Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Some college hoop players on the shelf to start the season:

— USC – Elijah Weaver (ankle) out 2-3 weeks.

— BYU – Nick Emery (NCAA) suspended for nine games.

— Gonzaga – Killian Tillie (stress fracture in ankle) out eight weeks.

— Western Kentucky – Lamonte Bearden (academics) out until mid-December.

— Auburn – Austin Wiley (foot) will miss the season-opener. Danjel Purifoy (NCAA) will miss the first nine games.

— Baylor – Mario Kegler (suspended) for six games for violation of team rules. Makai Mason (ankle) questionable for season-opener.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Wrapping up Opening Night in college hoop

13) Kansas 92, Michigan State 87— Jayhawks led this game the whole way, were up 50-36 at halftime, but Spartans fought back late and made the Kansas fans sweat.

Dick Vitale started his 40th season on ESPN with this game; he surprised me by saying that he thinks college basketball season starts too early, and shouldn’t begin until after Thanksgiving Day. Don’t think I agree with that; after Thanksgiving would be too late.

I liked the early season basketball marathon ESPN used to run for 24 hours, but they’ve done away with it now. That would’ve been early next week. Who needs sleep?

12) Duke 118, Kentucky 84— Blue Devils led this game 34-13 at one point, and then it got worse; impressive display by a very young Duke team- game was 59-42 at halftime, 85-52 with 12:22 left. Wildcats don’t get whacked like that very often.

11) Texas Southern 72, Baylor 69— When you pay an opponent to come to your gym and play, they’re not supposed to win. Last year, Texas Southern played its first 13 games on the road- their first home game was New Year’s Day. TSU started last year 0-13, lost by 31 at Baylor, but the Jonny Jones era gets off to an excellent start here.

10) Arizona State 102, Cal State-Fullerton 94 2OT— Titans made NCAAs LY but weren’t given a big chance here; Ahmad/Allman combined for 64 points, but no other Titan scored more than 11 points- they’ll need a third scorer to emerge.

ASU was only 26-44 on foul line; they took 18 more FT’s than Fullerton.

9) North Carolina 78, Wofford 67— This game was tied 46-all with 10:30 left, but reality set in down the stretch. Credit to Roy Williams for going to Wofford’s gym and playing a real road game— it’ll make the Tar Heels better. Wofford has to be encouraged by this game.

More teams need to have some guts and play some true road games.

8) Georgia State 74, East Tennessee State 68— Couple of solid mid-majors hooked up here; ETSU had 27 offensive rebounds, but were just 4-23 on arc, 17-27 on charity stripe. Four Georgia State starters played 35:00+, so not a lot of depth there.

7) Bills-Jets total this week is 36.5; it is the lowest NFL total since 2012.

6) Penn 72, George Mason 71— Quakers win a nail biter despite going 6-18 on the foul line.

5) Stony Brook 77, George Washington 74 OT— GW led this game 22-0 but lost; not exactly the best way to start your season. Stony Brook’s first points came 10:14 into the game; they were only 6-26 on arc, 17-27 on foul line, but they out-rebounded the Colonials 46-38, who were 16-34 on the foul line in at overtime loss.

4) Providence 77, Siena 67— Friars made 13-25 on arc, Saints 12-28 in relatively foul-free game; only 20 FT’s were tried in this game. Siena started a soph and two frosh in coach Christian’s Siena debut; they have to be somewhat encouraged by this game.

3) There are now 353 Division I basketball teams; Cal Baptist (WAC) and North Alabama (Atlantic Sun) are the two new teams this season.

2) Boston College 73, Milwaukee 53— BC was down 10 at the half in this game; they outscored the Panthers 46-16 in second half.

1) Louisiana Tech 71, Wichita State 58— Could be more of a rebuilding job than people thought for the Wheatshockers- they were a 10-point favorite here.

Game of the Night: Raptors at Kings – 10:05 PM EST

When the schedule was released three months ago, it would have been hard for the public to circle this game as one to keep an eye out for. However, Toronto (10-1 SU, 6-5 ATS) owns the best record in the Eastern Conference and Sacramento (6-4 SU, 7-3 ATS) is one of the biggest surprises in the league through 10 games.

The Raptors finish off a four-game western road swing after beating the Suns, Lakers, and Jazz. The last two victories came without the services of leading scorer Kawhi Leonard, who is sidelined with a left ankle injury. Toronto has won three of four games without Leonard, while scoring 117, 121, and 124 points in road wins at Washington, Phoenix, and Los Angeles respectively. In Monday’s 124-111 triumph over the struggling Jazz, Toronto used balanced scoring (four players putting up either 16 or 17 points), while the team shot 57% from the floor.

Sacramento started the season at 1-3 as it looked like another year staring at the lottery. However, the Kings rebounded by winning five straight games, including back-to-back home underdog victories against Memphis and Washington. The Kings continued their hot ways on the road with solid showings in underdog wins at Miami and Orlando prior to blowing out Atlanta by 31 points. Sacramento’s road trip came to a screeching halt in a 144-109 setback at Milwaukee on Sunday, but own a perfect 5-0 ATS record as an underdog of nine points or fewer this season.

The Kings begin a four-game homestand that continues with the Wolves, Lakers, and Spurs invading Golden 1 Center over the next week. Sacramento swept Toronto in both 2016 and 2017 seasons, but the Raptors picked up a pair of 15-point wins over the Kings last season, while covering each time.

(Next) Beasts of the East?

The Celtics and Raptors are currently the two teams favored to win the Eastern Conference. Amongst the next tier of teams that are likely to qualify for the second round of the playoffs are the 76ers and Pacers. Philadelphia (6-5 SU, 7-4 ATS) travels to Bankers Life Fieldhouse seeking its first road win of the season after starting 0-5 away from the City of Brotherly Love. To make matters worse, the Sixers have yet to cover a road contest, while dropping a 25-point decision at Brooklyn on Sunday as four-point favorites.

The Pacers (7-4 SU, 6-5 ATS) couldn’t quite capitalize off their dramatic victory over Boston in Monday’s home affair against Houston. The Rockets pulled away from the Pacers in the fourth quarter of a 98-94 defeat, the third time this season that Indiana has scored below 94 points in a game. Indiana has yet to drop consecutive games this season by going 3-0 SU/ATS off a defeat, while seeing the UNDER cash in four of five games at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Turn the Music Up

The Jazz (4-6 SU, 4-6 ATS) have yet to win a game at Vivint Smart Home Arena this season, posting an 0-4 SU/ATS mark at home. Utah will try to end this dubious mark tonight against Dallas, as the Jazz are coming off a 13-point loss to the red-hot Raptors on Monday. Leading scorer Donovan Mitchell is expected to return tonight for the Jazz after missing Monday with an ankle injury.

Utah and Dallas are meeting up for the second time this season after the Jazz knocked off the Mavericks at American Airlines Center on October 28 as 4 ½-point favorites, 113-104. That loss for the Mavs (3-7 SU, 6-4 ATS) was part of a six-game slide that eventually ended in last night’s 119-100 home blowout of the slumping Wizards. Dallas has competed well in the role of a road underdog this season by going 3-0 ATS, as the Mavs covered in losses to the Raptors, Spurs, and Lakers.

The Butler Did It

Yes, Jimmy Butler played a game for the Timberwolves recently. The disgruntled swingman scored 20 points in Monday’s loss to the Clippers, as Minnesota is being careful with Butler, who it has been looking to trade. The Wolves (4-7 SU, 4-7 ATS) seek their first road win tonight as they remain in Los Angeles to face the Lakers. Minnesota is 0-6 away from Target Center, but edged Los Angeles on October 29 as 1 ½-point underdogs, 124-120.

The Lakers (4-6 SU, 3-7 ATS) have started slowly with LeBron James wearing Purple and Gold, which includes a 1-4 ATS mark the last five games. L.A. has covered one game at Staples Center in five opportunities, which coincidentally came in a seven-point win over Denver, handing the Nuggets their lone loss on the season. Since going OVER the total against Minnesota, the Lakers have hit the UNDER in three straight games, all with totals of 234 ½ and higher as tonight’s total sits at 236 ½.

Scratching Back Home

The Grizzlies (5-4 SU, 5-4 ATS) head back to FedEx Forum after dropping the final two games of their three-game road trip at Phoenix and Golden State. Memphis was tied with the defending champions at halftime on Monday, but the Warriors outscored the Grizzlies, 34-15 in the third quarter and picked up a cover as 14-point favorites in a 117-101 win. The Grizzlies have been solid at home so far by going 3-0 SU/ATS, but are listed as ‘dogs at FedEx for the first time this season.

The Nuggets (9-1 SU, 7-3 ATS) keep rolling after rallying past the Celtics on Monday, 115-107, led by Jamal Murray’s 48 points. Denver is riding a five-game winning streak, while owning a 4-1 ATS mark as a favorite of five points or less. The Nuggets captured three of four meetings from the Grizzlies last season, but Memphis cashed in both opportunities as a home underdog, while all four matchups finished UNDER the total.

SNAPPING A SKID

The 4-5 Pistons are hoping to snap a five-game losing streak as they travel to Orlando to take on the 4-6 Magic. The Pistons enter averaging 110.1 points on 42.7 percent shooting. Defensively they are allowing opponents to shoot 46 percent from the floor and score 113 points.

The Magic have lost six of their last nine games and enter scoring 101.8 points on 42.6 percent shooting. They allow 110.5 points per game on average on 46.9 percent shooting.

The Pistons have done well on the road thus far going 8-3 ATS and should be able to find success for a Magic team who have struggled at home posting an 0-5 ATS record. Despite Detroit’s struggles in Orlando and have gone 0-6 ATS in their last six meetings in Orlando, and 1-5 SU they are the much better team and should be able to snap their losing streak. Lay the 2 points with the Pistons.

INJURIES GALORE

The Spurs have gotten out of the gate quickly winning six of their first nine games. They are averaging 113.4 points per game on 46.2 percent shooting and have been led by their offseason pickup of DeMar DeRozan with 27.3 points per game. Today they travel to Miami to take on a 4-5 Heat team averaging 113.3 points per game on 44.2 percent shooting and surrendering 112.6 points per contest. They are led by Josh Richardson’s career year averaging 21.4 points per game.

Injuries are a big thing to pay attention to for this contest with Spur’s center Pau Gasol out with a foot injury, and small forward Rudy Gay sitting out as well. The Heat will be without shooting Guard Dwyane Wade for personal reasons, shooting guard Dion Waiters will sit out another game, and might be joined by small forward James Johnson, and point guard Goran Dragic who is questionable with a toe injury. Center Hassan Whiteside is expected to play but is battling a knee injury which kept him out of last game.

DEFENSIVE PRIORITY

The Denver Nuggets hope to extend their five game overall winning streak as they travel to Memphis to take on the Grizzlies at FedEx Forum. Denver have been efficient offensively led by Jamal Murray’s 18.9 points per game. They are averaging 111.8 points on 46.5 percent shooting as a team, and defensively have surrendered 102.4 points on 45.3 percent shooting.

The Grizzlies have split their last six meetings and enter averaging 103.7 points on 44.9 percent shooting. Defensively opponents are getting away good shots shooting 46.8 percent from the floor, but only managing to score 102.1 points per game. They are led by Mike Conley’s 18.1 points and 5.8 assists. They are a perfect 3-0 at home this season.

Both teams rank towards the bottom of the Association in possessions per game. Memphis is dead last with 99.3, and the Nuggets very surprisingly are 24th with 102.8. The Nuggets are very effective with the possessions they do have as shown by their points per game and shooting percentage, however the game pace does not project to be a very fast one.

With Denver only managing to shoot 32.7 percent from deep, and scoring 56.6 games in the paint, they may struggle inside versus a Grizzlies team that’s allowing only 41.1 points inside the paint and an exceptionally low 31.3 points inside the paint over their last three. Look into the Under 205 total points.

JAZZ NOT IN RHYTHEM

The 3-7 Dallas Mavericks travel to Utah to take on a 4-6 Jazz team. Dallas have only managed to win one of their last seven games and need to be far better defensively if they want to improve on their record as they are allowing 115.1 points per game on 49.3 percent shooting from the floor and an abysmal 43.3 percent from beyond the arc. Unfortunately, they have also struggled on the road this season posting a 0-5 record.

The Mavericks have gone 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games versus the Northwest and have posted a 1-4 ATS record over their last back-to-back games. Similarity to the Mavericks, the Jazz have also struggled playing in games with minimal rest (1 day), going 3-7 over their last 10. They are 1-6 ATS in their last seven home games and 0-4 ATS over their last four overall. The Mavericks are 0-5 over their last five on the road but have posted a 6-3 record ATS over their last nine in Utah.

With Donovan Mitchell not nearly healthy enough and the Jazz struggling to put up points especially over their last three averaging 99.7, laying 9.5-points is a lot for a team that has not been efficient as of late. Dallas has been able to score points, and cover spreads. Take them to keep it close and grab the 9.5 points as the Jazz have covered six of their first 10 on the road.

DESPERATION MODE

The Timberwolves travel to Los Angeles to take on a Lakers team which have struggled to get things going. Minnesota have lost five of their last seven, and three straight. Los Angeles have won four of their first 10 and are coming off an embarrassing blowout loss to the short-handed Raptors Sunday night in a 121-107 contest where they allowed Toronto to score 42 points in the first quarter.

Minnesota has not been a good road team posting an 8-23 record ATS over their last 31 and are not helped by the Jimmy Butler drama. Despite their poor record they have gone 5-0 SU versus the Lakers over their last five, but only 5-18 SU over their last 23 games playing in Los Angeles. The Over has hit in 10 of their last 13 meetings, and six of the last eight when these two teams meet at Staples Center

You never know which team is going to show up in the Timberwolves, and the Lakers desperately need to put forth a good game coming off their worst loss of the season. Points should be easy to come by in this contest. Look into taking the Lakers’ Brandon Ingram Over 21.5 points, rebounds, and assists as he’s coming off a great shooting performance in their last game versus the Timberwolves where he put up a season high 24 points on 9 of 18 shooting, 3 of 5 from beyond the arc and contributed with five rebounds and two assists.
