    Wednesday, November 22

James Madison is 0-4 vs D-I teams; they were 72-60 in Matt Brady’s last four years as coach, are now 11-27 under his replacement. Dukes are shooting 28.9% on arc, in losses by 16-9-8-13 points. JMU starts two juniors, two seniors. Appalachian State lost two of three in Myrtle Beach tournament, losing 104-98 to Iowa St, 86-67 to Western Michigan. ASU beat UTEP by 4- they’re playing #34 tempo, but are in bottom 15 in country at forcing turnovers. CAA favorites are 3-2 vs spread; Sun Belt underdogs are 14-7.

5-0 Georgia Southern is #29 experience team in country; they’ve already beaten Wake Forest by 2, Missouri State by 1, UMKC by 3- quite a start to their season. Eagles are shooting 38.7% from arc, only 62.5% on foul line. Towson State is 4-1, losing by 3 to Old Dominion; their only top 200 win was 79-71 over Penn. Tigers are #66 experience team; their opponents are shooting 22.2% on arc, #6 3-point defense in country. Sun Belt teams are 17-9 vs spread away from home; CAA teams are 8-15. Towson starts three seniors, GSU starts three seniors and two juniors.

    Battle for Atlantis
Purdue played in World University Games this summer, which appears to have been a big help as far as this season goes. Boilermakers are 4-0, with 15-point win over Marquette the closest of the four. Boilers are shooting 48.9% on arc, have #3 eFG% in country. Tennessee beat a couple stiffs by 35-31 points to start season; Vols start three sophs, two juniors, have only one senior on their team- they made 12-27 on arc in their last game. Big 14 favorites are 17-11 vs spread, 3-2 away from home; SEC underdogs are 2-2.

Villanova waxed three stiffs to start its season; Wildcats start a freshman, four juniors- they made 29-60 3-pointers in last two games. Wildcats are forcing turnovers 21% of time; their opponents’ possessions are 2nd-shortest in country (0:13.8)- they appear to have decent depth. Western Kentucky split its first two D-I games, losing by 5 to Missouri State, beating a stiff. Big East favorites are 9-5 vs spread; C-USA underdogs are 6-11. Hilltoppers played only seven guys last game; three frosh, three seniors and a junior- they start three seniors.

Arizona won its first three games by 25+ points; they’ve made 50.9% on arc, have #2 eFG% in country, but they’re young, starting two freshmen, though one of them is expected to the the #1 pick in next year’s NBA Draft. NC State is 4-0 against the 2nd-easiest schedule in country up to this point; Wolfpack have forced turnovers 31.1% of time (#1 in country) but they’re going way up in competition here, way up. State starts three seniors but their PG is a sophomore. Pac-12 favorites are 13-13 vs spread, 1-2 away from home; ACC underdogs are 2-3.

SMU is off to a 4-0 start, but against a bottom 15 schedule; Mustangs have made 42% of their 3’s- they’re #307 experience team, are stepping up in class this weekend. Only top 225 team SMU has beaten is #190 UMBC. Northern Iowa beat up on three stiffs since losing by 17 at North Carolina; Panthers play a bottom 15 pace in country, have made 44% of their 3’s so far this month. UNI starts a freshman, two sophs. SMU has only one senior in its rotation. MVC teams are 9-7 vs spread away from home; AAC teams are 8-6.

    Cayman Islands tourney
Wyoming/Cincinnati are both playing 3rd day in a row. Bearcats crushed Richmond Tuesday, making 13-24 on arc, after struggling to beat Buffalo by 6 Monday. Cincy is better than usual on offense this year- making 41.5% of its 3’s. 4-0 Wyoming outscored ULL 25-13 on foul line in 70-61 win Tuesday. Cowboys is #34 experience team but is turning ball over 22.6% of time, which could be very bad news vs very athletic Cincy squad. AAC favorites are 7-10 vs spread, 4-4 away from home; Mountain West underdogs are 4-3.

    Maui Classic
Michigan had a glorified bye yesterday when it whipped D-II Chaminade; Wolverines are 4-1 but need win here to avoid leaving Maui with no D-I wins- they’ve played #305 schedule in country so far. Michigan is forcing turnovers 24.3% of time, but is also making just 31.4% behind the arc. VCU pounded on Cal yesterday after losing by 11 to Marquette on Monday. Rams start two sophs, three seniors. Big 14 favorites are 17-11 vs spread, 3-2 away from home; A-14 underdogs are 6-8 away from home. Both teams are playing for third day in row.

LSU starts freshman, two sophs and it showed last night when Notre Dame bamboozled them by 39 (92-53). Tigers had won tough 77-75 game over Michigan the day before, while Notre Dame played D-II Chaminade. LSU is shooting 63.6% inside arc for season. Teams are shooting 60.6% inside the arc against Marquette. Marquette was 9-33 on arc, 14-28 inside arc in loss to Wichita State yesterday- Eagles won tough game over VCU Monday. Big East teams are 5-3 vs spread away from home; SEC teams are 9-4.

Notre Dame played D-II Chaminade Monday, then crushed LSU last night, while Wichita State had to fight back from down 18 vs Cal Monday, then had fairly tough test Tuesday in 80-66 win over Marquette. Shockers are still without McDuffie, one of their best players- they shot 65.8% inside arc yesterday. Notre Dame has made 44.1% of its 3’s this season- they start three seniors and a junior. ACC favorites are 20-10 vs spread, 9-4 away from home; AAC underdogs are 4-2. Shockers started four seniors in their game yesterday.

    Cancun tournament
Louisiana Tech is 4-0 but hasn’t played anyone ranked higher than #175 this season; Bulldogs led by 18 at half of fairly easy 77-64 win over George Mason Tuesday. Only one guy on Tech played more than 28:00- they start two sophs, two juniors. Evansville upset Fresno State last night; Purple Aces are 5-0 but yesterday was their first top 200 win. Evansville has made 48.1% of its 3’s this year- they were 8-12 vs Fresno. Aces played two guys 36-38:00 yesterday. C-USA favorites are 10-6 against the spread; MVC underdogs are 6-4.

    T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas
UNLV is 4-0 with no wins by less than 15 points, but Utah will be, by far, their toughest test to date. Rebels have a senior PG who led Milwaukee to a 20-13 record two years ago- they also have a big kid (McCoy) who will be in the NBA next year. Utah starts four seniors— they beat Mizzou/Ole Miss in last two games, are top 75 team in experience. Pac-12 favorites are 13-13 vs spread, 1-2 away from home; Mountain West underdogs are 4-3. This game is obviously in Vegas but a mile or two from UNLV campus- these teams had yesterday off.

Belmont is 4-1, with wins over Vandy/Middle Tennessee and 87-83 loss at Washington when they led by 8 at the half- to this point, they’ve played #49 schedule in country. Well-coached Bruins start three juniors, two seniors- they made 14-27 on arc in last game. Providence has made 54.4% of its 3’s (#1 in country) in its 3-1 start, with only loss by 12 at home to Minnesota. Friars start they start two sophs, two seniors. Friars made 9-10 on arc in their last game. Big East favorites are 9-5 vs spread; OVC underdogs are 10-14.

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) Freshman Braxton Beverly scored a season-high 20 points and sparked the decisive late run that helped North Carolina State upset No. 2 Arizona 90-84 in Wednesday's first round at the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Allerik Freeman scored 24 points to lead the Wolfpack (5-0).

Beverly hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 4:19 left, part of a stunning 13-1 run that put the Wolfpack up 86-76 with 1:48 left. He also hit six free throws and assisted on another basket during the spurt.

Allonzo Trier scored 24 of his 27 points after halftime for the Wildcats (3-1), while freshman Deandre Ayton had 27 points and 14 rebounds.

            ---

            No. 5 Villanova 66, Western Kentucky 58

Jalen Brunson scored 18 points for Villanova in the opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis.

The Wildcats (4-0) found themselves in a close game until early in the second half. That's when they ran off a 13-2 burst to push ahead by double figures.

Villanova made 15 of 24 shots (63 percent) after halftime after shooting just 33 percent to lead 27-24 at the break. The Wildcats also got a spark from sophomore Donte DiVincenzo, who scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half.

Darius Thompson scored 16 points for the Hilltoppers (2-2), who shot 44 percent.

            ---

No. 13 Notre Dame 67, No. 6 Wichita St. 66

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) - Martinas Geben hit two free throws with 2.3 seconds left and Notre Dame rallied from a 16-point deficit to win the Maui Invitational.

Notre Dame (6-0) trailed most of the game, but clawed its way back, by slowing the high-scoring Shockers (4-1) and working the ball inside on offense.

Notre Dame pulled within one, but Landry Shamet, having a quiet scoring night, put the Shockers up 64-61 with a running jumper with 1:24 left.

Bonzie Colson, Notre Dame's preseason All-America, cut it back to one on a jumper in the lane. Again, Shamet answered, on a pull-up jumper in the lane and Colson airballed a 3-pointer, but scored on a layup after Matt Farrell stole the inbounds pass.

Zach Brown blocked Farrell's layup, but the Irish got the ball on an baseline inbounds play. Geben cut to the basket and was fouled by Shaquille Morris. He hit both free throws and Wichita State fumbled away its last possession.

Colson finished with 25 points and 11 rebounds.

Brown led the Shockers with 14 points.

            ---

            No. 8 Kentucky 86, Fort Wayne 67

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Nick Richards had career highs of 25 points and 15 rebounds, and Kentucky shot 70 percent in the first half.

Kentucky's 19-of-27 shooting before halftime countered the Mastodons' eight 3-pointers that kept them close for a while. Once Fort Wayne started missing, it couldn't match the length or speed of the young Wildcats (5-1), who eventually led 78-48 with 6:50 remaining on the way to their most decisive win this season.

            Kentucky shot a season-best 33 of 55 (60 percent) and dominated the rebounding 44-21.

Junior guard John Konchar had 19 points for Fort Wayne (3-2).

            ---

            No. 10 Southern California 88, Lehigh 63

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Jonah Mathews scored 18 points, making four of USC's season-high-tying 12 3-pointers, and the Trojans earned their 21st straight non-conference victory.

Bennie Boatwright led the Trojans (4-0) with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Chimezie Metu added 15 points and Elijah Stewart had 13 points.

Kahron Ross led Lehigh (3-2) with 24 points and Lance Tejada added 19. The Mountain Hawks were held to 36 percent shooting and got outrebounded 49-32.

            ---

            No. 11 Miami 57, La Salle 46

READING, Pa. (AP) - Prized freshman Lonnie Walker IV struggled in his return home, but Dewan Huell scored 16 points and Miami remained unbeaten.

Part of Miami's recruiting pitch for the projected NBA lottery pick was a game in his hometown. Walker was held to five points and 2-of-8 shooting, and his woes were contagious. Miami (4-0) shot 37 percent from the field and the Explorers were 0 of 15 from 3-point range.

B.J. Johnson scored 16 points on 6-of-20 shooting for La Salle (3-3) in its third straight loss.

La Salle traveled about 60 miles from campus, but it was a Miami home game and the crowd was solidly behind their local hero's team.

            ---

            No. 12 Cincinnati 78, Wyoming 53

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (AP) - Gary Clark scored 17 points and Kyle Washington had 16 points and 11 rebounds as Cincinnati won the inaugural Cayman Islands Classic.

Clark was named the MVP of the three-game event with 49 points, 28 boards and seven assists.

Clark scored the first nine points of the game and Cincinnati (6-0) extended it to 20-2 after 9 minutes.

Hayden Dalton led Wyoming (4-1) with 15 points.

            ---

            Tennessee 78, No. 18 Purdue 75, OT

Grant Williams scored all 22 of his points after halftime and hit the go-ahead shot with 14.5 seconds left in overtime to lift Tennessee in the opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis.

After P.J. Thompson missed a jumper for the lead, James Daniel hit two free throws with 2.0 seconds left to push the margin to three. The Boilermakers had one more chance to tie, but Kyle Alexander intercepted Dakota Mathias' long inbounds heave to end it.

Tennessee (3-0) shot just 36 percent but dominated the boards and finished with 21 second-chance points.

Carsen Edwards scored 21 points to lead the Boilermakers (4-1).

Tennessee forced overtime when Lamonte Turner buried a tying 3-pointer from near his bench with 5.1 seconds left in regulation. Purdue called a timeout, but Edwards' 3 for the win hit the front rim as the horn sounded.

                              • Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up a terrific Turkey Day…….

                                13) For as long as I could remember, TV on Thanksgiving Day was two NFL games, and then a college game at night; NFL then added a third game at night, but ESPN has really juiced up Turkey Day wth the addition of several college basketball tournaments, giving you a ton of stuff to watch all day and into the evening.

Orlando-Fullerton-Atlantis-Las Vegas-Portland-Brooklyn all hosted tournaments Thursday and thats not even counting the Alaskan Shootout, which isn’t on TV anymore and is in its last year.

ESPN takes a lot of grief for many reasons, but this is a good thing.

                                12) Duke 99, Portland State 81— Score looks like an easy win; it wasn’t. Duke was 31-42 on foul line, Vikings were 9-12. Portland State led 49-45 at the half. But it was more than that.

Duke led by 5 with 8:38 left when the refs gave up Portland State’s Deontae North a technical foul for something he said, which was highly unusual. Why was it unusual/damaging?

                                a) North had scored 24 points in 20:00 for Portland State
                                b) The technical is also a personal foul and it was North’s 5th foul of the game
                                c) North was sitting at the scorer’s table when he got the technical, waiting to check in.

I’ve never seen a guy foul out while sitting at the scorer’s table.

                                11) Chargers 28, Cowboys 6— Dallas is a mess; in their last three games, Cowboys have been outscored 72-6 in second half. 72. to. 6. Major problems.

This score could’ve been a lot worse; Chargers had ball in red zone four times, and only scored 10 points on those four drives, plus they missed a couple PAT’s.

                                10) Vikings 30, Lions 23— Case Keenum is inching into the conversation for MVP of the freakin’ league, but you still read how Keenum still has to be confirmed every week as the starting QB. How many games does Minnesota have to win before Keenum becomes the permanent starter, at least for the rest of this season?

                                9) Redskins 20, Giants 10— Only Giants’ TD was scored by the defense on a tipped ball/INT. Boy do they have some questions to face in the offseason:

                                a) Who will the next coach be?
                                b) Who will the QB be next year?
                                c) Do you give Odell Beckham a big-money contract?
                                d) Will they make the new coach keep Steve Spagnuolo as defensive coordinator?

                                8) Cris Collinsworth told an interesting story on TV near the end of the Redskins’ game:

Jay Gruden played in the Arena League, then was a head coach, then quit coaching and played again for a while. In his second stint as a player, a guy hit Gruden and broke his leg— Gruden had cut the guy when he was coaching.

The guy looked down on Gruden, who was on the ground in pain and said “I got ya back.”

                                7) Western Kentucky 77, Purdue 73— Boilermakers headed to Atlantis as a top 10 team, but now they’ve lost to Tennessee/WKU this week. Good win for Rick Stansbury’s Hilltoppers.

                                6) SMU 66, Arizona 60— Much like Purdue, Wildcats headed to Atlantis as a top 10 team- they were ranked 2nd in country, but now they’re 0-2 this week, also losing to NC State. Arizona is a very young team; talented, but young. We’ll see how they respond to this.

The 7th-place game in the Battle of Atlantis: Purdue-Arizona, two ex-top-10 teams.

                                5) West Virginia 84, Marist 78— West Virginia led by 15, then winless Red Foxes got hot and tied game 67-67- at one point they were 15-18 in 2nd half, 6-8 behind the arc.

Marist’s first three losses: Lehigh, Mass-Lowell, Army. They looked better than that here.

                                4) Ole Miss 31, Mississippi State 28— State QB Fitzgerald broke his leg, ending his fine season. Rebels finish 6-5, but can’t go to a bowl because they’re on double secret probation.

                                3) Arizona State 92, Kansas State 90— K-State scored 1.32 points/possession, which is huge, but they lost. ASU was 29-44 on foul line, Wildcats were 7-9. K-State was 15-32 on arc. Sun Devils are 5-0; Bobby Hurley played four of his starters 37:00+ in this game.

                                2) Florida 108, Stanford 85— Gators looked like world-beaters in this game- they had 96 points with 6:18 left in game. Stanford isn’t very good.

                                1) Arkansas 92, Oklahoma 83— Bill Walton did this game and the Carolina-Portland game; at one point, apparently he wasn’t happy with the officials, so he said “…….the referees need to go back to Foot Locker” because, you know, employees at Foot Locker wear referee’s shirts.

It is great to read Twitter when fans have never heard Walton do a game before, because they get all indignant because Walton is different. It is television; if you don’t like him, hit the damn mute button and watch the game. I enjoy listening to him, I always learn something, but it is rarely about basketball.

People actually get mad because he doesn’t always talk about basketball; get over it.
