  • No. 2 Michigan has best-ever start after beating Wildcats
    January 13, 2019
    By The Associated Press

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) Jon Teske scored all 17 of his points in the first half, and No. 2 Michigan is now off to its best start in program history after an 80-60 victory over Northwestern on Sunday night.

The Wolverines (17-0, 6-0 Big Ten) started 16-0 on two previous occasions, but this season's team surpassed that by routing Northwestern. Zavier Simpson scored a career-high 24 points for Michigan, and Teske matched his own career high in scoring.

The 7-foot-1 Teske made three 3-pointers, plus a couple more midrange shots. Simpson - who entered the game shooting 29 percent from 3-point range - connected five times from beyond the arc.

Northwestern (10-7, 1-5) was without leading scorer Vic Law, who was out with a lower-body injury. Dererk Pardon scored 20 points for Northwestern.

Michigan also started 16-0 in 1985-86 and 2012-13. The Wolverines have matched the longest winning streak in school history. They won 17 in a row in 1985 before losing in the NCAA Tournament.

Michigan and Virginia are the only unbeaten teams remaining in Division I.

NO. 6 MICHIGAN STATE 71, PENN STATE 56

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Nick Ward had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead Michigan State past Penn State.

Matt McQuaid added 15 points and Cassius Winston chipped in 11 for the Spartans (15-2, 6-0 Big Ten), who have won 10 straight. They also beat the Nittany Lions (7-10, 0-6) for the 10th consecutive time.

Kenny Goins added 10 rebounds for the Spartans, who only trailed for 10 seconds and led by as many as 21 with 6:44 to play.

Lamar Stevens led Penn State (7-10, 0-6) with 20 points. Myles Dread, Josh Reaves and Mike Watkins all scored 11 points.

      • Monday’s 6-pack

        — Xavier 70, Butler 69— Bulldogs lost last two games, by one point each.

        — Oregon State 79, UCLA 66— Beavers start out 3-0 in Pac-12 play.

        — New England is in the AFC title game for the 8th year in a row.

        — Last five years, home team is 10-0 SU in conference title games.

        — Four highest-scoring teams in the NFL this year are the four teams left playing.

        — Underdogs are 5-2-1 vs spread in last eight #1-#2 seed matchups in conference title games.

        Tweet of the Day
“It’s remarkable how many people that have interest in gambling don’t have the slightest understanding that the top 1% of successful bettors lose 44% of their bets, win and lose 7-10 games in a row periodically, and could care less about the swings. It’s a long game”

        Monday’s quiz

In the movie Bull Durham, when the Bulls cut Crash Davis, what team did he play for next?

        Sunday’s quiz
Bill Belichick has coached the Browns and Patriots.

        Saturday’s quiz
Knicks lost to San Antonio the last time they played in the NBA Finals, in 1999.

        ***************************

        Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

        13) If you had your choice of any QB ever in his prime to play for your team; a real team, not a fantasy team, who would you choose?

        12) If the Cardinals decide to trade QB Josh Rosen and take Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray with the first pick in April’s NFL draft, which teams would be open to trading for Rosen?

My guesses: Miami and Oakland, maybe Jacksonville.

        11) It must suck living in Los Angeles, never anything to do (sarcasm alert). Saturday, the Clippers played Detroit at home, the NHL’s Kings hosted Pittsburgh and the Rams played Dallas in an NFL playoff game.

Sunday, the Lakers host Cleveland, and I’m leaving out all the college sports taking place in the area (Long Beach St, Fullerton and LMU were all home Saturday).

        10) Movie trivia: Do you remember the 1977 movie One on One, where Robby Benson plays a hotshot college basketball player? The actor who played Coach Smith in that movie was GD Spradlin, who also played the Tom Landry-like character in North Dallas Forty.

Turns out that in real life, Spradlin was an oil man who managed John F Kennedy’s Presidential campaign in Oklahoma in 1960. Go figure.

        9) Stanford RB Bryce Love tore his ACL in their regular season finale, which helps explain why he sat out the Sun Bowl— the knee was operated on December 18.

The current bowl system has a growing problem; star players who are already projected to go to the NFL will sit these games out, for this very reason.

        8) Baseball doings:
        — Mets gave 2B Jed Lowrie $20M for two years.
        — Bronx gave 2B DJ LeMahieu $24M for two years.

        7) From Josh Applebaum of Action Network:

“Parlays provide a 30% hold for sportsbooks. Every other major sport averages a hold of 5%. They’re a massive moneymaker for the house. Nothing wrong with the occasional parlay, but individual bets are a much smarter long-term strategy”

        6) Jets are expected to hire Gregg Williams as their new DC, which is an excellent hire.

Steve Sarkisian turned down the Arizona Cardinals and went back to Alabama to be their OC, which tells me that his ultimate goal is be a college head coach again.

        5) The CEO of Disney made $65.7M last year; that seems excessive.

NBC told Megan Kelly to take a hike, but she gets all of her $69M contract, which has about $30M left on it. Ms Kelly’s exit was ignited last fall after she defended Halloween costumes that incorporate blackface. What a country.

        4) Thursday night, the Spurs beat Oklahoma City 154-147 in double OT:
        — It was the first 300-point NBA game since December 7, 2006
        — Spurs made 16-19 (84.2%) from the arc, an NBA record (with 15+ attempts)
        — Russell Westbrook was first player with 24+ points, 24+ assists in a game since Magic Johnson on January 9, 1990.

        3) Patriots 41, Chargers 28— Kansas City opened as a 3-point favorite in AFC title game. New England lost last three times they played AFC title game on road. Last time Patriots won an NFC title game on road was in 2004, last time they won any road playoff game was 2006.

This will be the first time in 70 games that a Tom Brady-led team is an underdog.

Sunday’s game was 38-7 at one point, so final score is misleading; Nantz/Romo emptied their bag of filler material, talking about everything except the PGA Tour, which might’ve been more interesting than some of the stuff they did talk about.

        2) Saints 20, Eagles 14— Philly led 14-0 early, but Saints scored on a drive extended by a fake punt, and they controlled the game from that point on. New Orleans outgained the Eagles 420-250; Philly has a very interesting offseason ahead of it. What to do about Nick Foles?

Saints’ WR Michael Thomas is really good; he was the 6th WR taken (47th player overall) in the 2016 NFL Draft, which is why the draft is so damn interesting. Inexact science.

        1) Somewhere in this great country, there is a gambler who had Seton Hall (-4) Thursday and Maryland (-5) Friday. Both sides lost vs the spread on last-second 3-pointers; gambling is difficult, and in cases like these two games, it can be cruel.

        • Big Monday Tip Sheet
          David Schwab

The third week of January kicks things off with a trio of great matchups this Monday night across the ACC, Big Ten and Big 12. As part of ESPN’s Big Monday, Syracuse will be on the road against Duke as the first featured game of the night.

A little later on FOX Sports 1, Wisconsin takes on Maryland in College Park. The night’s action on ESPN wraps up with Texas squaring off against Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse.

Syracuse Orange at No. 1 Duke Blue Devils (ESPN, 7:00 p.m. ET)

          Opening Odds: No Overnight

          Betting Matchup

Syracuse is coming off Saturday’s 73-59 loss to Georgia tech as a nine-point home favorite. This snapped a four-game winning streak both straight-up and against the spread. The total went OVER 129 points in that loss after staying UNDER in nine of its previous 11 games. The Orange are 11-5 SU and 8-8 ATS overall with a 2-1 record (SU and ATS) in early ACC play. Syracuse is averaging 70.2 points per game while holding opposing teams to 61.7 PPG.

The Blue Devils squeezed past Florida State 80-78 with a last-second three-point shot on Saturday, but the big story for Monday night could be the playing status of freshman phenom Zion Williamson. He missed the second half of that game due to an eye injury. Duke failed to cover against the Seminoles as a 7 ½-point road favorite and the total ended as a PUSH on a closing line of 158 points. This was the first time Duke (14-1 SU, 10-5 ATS) failed to cover in its last six games.

          Betting Trends

-- The Orange are 6-2 ATS in their last eight road games and the total has gone OVER in five of their last six Monday games.

-- The Blue Devils have gone 5-1 ATS in their last six games on Monday and the total has stayed UNDER in eight of their last 12 ACC games.

-- The home team is 4-1 SU in the last five meetings with Syracuse holding the slight 3-2 edge ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings at Duke.

Wisconsin Badgers at Maryland Terrapins (FS1, 8:30 p.m. ET)

          Opening Odds: Maryland -3, Total 136 ½

          Betting Matchup

With Friday’s 84-80 overtime loss to Purdue at home as a three-point favorite, Wisconsin has lost three of its last four games both SU and ATS. It is 3-2 SU (2-3 ATS) in the Big Ten with the total staying UNDER in three of those five games. The Badgers (11-5 SU, 8-8 ATS) have failed to cover in seven of their last 11 games. Senior forward Ethan Happ leads the team in scoring with 20.0 points per game and he put up 31 in Friday’s loss after scoring 22 points in his previous game against Penn State.

Maryland moved to 5-1 SU in conference play with Friday night’s 78-75 victory against Indiana. The Terrapins failed to cover as five-point home favorites and the total went OVER 143 ½ points. They are 4-2 ATS in those six Big Ten games and the total has gone OVER in their last seven outings overall. Maryland has scored at least 74 points in each of those last seven games while allowing an average of 70 points during this same span.

          Betting Trends

-- The Badgers have covered in 10 of their last 12 road games and the total has stayed UNDER in five of their last six games following a SU loss.

-- The Terrapins are 1-3-1 ATS in their last five home games with the total going OVER in all five contests.

-- The road team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in the last four meetings at Maryland.

Texas Longhorns at No. 7 Kansas Jayhawks (ESPN, 9:00 p.m. ET)

          Opening Odds: Kansas -8, Total 139 ½

          Betting Matchup

Texas has lost its last two games SU and ATS closing as favorites against Oklahoma State on the road and Texas Tech at home. It is an even 3-3 SU (2-4 ATS) in its last six games as part of a 10-6 (6-10 ATS) record overall. The Longhorns opened play in the Big 12 on Jan. 2 with a 67-47 romp over Kansas State as slight two-point road underdogs. They are 3-1 ATS this season when closing as underdogs. The total has stayed UNDER in four of their last five games.

With Saturday’s 73-68 victory against Baylor as a 4 ½-point road favorite, Kansas is 3-1 SU (2-2 ATS) in early conference play. The Jayhawks lost to Iowa State 77-60 as 2 ½-point road underdogs on Jan. 5. They are 14-2 SU overall with an even 8-8 record ATS. The total has gone OVER in 10 of the 16 games. Junior forward Dedric Lawson is Kansas’s leading scorer with 19.3 PPG and he recently posted 31 points in a win against TCU.

          Betting Trends

-- The Longhorns are 2-6 ATS in their last eight games against a team with a SU winning record. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of their last nine games when failing to cover in their previous contest.

-- The Jayhawks have failed to cover in five of their last seven games coming off a SU win. The total has gone OVER in 16 of their last 24 games following a SU win.

-- Texas has covered in its last four road games against the Jayhawks and the total has stayed UNDER in six of the last seven meetings at Kansas.

                      • Battle helps Syracuse upset No. 1 Duke in OT
                        January 14, 2019
                        By The Associated Press

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) Tyus Battle scored a season-high 32 points, and Syracuse used its 2-3 zone defense to rattle No. 1 Duke in overtime as the Orange pulled off the upset, 95-91 on Monday night.

With swingman Cameron Reddish out with an illness and point guard Tre Jones suffering a shoulder injury roughly 5+ minutes in, Duke was down two starters and was a completely different team - and the Orange took full advantage.

Paschal Chukwu added 10 points and a career-high 18 rebounds while Elijah Hughes added 20 points, Frank Howard finished with 16 and Oshae Brissett had 14 for the Orange (12-5, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Zion Williamson had a career-high 35 points and 10 rebounds, and his free throw with 16.2 seconds left in regulation tied it at 85 for Duke (14-2, 3-1), but he missed a second go-ahead foul shot.

                        No. 7 KANSAS 80, TEXAS 78

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Lagerald Vick scored 21 points, Marcus Garrett added a career-high 20, and Kansas held on to beat Texas when Jase Febres' 3-pointer at the buzzer never came close.

Dedric Lawson added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Jayhawks (15-2, 4-1 Big 12), who blew a 10-point second-half lead before escaping with their 10th straight win over the Longhorns.

The game was tied at 73 when Lawson made a pair of foul shots. Texas big man Dylan Osetkowski was forced into a jump ball at the other end to give Kansas possession again, and Vick knocked down a 3 from the wing with 1:31 left in the game to give the Jayhawks a cushion.

The teams swapped empty possessions and Texas (10-7, 2-3) was forced to foul Lawson, who missed the second of two free throws. The Longhorns pulled down the rebound and Courtney Ramey buried a 3-pointer to get them within 79-78 with 8.9 seconds left in the game.

They quickly fouled Garrett, a 64-percent foul shooter, and he made the second of two free throws to give the Longhorns a chance. But after racing the ball up floor, they settled for a contested 3 from Febres that clanked harmlessly off the side of the rim.

                        PITTSBURGH 75, No. 11 FLORIDA STATE 62

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Trey McGowens had 30 points and seven rebounds, Xavier Johnson scored 16 and Pittsburgh pulled away late for a win over Florida State.

McGowens, a freshman guard, attacked the bigger, deeper Seminoles relentlessly to help the Panthers (12-5, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) end a 13-game losing streak against ranked teams. Pitt's previous victory over a team in the AP Top 25 came against Florida State on Feb. 18, 2017.

Last Tuesday, McGowens set a school record by pouring in 33 points in a victory over Louisville. He threatened the mark just six days later thanks in large part to going 18 of 19 from the line. Johnson overcame seven turnovers to score seven points down the stretch, including a driving layup with 2:43 remaining that helped restore Pitt's advantage to 65-55 after Florida State cut a 10-point deficit in half.

Trent Forrest scored 19 points for the Seminoles (13-4, 1-3),

                        No. 19 MARYLAND 64, WISCONSIN 60

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Anthony Cowan Jr. hit a pivotal 3-pointer with 44 seconds left, and Maryland edged Wisconsin after blowing a 21-point lead in the second half.

Back in the AP Top 25 for the first time since early December, the Terrapins marked the occasion with a strange hot-and-cold performance against a perennial Big Ten contender before emerging with their sixth straight win.

Maryland (15-3, 6-1) led by 10 after eight minutes and 38-17 with 17:47 remaining before the Badgers (11-6, 3-3) roared back to take a 60-59 lead with 2:01 to go.

Cowan turned it around with his long-range jumper, and the Terps held on after Wisconsin's Nate Reuvers missed two 3-pointers in the final 33 seconds.

                        Reuvers scored a career-high 18 for Wisconsin.

                        NEBRASKA 66, No. 25 INDIANA 51

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Glynn Watson Jr. scored 15 points, Isaac Copeland added 14 and James Palmer Jr. to help Nebraska upset Indiana.

The Cornhuskers (13-4, 3-3 Big Ten) have won two straight overall and three straight in the series. They never trailed.

Romeo Langford had 18 points and Juwan Morgan finished with 17 on a miserable shooting night for the Hoosiers (12-5, 3-3), who have lost three in a row. Indiana's 10-game home winning streak also ended.

And the Cornhuskers never really gave Indiana a chance after scoring the first nine points.

                            Tuesday’s List of 13: College hoop knowledge…….

                            13) Missouri Valley:
                            — Valparaiso is 4-1 in games decided by 5 or fewer points, or in OT.
                            — Illinois State is 52-24 in this league the last five years, but hasn’t made NCAA’s since 1998- they’re 2-2 in Valley so far this year.
                            — #95 Loyola is only team ranked above #136 in country, so Arch Madness will determine the only bid from this league.

                            12) Ivy League:
                            — Have only been three conference games so much, so hard to tell a lot so far.
                            — #90 Yale is highest-ranked team; they beat Cal, Miami, lost to Memphis in double OT.
                            — Brown is 11-4, but vs schedule #318. Still, 11-4 is 11-4.

                            11) Mountain West:
                            — Boise State/UNLV are both 3-0, but Nevada/Fresno are two best teams.
                            — San Diego State is in decline; they’re 9-7, 1-2 in MW, losing 62-48 at Air Force Saturday.
                            — Utah State is 12-5 under new coach Smith, who came in from South Dakota.
                            — This is a one-bid league unless Nevada gets upset in conference tourney.

                            10) Atlantic 14:
                            — This league has only two teams in top 200 in country in experience.
                            — Dayton, Davidson, Saint Louis all started out 3-0 in conference.
                            — Saint Louis forced turnovers on 25.3% of possessions in first three A-14 games.
                            — This looks like another one-bid conference.

                            9) Mid American:
                            — League ranking is up to #9, its highest spot since at least 2002.
                            — Buffalo is 15-1, by far best team in MAC; they’ve won at West Virginia, Syracuse.
                            — Bulls start three seniors and a junior; they beat Arizona in NCAA’s LY.
                            — Northern Illinois is #37 in experience; they won first three MAC games.

                            8) West Coast:
                            — Have nine teams in top 200; only had six last two years, four the year before that.
                            — San Francisco is 14-3 and played Gonzaga tough; are they 2nd-best team in WCC?
                            — Gonzaga won 96-83 at USF Saturday; in six games before that, Zags had allowed average of only 46 ppg.
                            — Not sure this is a multi-bid league, but #8 ranking is its highest in four years.

                            7) American:

                            — Ugly season for Pac-12; there are no top 40 teams right now.
                            — UCLA already fired its coach; they’re 10-7 and very, very young.

                            — Butler lost four of last five games, last two by one point each.
                            — Marquette/Villanova look good for NCAA’s; lot of bubble teams elsewhere.

                            — Kentucky lost its opener by 34 to Duke, but won four of its last five games as they gradually improve- they’re 12-3, despite being experience team #350.

                            3) ACC:

                            • Virginia routs visiting Hokies 81-59
                              January 15, 2019
                              By The Associated Press

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) De'Andre Hunter scored 21 points and Ty Jerome had 14 and a career-high 12 assists as No. 4 Virginia started fast and routed No. 9 Virginia Tech 81-59 on Tuesday night.

Kyle Guy added 15 points for the Cavaliers (16-0, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who never trailed in the first meeting of the programs in which both were ranked in the top 10. Virginia also remained one of two unbeaten teams in the country along with Michigan, which was idle.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker scored 19 points and Ahmed Hill 14 to lead Virginia Tech (14-2, 3-1), which was seeking the first 15-1 start in program history. The Hokies also hoped to repeat last year's 61-60 overtime victory at John Paul Jones Arena, but they trailed by double figures after 12 minutes and never got within single digits the rest of the way.

Virginia could hardly miss in the first half, making 10 of 14 3-point tries, including one by Kihei Clark at the buzzer to make it 44-22. The Hokies, meanwhile, were just 2 for 9 from deep and shot 35 percent (7-for-20) from the field compared to 68 percent (17-for-25) for the Cavaliers in the half.

Virginia finished 13 for 23 from 3-point range and shot 58.5 percent overall (31-for-53).

                              NO. 3 TENNESSEE 106, ARKANSAS 87

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Lamonte' Turner and Jordan Bowden combined to score 40 points off the bench, and No. 3 Tennessee whipped Arkansas for its 11th consecutive victory.

Turner scored 21 points and hit 6 of 8 shots. Bowden was 6-of-7 shooting and 5 of 6 from 3-point range en route to 19 points, and Tennessee's bench outscored Arkansas' 50-23.

Tennessee last won 11 straight in the 2007-08 season. Tennessee (15-1, 4-0 Southeastern Conference) is off to its fastest start since that 2007-08 campaign, when the Vols won 16 of their first 17.

Grant Williams scored 18 points for Tennessee and made all 14 of his free-throw attempts. Admiral Schofield scored all 17 of his points in the second half, and Kyle Alexander added 12 points.

Isaiah Joe scored 23 points, Mason Jones had 18, Reggie Chaney 11 and Daniel Gafford 10 for Arkansas (10-6, 1-3).

                              NO. 10 NEVADA 72, BOISE STATE 71

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Cody Martin hit a 3-pointer with 4.5 seconds remaining to help No. 10 Nevada beat Boise State.

Boise State (8-9, 3-1) had a chance to win it, but Justinian Jessup's long 3-point heave at the buzzer fell short.

Nevada seemed to have the game on cruise control early in the second half, never allowing the Broncos to get any closer than seven points, but the Wolf Pack (17-1, 4-1) remained in constant foul trouble. Starters Trey Porter and Caleb Martin were on the bench with four fouls with just over nine minutes remaining in the game.

Boise State took its first lead of the second half at 69-68 with 2:10 remaining on two free throws by Alex Hobbs. Cody Martin tied it by hitting one of two from the line with 1:52 left. Hobbs answered with a layup 10 seconds later to give the Broncos a 71-69 advantage. Nevada, however, turned up its defensive intensity and stifled two subsequent Boise State possessions, setting up Martin's winner.

                              NO. 12 KENTUCKY 69, GEORGIA 49

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Ashton Hagans silenced a hostile crowd by scoring a season-high 23 points, leading No. 12 Kentucky over Georgia.

The Wildcats (13-3, 3-1 Southeastern Conference) pulled away in the second half for their third straight victory.

Hagans, a freshman who initially committed to Georgia out of high school but wound up signing with Kentucky, was booed by the sellout crowd at Stegeman Coliseum each time he touched the ball.

Georgia (9-7, 1-3) led by five in the opening minutes before going to the locker room down 35-31.

NO. 13 NORTH CAROLINA 75, NOTRE DAME 69

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Nassir Little scored all 11 of his points in the final 11 minutes, and No. 13 North Carolina beat Notre Dame.

Coby White had 17 points while Luke Maye added 14 points and 10 rebounds and Cameron Johnson finished with 11 points for the Tar Heels (13-4, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). UNC used a late 12-1 run to bounce back from its most lopsided home loss under Hall of Fame coach Roy Williams.

Prentiss Hubb scored 18 points, John Mooney had 16 points and 19 rebounds, and D.J. Harvey added 15 points for the Fighting Irish (11-6, 1-3).

                              NO. 15 MARQUETTE 74, GEORGETOWN 71

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sam Hauser scored a career-high 31 points, Theo John tied a career-high with 14 points and No. 15 Marquette held on to beat Georgetown despite Markus Howard - the nation's fourth leading scorer - playing just three scoreless minutes due to lower back tightness.

John blocked Georgetown's James Akinjo's drive with four seconds left as Marquette (15-3, 4-1) won its fourth straight game.

Georgetown (12-6, 2-3) was led by Mac McClung with 24 points while Jessie Govan added 14 points and nine rebounds. McClung's desperation 3-point heave from half court was off the mark.

                              NO. 16 BUFFALO 88, WESTERN MICHIGAN 79

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - Jeremy Harris had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 16 Buffalo held off upset-minded Western Michigan.

Nick Perkins added 14 points for the Bulls (16-1, 4-0 Mid-American Conference), who trailed by 11 in the first half and struggled to shake free of WMU until the very end. Buffalo had won its first three MAC games by a combined 70 points.

The Broncos (6-11, 0-4) went on a 15-0 run in the first half and led 33-22, but Buffalo rebounded quickly and led 43-39 at halftime.

                              WAKE FOREST 71, NO. 17 N.C. STATE 67

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Freshman Jaylen Hoard had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Wake Forest blew a 22-point lead before recovering in time to top No. 17 North Carolina State.

Graduate transfer Torry Johnson added 11 points for the Demon Deacons (8-8, 1-3 Atlantic Coast Conference). That included a critical jumper with 1:19 left in a one-point game, along with two free throws with 13.3 seconds left that helped the Demon Deacons (barely) survive a wild night in Winston-Salem.

Wake Forest led 42-27 at halftime, and then 51-29 with a flurry out of the break. But the Wolfpack (14-3, 2-2) made a move with 15 straight points to get back in it, and then fought all the way back to tie it at 58 on Devon Daniels' floater with 7:46 left.

                              LSU 83, NO. 18 MISSISSIPPI 69

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Tremont Waters scored 20 points, Kavell Bigby-Williams had 14 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks, and LSU beat No. 18 Mississippi.

LSU (13-3, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) used an early 8-0 run in the second half to take a 48-39 lead. The Tigers maintained a healthy advantage from that point, playing tight defense and forcing several turnovers.

Ole Miss (13-3, 3-1) had its 10-game winning streak snapped. The Rebels hadn't lost since Nov. 24, when they fell 71-57 to Cincinnati. Terence Davis led Ole Miss with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

                              NO. 24 MISSISSIPPI STATE 71, FLORIDA 68

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Quinndary Weatherspoon converted a three-point play with 3.4 seconds left to lift No. 24 Mississippi State over Florida 71-68.

Lamar Peters scored all 16 of his points in the first half, and Tyson Carter added 12 for Mississippi State (13-3, 1-2 Southeastern Conference).

KeVaughn Allen had 17 points for Florida (9-7, 1-3), and Andrew Nembhard had 13 points. Noah Locke had 12 points for the Gators, who had won eight straight against Mississippi State.
