooting 11-of-31 from the floor and 3-of-15 from long distance. Both teams converted 38% of its field goal attempts, while the game easily finished UNDER the total of 232.

            Luck of the Celtics

Boston (7-4 SU, 4-7 ATS) traveled on Phoenix on Thursday night looking to snap a two-game skid after losing the first two games of its road trip at Indiana and Denver. Things didn’t look good early for the C’s, who trailed the 2-8 Suns by 20 at halftime. However, Boston rallied back to force overtime and eventually knocked off Phoenix, 116-109. The Celtics failed to cover as heavy 9 ½-point road favorites, but were led by Kyrie Irving’s 39 points, while Marcus Morris drilled a three-pointer late in regulation to force overtime.

The Celtics travel to Salt Lake City tonight with no rest in Gordon Hayward’s much-anticipated return to Utah. Hayward missed last season’s matchup with the Jazz (5-6 SU, 5-6 ATS) due to a broken leg suffered in the opening minutes of the first game of the season at Cleveland. Utah finally broke through at home on Wednesday as the Jazz routed the Mavericks, 117-102 for their first win at Vivint Smart Home Arena in five tries this season.

Last season, the road team won each time as the Celtics came back to beat the Jazz in Salt Lake City, 97-94 as 10 ½-point underdogs without Irving, Hayward, and Al Horford. The Celtics own a 2-5 ATS mark away from TD Garden this season, while winning in their only opportunity with no rest in a two-point victory at New York on October 20.

            Eight is Enough?

The Timberwolves (4-8 SU, 5-7 ATS) are one of four teams without a road victory in the NBA this season. The other three teams are likely not headed to the playoffs (Cavaliers, Mavericks, Suns), while Minnesota owns the most road defeats with seven. The latest highway debacle came in Wednesday’s 114-110 setback against the Lakers, although Minnesota came through with a slight cover as 5 ½-point underdogs. Each of Minnesota’s last five road games have finished UNDER the total, while the Wolves have now lost three road games by four points each.

The final stop on this five-game road trip for Minnesota takes place in Sacramento to face the surprising Kings (6-5 SU, 7-4 ATS). Sacramento jumped out to a 6-3 record, but the Kings have gone backwards the last two games in losses to two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference (Milwaukee and Toronto). The young duo of Buddy Hield and Willie Cauley-Stein each put up 24 points against the Raptors, but the Kings failed to cover at home for the first time in four tries this season.

Last season, Minnesota won all three matchups with Sacramento, including an 18-point triumph at Golden 1 Center. All three games sailed OVER the total, but the Kings have been a solid UNDER team at home this season by hitting the UNDER in each of the last three at Golden 1 Center.

            No Offense, But…

The Pacers (7-5 SU, 6-6 ATS) have struggled to score recently as Indiana failed to reach triple-figures in home losses to Houston and Philadelphia. In fact, the Pacers haven’t busted the 108-point mark in six straight games, while finishing UNDER the total five times in this span. The only positive for Indiana is the Pacers have won four consecutive games away from Bankers Life Fieldhouse as they travel to Miami tonight.

The Heat (5-5 SU, 5-5 ATS) have been the model of inconsistency as Miami is seeking its first three-game winning streak this season. Following a three-game skid, the Heat are coming off back-to-back wins over the Pistons and Spurs, while limiting San Antonio to 33% shooting from the floor in Wednesday’s 95-88 home victory. The Heat and Pacers split four regular season meetings last season, as all four matchups cashed the OVER.

            Back on Track

The Pistons (5-5 SU, 4-6 ATS) began the season with a surprising 4-0 start, but eventually dropped five straight games. Two of those defeats came in overtime, but Detroit rebounded with a strong fourth quarter in Wednesday’s 103-96 triumph at Orlando as three-point favorites. Andre Drummond paced the Pistons with 23 points and 19 rebounds, while Blake Griffin posted 20 points to give Detroit its fourth win against a team sitting below the .500 mark.

Detroit faces another such opponent tonight with a trip to Atlanta to face the struggling Hawks (3-8 SU, 4-7 ATS). Atlanta fell to New York on Wednesday, 112-107 as the Knicks outscored the Hawks, 35-18 in the third quarter to erase a three-point halftime deficit. Rookie Trae Young scored in double-figures for the 11th time in 11 games as the former Oklahoma standout scored 15 points, but failed to post a double-double for the fourth straight game.

                  Rebounds galore

Southeast Division rivals meet as the Washington Wizards travel to Orlando to take on the Magic. Both teams are off to rough starts as the Wizards have lost 8 of their first 10 games and have surrendered a league high 120.5 points per game. Problems in Orlando are similar as they have lost 7 of their first 11 games and are only managing to score 101.3 points per contest.

One of Washington’s biggest problems have been rebounding on both the offensive and defensive ends. They rank second last in the Association with 48.4 total per game. Opponents are managing 12.9 offensive rebounds and 38.3 combined offensive and defensive. Allowing for second chance opportunities have been a huge issue for the Wizards all year.

Orlando center Nikola Vucevic enters the contest as the Magic’s leading scorer averaging a double double with 17.5 points per game and 10.4 rebounds. The Wizards have had huge problems with the center position allowing them to score an average of 24 points per game, shoot 57.5 percent from the field, and total 16.9 rebounds per game. Take Vucevic’s points, rebounds, and assists total over 27.5.
                  Pistons positional success

The Pistons finally managed to snap a five-game losing streak on Wednesday night in Orlando. Today, they travel to Atlanta to take on the 3-8 Hawks who are losers of six of their last seven games.

The Pistons have been led by Blake Griffin’s 27.3 points per game, and as a team are scoring an average of 109.4 points and shooting 42.5 percent from the field. The Hawks enter with similar offensive numbers, but a more balanced scoring attack led by rookie Trae Young’s 18.6 points per game. As a team, they are scoring 109.6, but surrendering 118.8.

Atlanta has been the worst team in the Association at defending the opposing shooting guard. They allow the most points in the Association averaging 29.1 points per game on 48.4 shooting. They have also been burned by the long ball, allowing an average of 4.3 makes per game. Although Pistons’ shooting guard Reggie Jackson’s minutes have all over the place, he’s been efficient from the floor and isn’t afraid to take a shot, averaging 14.2 attempts per game. Take Over his points total of 16.5.

                  Short handed Heat

The Pacers look for a victory after splitting their last six games. They are averaging 105.6 points on 48 percent shooting and allow only 102.1 points on 43.8 percent shooting. Today, they travel to Miami to take on the Heat who look to get above .500. The Heat average 111.5 points on 43.6 percent shooting and allow for 110.1 points on 43.9 percent shooting.

The Heat are coming off a dominating performance by center Hassan Whiteside who just missed out on a triple double in their most recent win Wednesday night versus the Spurs posting 29 points, 20 rebounds, and 9 blocks. The Heat led comfortably the whole game and did so without starting point guard Goran Dragic and shooting guard Dwyane Wade.

Today once again the Heat will be without Dragic and Wade and small forward James Johnson is questionable for the matchup. Miami had luck playing short handed on Wednesday with a solid defensive showing, but the Spurs just couldn’t buy a basket shooting 33 percent from the floor. Take the Pacers team total Over 105.5 as 4 of their last 5 games meetings between these two have gone Over the total.

                  No lead is ever safe

The Celtics have won five of their last seven games and are scoring 104.2 points on 43 percent shooting. Today, they travel to Utah to take on the Jazz who search for another win after losing four of their last five games. They average 110.5 points per game on 46.3 percent shooting.

Boston will be playing on back-to-back nights and cutting a 22-point deficit late to take the game into overtime where they won convincingly in the extra minutes. Despite the Celtics going 5-2 SU over their last five road games in Utah, they have had their fair share of road issues. Although they have won four of their last six road games, they have gone 5-13 SU over their last 18 road games. Fatigue could end up playing a huge issue late, or the rally win could be used as motivation, that along with getting a win for Gordon Hayward who will be back in Utah for the first time since leaving via free agency. I’ll bank on it being the latter and take the Celtics and the six points.

                  New look King’s team

The Minnesota Timberwolves travel to Sacramento to take on the Kings at Golden 1 Center. The Timberwolves have struggled recently losing six of their last eight games, and four straight. They are still led by Jimmy Butler’s 22.2 points per game, but Derrick Rose has been the real MVP as of late.

The Sacramento Kings have lost two straight since going on a five-game winning streak and hope to avoid a third straight loss. With two recent losses to the Bucks and Raptors snapping their streak, the Kings’ might be better than given credit for and could very well be on their way to restarting a winning streak.

Minnesota obviously is the far more talented team here, but they are only 9-23 ATS over their last 32 road games and 0-5 SU on the road over their last five. Minnesota have gone 4-1 SU over their last five meetings when playing the Kings, however this is a new look Kings’ team that really has shown no problems putting points on the board averaging 117.5 points per contest. There’s no reason to think the Kings can’t get the job done today. Take the free bucket (+3.5) for a team that’s been much more consistent this year and back Sacramento.
