    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

    Updated Super Bowl odds:

    New England 2-1

    Pittsburgh 6-1

    Minnesota 8-1

    Philadelphia 10-1

    New Orleans 12-1

    LA Rams 13-1

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

    13) In the great TV show Billions, hedge fund trader Bobby Axelrod, who is really rich, likes to say, “Whats the point of having (bleep) you money if you never say (bleep) you?”

Boosters at the U of Oregon must have bleep-you money, since they just gave Jim Leavitt $1.7M a year to stay at Oregon, to be the Ducks’ defensive coordinator. $1.7M a year for a guy who isn’t the head coach!!!! Why?

Apparently the boosters were more than a little annoyed that former coach Willie Taggart took a job interview at Florida State while using a Oregon’s booster’s private plane on a recruiting trip, so they overpaid Leavitt to keep him from joining Taggart at FSU. Spite can be expensive.

    12) Atlanta’s airport is the biggest one in the country and it was shut down Sunday after a fire in an electrical box. 1,200 flights were canceled Sunday. Imagine the chaos? Monday morning the airport was jammed with travelers who were still stuck there, and the electronic boarding pass system wasn’t working, multiplying the backlog of customers.

    11) Baseball agent Scott Boras still has 13 unsigned free agents for next season; when does this guy sleep?

    10) Phillies gave 1B Carlos Santana $60M for three years, which moves Rhys Hoskins to LF, but also creates a logjam at the other two OF positions. Nick Williams figures to play in center, but will Odubel Herrera or Aaron Altherr play right? Or will they make another trade?

    9) Some people are comparing Oklahoma freshman Trae Young to Steph Curry, which is really unfair. Curry was mostly under the radar until he led Davidson to the Elite 8 as a sophomore, and his dad played in the NBA.

Young is a terrific player, but let him be a kid and progress at his own rate.

    8) Illinois State 101, Ole Miss 97 OT— Last spring, ISU coach Dan Muller posted a sarcastic note on Twitter, essentially daring Power 5 teams to schedule his Redbirds. Ole Miss took him up on it, and I wonder now if Andy Kennedy regrets it.

Ole Miss lost four of its last five games, with three of the losses in OT. Rebels just got some new facilities couple years ago; the boosters who paid for those facilities probably ain’t real happy with the losing.

    7) Herm Edwards is the new football coach at Arizona State; ASU fired Todd Graham, the last head coach but kept both coordinators, but since Edwards got hired, both coordinators already quit. One took a head coaching job at UL-Lafayette; the other one left for health reasons.

    6) Billy Joel has had 46 concerts in Madison Square Garden, the most of any performer.

    5) NFL coaches must get sick of talking to the media; I mean, how many times can you say the same thing? It is part of why they make a ton of money; they’re the voice of the franchise, talking to all their fans, but for a coach on a losing team whose job may be on thin ice, it can’t be a lot of fun.

Bill Belichick is so boring in his pressers- he just fulfills his obligations and moves on, but players need to look at that and imitate it— keep them from getting fined by the league.

    4) Purdue basketball coach Matt Painter once worked as a fork lift operator, before he began his coaching career. Painter also appeared in the 1994 movie Blue Chips; lot of college basketball players back then were in the movie, playing ball in the game scenes.

    3) Why did the Lakers retire two numbers for Kobe Bryant?, So they can keep selling two of his t-shirts in their gift shop? I know he wore both 8 and 24; pick one of them and retire it.

    2) Fort Wayne 92, Indiana 72— Mastodons made 17-30 3-pointers, beat Indiana for second year in a row; their coach Jon Coffman makes $135,000 a year. Indiana coach Archie Miller makes $2M a year.

    1) Falcons 24, Buccaneers 21— Atlanta is 9-5 and controls its own destiny in NFC South; they play Saints, Panthers to finish season.

            December 18, 2017

Game of the Night: Cavaliers at Bucks – 8:05 PM EST
            [/B]
Cleveland (23-8 SU, 11-19-1 ATS) was suffering through an NBA Finals hangover early on by going 5-7. The Cavaliers have responded by winning 18 of their past 19 games to take control of the Central division, capped off by a 106-99 victory at Washington as 2 ½-point road underdogs on Sunday. LeBron James posted a triple-double by scoring 20 points, pulling down 15 rebounds, and dishing out 15 assists in spite of shooting 8-of-23 from the floor.

Milwaukee (15-13 SU, 11-13-4 ATS) won six of seven games from late November through mid-December, but the Bucks have stumbled of late by dropping three in a row. Jason Kidd’s team allowed exactly 115 points in each of those defeats to New Orleans, Chicago, and Houston, while sailing OVER the total in each contest. The Bucks cashed as 10 ½-point underdogs in a 115-111 setback at Houston on Saturday, their highest ‘dog number of the season.

In two matchups this season, the Cavaliers have topped the Bucks each time, including a 116-97 triumph at BMO Harris Bradley Center on October 20. Cleveland shot 54% from the field, led by James’ 24 points and five three-pointers from Kyle Korver. The only bright spot for Milwaukee came from their star, Giannis Antetokounmpo, who shot 15-of-22 from the field and scored 34 points.

In the second meeting at Quicken Loans Arena on November 7, the Cavs held off the Bucks, 124-119 as five-point favorites. After falling behind by 11 points after one quarter, Milwaukee stormed back to take a two-point halftime lead. Cleveland outscored Milwaukee by seven points in the second half as Kevin Love torched the Bucks for 32 points and 16 rebounds.

Cleveland has captured eight of the past nine meetings with Milwaukee since November 2015, including a 3-1 mark at BMO Harris Bradley Center. The Cavs have won nine of their past 11 on the highway, while Milwaukee is listed as a home underdog for only the second time this season, losing to Oklahoma City on Halloween by 19 points.

Pelicans at Wizards – 7:05 PM EST

Washington (16-14 SU, 14-16 ATS) has failed to cover in five consecutive games, as the Wizards close out their four-game homestand with the Pelicans. In Sunday’s 106-99 defeat to Cleveland, the backcourt duo of John Wall and Bradley Beal combined to shoot 16-of-43 from the floor and score 42 points as the Wizards lost to the Cavaliers for the second time at home this season. The Wizards have registered the UNDER at Capital One Arena in nine of the past 10 tries, while finishing UNDER the total in eight of the last nine games overall.

New Orleans (15-15 SU, 16-13-1 ATS) has been the definition of a roller-coaster team of late by alternating wins and losses in each of its past nine games. The Pelicans lost to the Nuggets in overtime on Friday, 117-115 after blowing a 13-point lead following one quarter of play. The three-headed monster of DeMarcus Cousins, Anthony Davis, and Jrue Holiday put up 82 points, but couldn’t hold onto a late double-digit advantage to suffer its fourth road loss in their past five tries.

This series has been all Wizards the last five seasons with Washington posting an incredible 9-1 SU and 8-2 ATS mark against New Orleans. Last season, the Wizards took care of the Pelicans twice by double-digits apiece, while each game easily went UNDER the total. New Orleans last won in the Nation’s Capital on January 1, 2011, as the Pelicans have dropped each of their previous five visits to Washington.

            Kings at 76ers – 7:05 PM EST

Following an impressive 7-2-1 ATS stretch, Sacramento (9-20 SU, 12-14-3 ATS) is coming off a pair of double-digit road losses at Minnesota and Toronto. The Kings led the Raptors on Sunday, 63-61 at halftime as 12-point underdogs, but Sacramento could muster only 30 second half points in a 108-93 setback at Air Canada Center. Sacramento lost to Toronto for the second time in a seven-day span, while falling to 4-3 away from Golden 1 Center.

Philadelphia (14-15 SU, 16-12-1 ATS) stubbed its toe in a 117-115 setback to suddenly streaking Chicago on Monday as two-point favorites. Joel Embiid sat out for the 76ers, but Dario Saric stepped up by scoring 27 points in Philadelphia’s sixth loss in the past seven games. The Sixers erased a 12-point second half deficit to take an eight-point advantage with four minutes remaining before getting outscored, 18-8 down the stretch.

Sacramento rallied to stun Philadelphia in its first meeting this season, 109-108 as 6 ½-point home underdogs in early November. Rookie guard De’Aaron Fox knocked down the game-winning jumper with 13 seconds remaining as the 76ers squandered a six-point lead in the final 90 seconds.
