    • Inside the Paint - Tuesday
      November 28, 2017

The seventh week of the NBA season tipped off Sunday with favorites going 2-1 on the hardwood but it was the underdogs that posted a 3-0 record against the spread. Brooklyn was the lone ‘dog to win outright as it knocked off Memphis 98-88 on the road.

The setback was the eighth straight for the short-handed Grizzlies and it was also the last game for Memphis head coach David Fizdale. The team relieved him of his services on Monday after a 7-12 start and some pundits felt the termination was a little abrupt. If you ask gamblers, the Grizz were a league-worst 6-13 ATS and that’s not good enough in our industry.

Favorites went 5-3 SU on Monday but the points mattered again with underdogs managing to cover in two of the losses for a 5-3 ATS mark. The Cavaliers (+2) wire-to-wire 113-91 road victory over the 76ers was a wake-up call for folks hopping on ‘The Process’ and even though the Warriors were without Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry, you can’t dismiss Sacramento’s 110-106 road win over Golden State as a 12-point underdog (ML +700).

We have five games on Tuesday and below is my quick handicap.

Miami (10-9 SU, 7-10-2 ATS) at Cleveland (13-7 SU, 7-12-1 ATS)

The first matchup on the board could be the most intriguing as a pair of surging teams meet on NBATV at 7:05 p.m. ET. The Heat have won three straight and four of their last five games while Cleveland enters this game with an eight-game winning streak. The Cavaliers only opened as 3 ½-point favorites and that tells you what the oddsmakers think of their recent run and it should be noted that they’re just 4-4 ATS in those games.

Cleveland is also playing on no rest after beating Philadelphia last night and the Cavaliers have gone 0-3 both SU and ATS in that role this season. The offense has only averaged 98.3 points per game in those contests and that’s led to a 3-0 ‘under’ mark. I note that because Miami’s defense (98.8 PPG) is ranked third in scoring on the road and it’s won five of its last six as a visitor.

The Heat took three of four against the Cavaliers last season but LeBron James sat out two of the setbacks and when he suited up at home, they won by 30 points as 12-point favorites. Even if he plays tonight, it could be tough backing Cleveland knowing how poor it’s been at home for bettors (6-4 SU, 0-9-1 ATS). The Heat, surprisingly, have been a smarter investment on the road (6-4 ATS) than at home (1-6-2 ATS).

Washington (10-9 SU, 9-10 ATS) at Minnesota (12-8 SU, 8-10-2 ATS)

No overnight line was posted on this non-conference tilt due to injuries. Point guard John Wall (knee) is expected to miss two weeks for the Wizards while Timberwolves PG Jeff Teague (Achilles) has been tabbed ‘questionable’ for this game.

Washington has dropped four of its last five games, which includes last Saturday’s 108-105 home collapse to Portland as it was outscored 35-22 in the fourth quarter. Minnesota has gone 2-3 SU over its last five and it has burned bettors with a 0-4-1 ATS mark during this span. Last Wednesday’s 124-118 home win against Orlando was a tough beat if you had the Wolves (-7) considering they were outscored 38-18 by the Magic in the fourth quarter.

I would expect the T-Wolves to win this game but I’m hesitant to back them as favorites knowing they’ve gone 3-6 against teams above .500 and their record versus the Eastern Conference (3-5 SU, 1-6-1 ATS) is far from good.

Phoenix (7-14 SU, 8-12-1 ATS) at Chicago (3-15 SU, 8-9-1 ATS)

This matchup pits two teams headed to next year’s NBA Lottery and it’s hard to make a case for either squad. Chicago enters this game with the worst record in the league and Phoenix isn’t much better. No overnight number was posted due to the status of Suns shooting guard Devin Booker, who remains ‘questionable’ with a toe injury. If Booker doesn’t play, Chicago might close as the favorite and that would be just the second time (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) in that role this season. The Bulls have only played seven games at the United Center and they’ve gone 2-5 SU and 4-3 ATS.

Meanwhile, the Suns are 3-5 SU and 4-3-1 ATS on the road. The pair just recently played on Nov. 19 in the desert and Phoenix earned a 113-105 decision over Chicago as a 2 ½-point favorite. The ‘over’ (215 ½) barely connected and three of the last four in this series have gone to the high side.

Betting the total on this game isn’t an easy handicap. Phoenix (115.9 PPG) has the worst scoring defense in the league and that’s helped them produce the best ‘over’ (13-8) mark. However, Chicago has been a solid ‘under’ lean (11-7) especially at home (6-1).

Milwaukee (9-9 SU, 7-9-2 ATS) at Sacramento (6-14 SU, 8-10-2 ATS)

I’m not surprised the Bucks are favorites in this spot but the opener (-7) seems a little healthy for a team that’s 4-5 as a visitor this season and that includes a 2-2 record both SU and ATS when laying points. I doubt Bucks coach Jason Kidd looks at ATS numbers, but last season his team was a solid look (8-2 SU, 5-5 ATS) as road favorites.

Milwaukee is clearly deeper and more talented than Sacramento, but the Kings have been respectable at home (4-5 SU, 6-3 ATS) and they could have an extra bounce in their step after last night’s upset over Golden State. However, Sacramento is 0-3 (0-2-1 ATS) on no rest this season and it’s just 1-4 (2-2-1 ATS) after a win. Another glaring stat that makes me lean Milwaukee is based off Sacramento’s record vs. the East, which sits 1-7 and the seven losses came by an eye-opening margin of 24.5 PPG.

This series has been a stalemate the last three seasons with the two teams going 3-3 against one another and both teams have notched 2-1 records on the road during this span while the ‘over’ has gone 6-0.

Denver (11-8 SU, 8-11 ATS) at Utah (9-11 SU, 10-10 ATS)

These teams met in their season opener on Oct. 18 and Utah captured a 106-96 win over Denver as a 2 ½-point home favorite. The Nuggets were in complete control of this game but they ran out of gas late and were outscored by 19 points in the second-half. That’s been the theme in this series with Denver dropping its last six visits to the Jazz from Salt Lake City.

The line (Jazz -1 ½) is in the same neighborhood tonight and you can make an argument both ways. Despite not having center Rudy Gobert, the Jazz have played a tad faster and that’s led to a 3-1 mark over their last four games. Playing at that pace would seem to favor Denver but it’s hard to get a read on Mike Malone’s team. They’ve been off since last Friday when they beat the struggling Grizzlies 104-92 at home but the Nuggets are 0-3 both SU and ATS in their last three games off victories. Plus the home and away numbers for Utah (8-4 SU, 8-4 ATS) and Denver (3-6 SU, 2-7 ATS) are tough to ignore. However, that opening line makes me lean to the visitor tonight.

Despite watching the ‘under’ go 6-1 in the last seven meetings between the pair I would give the ‘over’ (206 ½) a good look as well. This is the highest total posted in this series since 2012 and the oddsmakers are starting to adjust to Utah’s revamped style. The Jazz have picked up the pace with Gobert out and they’re taking a lot more 3-pointers as well. Denver’s defense (110.2) hasn’t been great on the road and I would expect both teams to get over the century mark tonight. ESPN will provide national coverage of this game at 10:05 p.m. ET.

        • NBA roundup: James ejected, but Cavs win
          November 28, 2017

CLEVELAND -- Kevin Love scored a season-high 38 points, LeBron James was tossed from the game, and Dwyane Wade put a hurting on his old team in the Cleveland Cavaliers' 108-97 win over the Miami Heat on Tuesday.

The Cavs, who led the game by as many as 34 points, have won nine straight for their longest regular-season winning streak since Jan. 15-Feb. 5, 2015. The run began after they started the year 5-7.

Love added nine rebounds and shot 14 of 17 from the foul line in 26 minutes.

James was ejected with 1:59 left in the third quarter for arguing a non-call with referee Kane Fitzgerald. James screamed at Fitzgerald for not calling a foul against Hassan Whiteside on James' drive to the hoop.

James, who was ejected for the first time in his career, finished with 21 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Wade, who like James once starred with the Heat, scored 17 points off the Cleveland bench.

The Cavs set a season high with 75 points in the first half, and Love's 32 points were tied for the most by an opponent in a half in Miami history.

Dion Waiters led the Heat with 21 points.

          Wizards 92, Timberwolves 89

MINNEAPOLIS -- Otto Porter Jr. scored 22 points, including the go-ahead jump shot with 25 seconds remaining, to give Washington a come-from-behind win.

Porter scored 17 of his points in the second half as Washington erased a 13-point deficit and won for the second time in six games. Leading scorer Bradley Beal was held to eight points on 2-of-11 shooting, but the bench was pivotal with the Wizards (11-9) missing John Wall for the second straight game due to an injured knee.

Karl-Anthony Towns had 20 points and 17 rebounds for his league-leading 17th double-double for the Timberwolves (12-9). Making his second NBA start in place of injured Timberwolves point guard Jeff Teague, Tyus Jones had season highs of 12 points and seven assists.

          Suns 104, Bulls 99

CHICAGO -- Devin Booker scored 33 points and TJ Warren added 25 as Phoenix snapped a three-game losing streak.

Tyler Ulis finished with 14 points for the Suns (8-14), who built a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter and then had to hold on to beat the Bulls for the second time in nine days.

Alex Len grabbed 18 rebounds for the Suns to go along with 13 points.

Justin Holiday led the Bulls with 25 points, and Kris Dunn scored 24 points for Chicago (3-16), which dropped its sixth straight game.

                  • Wednesday's Tip Sheet
                    November 28, 2017

Game of the Night: Warriors at Lakers – 10:35 PM EST

It’s rare to see the Warriors (15-6 SU, 9-12 ATS) lose at home, but that was the case on Monday when Sacramento tripped up Golden State as 13-point underdogs, 110-106. Granted, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant each sat out for the defending champions, but it was third home loss in 10 games at Oracle Arena this season. Golden State embarks on a six-game road trip, as the Warriors face the Lakers at Staples Center twice over the next three weeks.

Los Angeles (8-12 SU, 9-11 ATS) suffered its second straight loss on Monday as the Lakers fell to the Clippers, 120-115 as 4 ½-point underdogs. The Lakers had five players in double-figures, while shooting 48% from the floor. The one player who didn’t score at least 10 points and struggled from the field was rookie Lonzo Ball, who knocked down only 1-of-7 shots and put up just three points. The Lakers moved to 5-1 to the OVER in their past six games, while allowing at least 109 points in five of those contests.

Curry is expected to suit up on Wednesday, while Durant is questionable after missing the past three games with a sprained ankle. The Lakers shocked the Warriors as 11 ½-point home underdogs in their first matchup last season before Golden State won each of the final three meetings by double-digits. Seven of the past eight matchups between these division rivals have finished UNDER the total, as Los Angeles was limited to 94 points or less in the final two games last season against Golden State.

                    Fizzled Out

The Grizzlies (7-12 SU, 6-13 ATS) were a playoff team last season before getting ousted in the opening round by the Spurs. Memphis went through roster changes in the offseason and an injury to point guard Mike Conley early on this season which resulted in an eight-game losing streak. Following Sunday’s home loss to Brooklyn, the Grizzlies pulled the plug on head coach David Fizdale after a shade over 100 regular season games on the sidelines.

During this eight-game skid, Memphis has not covered once, while being limited to 94 points or less in five straight contests. The Spurs (13-7 SU, 10-10 ATS) are going in the opposite direction by winning four of their past five games, while coming off a 115-108 triumph over Dallas on Monday in point guard Tony Parker’s regular season debut. In five meetings last season at the AT&T Center (including playoffs), the Spurs compiled a 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS mark against the Grizzlies, as Memphis busted the 100-point mark only once.

                    Crashing Thunder

The Thunder (8-11 SU, 8-11 ATS) had high expectations this season following the offseason acquisitions of Paul George and Carmelo Anthony. However, Oklahoma City sits in last place of the Northwest division nearly 20 games into the season, while trying to improve on a dreadful 2-8 SU/ATS record on the highway. The Thunder has dropped six straight road contests as OKC travels to Orlando, but the good news is Billy Donovan’s team has won in both its away opportunities against Eastern Conference foes in blowouts over Chicago and Milwaukee.

The early season magic for Orlando (8-13 SU, 9-11-1 ATS) has disappeared, as Frank Vogel’s squad failed to win a contest on its recent four-game road trip. In fact, the Magic is winless in its previous nine games, while last picking up a victory on November 10 at Phoenix. The Magic has dropped three straight home meetings with the Thunder, including a pair of overtime thrillers the last two seasons.

                    Big Easy Does It

A pair of Western Conference teams looking to make the move towards the postseason meet in New Orleans as the Pelicans host the Timberwolves. The Pelicans (11-9 SU, 12-8 ATS) had their three-game winning streak halted at Golden State on Saturday, 110-95 as 10 ½-point underdogs, while finishing UNDER the total for the third straight contest. New Orleans has played well recently at Smoothie King Center by winning four of the past home games, including recent triumphs over San Antonio and Oklahoma City.

The Wolves (12-9 SU, 8-11-2 ATS) head to New Orleans with no rest following Tuesday’s loss to Washington as Minnesota is 1-2 SU/ATS on the second end of a back-to-back. Minnesota held off New Orleans in their first matchup earlier this month, 104-98 as two-point underdogs, avenging a three-game sweep by the Pelicans last season. The Wolves have struggled in the road underdog role this season by posting a 2-4 SU/ATS in this situation.

                    Knicked Off

Both the Heat and Knicks are coming off double-digit losses in their last game as the two old Eastern Conference rivals hook up at Madison Square Garden. Miami (10-10 SU, 7-11-2 ATS) saw its three-game winning streak come to an abrupt halt in a 108-97 setback at Cleveland on Tuesday as the Heat allowed 75 first half points. The Heat has seen plenty of success recently when they travel to Manhattan by winning six consecutive visits to the Garden, while the Knicks haven’t scored more than 91 points in any of those defeats.

The Knicks (10-10 SU, 12-8 ATS) trailed the Blazers by 26 points heading into the fourth quarter of Monday’s 103-91 setback to Portland. New York suffered its first home ATS loss in the last nine tries, while falling to 9-3 in its past 12 games at the Garden. The Knicks are trending in the wrong direction by dropping three straight games, as their last skid of this length came during the 0-3 start to begin the season.

                    Head-to-Head Matchups

-- The Wizards held off the 76ers in the season opener, 120-115, but Philadelphia cashed as 6 ½-point underdogs. Philadelphia had its six-game ATS winning streak end in Monday’s blowout loss to Cleveland, but the 76ers have covered in five of the past six meetings with the Wizards since February 2016.

-- Phoenix’s best rest situation this season has been with zero days off. The Suns own a 3-2 SU/ATS record on the second of a back-to-back following Tuesday’s contest at Chicago as Phoenix heads to Detroit. The Pistons have posted a solid 7-2 record at their new home at Little Caesars Arena, while capturing four of the previous five matchups with the Suns.

-- Charlotte and Toronto split the four-game series last season as the two Eastern Conference foes meet at the Air Canada Center. The Hornets haven’t had much luck on the highway this season by winning just once in nine tries away from Spectrum Center, while the Raptors have won six of seven at home.

-- Earlier this month, the Rockets ripped the Pacers in Indianapolis, 118-95 as 3 ½-point road favorites to beat Indiana for the first time in four tries. The two teams hook up again, this time at Toyota Center as the Rockets shoot for their sixth consecutive victory. Indiana has fared better of late by going 6-1 SU/ATS in the last seven games following a 6-8 start.

-- The Nets and Mavericks have combined for 12 victories this season, but both these teams have been on fire from an ATS standpoint of late. Brooklyn has covered six straight games, while Dallas is riding a 5-2 ATS run. Dallas has swept Brooklyn in each of the past two seasons, but the Nets own a 4-1 ATS mark in its past five trips to American Airlines Center.

                    • NBA notebook: Clippers' Griffin reportedly out two months
                      November 28, 2017

Los Angeles Clippers star forward Blake Griffin could be sidelined for two months while recovering from a sprained MCL in his left knee, according to an ESPN report Tuesday.

Griffin, 28, sustained the injury in the fourth quarter of Monday night's game against the rival Los Angeles Lakers. Examinations revealed no structural damage in Griffin's knee, per ESPN.

Griffin had 26 points, 11 rebounds and six assists over 36 minutes in the Clippers' 120-115 victory against the Lakers before exiting with the injury.

A former No. 1 overall pick and five-time All-Star, Griffin is averaging 23.6 points and 7.9 rebounds this season for the Clippers (8-11).

--The Golden State Warriors are hoping to have at least one star player back from injury when they open a six-game road trip against the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center on Wednesday.

Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant each sat out a 110-106 loss to the visiting Sacramento Kings on Monday. Curry has a bruised right hand and Durant has been dealing with a sprained left ankle.

Golden State coach Steve Kerr seemed optimistic that Curry would return against the Lakers. Durant is less likely to play.

--Former NBA player Ben Gordon was arrested on a felony robbery charge in Los Angeles, the latest in a string of incidents over the past few months.

Gordon, 34, allegedly punched the manager of a downtown Los Angeles apartment complex on Saturday and pulled a knife. Gordon took money from the man that he said was his security deposit.

Gordon was arrested on Saturday and released Tuesday on $50,000 bail.

Gordon reportedly made more than $84 million in salary during his 11-year NBA career that ended in 2015.

The latest arrest occurred the same week in which Gordon was arrested in New York City for driving with a forged license plate.

In late October, Gordon was ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluation from an incident with a woman at a store he owns in Mount Vernon, N.Y. In June, Gordon was arrested for repeatedly pulling fire alarms at the downtown L.A. apartment complex where there was no indication of a fire.

--Memphis Grizzlies star Marc Gasol insists he had nothing to do with the firing of coach David Fizdale, which occurred one day after Gasol was furious that he was benched for the fourth quarter of the team's eighth consecutive loss.

In fact, Gasol said he was surprised by the timing of the move and didn't know about the firing until after the decision was made.

Memphis general manager Chris Wallace said the firing of the second-year coach was due to the team being underachievers and not related to the rift between Fizdale and Gasol.

J.B. Bickerstaff was named interim coach.

--Phoenix Suns center Alex Len admittedly is frustrated with his recent lack of playing time.

"I want to be out there, and I want to compete," the 7-foot-1 Len told AZCentral.com after sitting out two of the Suns' last three games.

"I put in the work hoping to show my skills on the court. So when you're not able to help your team, it's frustrating."

Phoenix interim coach Jay Triano has used the tandem of Tyson Chandler and Greg Monroe at center.

Len is averaging 9.0 points and a career-best 9.3 rebounds in just 22.9 minutes per game.

                            November 30, 2017

LOS ANGELES -- Stephen Curry scored 13 of his 28 points in overtime to lift the Golden State Warriors to a 127-123 victory against the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday.

Curry was 1 of 7 from 3-point range before starting overtime with back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Warriors a 115-109 lead. He shot 5 of 6 from the free-throw line in the final 1:14 to hold off Los Angeles.

Kevin Durant scored 29 points and Klay Thompson had 20 for the Warriors. Draymond Green had 15 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists, and Zaza Pachulia matched his season high with 11 points

                            Rockets 118, Pacers 97

HOUSTON -- James Harden posted 29 points, eight rebounds and 10 assists as Houston beat Indiana.

With the Rockets leading 70-64, Harden scored 13 points over the final 3:54 of the third, including three consecutive 3-pointers after starting the game 0 of 6 from behind the arc. When Harden drilled a 3-pointer with nine seconds left in the period, the Rockets secured an 89-71 lead en route to their sixth straight victory.

Clint Capela also posted a double-double for Houston with 22 points and 13 rebounds, and Ryan Anderson fell a rebound short while scoring 19 points. Thaddeus Young led Indiana with 23 points.

                            Spurs 104, Grizzlies 95

SAN ANTONIO -- LaMarcus Aldridge scored a season-high 41 points, tying the most points he has scored for San Antonio, in a victory over Memphis.

Aldridge's performance was his best in the regular season in the three years he has played for the Spurs and his fourth 30-plus point game of the season. He had 41 points in a playoff game in 2016 against Oklahoma City in his first year in San Antonio. Patty Mills added 13 points for San Antonio, and Kyle Anderson and Tony Parker contributed 10 points apiece.

Tyreke Evans scored 22 points for the Grizzlies, who have lost nine consecutive games. The contest was the first for interim Memphis coach J.B. Bickerstaff, who replaced the fired David Fizdale.

                            Magic 121, Thunder 108

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Aaron Gordon scored 40 points, and Orlando snapped a nine-game losing streak by beating Oklahoma City.

Gordon dominated the game by hitting 13 of 23 shots, including six of 12 from 3-point range. He produced his second career 40-point game and fell one shy of his career high set Oct. 24 against the Brooklyn Nets.

The Thunder lost their third consecutive game and their fifth in the past six despite getting 37 points and 11 rebounds from Russell Westbrook. Paul George scored 22 points and Carmelo Anthony had 16 points for Oklahoma City.

                            76ers 118, Wizards 113

PHILADELPHIA -- Rookie Ben Simmons collected career highs of 31 points and 18 rebounds as Philadelphia held off Washington.

Joel Embiid had 25 points, 14 boards and four blocked shots for the 76ers, who closed out their season-high, six-game homestand with their fourth victory. Simmons, who entered the game shooting 56.6 percent at the free throw-line, was repeatedly fouled intentionally in the fourth quarter. He went 12 of 24 in the quarter and 15 of 29 in the game.

Bradley Beal scored 21 points for the Wizards despite sitting out the last 15 minutes of the first half with a facial contusion.

                            Pistons 131, Suns 107

DETROIT -- Reggie Jackson had a season-high 23 points and five assists as Detroit never trailed in thumping Phoenix.

Tobias Harris and Avery Bradley contributed 20 points apiece for the Pistons, who shot 57.3 percent and won for the fourth time in five games. Andre Drummond supplied 13 points, seven rebounds and a career-high tying seven assists.

Devin Booker's 22 points led the Suns, who lost for the fourth time in five games. Rookie Josh Jackson had a career-high 20 points and seven rebounds, and Greg Monroe added 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists for Phoenix.

                            Timberwolves 120, Pelicans 102

NEW ORLEANS -- Andrew Wiggins scored 28 points, and Minnesota defeated New Orleans.

Minnesota took control midway through the second quarter after Pelicans All-Star forward Anthony Davis was ejected for the first time in his six-year career after getting two technical fouls. Jrue Holiday led New Orleans with 27 points.

                            Knicks 115, Heat 86

NEW YORK -- Enes Kanter had 22 points and 14 rebounds, and Courtney Lee added 17 points as New York defeated Miami.

The Knicks snapped a three-game losing streak despite the loss of the NBA's fourth-leading scorer, Kristaps Porzingis, less than three minutes into the game with a sprained ankle. Porzingis had X-rays done on his ankle that came back negative, and the Knicks announced quickly that he was able to return, but he didn't.

Kelly Olynyk had 18 points to lead the Heat, who shot only 38.1 percent from the field and were outrebounded 52-31.

                            Raptors 126, Hornets 113

TORONTO -- Kyle Lowry scored a season-best 36 points with six assists and five rebounds, and DeMar DeRozan added 30 points with six assists and four rebounds as Toronto defeated Charlotte.

Dwight Howard had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Hornets, who lost their third straight. Charlotte played without All-Star point guard Kemba Walker, who has a shoulder injury.

                            Nets 109, Mavericks 104

DALLAS -- DeMarre Carroll scored 22 points and Brooklyn finished off a winning road trip by slipping past Dallas.

Carroll, back in the lineup after missing one game with an upper respiratory infection, knocked down 7 of 14 shots as the Nets went 2-1 on a three-game trek in the Western Conference. Carroll scored 15 in the third quarter in only his second 20-point game this season.

The Nets also received 19 points and six assists from Spencer Dinwiddie, plus 16 points and 10 rebounds from Trevor Booker. Harrison Barnes led Dallas with 17 points, and Maxi Kleber added 16.
