    2) Steelers, +3 (1,138)- W

Season record: 29-21-3 (10-1 last two weeks)

    **********

Armadillo: Monday’s Den: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday……

Saints 45, Rams 35— New Orleans had 18 first downs, three TD’s on its first 32 plays in this game; then they blew a 35-14 lead- wild game, but they pulled away late. Saints have won their last seven games; average total in their four home games is 67.3.

Former NFL ref Gene Steratore posted this Sunday morning:

“Through Week 8, the average number of penalties accepted per game is 13.4- that is the fewest since 2013. Despite what most may think, the refs are letting them play this season.”

Vikings 24, Lions 9— Minnesota is now 10-0 vs spread (9-1 SU) in its last nine pre-bye games; they’ve won four of last five games. Yardage in this game was just 283-209, and game was indoors. Under Zimmer, Minnesota is 21-7 as home favorites, 3-2 this year.

Vikings sacked Stafford 10 times; in its last two games, Detroit has run ball for 34-66 yards. Obviously, they’ve got some issues on the offensive line.

Chiefs 37, Browns 21— Cleveland looked better on offense with Kitchens calling plays, but Kansas City has it rolling right now- KC averaged 10.6 yards/pass attempt, had an 11-yard edge in field position. Chiefs had a 499-388 edge in yardage.

Chiefs won/covered 8 of their last 9 games; they’re 10-3 in last 13 games as road favorites. Cleveland is 6-16-1 in its last 23 games as a home dog; they lost last four games, giving up an average of 33.5 ppg.

Steelers 23, Ravens 16— One of key plays in this game was a 22-yard pass by backup QB Dobbs to Smith-Schuster when Steelers were backed up on own 5-yard line with 20-13 lead and 12:35 left to play- drive ended in a clinching FG. It was Dobbs’ only play of the game. This was just second win for Steelers in their last six visits here.

Pittsburgh converted 10-16 on third down, outgained Baltimore 395-268 in a game with no turnovers. Ravens lost their last three games, are 4-5 heading into their bye week.

Panthers 42, Buccaneers 28— Three of Carolina’s six TD’s came on drives of 42 or fewer yards; Panthers ran ball for 179 yards, are looking strong- they’re a game behind New Orleans in NFC South- teams have two meetings coming up.

In their last six games, Bucs are an astounding minus-17 in turnovers. Over is 7-1 in Tampa Bay games; hard to believe the Bucs won’t be cleaning house again when this season ends- they allowed 30+ points in five of their last six games.

Dolphins 13, Jets 6— This was an unusual boxscore:
    — Jets’ offense ran 64 plays; they were outscored on those 7-6 by Miami’s defense.
    — Neither team scored an offensive touchdown.
    — Total yardage was 282-168, Jets- Miami had only 7 first downs.
    — Teams combined to convert only five of 29 third down plays.
    — There was only one play the whole game inside either team’s red zone.
    — Not many team go +4 in turnovers and score only 13 points.

Bears 41, Bills 9— This was an even more unusual boxscore:
    — Chicago led 28-0 at the half; their defense scored two of the TD’s.
    — The other two first half TD’s came on drives of only 37-23 yards.
    — Total yardage was 264-190 Bills, and they lost by 32 points.
    — Bills turned ball over four times (-3); Bears had 18-yard edge in field position, and thats not counting their two defensive TD’s.
    — What Buffalo has done this year is just astoundingly bad; they made the playoffs LY for first time in 19 years, but quickly traded LY’s QB and are now the worst team in the NFL.
    — New England’s three AFC East rivals scored a total of 28 points Sunday.

Falcons 38, Redskins 14— Atlanta was 10-13 on third down in this game; they’ve converted 42 of last 68 third down plays- this was their first win in three outdoor games this season.

NFC East teams are 1-8 vs spread as non-divisional favorites this season. Washington leads that division with an unimpressive 5-3 record.

Texans 19, Broncos 17— Houston is first team since the 1970 New York Giants to start a season 0-3, then win their next six games. Broncos missed a 51-yard FG wide right in the last minute.

Denver lost six of its last seven games, appears headed to its first consecutive losing seasons since the mid-70’s- they’re 2-5-2 in last nine games as home favorites. Under is 4-1 in last five Houston games, 6-2 in last eight Denver games.

Chargers 25, Seahawks 17— Seattle is now 1-8 vs spread in last nine games as home favorites. Chargers won their last five games overall- they won here despite converting on only 2-9 third down plays, and missing three of four PAT’s. Bolts are now 4-0 outside Los Angeles.

Patriots 31, Packers 17— Game was tied after three quarters; Green Bay had the ball on the New England 28-yard line- they were driving. First play of the fourth quarter, Aaron Jones loses a fumble, and that ended that- Green Bay was useless the rest of the game.

New England won its last six games, is 5-0 at home (4-1 as HF)- they’re 26-12-3 vs spread in last 41 games as a home favorite.

Mike McCarthy played college football (TE) at Baker University in Kansas; his dad was a fireman and bar owner in Pittsburgh. He is 134-82-2 as an NFL head coach, but he’s had Favre/Rodgers as his starting quarterbacks during that time. Pretty good gig.

Hell, what would Jeff Fisher’s record be if he had Favre/Rodgers? Fisher went 178-171-1 as an NFL head coach, with no one near as good as Favre/Rodgers at QB.

            Monday's Tip Sheet
            Kevin Rogers

Game of the Night: Celtics at Nuggets – 9:05 PM EST

The Warriors own the best record in the Western Conference at 9-1, but the Nuggets (8-1 SU, 6-3 ATS) are right behind and handed Golden State its only loss of the season. Denver remains unbeaten at Pepsi Center at 5-0 after rallying past Utah on Saturday, 103-88 as 4 ½-point favorites. The Nuggets outscored the Jazz in the fourth quarter, 35-15 after trailing by five points, while limiting an opponent to less than 100 points at home for the third time this season.

The Celtics (6-3 SU, 4-5 ATS) began their five-game road trip squandering a double-digit lead and falling in the final seconds to the Pacers, 102-101 on Saturday. Boston’s four-game winning streak came to a halt in spite of the Celtics knocking down a 19 three-pointers, one game after drilling 24 treys in a home win over Milwaukee. The Celtics had won three consecutive road contests prior to Saturday’s defeat, but Boston has yet to lose back-to-back games this season.

Boston swept Denver last season, which includes a one-point triumph at Pepsi Center as two-point underdogs. Kyrie Irving led the Celtics in the road victory with 27 points, while Denver’s Nikola Jokic posted 24 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. Boston is listed as an underdog for the second time this season as the Celtics fell to the Raptors on October 19 as three-point ‘dogs, 113-101. Denver has been the top UNDER team in the league this season with a 7-1-1 mark, including a 4-1 home UNDER ledger.

            Upward Flight?

The Rockets (3-5 SU, 2-6 ATS) have been a huge disappointment out of the gate after finishing one victory shy of the NBA Finals last season. Houston began 1-5, but the Rockets have rebounded with consecutive victories at Brooklyn and Chicago. Granted those are likely lottery teams again this season, but the Rockets need some kind of momentum to avoid falling way behind in the Southwest division. James Harden returned after a three-game absence with a hamstring injury to score 25 points in Saturday’s victory over the Bulls, which included Houston limiting Chicago to seven third quarter points.

Houston travels to Indiana (7-3 SU, 6-4 ATS) as the Pacers seek their fourth consecutive win. Victor Olapido connected on the go-ahead three-pointer in Saturday’s 102-101 home underdog triumph over Boston as Indiana’s last three wins have come by a combined nine points. Last season, the Pacers lost both matchups with the Rockets by double-digits, while the past five meetings between these teams have finished UNDER the total.

            Thundering Back

Oklahoma City stumbled out of the chute by going 0-4, while New Orleans caught fire early by compiling a 4-0 record. Things change fast, even just a few days into November. The Thunder (4-4 SU, 4-4 ATS) are rolling by winning four consecutive games, while the Pelicans (4-5 SU, 4-5 ATS) are on a five-game slide.

OKC downed the Suns and Clippers at home, while rallying from an 18-point deficit to shock the Hornets on Thursday. The latest victory for the Thunder came in Friday’s 134-111 drilling of the struggling Wizards as OKC delivered the knockout punch by outscoring Washington, 44-20 in the second quarter. The Thunder improved to 4-2 with Russell Westbrook in the lineup as the 2017 MVP isn’t quite averaging a triple-double yet (25.3 ppg, 8.5 rpg, and 8.8 apg), but OKC has scored at least 111 points in each of its past four wins.

New Orleans wraps up a five-game road trip that has seen the Pelicans lose at Denver, Golden State, Portland, and San Antonio. All-Star Anthony Davis has been dealing with a lingering elbow injury as he missed the losses at Denver and Portland, while scoring 17 points in Saturday’s 14-point setback at San Antonio. The 95 points scored on Saturday was the lowest total for New Orleans through nine games, as the Pelicans look to capitalize off a 2-1 record against the Thunder last season.

            Almost Perfect 10

The Warriors (9-1 SU, 6-4 ATS) have lost only once through 10 games, while coming off three straight wins by double-digits. The latest victory for the two-time defending champions came against Minnesota on Friday, 116-99 as 10 ½-point favorites, helped out by a 33-12 fourth quarter scoring advantage by Golden State. Only three Warriors scored in double-figures, but it was the star trio of Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, and Klay Thompson, who combined for 83 points and 11 three-pointers.

Golden State hosts Memphis tonight as the Grizzlies (5-3 SU, 5-3 ATS) lost in the final seconds at Phoenix on Sunday, 102-100 as four-point favorites. The Grizzlies have lost in four of the past five visits to Oracle Arena, including a pair of 13-point defeats last season. Since falling at Indiana on opening night, the Grizzlies have won and covered in each of their past two underdog opportunities, both coming at Utah.

            Another Almost Perfect 10

Golden State is not all alone at 9-1. Back in the Eastern Conference, the Raptors (9-1 SU, 5-5 ATS) keep rolling after blasting the Lakers on Sunday, 121-107 at Staples Center. Even without leading scorer Kawhi Leonard in the lineup, the Raptors jumped out to a 42-17 lead after one quarter and never looked back as Serge Ibaka shot a scorching 15-of-17 from the floor for 34 points. Leonard missed the game with a foot injury as his status is up in the air for tonight’s contest at Utah.

The Jazz (4-5 SU, 4-5 ATS) have been silenced at home this season by going 0-3 at Vivint Smart Home Arena. Utah fell apart in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s loss at Denver, as top scorer Donovan Mitchell will sit tonight with an ankle injury. Utah is listed as a home underdog for the second time this season as the Jazz barely cashed as a 2 ½-point favorite in a one-point defeat to Golden State on October 19. The Jazz have struggled with the Raptors over the years by losing the last two home matchups, while posting an ugly 1-9 ATS mark the past 10 meetings since November 2013.

Games to Watch - Week 4

The start of the current NBA season has been a bit of a dream come true for basketball fans who love to see a lot of scoring. It appears as though defense has been put on the back burner in the early going, with several players going off for 50-point games and Klay Thompson breaking the 3-point record for a single game. We can probably expect more of the same this week, as there is no sign that the offensive outburst is about to slow down.

Let’s take a quick look ahead at some of the best games on the NBA schedule for the coming week.

Monday - New Orleans Pelicans at Oklahoma City Thunder

The Pelicans roared out to a fantastic start to the season, winning their opening four games of the season and challenging for the top spot in the Western Conference in the process. It has been all downhill since then, though, as they have now lost five games in a row to slide below the playoff line. They will get this week started with a trip to Oklahoma City to face a Thunder team that is coming to life after a slow start to the year. After losing their opening four games, the Thunder have now reeled off four straight wins, a run that has taken them into the No. 8 slot. I think we are in for a close one here, but I am on the Thunder to win.

Tuesday - Milwaukee Bucks at Portland Trail Blazers

There was a belief that these two teams would be better this season, but I’m not so sure that we saw either of them starting out as well as they have. The Bucks have started the season as 8-1 and have benefitted from having six of those games at home, with each of those games ending in a win. The Portland Trail Blazers are just two games out of the lead in the West, boasting a 7-3 record through their opening 10 games of the season. Over the past two seasons, the Bucks have gone 4-0 versus Portland, so let’s take them to win here.

Wednesday - Toronto Raptors Vs Sacramento Kings

The Raptors have come storming out of the gate this season, posting a 9-1 record and going unbeaten at home to get things rolling. They have only had four games on the road to this point, but they have posted a respectable 3-1 record in those games. The Sacramento Kings find themselves in unfamiliar territory above the playoff line after 10 games this season, getting off to a 6-4 start. Prior to last season, the Kings had taken four in a row from Toronto, but they lost both meetings last year and will also probably lose this one, too.

Thursday - Milwaukee Bucks at Golden State Warriors

The fact that we have the Milwaukee Bucks on our list twice this week tells you that they have a tough week ahead of them. We have them beating Portland earlier in the week, but they may be in for a tougher time of things on the road to the Golden State Warriors. The Dubs are off to a fantastic start this season, going 9-1 through their first 10 games while failing to drop a game on home court. These two teams split their regular season series last season, with the Bucks winning in Oakland, but I am on Golden State to get the win here.

                    Pacers loving their home court

The Houston Rockets travel to Indiana to take on the 7-3 Indiana Pacers. The Rockets have been disappointing thus far but are happy to be reunited with Harden who leads the team in scoring, averaging 27.8 points per contest. The Rockets are coming off a 96-88 road win in Chicago, where they made up for their 42 percent shooting from the floor by an incredible defensive showing holding the Bulls to only seven points in the third quarter.

The Pacers have won five of the last six meetings and are coming off a thrilling 102-101 home win, rallying late to erase a deficit and secure the win with Victor Oladipo hitting a clutch 3-point shot with seconds left on the clock.

The Rockets have not fared well versus teams with winning records, going 0-6 ATS this season. They have also yet to win two straight this year, going 0-4 in their last five meetings following a win. Head-to-head, the Under has hit in five straight meetings, and the home team has had a lot of success going 7-3 ATS.

The Pacers defensively have been sound, allowing opponents to shoot only 43.6 percent from the floor and score 102.7 points per game overall and only 99.8 at home. Take Under 215 as this game should be closely contested and lower scoring.

                    Rocky starts

The 3-5 Miami Heat find themselves as four-point underdogs as they travel to Detroit to take on the 4-4 Pistons. The Heat been able to put points on the board averaging 112.5 per game, despite a very poor shooting percentage of 44 percent. Defensively, they have not been bad overall, but allow opponents to shoot 37.6 percent from beyond the arc.

The Pistons opened their season hot winning four straight, but since then have dropped their last four games to put themselves at .500 on the year.

The Heat will be without James Johnson, Dion Waiters, and Hassan Whiteside. Starting point guard Goran Dragic is expected to return after missing Saturday’s game with a foot injury. He has been integral to the Heat’s success contributing 17.7 points per game along with 5 assists and 3.4 rebounds. With Dragic not at full health, look at taking Under 220 as neither team has shown much consistency on the offensive end.

The importance of a fast start

Two teams going in drastically different directions face off as the Oklahoma City Thunder, winners of four straight, host the New Orleans Pelicans trying to end a five-game losing streak.

The Pelicans are really feeling the loss of all-star center DeMarcus Cousins. Defensively they allow the second highest points per game in the Association with 120.6 with opponents shooting 47.9 percent from the floor.

With the Pelicans point guard Elfrid Payton out once again, it is imperative they get out to a good start today on the road, as falling behind to this Thunder team early could mean trouble. Luckily for the Pelicans, getting out to an early start has been something they have been good at, averaging 30.4 first quarter points per game and 57.8 points in the opening half. Look at taking their first half points Over.

                    Inside the paint

It’s no surprise these two teams are off to great starts, and we should be in for a great contest today as the Boston Celtics travel to Denver to take on the Nuggets at Pepsi Center. The Celtics enter today averaging 103.9 percent on 42.2 percent shooting. The Nuggets have shot a very nice 46.6 percent from the floor leading to 111.4 points. Defensively, these have been two of the better teams at forcing opponents into taking tough shots with the Celtics allowing 99.8 points against, and the Nuggets an also impressive 101.9.

The Nuggets have done most of their damage in the paint this year, ranking third in the Association averaging 58.2 per game. The Celtics defensively have been efficient inside, allowing 45.1 paint points per game. Although the Nuggets have many players that can shoot the three-ball well, they have really struggled with consistency from beyond the arc, only shooting 30.6 percent, and have the second lowest average points per game off 3-point shots with 25.7. If the Nuggets aren’t successful inside, they might be in for a long night. Take the Celtics +2.5.

                    Statement wins

The Raptors have been incredibly efficient on both sides of the floor this year, and they are coming off one of their biggest statement wins without superstar Kawhi Leonard who sat out last night’s contest at Staples Center. Tonight, they travel to Utah to take on the 4-5 Jazz who have lost five of their last eight games. The Raptors are 4-0 in the second game of their back-to-backs and have been successful when traveling to Utah going 5-0 ATS over their last five meetings, and 9-1 ATS over their last 10.

The Jazz have ruled out shooting guard Donovan Mitchell early, and this is an enormous loss as he’s been the heart and soul of the Jazz team, and arguably their best offensive player. This will make things tough on Utah as the Raptors defensively are limiting opponents to only 107.8 points per game.

With Mitchell out, the Jazz will need someone to help jump start their offense, and that could very well be Ricky Rubio. Inconsistency in the shooting game has been an issue for him but did see his field goals attempted per game increase over the last two. He’s been an integral part of their offense, averaging 7.4 assists per game and contributing 2.8 rebounds. Points may not be easy to come by against Toronto, but Rubio’s low points, rebounds and assists total might be worthy of a closer look.
