            *******************************

            Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday……

            13) Duke 77, Central Florida 76— When you lose a game like this and your season or career end, you will remember that game for the rest of your life. UCF played its hearts out, the game was there for them to take but it slipped away. Their effort was exceptional.

Duke was 309th in country in 3-point %age before this game; they made 10-25 Sunday, and scored off a missed free throw with 0:09 left to win this interesting game.

Aubrey Dawkins scored 32 points for UCF; this game had to be personal for him, living in Durham until he was 11 years old when his father was an assistant coach at Duke. He played at Michigan, then UCF; he was excellent in this game.

            12) Tennessee 83, Iowa 77 OT— Volunteers led this game 44-19, so if you laid eight points, this was a sad ending. If you had the under, this was a sad ending. If you had Iowa and the over, then be thankful. Tennessee survived and it advances, and that is all that matters this time of year.

For the first time since 1996 the SEC has four teams in the Sweet 16. Tennessee has zero points this season from freshmen, which in modern times is really unusual.

CBS had the father of one of the Iowa players miked during this game; this is a bad idea. Parents should be seen and not heard during these games. Let the kids be the show.

            11) North Carolina 81, Washington 59— Tar Heels are in Sweet 16 for 4th time in five years; this wasn’t a good game. Huskies shot 36.7% from the floor.

Washington is 48-21 in Mike Hopkins’ first two years as coach, so things are looking up for them, though they graduate three starters this spring.

            10) Texas Tech 78, Buffalo 58— Bulls hadn’t lost since February 1st; over last six years, they’re 138-62, 75-31 in MAC games. Five of their top seven players graduate; will coach Nate Oats leave for green$r pa$ture$? Now would be a good time.

Texas Tech moves on to Anaheim, will play Michigan in the next round.

            9) Virginia Tech 67, Liberty 58— Hokies beat Duke 77-72 at home Feb 26; now they get another shot at the Blue Devils Friday night in Washington. Justin Robinson played 29:00 Sunday, so his foot must be OK. He looked a little gimpy late in Friday’s game.

Liberty has a 5-9 freshman named Darius McGhee who played 27:00, and was 5-11 from floor, all 3-pointers, with no assists. Sounds like a good gig, take a 3-pointer every 2:00 or so.

            8) Virginia 63, Oklahoma 51—Starting center Jack Salt isn’t playing much; he has back/ankle issues. Cavaliers are basically playing six guys; Kyle Guy was 0-10 on the arc in this game but Virginia still covered a double digit spread.

Oklahoma finished 20-14 this year, after going 18-14 LY, when they had Trae Young. Go figure.

            7) Houston 74, Ohio State 59— Cougars move on and play Kentucky Friday in Kansas City. Indiana fans who might be watching will be conflicted; they didn’t like Kelvin Sampson much when he was coach of the Hoosiers, but they really dislike Kentucky.

            6) Oregon 73, Cal-Irvine 54— Ducks are in Sweet 16 for third time in last four years; they missed their first ten shots of 2nd half as Irvine came back from down 12 at the half to the game, but Oregon pulled away late. Kenny Wooten had seven blocks; he is a force in the paint.

            5) Coaching carousel:
            — Ron Hunter bolts Georgia State for Tulane. Interesting decision; his Georgia State team would’ve clobbered Tulane this year, but AAC is a step up from the Sun Belt.
            — California fires Wyking Jones; Cal alum Jason Kidd is a possible replacement.

            4) Bryce Harper is from Las Vegas and goes to some UNLV basketball games in the winter; he has posted stuff on social media imploring UNLV to hire Memphis assistant coach Mike Miller as its new basketball coach.

            3) Two baseball players have had ten seasons with 20+ homers and 20+ stolen bases; they are father/son, Bobby and Barry Bonds. Bobby Abreu is next, with nine.

            2) They had 38,031 fans in Anaheim Stadium Sunday night for Dodgers-Angels exhibition game; they drew 23,967 in Oakland for a Giants-A’s game. Baseball season starts Thursday; we’ll have information every day from then until October.

Russell Martin caught all eight innings for the Dodgers, which is really unusual for a spring training game.

            1) Cubs-Colorado exhibition game drew 14,022 fans Saturday night in Arizona. These games are more affordable and to lot of people, their best chance to see big league baseball.

            • Monday's Tip Sheet
              March 24, 2019
              By David Schwab

The remaining 16 teams in this year’s NCAA Tournament will be back in action later this week. However, Monday night’s college basketball betting board is highlighted by a trio of matchups in two other postseason tournaments.

Starting in the NIT, the Norfolk State Spartans will be on the road against the Colorado Buffaloes. Over in the CBI, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers head to West Virginia to face the Mountaineers and the Brown Bears will be on the West Coast against Loyola Marymount Lions.

              Opening Odds per BetOnline.ag

              NIT

No. 8 Norfolk State Spartans at No. 4 Colorado Buffaloes (9 p.m. ET)

              Opening Odds: Colorado -14 ½, 147

              Betting Matchup

The Spartans stunned top-seeded Alabama 80-79 in overtime in the opening round of their NIT bracket. They closed as 16-point underdogs, but this was just the second time they covered against the spread in their last six games. The total has gone OVER in four of those six contests. Norfolk State plays out of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference where it went 14-2 straight-up to win the regular season title. It lost to North Carolina Central 50-47 as a 4 ½-point favorite in the conference tournament.

Colorado went 22-12 SU this season with a 10-8 record in Pac-12 play. It came up short against Washington 66-61 as a three-point underdog in the conference tournament after knocking off Oregon State 73-58 as a 2 ½-point underdog. The Buffaloes opened play in the NIT by beating Dayton 78-73 to cover as 4 ½-point favorites. They are 5-2 ATS over their past seven games with the total staying UNDER in five of those outing. Colorado’s Tyler Bey scored 14 points with 12 rebounds to pace the win in the opening round.

              Betting Trends

-- The Spartans are 5-1 ATS in their last six games played on Monday with the total going OVER in 15 of their last 20 games following a SU win.

-- The Buffaloes have a 7-1 record ATS in their last eight home games and the total has stayed UNDER in six of their last seven nonconference games.

              CBI

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers at West Virginia Mountaineers (7 p.m. ET)

              Opening Odds: West Virginia -9, 157 ½

              Betting Matchup

As members of the Sun Belt Conference, the Chanticleers made their way to the quarterfinals of the CBI with an 81-72 victory against Howard last Wednesday as 11-point favorites. They have failed to cover the closing number in four of their last six games with the total staying UNDER in four of those games. They are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games. Coastal Carolina got a strong effort from Tyrell Gumbs-Frater in Wednesday’s win with 22 points. The team averaged 76.4 points a game in the regular season while allowing 73.0 points on defense.

West Virginia went 15-20 SU this season with a 4-14 record in Big 12 play. As the No. 10 seed in a ten-team tournament, the Mountaineers made some early noise by beating Oklahoma 72-71 as 6 ½-point underdogs ahead of their stunning 79-74 shocker over No. 1 seed Texas Tech as 13-point underdogs. The ride came to an end with a 88-74 loss to Kansas as 9 ½-point underdogs. West Virginia beat Grand Canyon 77-63 in the CBI opener as a 5 ½-point favorite. Jermaine Haley scored 24 points in last Wednesday’s win.

              Betting Trends

-- The Chanticleers have gone 5-0-1 ATS in their last six Monday games and the total has stayed UNDER in five of their last seven games on the road.

-- The Mountaineers are 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven nonconference games. The total has gone OVER in their last four games following a SU win.

Brown Bears at Loyola Marymount Lions (10 p.m. ET)

              Opening Odds: Loyola Marymount -4 ½, 137 ½

              Betting Matchup

The Bears failed to qualify for the four-team Ivy League Tournament with a 58-51 loss to Penn in their regular season finale as six-point road underdogs. They were 7-7 SU in league play as part of a 19-11 record overall. In their opening effort in this tournament, they beat UAB 83-78 as slight one-point home favorites. Brown is 3-1 ATS in its last four games with the total staying UNDER in three of those games. Obi Okolie came away with a career-high 26 points to help the Bears advance to this game.

Playing out of the West Coast Conference, Loyola Marymount made an early exit in the conference tournament with a 68-65 loss to Pepperdine as a 4 ½-point favorite. The Lions drew Cal Baptist in the opening round of the CBI and squeezed out a 56-55 win on the road as two-point favorites. They are 2-4 ATS in their last six games and the total has stayed UNDER in five of their last seven games. • Early bettors hit Michigan odds for March Madness clash vs. Texas Tech
                      Patrick Everson

Michigan coach John Beilein will have a worthy adversary in Texas Tech's Chris Beard for a Sweet 16 battle Thursday night. The Wolverines opened -1 Sunday evening and were quickly bet up to -2.

Forty-eight teams packed their bags over the past four days of March Madness, leaving only sixteen to play on. Covers checks in on the opening lines, early action and odds movement for a quartet of the Sweet 16’s eight games, with insights from John Murray, director of the SuperBook at Westgate in Las Vegas.

No. 3 Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. No. 2 Michigan Wolverines (-1)

Michigan easily advanced in the Big Dance with a pair of double-digit victories in the West Region. After rolling over No. 15 seed Montana on Thursday, the Wolverines (30-6 SU, 21-15 ATS) dispatched No. 10 seed Florida 65-49 as 5.5-point favorites Saturday.

Likewise, Texas Tech had little trouble reaching the Round of 16, winning and covering in the first and second rounds. The Red Raiders (28-6 SU, 17-16-1 ATS) coasted past No. 14 Northern Kentucky, then punched out No. 6 seed Buffalo 78-58 as 3.5-point faves Sunday.

“I think the best game of (next) weekend is Texas Tech-Michigan,” Murray said of this 9:35 p.m. ET clash on Thursday. “It’s a pick ‘em game to me. Two of the very best coaches in all of college basketball.”

The SuperBook opened the Wolverines at -1 Sunday evening and got to -2 within about an hour.

No. 4 Virginia Tech Hokies vs. No. 1 Duke Blue Devils (-8)

Duke is extremely fortunate to be playing in this 9:35 p.m. ET Friday tipoff in the East Region. On Sunday, the Blue Devils (31-5 SU, 18-17-1 ATS) trailed late against No. 9 seed Central Florida, regained the lead in the waning seconds and survived a jumper and tip-in attempt by UCF to snare a 77-76 win laying 13 points.

Virginia Tech already owns a win over Duke, winning and cashing as a 3.5-point home pup a month ago, though the Blue Devils didn't have Zion Williamson and will have him this time. The Hokies (26-8 SU, 17-15-1 ATS) got a stern test from No. 12 seed Liberty on Sunday, pulling away in the second half for a 67-58 victory giving 9.5 points.

“This will be a heavily bet game for sure. A lot of moneyline parlays with Duke in them next week,” Murray said. “We opened it a little high at -8, because we know Duke money will come. Duke was very lucky to escape (Sunday), and I definitely give the coaching edge to Virginia Tech and Buzz Williams.”

No. 12 Oregon Ducks vs. No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers (-7.5)

Oregon came from the No. 6 seed to win the Pac-12 tournament and now finds itself in the Sweet 16 as a 12 seed in the South Region. The Ducks (24-12 SU, 21-15 ATS) blew all of a 12-point halftime lead plus two Sunday against No. 13 seed UC Irvine, then went nuts over the last 12 minutes to win easily 73-54 as 4.5-point favorites.

Virginia, which as a No. 1 seed last year shockingly got knocked out by No. 16 seed Maryland-Baltimore County, got through the first weekend this time around, though not without incident. The Cavaliers (31-3 SU, 24-10 ATS) trailed No. 16 seed Gardner-Webb 36-30 at half, then clamped down for a 71-56 win as hefty 22.5-point faves Friday.

On Sunday against No. 9 seed Oklahoma, Virginia was up nine at the half and notched a relatively uneventful 63-51 win as 10.5-point chalk.

“Oregon-Virginia is a terrific coaching matchup,” Murray said of Thursday’s 9:55 p.m. ET meeting. “Two great defensive teams. We opened 7.5 and total of 119. I love Dana Altman, and Payton Pritchard is a steady point man, but this should be the end of the road for the Ducks.”

No. 5 Auburn Tigers vs. No. 1 North Carolina Tar Heels (-5.5)

North Carolina got a surprisingly stern test in its Midwest Region opener, then had much less trouble in the second round. The Tar Heels (29-6 SU, 22-11-2 ATS) trailed No. 16 seed Iona 38-33 at recess, then put up 55 second-half points to win 88-73 as healthy 24.5-point favorites Friday. Roy Williams’ troops then blasted No. 9 seed Washington 81-59 giving 11 points Sunday.

Auburn built on its run to the Southeastern Conference tournament title with two more wins, running its win streak to 10 (6-4 ATS). After squeaking past No. 12 seed New Mexico State 78-77 as 5.5-point faves Thursday, the Tigers (28-9 SU, 19-16-1 ATS) rumbled over No. 4 seed Kansas 89-75 laying 2 points Saturday.

“Auburn-North Carolina is the complete opposite of Oregon-Virginia – all offense,” Murray said of this 7:25 p.m. ET Friday matchup. “Two coaches I don’t think much of, to say the least. But that should be a fun watch. We will likely need the Under. The total is sitting at 161 now.”

That’s up a point from the opener of 160, while the line dipped from Tar Heels -5.5 to -5 Sunday evening.
