“It’s a long season. And we’ve been playing a lot of basketball for five years now, so you’re not going to be perfect for 82 games — we’ve had too many missteps — but at the end of the day, that’s the first time we’ve lost to that team in 19 games. So it’s ugly but … I expect our crowd to be little more into it, too. Like, I know it’s not the playoffs, but it is our last go-around at Oracle. Least you can stand up or something when we make a good play, especially in the beginning. We need that energy, especially this time of the year. It’s hard to conjure up energy every single night ’cause you’re looking forward to the playoffs and that run.”

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…..

                    13) ESPN started a new show Monday, from 6-7pm: Daily Wager. It looks pretty good, an information-driven program that follows gambling-related and daily fantasy stuff.

                    12) Phoenix Suns closed as a 17-point underdog against Warriors Sunday night, then won. It is the largest upset in an NBA game since March 6, 2016 when the Lakers upset Golden State as a 17.5-point underdog. Those are the only times in the last 20 years that an underdog of 17+ points won SU.

                    11) Detroit Tigers’ 1B Miguel Cabrera pulled the hidden ball trick on a runner Monday. What do you say to a major leaguer who falls for that?

                    10) Since 2009, when one team beats another twice during the regular season and then meets them again in a conference tournament, they complete the 3-game sweep 72% of the time.

                    9) Toronto Blue Jays used a 4-man outfield against Bryce Harper over the weekend, with no third baseman; will that be a trend this season? Turns out it didn’t matter where the fielders were, since they walked Harper both times he came to bat.

Tampa Bay used the 4-man outfield against Harper on Monday, too.

                    8) After trading Antonio Brown over the weekend, Steelers have a cap hit of $21M for his contract this year, which isn’t good.

Over the last seven years, of the 14 NFL teams that had a WR with a cap hit of $15M+, only one of those 14 teams made the playoffs, the 2016 Falcons, and they at least had Julio Jones on their team that year. Brown is a huge cap hit, and he’s playing for Oakland.

                    7) Detroit Lions signed four players Monday, three of whom are ex-Patriots. Problem is, none of them is Tom Brady, so not sure how much they’ll help.

                    6) OT Trent Brown bolted New England and will sign a four-year, $66M contract that includes $36.75M in guarantees with the Raiders, making him highest paid OL in NFL history.

                    5) Landon Collins signs with the Redskins, gets $84M for six years, $45M of it guaranteed.

                    4) Nick Foles get $88M to QB the Jaguars for four years.

                    3) College basketball teams that have fired their coach:
                    — Fairfield, Niagara in the MAAC
                    — Southern Illinois
                    — SIU-Edwardsville, Tennessee Tech in the OVC
                    — Mercer
                    — Troy State
                    — Kennesaw State, Stetson in the A-Sun
                    — Cal Poly

                    — Temple (technically he is retiring, but they forced him out)

Bottom line on coaches getting fired is this: Bracket Week and the NCAA tournament are great fun for us, but if you’re a coach and you don’t make the NCAA’s, your job is in real jeopardy.

                    2) Duke’s Marques Bolden, averaging 9.5 mpg, is out for the ACC tournament.

                    1) FOX is making a big deal about signing Urban Meyer to its college football coverage, but Meyer has been on TV before, and he wasn’t good. Meyer was humorless doing games on ESPN, I almost felt bad for the guy. Not sure how coaching at Ohio State changed any of that.

                      Who's Hot and Who's Not

                      Week of March 11th

After recent years saw flip-flopping Duke/UNC results prove to be profitable, that wasn't the case this year, as North Carolina covered the spread in both meetings, and the 'under' for both games cashed as well. Both teams have much bigger goals in store for the next few weeks though, and it will be interesting to see which one of them goes down first in the NCAA tournament.

But we've got conference tournaments for all the big conferences on the schedule first as this week is the unofficial beginning to March Madness. NCAA automatic bids are starting to be designated to conference tournament winners, and as precious as they can be to some programs, many of the nation's top programs from these power conferences don't emphasize them as much simply because they'd rather peak at the NCAA's rather than the conference tournament.

So this week it's a big of a history lesson regarding two specific conference tournaments over the years, as it's often been as simple as seeding in terms of knowing what seeds to back or fade during the gauntlet run that is conference championship week.

                      Who's Hot

Backing the Top Two Seeds in the Pac-12 Tournament to win it – Last five years it's been #1 vs #2 in Pac-12 Final

The Pac-12 has dealt with a lot of criticism this year for what's been deemed a “down” year for the conference overall. There have been questions all year about whether or not more than one Pac-12 team will get invited to the NCAA dance, and with regular season champion Washington slumping down the stretch, we may end up only having one program from this conference reach the NCAA's. The good news for Washington Huskies fans in that regard is the fact that each of the past five Pac-12 tournaments, the final has come down to the #1 vs #2 seeds.

Granted the Pac-12 has been more “top heavy” in recent years with the likes of Arizona, Oregon and others having some tremendous years recently, but it would be fitting for a conference that's been filled with parity all year long to conclude yet another year with it's top two teams playing for a berth in the NCAA's.

Top seeded Washington, and #2 seed Arizona State did everything they could to stay close to the rest of the conference this year, and while most brackets have both programs in the NCAA tournament right now, it's far from set in stone. That suggests that the motivation will definitely be there for Washington and/or ASU to go out and try to run the table from here on out, but with the rest of the conference knowing their last shot was in this conference tournament, it's not going to be easy. Heck, #2 Arizona State (+400) isn't even listed as the second favorite to win this tournament, as that honor belongs to #6 Oregon.

Recent history of these #1 vs #2 games in the Pac-12 Tournament Final would suggest there is some value in backing the Sun Devils at that price, but maybe it's best to sit back in the early rounds of this tournament to let the carnage unfold and see who's left standing. If it's Washington and/or Arizona State left, it's those sides you should probably be looking at.

                      Who's Not

Backing the #2 seed in the ACC Tournament to win it – Only Two ACC Tournament Finals appearances (one win) since 2005 (14 years) for #2 seed in ACC Tournament

I hate to be the bearer of bad news to North Carolina Tar Heels fans, but coming into the ACC tournament this year as the #2 seed does note bode well for them to go on and become conference champions this week. That's because since the conference expanded to having at least 10 teams in 2005, the #2 seed in the ACC Tournament has arguably been the best team to fade.

In the 14 ACC Tournaments played since the start of teh 2004-05 season, the #2 seed in the ACC has one tournament win to their credit (Duke over UNC in 2011), and only made the finals one other time (2016). Considering these teams have all the same benefits as the #1, #3, and #4 seeds in terms of rest, to see the #2 seeds fall at this rate is something to make note of.

Furthermore, you'd think it would be easier to stomach for these top teams to say come up short in the semi-finals of the ACC Tournament – after all the top four teams get a bye to the quarters – but in that same 14-year span, the #2 team lost their tournament opener in the quarter-finals a whopping six times. That's the same number of outright defeats they've suffered in the semis in that span.

From a big picture perspective, you can see some logic behind these #2 seeds losing early in that they are almost always a Top 4 seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament and that quickly becomes a bigger priority. Winning a game or two against a league you've already dominated for the bulk of the season isn't that appealing when a National Championship opportunity is right around the corner, and with the lower ACC seeds always looking for that key “resume-building” win at this time of year, these #2 teams tend to also be dealing with their opponent's best shot in these games.

So sorry North Carolina fans, backing your school to win the ACC Tournament this year just has too much history working against it. But don't worry, the news isn't all bad for the Tar Heels if that is indeed the case, as all of UNC's four National Titles in the post-Michael Jordan era have come in a year where they failed to win the ACC Tournament.

                      • Vols stagger into SEC tourney as 3 seed
                        March 11, 2019
                        By The Associated Press

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Tennessee has fallen, but that doesn't mean the Volunteers can't get back up and win the Southeastern Conference Tournament.

Rick Barnes knows what his once top-ranked basketball team needs to do - or not to do.

''Too many turnovers, shot-clock violations, you name it, that led to easy baskets,'' the Volunteers coach said of Tennessee's latest loss. ''That is the learning situation. You would like to think where we are and what we have been through, we wouldn't make those types of mistakes this time of year. But we did.''

The Volunteers squandered an opportunity to earn a share of a second straight SEC title Saturday by blowing an 11-point lead in an 84-80 loss at No. 22 Auburn. No. 9 LSU instead won the SEC championship outright.

Tennessee fell from No. 5 to No. 8 in the Associated Press Top 25 heading into this week's SEC Tournament at Nashville, Tennessee.

The loss dropped Tennessee to the No. 3 seed in the SEC Tournament after the Vols owned at least a share of first place for virtually the entire regular season. The Vols (27-4, 15-3 SEC) have a quarterfinal matchup Friday night against No. 6 seed Mississippi State (22-9, 10-8), No. 11 seed Texas A&M (13-17, 6-12) or No. 14 seed Vanderbilt (9-22, 0-18).

Tennessee hasn't won the SEC Tournament since 1979.

After running off a school-record 19 consecutive victories, Tennessee has gone 4-3 in its last seven games against a backloaded schedule. Six of its final seven games were against teams projected to make the NCAA Tournament.

Tennessee had won three straight before Saturday, but the Vols have fallen into some bad habits that proved costly against Auburn. The most notable problem is an occasional tendency to settle for 3-point shots rather than driving to the basket.

The Vols shot 9 of 28 from 3-point range and 13 of 16 from the free-throw line at Auburn.

Barnes said the problem wasn't limited to the Auburn game with the Vols taking too many 3-pointers in all their losses.

''I can't tell you why because we keep talking about (how) we should know who we are and what we are doing,'' Barnes said. ''I can't explain that. I really can't.''

Tennessee has attempted more 3-point shots than free throws in each of its four losses but in only nine of its 27 wins. In its four losses, Tennessee has been outscored by an average margin of 9.3 points at the free-throw line.

The Volunteers attempted more 3-point shots than free throws in seven of its last eight games overall. During those eight games, Tennessee has averaged 21.8 shots from 3-point range and 14.3 free-throw attempts. Before that stretch, Tennessee had been attempting 18.4 3-point shots and 22.4 free throws per game.

Complicating matters is the fact that one of its top 3-point shooters is slumping.

Jordan Bowden broke out of his recent funk by scoring 16 points and going 3 of 7 from 3-point range against Auburn, but Lamonte' Turner remains in a tailspin.

Turner has gone 6 of 42 on 3-point attempts over his last seven games, including 1 of 15 in his last three games. Turner is shooting 29.5 percent from 3-point range this year, down from 39.9 percent last season.

Barnes said Turner is putting too much pressure on himself to make 3-pointers and is attempting difficult shots. Barnes noted that Turner shouldn't focus on 3-point attempts and cited Tennessee's 73-71 victory at Mississippi, when the junior guard focused on his mid-range game and scored 17 points while shooting 8 of 12 overall and 1 of 4 from beyond the arc.

''He has to recognize that he's such a better basketball player than thinking he has to make a three,'' Barnes said. ''Lamonte' Turner can affect the game in so many ways if he never made a shot. He's become one of the best defensive guards in the country the way he can disrupt a game. The way he's making plays for his teammates, it just gets (hardest) for him when he starts trying to make shots from behind the arc. That's when he doesn't play as well.''

                        • Virginia, UNC, Duke headline ACC field
                          March 11, 2019
                          By The Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) This week's Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament is all about the league's heavyweights.

Second-ranked Virginia and third-ranked North Carolina arrive after sharing the regular-season championship and in pursuit of possible No. 1 seeds for the NCAA Tournament. And then there's fifth-ranked Duke, hoping to get freshman star Zion Williamson back from a knee injury and prove the Blue Devils are again the team that spent a national-best seven weeks atop the AP Top 25 this season.

The five-day tournament begins Tuesday in Charlotte, marking its return to the state of North Carolina after a three-year absence - the longest stretch in the event's 65-year history.

The Cavaliers (28-2, 16-2) are the reigning champion, continuing a sustained run near the top that started in their breakout year under Tony Bennett in 2014. They earned the No. 1 seed by beating the Tar Heels in their only matchup.

Virginia swept the regular-season and tournament titles for the second time under Bennett last season, and suffered its only two losses to the Blue Devils.

''We knew it was going to be a new team,'' guard Ty Jerome said after Saturday's home win against Louisville. ''We knew we were going to have to find different ways to be good, but we probably had even higher expectations and are definitely nowhere near our big goals yet.''

The Tar Heels (26-5, 16-2) have been rolling since mid-January, when they suffered their worst home loss under Roy Williams against Louisville. The 69-61 loss to the Cavaliers on Feb. 11 stands as their only stumble since.

''The one game we lost was to one of the best teams in the country,'' UNC senior Luke Maye said. ''I think that shows a lot of how we fight and how we play and how we know how to win games. I think that's shown a lot of growth for our team and I think we're only going to get better.''

As for the Blue Devils (26-5, 14-4), they've played nearly six full games without Williamson since he went down early in the first of two losses to UNC. Coach Mike Krzyzewski said Williamson got in good practice workouts without contact last week and said that he expected the 6-foot-7, 285-pound national player of the year candidate to start contact work this week.

''They've shown that when they're together, they're very good,'' Krzyzewski said after Saturday's loss to the Tar Heels. ''And we've been good, not real good, without Zion. The kids have fought, but it's inconsistent. It's not at the level that's needed to win a championship.

''If Zion is healthy and whatever, we'll have a chance.''

Some other things to know about this week's ACC Tournament in Charlotte:

                          HOT SEMINOLES

Behind Virginia and UNC, No. 12 Florida State has been the league's hottest team. Leonard Hamilton's Seminoles (25-6) have won 12 of 13 games with the only loss coming at North Carolina on Feb. 23. FSU claimed the last double-round bye into Thursday's quarterfinals.

                          BANGED-UP HOKIES

No. 16 Virginia Tech (23-7) has had to grind it out with point guard Justin Robinson sidelined with a foot injury since late January. Things likely won't get easier this week, with coach Buzz Williams saying after Friday's win against Miami that Robinson won't play in Charlotte. The fifth-seeded Hokies own a bye into Wednesday's second round.

                          BUBBLE BATTLE?

Sixth-seeded Syracuse and seventh-seeded Louisville look solid for NCAA Tournament bids, but Wednesday's second-round game between eighth-seeded North Carolina State and ninth-seeded Clemson could be an elimination game. The Wolfpack won the only meeting in January on Braxton Beverly's last-second 3-pointer.

                          ROUGH OPENING ACT

The ACC opens play with Tuesday's first round with three games featuring the bottom six seeds. None own a winning record.

No. 12 seed Miami and No. 13 seed Wake Forest play the tournament's first game, followed by No. 10 seed Georgia Tech against No. 15 seed Notre Dame. The final game is No. 11 seed Boston College against No. 14 seed Pittsburgh.

The Eagles' 14-16 record is the best of the bunch. Compare that to previous two years, when the first day featured at least three teams with winning records and one NCAA Tournament team each time.

                          INSTATE HISTORY

The tournament has long made North Carolina its home, though that has changed as the league expanded its footprint up the eastern seaboard and grew to 15 teams.

The ACC has held 51 of 65 tournaments in the state where it was founded, the last in 2015 in Greensboro where the league is headquartered. The tournament moved to the nation's capital in Washington in 2016 followed by two years in Brooklyn - marking the first time the ACC Tournament had spent more than a year out of the state of North Carolina.

Each week until March Madness we'll take a look at how the Top 25 fared from college basketball, but straight up and against the number, while also taking a look at their upcoming schedule.

Conference tournaments for some of the smaller leagues have already started, while the big boys get underway in the upcoming week. Selection Sunday is less than a week to go, as March Madness is about to kick off full bore. Some teams are finishing up the regular season strong, while a couple are starting to wilt under the pressure. It looks like it is going to be a wide open NCAA Tournament, and we'll get a much better idea of who the contenders or pretenders are during the conference tournaments.

Marquette (23-8 SU, 18-13 ATS) picked a bad time for their worst basketball of the season. The Golden Eagles are in freefall, dropping four consecutive games, or exactly half of their season's losses since Feb. 27. If you're fading Marquette lately, good for you. They have failed to cover in each of their losses and six of the past nine. The 'under' has also been a frequent occurrence for Marquette, cashing in four of the past five, while going 10-4-1 across the past 15 outings.

Cincinnati (23-8 SU, 18-13 ATS) is another team skidding toward the finish line. They dropped games this week to Houston (29-2 SU, 20-10-1 ATS) and UCF (23-7 SU, 18-11-1 ATS) picked, and they have failed to cover in eight straight games. Total bettors will like the fact the 'under' is 5-1 in the past six, and 7-2 across the past nine outings. They were swept in two regular-season games while going 0-2 ATS in two games against the Cougars, and they split the regular-season games with the Knights while also posting an 0-2 ATS mark. Remember that for the AAC Tournament next week. The AAC is looking like a three-bid league for the NCAA Tournament, possibly four if the committee shows Temple (23-8 SU, 15-14-2 ATS) some love. The Owls just cooled off the Knights over the weekend to enhance their resume'.

Wofford (28-4 SU, 18-11 ATS) is looking like a team no one is going to want to draw in the Big Dance. The Terriers continue to mow down opponents in the SoCon, and they'll look to cap off their perfect conference season in the league final on Monday against UNC Greensboro (28-5 SU, 14-15-2 ATS). The Terriers rolls into Monday's game with a 10-1 ATS mark in the past 11 outings, and they haven't lost in the regular season since Dec. 19. UNCG probably deserves an NCAA Tournament bid, win or lose, although they likely need the win more than Wofford, who probably can afford a loss while still getting in with an at-large bid. The Spartans took care of once-ranked Furman (25-7 SU, 19-10 ATS), moving to 2-0-1 ATS over the past three.

Duke (26-5 SU, 17-14 ATS) slipped in the Battle of the Blues on Saturday night, falling to rival North Carolina (26-5 SU, 19-10-2 ATS) for the second time this season. Fans everywhere would love to see what would happen with a healthy Zion Williamson (knee), and that could still possibly happen in the ACC Tournament. Virginia (28-2 SU, 22-8 ATS) is also in the mix for a No. 1 seed, and it's conceivable the ACC could land two teams on the one-line, and perhaps even three. The Hoos have been the best against the spread, cashing in five of the past six outings while the 'over' has hit in three of the past four.

Michigan State (25-6 SU, 22-9 ATS) knocked off Michigan (26-5 SU, 17-14 ATS) to claim the Big Ten regular-season title. It didn't look like it was going to happen, even as recently as a week ago, when Indiana (17-14 SU, 14-16 ATS) completed the sweep of Sparty. Michigan State is still an impressive 6-2 ATS over the past eight outings, and the 'over' has cashed in three of the past four outings. Purdue (23-8 SU, 17-13-1 ATS) came alive down the stretch, and they will be a tough out in the postseason, too. The Boilermakers have covered three of the past four to wrap up the regular season after a tough 0-3-1 ATS run.
