    — Rockets 119, Nets 111— Carmelo Anthony scored 28 points off the bench.

    — Arizona 42, Colorado 34— Buffs lost four in a row after their 5-0 start.

    — Warriors 116, Wolves 99— Minnesota was +11 in TO’s, only 13-45 behind arc.

    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……

    13) Since 1950, NFL QB’s with 250+ passing yards, 3+ passing TD’s and no INT in their NFL debut:

    — 1961, Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton
    — 1986 Hall of Famer Jim Kelly (played in USFL before NFL)
    — 2018 Nick Mullens, Thursday night

    12) Golfer Bryson DeChambeau will go against the grain this coming season and putt with the pin in the hole, in every tournament except the US Open, where apparently the flagsticks are thicker than at regular Tour events.

DeChambeau said this: ”It depends on the COR, the coefficient of restitution of the flagstick. In U.S. Opens, I’ll take it out, and every other Tour event, when it’s fiberglass, I’ll leave it in and bounce that ball against the flagstick if I need to.”

    Alrighty then.

    11) South Carolina Gamecocks will play a home football game vs Akron December 1 to make up for the game vs Marshall that was canceled on September 15 due to Hurricane Florence.

    10) Cubs traded lefty P Drew Smyly to Texas for a couple of broken bats, then picked up Cole Hamels’ $20M option for next season.

    9) Clayton Kershaw had two years for around $71M left on his Dodgers contract; they tore that up and now he has a three-year, $93M deal- its good to be him.

    8) Oakland A’s won 97 games this year but had only one bunt hit the whole season, by Jed Lowrie in Minnesota.

Since 1988, they’re just second team (’95 Cardinals) to go whole season with only one bunt hit.

    7) How does Joe Girardi not have a managing job in the major leagues?

11 years experience, a record of 988-794, albeit only 28-24 in playoffs with Bronx Bombers. His one losing season was in 2006 with the 78-84 Marlins, who went 71-91 the year after he left.

The most fascinating part of modern baseball is the internal tug-of-war between analytics people and old-school baseball people— who/where are the decisions made? Interesting stuff.

    6) College basketball starts Tuesday night; research is in full swing.

Last year, the Penn Quakers won the Ivy League tournament and got a 16-seed in the NCAA tournament, the Ivy League’s first 16-seed since 1989. Ivy teams had been on an upswing, but when upsets happen in the conference tournament, you get lower seeds in the NCAA’s.

    5) Tom Crean is the new basketball coach at Georgia, which is a tough place to win; in the last 25 years, Tubby Smith, Jim Harrick, Mark Fox among others have swung, mostly missed trying to make the Dawgs winners at a school that is football-centric- they drew 80,000 fans for the spring football game.

Crean is a good coach; when he was at Marquette, his first booster meeting drew 17 people, not a good start, but then he recruited Dwyane Wade and wound up in the Final Four.

Georgia hasn’t won an NCAA tournament game since 1996; this will be fun to follow.

    4) Kentucky spent $19,180,059 on men’s basketball in the latest fiscal year; Georgia spent $6,237,492, so you get the idea of the scope of Crean’s job.

    3) Mid-American Conference (MAC) hasn’t had an at-large team in NCAA’s since 1999, but this could be the year; league is expected to be stronger than it has been in years.

    2) Missouri Valley teams won their last nine first round games in NCAA tournament.

    1) Looking for an improved NBA team that is fun to watch on League Pass? Sacramento Kings won their last five games, are fun to watch- they scored 146 points in their last game and six of their nine games have been on the road.

All eyes on Mitchell's status, and today's NBA odds and analysis
              Monique Vág

Jazz leading scorer Donovan Mitchell missed Utah's last game with a hamstring injury, but is expected to suit up tonight.

Saturday’s NBA card features a lot of evenly matched teams which will likely produce some closely contested contests. There’s a battle of some of the East’s best as the Celtics (-3) take on the Pacers. While in the West the Pelicans visit the Spurs, the Nuggets host the Jazz, and LeBron and the Lakers travel to Portland to take on Damian Lillard’s 6-2 Blazers. We’re here to bring you the must-read betting notes from around the Association to help you make the best wagers for tonight’s NBA odds.

              BEASTS OF THE EAST

The Celtics look to extend their four-game winning streak as they travel to Bankers Life Fieldhouse to take on the 6-3 Pacers. Boston enters averaging 104.2 points on 42 percent shooting and are the only team in the Association holding opponents under 100 points per game, with 99.5.

The Pacers have gone on a hot streak of their own, winning four of their last five games. They’re averaging 108.8 points per game on 50.6 percent shooting from the floor and 41.6 percent from beyond the arc. Defensively, they are surrendering 102.6 points on 43.2 percent shooting.

The Celtics’ Jayson Tatum is off to a solid start this year but has seen his offensive production dip over their past three contests. Although he’s only shooting 40.7 percent from the floor, he’ll continue to take shots, averaging 13.5 field goals attempted a game. He’s contributing 16 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. His offensive will be needed today and his points, rebounds, and assists total of 24.5 is low. Take the Over.

WILL THE REAL PELICANS PLEASE STAND UP?

The New Orleans Pelicans opened their season 4-0, but now find themselves with a .500 record after losing four straight. They’re coming off a blowout loss on the road to the Trail Blazers in a game where they had no response to Julius Randle’s off the bench onslaught of 29 points. And now they have a tough matchup with the Spurs in San Antonio.

Meanwhile, the San Antonio Spurs have gotten out to a great start winning five of their first seven games. They’re averaging 114.6 points per game and shooting 46.5 percent from the field and 39 percent from beyond the arc.

The home team has dominated this rivalry posting a 36-15 ATS record over their last 51 meetings. Although the Pelicans have gone 5-1 ATS over their last six meetings, they’ve gone 2-4 ATS over their last six against the Spurs and the Pelicans are an astounding 3-21 SU in its last 24 games when playing on the road against San Antonio. The Pelicans have struggled without Anthony Davis, and there’s no reason to think they won’t again with him questionable for today’s contest. Take San Antonio as small home favorites and lay the 3-points.

              ALL EYES ON DONOVAN

The Utah Jazz travel to Denver to take on the 7-1 Nuggets. The Jazz enter today averaging 114.3 points on 47 percent shooting and have allowed opponents to shoot 46.7 percent from the floor and score an average of 109.3 points per game. They’ve been good on the road winning four of their first five games.

The Nuggets have been dominant at home winning 11 straight home games. They are averaging 112.5 points on 46.3 percent shooting. Defensively, they allow opponents to shoot 45.2 percent from the floor and surrender 103.6 points per game.

With Donovan Mitchell still listed as questionable for tonight’s contest, his status is the most important thing to monitor. The Jazz will be playing on the second night of a back-to-back and really needed his playmaking abilities and consistent shooting last night in Memphis.

Jazz center Rudy Gobert only attempted five field goals through 37 minutes, and that was not due to foul trouble – he had his hands full with a Grizzlies team, and it looks he will again with a Nuggets team who don’t allow a lot of points in the paint this year. Take Under his points total of 15.5 if Mitchell sits as he was particularly affected with the absence and chemistry missing with Mitchell out last game.

              LAKERS FAST STARTS

The Lakers travel to Moda Center to take on the 6-2 Portland Trail Blazers. The Lakers have finally started to get things going offensively winning three of their last five games. It won’t be an easy task as they take on the Blazers who have won six of their first eight games and hope to make it four straight after coming off a dismantling of the Pelicans in a 132-119 home win on Thursday.

The Blazers have been great at home going 20-6 ATS in their last 26 home games and are 5-0 SU in their last five games versus the Lakers.

Los Angeles have gotten out to early starts and it is imperative versus a Blazers game that can beat you from anywhere on the court. With the Lakers averaging 30.6 points in the first quarter and 63.9 for the half, an early start especially on the road looks like a necessity. With the total for the game set at 236, points should not be hard to come by. Take their team total Over 60 for the first half.

              RAPTORS RESTING KAWHI

Raptors head coach Nick Nurse plans to sit Kawhi Leonard on back-to-backs. Toronto travels to Los Angeles Sunday to take on arch nemesis Lebron James and features the first game of their back-to-back with the Utah Jazz on deck Monday. According to NBA.com, Nurse was quoted saying: “The plan is for a little while here to not let him play (both halves of) the back-to-backs. I don’t think we’ve decided how long that’s gonna be yet. We’re going game by game”.

The Raptors have needed Kawhi who has been dominant averaging 26.1 points per game, shooting 50.4 percent from the floor, 44.8 percent from beyond the arc, and contributing 7.6 rebounds per game along with 3.4 assists. Without Kawhi, the Raptors might be in for some trouble. Keep that in mind when looking ahead in their schedule and locking in early lines.
