      • Inside the Paint - Saturday
        January 20, 2018

NBA bettors could be hesitant to pull the trigger on Saturday’s action after the favorites got knocked around on the hardwood last night. The ‘chalk’ went 2-5 straight up and 1-6 against the spread and total players riding the high side had to deal with a 5-2 ‘under’ record.

We’ve got nine contests slated for today and I’m going to bounce around the league with my quick handicap.

Game of the Night – Warriors at Rockets (ABC, 8:35 p.m. ET)

Golden State (37-9 SU, 21-24-1 ATS) will be looking to conclude its current five-game road trip with a perfect record on Saturday as it meets Houston (31-12 SU, 21-21-1 ATS) from the Toyota Center.

The Warriors opened as 4 ½-point road favorites and this will be tied for the second lowest point-spread that they’ve given this season. Golden State was a 3 ½-point road favorite at Charlotte in early December but they didn’t have Stephen Curry or Draymond Green available.

This will be the third meeting between the teams this season and the visitors have captured each of the first two contests. Houston surprised Golden State 122-121 on opening night as a 9 ½-point road underdog as it closed the game with a 34-20 run in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors avenged that setback recently on Jan. 4 with a 124-114 win at Houston as 4 ½-point road favorites. Curry and Klay Thompson combined for 57 points while Draymond Green (17-14-10) posted a triple-double.

Houston didn’t have James Harden or Chris Paul for that contest due to injuries but Golden State was also without Kevin Durant. All three will be in action on Saturday but the Rockets still won’t have Trevor Ariza or Gerald Green as they serve out their suspension.

The Rockets have gone 16-6 SU and 9-12-1 ATS at home this season and this will be the second time that they’re listed as underdogs. As a fact, they’ve only been ‘dogs at home three times in the last two seasons and they’ve gone 0-3 both SU and ATS with two of the losses coming to Golden State.

The latest future odds have Golden State listed as a 10/17 odds-on favorite (Bet $100 to win $58) to win the NBA Finals and you could argue that the odds should be even shorter.

It’s hard to see anybody beating them in a seven-game series yet alone on any given night. Golden State’s road numbers (21-3 SU, 12-12 ATS) have been off the charts and they enter this game with a 14-game winning streak as visitors. For our purposes, they’re a respectable 8-6 ATS during this span while laying healthy numbers.

I wouldn’t advise playing against the Warriors tonight but they’ve got three home games on deck (Knicks, Wolves, Celtics) that aren’t that easy and you should get a good price due to the inflated numbers on Golden State at home.

Tonight’s total is also jacked up a little too much, hovering between 233 and 234 as of Saturday morning.

Houston has been a solid ‘over’ bet at home (14-8) and that includes an 8-1 run to the high side heading into this game. Golden State has watched the ‘over’ go 13-11 on the road and bettors got clipped on high wagers in their two most recent games because the opponents (Cavaliers, Bulls) ran out of gas.

The first two meetings this season between the pair went ‘over’ but that was preceded with a 6-1 ‘under’ run.

        10-9-8 76ers

Philadelphia (21-20 SU, 23-18 ATS) has been in great form again, winning and covering six of its last seven games. That record would be perfect if it wasn’t for a loss to the Celtics (114-103) at the O2 Arena from London on Jan. 11.

On Saturday, Milwaukee (23-21 SU, 18-21-5 ATS) pays a visit and seeing the 76ers open as 6 ½-point home favorites set off the alarms for me. I thought the line was too high and whenever I see that, I usually lean with the opinion of the oddsmakers. However, the Bucks won't have Giannis Antetokounmpo (knee) active and most books went to -7 quickly.

Coupled with Philadelphia’s hot run, you can’t ignore the fact that Milwaukee hasn’t been great on the road (9-12 SU, 11-9-1 ATS) and it hasn’t been in great form. The Bucks are 2-4 SU and 1-5 ATS in their last six games and one of the wins came against Orlando.

Last season, this series watched the visitor win and cover all four games. However, the home teams pulled off a three-game sweep in the 2015-16 campaign. Perhaps it will revert back to that trend tonight.

        Hotlanta Trap?

The betting public is starting to catch up with Chicago (17-28 SU, 27-16-12 ATS) as a formidable team and wager after a dismal 3-20 start. The club has gone 14-8 since that rough patch and it’s churned out an impressive 17-5 ATS mark while the ‘over’ has also gone 17-5.

It does make you wonder why a surging Chicago team is listed as a short underdog (+1 ½) to one of the worst teams in the league on Saturday. Despite the losing record, Atlanta (13-31 SU, 24-18-2 ATS) has been competitive on the hardwood and profitable for bettors, which is what matters to us.

The Hawks have gone 9-12 SU and 12-9 ATS at home, which includes a recent 5-1 record over their last six games. The one loss came to Brooklyn (110-105) with the Hawks closing as three-point favorites.

These teams played on Oct. 26 and Chicago capture a 91-86 win over Atlanta from the United Center as a two-point favorite.

This game tips off a little earlier on Saturday at 5:05 p.m. ET.

        Back-to-Back

Four clubs will be playing on no rest Saturday and listed below are their records when facing back-to-back spots and notable trends as well. Three of the four will be on the road while the Jazz are playing two in a row from Salt Lake City, which is very rare.

Toronto (3-3 SU, 3-3 ATS, 3-3 O/U) at Minnesota: The Raptors have gone 12-7 versus the Western Conference this season but six of the losses came on the road. This will be the first meeting between the pair this season and the home team has won the last four encounters while the 'over' has gone 4-0 too.

Memphis (3-5 SU, 4-5 ATS, 5-2-1 O/U) at New Orleans: The Grizzlies have won their last two games on no rest and will be searching for a season-high fourth straight win in this matchup. Memphis has won and covered both meetings against New Orleans this season.

Miami (3-4 SU, 2-5 ATS, 3-4 O/U) at Charlotte: The Heat have scored 117, 114 and 111 in its last three games on no rest, which has resulted in a 3-0 ‘over’ mark. Miami lost to Brooklyn last night and it has gone 5-0 both SU and ATS in its last five after a loss.

Utah (5-4 SU, 7-2 ATS, 4-5 O/U) vs. L.A. Clippers: The Jazz have gone 4-0 both SU and ATS at home on no rest. These teams split the first two regular season encounters, both games taking place at the Staples Center from Los Angeles. The Clippers aren’t expected to have center DeAndre Jordan (ankle) but you could be hard pressed to back the Jazz, who have lost three straight and four of their last five at home.

        • Thunder thump Cavs 148-124, keep LeBron shy of 30,000 points
          January 20, 2018

CLEVELAND (AP) LeBron James couldn't get to 30,000 career points and he and his Cleveland teammates couldn't stop Paul George, Russell Westbrook or Carmelo Anthony as the Oklahoma City Thunder thumped the Cavaliers 148-124 on Saturday for their fourth straight win.

Oklahoma City tied the record for the most points scored against Cleveland in a regulation game. Philadelphia scored 148 back in 1972.

George scored 36, Westbrook had 23 and 20 assists and Anthony scored a season-high 29 as the Thunder embarrassed the Eastern Conference champions, whose defensive issues aren't improving. Cleveland has lost 10 of 14.

James finished with 18 points and is seven shy of becoming the seventh player in NBA history to reach the 30,000-point plateau. His next chance is Tuesday when the Cavs visit San Antonio.

          ROCKETS 116, WARRIORS 108

HOUSTON (AP) - Chris Paul scored 33 points and 11 rebounds, James Harden had 22 points and Houston held off Golden State to snap its 14-game road winning streak.

Harden stepped back from Stephen Curry for a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to make it 114-108 with 1:10 left. Harden then blocked Curry's 3-point attempt after a timeout, and Paul made two free throws with 28 seconds left.

Golden State lost away from home for the first time since Nov. 22. The Warriors had won seven straight in Houston.

Kevin Durant led Golden State with 26 points, Draymond Green had 21 and Curry added 19 on a night he went 5 of 15 on 3-point attempts.

          76ERS 116, BUCKS 94

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Joel Embiid had 29 points and nine rebounds and Philadelphia pulled away from undermanned Milwaukee for its seventh win in eight games.

Ben Simmons added 16 points and nine assists, and Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot added 16 points in a rare start as the Sixers (22-20) moved past Milwaukee (23-22) for sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

Khris Middleton had 23 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists for the Bucks in their second straight loss. They were without top scorer Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was sitting out the first of two games to rest a sore right knee.

Fellow starter Malcolm Brogdon (family matter) also wasn't available. Tony Snell (15 points) and Sterling Brown (14 points) moved into the lineup, and the Bucks rallied from 16 points down to tie it before fading in the fourth quarter.

          TIMBERWOLVES 115, RAPTORS 109

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Andrew Wiggins scored 29 points and Karl-Anthony Towns had all 22 of his points in the second half as Minnesota rallied from an 11-point first-half deficit to beat Toronto.

Playing without leading scorer Jimmy Butler, the Wolves managed to overcome Towns' early foul trouble and hot perimeter shooting by the Raptors to snap a two-game skid.

Kyle Lowry led Toronto with a season-high 40 points on 14-for-25 shooting, including 6 of 10 from behind the arc. The Raptors shot 54 percent in the first half, when they led by as many as 11.

          JAZZ 125, CLIPPERS 113

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Donovan Mitchell scored 23 points and Utah close out Los Angeles.

Despite missing starting guard Rodney Hood because of a leg injury, Utah set season bests for points in the first quarter (39) and first half (76). It never trailed while ending the Clippers' six-game winning streak.

Lou Williams paced the Clippers with 31 points, 10 steals and seven assists, and he helped cut the lead to single digits in the fourth quarter. Blake Griffin added 25 points and eight rebounds.

          PELICANS 111, GRIZZLIES 104

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Jrue Holiday scored 13 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter, DeMarcus Cousins had 24 points and 10 rebounds, and New Orleans beat Memphis.

Anthony Davis had 21 points and 12 rebounds but did not score his first points of the second half until he dunked with 1:15 to go in the game, giving the Pelicans a 108-102 lead.

Darius Miller added 12 points in a reserve role for New Orleans, which never trailed but very nearly blew a 21-point lead.

          BULLS 113, HAWKS 97

ATLANTA (AP) - Robin Lopez scored 20 points, Lauri Markkanen added 19 and Chicago easily beat Atlanta.

The Bulls, coming off a seven-point home loss to defending NBA champion Golden State three days ago, have won four of five. They never trailed, taking an 11-pont lead midway through the first quarter on Lopez's dunk and going up 17 on Markkanen's dunk in the closing seconds of the first half.

Dennis Schroder scored 18 points and Dewayne Dedmon had 11 for Atlanta, which showed why it's spent the season at or near the bottom of the NBA standings.

          TRAIL BLAZERS 117, MAVERICKS 108

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Damian Lillard hit his first nine shots - including seven 3-pointers - en route to 31 points, and Portland beat Dallas.

Lillard shot 10 of 15 from the floor and handed out nine assists. CJ McCollum added 26 points for Portland, which won its third straight game overall and season-best sixth straight at home.

Wesley Matthews led Dallas with 23 points. Dirk Nowitzki and Dennis Smith Jr. scored 21 points each, with Nowitzki reaching a season high.

          HEAT 106, HORNETS 105

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Kelly Olynyk scored 14 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter, including a free throw with 0.2 seconds left, to help Miami erase a five-point deficit in the final 34 seconds and stun Charlotte.

Wayne Ellington had 26 points on six 3-pointers, Joe Johnson had 22 points and Olynyk was brilliant down the stretch.

Nic Batum scored a season-high 26 points and Kemba Walker had 22 for Charlotte, which had a two-game winning streak snapped.

              Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday…….

              13) Oklahoma State 83, Oklahoma 81 OT— Trae Young scored 48 points, but it took some effort- he was 8-20 on the arc, 6-19 inside the arc, 12-12 on the line. He had 8 assists, 7 turnovers— no other Sooner scored in double figures.

In his last three games, Young is 20-48 on the arc, 17-39 inside the arc, 17-23 on the line, with 21 assists, 28 turnovers. He has the ball a lot.

Sooners were down 25-6 in this game, fought back to force OT, but Cowboys win to split the Bedlam series this season.

              12) Fresno State-Air Force basketball game was postponed because of the government being shut down— all athletic activities at the Air Force Academy were postponed.

              11) Auburn 79, Georgia 65— Dawgs led 40-26 at halftime, but Auburn started second half on a 31-4 run and won going away.

              10) Kansas freshman Billy Preston isn’t at Kansas anymore; he signed up to play in the Bosnian pro basketball league, figuring he was never going to become eligible to play for the Jayhawks this season, after he was in a car accident and questions arose over who bought the car he was driving.

              9) UNLV 79, Colorado State 74— Rebels scored the last 14 points of the game; if you took five points with the hometown Rams in this game, a push wasn’t what you had in mind. UNLV is 3-0 on road in Mountain West, but 0-3 at home. Go figure.

              8) USC 74, Oregon State 67— Trojans sweep their Oregon trip for first time since 2008.

              7) Thunder 148, Cavaliers 124— Cleveland is 3-18-1 vs spread at home; they’ve lost nine of their last 12 games overall.

              6) I’m totally convinced that in college basketball, one of the most important skills for a player to have is getting loose balls. Not rebounds over the rim, but long rebounds off missed 3-pointers, and deflected passes. There are so many of those in college ball now- the ability to anticipate where those loose balls are going to go often decides who wins games.

              5) Kansas 70, Baylor 67— Jayhawks outscored Baylor 9-0 over last 2:51 to pull this game out; they are 6-1 in Big X, with no wins by more than six points.

              4) Florida 66, Kentucky 64— Wildcats lost three of their last five games, are just 4-3 in SEC.

              3) St Mary’s 72, Pacific 69— Gaels had bit of a hangover after winning at Gonzaga, but they got by the surging Tigers, who had their 5-game winning streak snapped.

              2) Upsets of the Day:
              NC-Wilmington 73 (+8), Towson State 71 OT
              Iowa State (+7) 70, Texas Tech 52
              Coastal Carolina (+7) 74, Troy State 73
New Mexico (+6.5) 79, San Diego State 75
              Portland (+6.5) 72, LMU 65
              Ohio U (+6) 72, Eastern Michigan 66
              Washington (+6) 72, Colorado 62

              1) Oregon 94, UCLA 91— Bill Walton insinuated that the Bruins have internal problems; don’t forget they suspended those two players from the shoplifting debacle in China, and one of those kids was supposed to be a starter.

UCLA was down big in this game, but stormed back and damn near won the game, but instead they’ve lost three games in a row— Bruins are only 4-4 in the Pac-12.

                  • Payton, Magic overcome Irving's 40 points to beat Celtics
                    January 21, 2018

SAN ANTONIO (AP) Victor Oladipo scored 19 points and the Indiana Pacers defeated San Antonio 94-86 on Sunday night, snapping the Spurs' 14-game home winning streak.

Darren Collison added 15 points for Indiana, which snapped a three-game losing streak in San Antonio.

The Spurs lost at home for the third time this season and the first since Nov. 10 against Milwaukee.

Pau Gasol had 14 points to lead San Antonio.

With Manu Ginobili, Rudy Gay and Kawhi Leonard out with injuries, the Spurs opted to bring Tony Parker off the bench for just the 14th time in 1,165 career games.

Parker responded with 12 points and five assists, but LaMarcus Aldridge struggled without the veteran point guard, scoring a season-low 10 points.

                    MAGIC 103, CELTICS 95

BOSTON (AP) - Elfrid Payton had 22 points and Orlando won for just the third time in 20 games, overcoming Kyrie Irving's 40 points.

Orlando snapped a 14-game losing streak at Boston. The Magic had lost 10 in a row on the road overall since early December.

Irving sat out Boston's previous game to rest a sore left shoulder. Despite his efforts, the Celtics dropped their season-worst third straight home game.

Evan Fournier added 19 and Aaron Gordon had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Magic.

                    LAKERS 127, KNICKS 107

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Jordan Clarkson had 29 points and 10 assists, Julius Randle added 27 points and 12 rebounds, and Los Angeles got its sixth win in eight games.

Kyle Kuzma added 15 points for the Lakers (17-29), who continued their midseason surge of solid play. Rookie point guard Alex Caruso set career highs with nine points and eight assists, making the most of extensive playing time in the absence of injured Lonzo Ball.

Kristaps Porzingis, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Michael Beasley scored 17 points apiece for the Knicks, who have lost 12 of 16. New York slipped to 2-2 on its seven-game trip.

The Knicks couldn't keep up down the stretch with the Lakers, whose up-tempo offense flowed throughout their highest-scoring game in two weeks.

                    NETS 101, PISTONS 100

DETROIT (AP) - Spencer Dinwiddie's jumper with 0.9 seconds left lifted Brooklyn over Detroit, the Pistons' fifth straight loss.

After a basket by Andre Drummond put the Pistons ahead with 4.7 seconds left, Dinwiddie took the inbounds pass, drove to 14 feet and drained a jumper against his former teammates.

Caris LeVert split a pair of free throws with 13.7 seconds left, giving the Nets a 99-98 edge.

Langston Galloway misplayed the ensuing inbounds pass, but was able to knock the ball to Drummond. Detroit's center nearly traveled in a rare drive from outside the 3-point arc, and flipped in a go-ahead shot.

Dinwiddie finished with 22 points. Tobias Harris led the Pistons with 20.

                      **************************************

                      Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

                      13) Patriots 24, Jaguars 20— Tom Brady went to the same high school as Barry Bonds, Lynn Swann— Serra HS in San Mateo, CA; their booster club must have a boatload of money.

Despite all that, my favorite Serra HS alum is former big league infielder Tim Cullen, who won a World Series ring as a reserve infielder with the ’72 Oakland A’s.

Looking up Cullen’s career, which lasted seven years, in February, 1968 he was traded from the Senators to the White Sox, then in August that same year, he was traded back to Washington. In both trades, infielder Ron Hansen went the other way. No idea why.

                      12) Patriots’ WR Danny Amendola played the first four years of his career with the St Louis Rams; he missed 22 of 64 games in those years, when the Rams went a combined 17-46-1. Amendola was productive when he played, but he missed way too many games.

In five years since moving on to New England, Amendola has played in 69 of 80 games, for a team that went 63-17— are the Patriots’ trainers that much better than the Rams’ trainers?

                      11) Maybe this happens a lot and I’ve just never seen it, but when the Patriots’ game ended and Brady was shaking hands with a guy on Jacksonville, referee Clete Blakeman patted Brady on the back, got his attention, then said something quick to him before he left.

Since when do the referees congratulate players after they win?

                      10) In 266 NFL games this season, only 12 times has a team been called for zero or one penalty in a game— New England became the 12th team Sunday.

Last time an NFL team had only one penalty in a playoff game? The Patriots, back in 2011.

                      9) Two years ago, for whatever reason, ESPN went out of its way to promote LSU’s freshman star Ben Simmons, to the point where you almost rooted against Simmons, especially when LSU didn’t make the NCAA tournament. It became sickening that ESPN would promote a kid who had no resume— it was all hype.

This year, they’re doing the same thing with Oklahoma’s Trae Young, to the point where the kid has 28 turnovers in his last three games but you feel like ESPN thinks he is the best college ballplayer since Michael Jordan, or at least Simmons. Enough already; let the season play itself out. At least Oklahoma will be in the NCAA’s.

                      8) How many movies has Dwayne Johnson made? Seems like The Rock is working his butt off, making a ton of cash. According to IMDB.com, Mr Johnson has made 70 movies/TV shows, not counting all his WWE stuff and he is only 46 years old.

He has 10 projects that have either been completed or announced but not released yet. Have to give him credit, he is making a lot of money while the proverbial iron is hot.

                      7) When Nick Foles went to the Pro Bowl after the 2013 season, his OC with the Eagles was Pat Shurmur, who is Minnesota’s OC now and is expected to be named head coach of the Giants Tuesday. Foles could win the Super Bowl, then go back to being the Eagles’ backup next year.

                      6) What the hell do the Vikings do now? Bad enough they have to go home and have the Super Bowl played in their own ballpark, but their offseason will really be interesting.

Which of the three QB’s stays in Minnesota? Keenum? Bridgewater? Bradford? Do two of them stay and if so, which one takes a hike? Lot of hard questions need to be answered.

                      5) Clemson Tigers are 16-3 and appear headed to the NCAAs, but they lost 2nd-leading scorer Donte Grantham with a torn ACL Saturday— he is out for the year.

                      4) Man if you don’t like football, Sunday was a rough day for sports on TV; a few, but not many college hoop games- no real good ones, some golf, the Australian Open, but just a lackluster TV day, except for the conference championship games.

                      3) Eagles 38, Vikings 7—During the regular season, Vikings were only team not to allow a defensive TD against them- whoops. Patrick Robinson’s first quarter pick-6 changed all that, and turned the tide in a game that Minnesota led early, 7-0.

                      2) NFL trivia— Case Keenum could’ve become the second undrafted QB to start a Super Bowl, but the draft today is only seven rounds— John Unitas was a 9th round pick of the Steelers in 1955, though there were also a lot fewer teams then. Unitas was the 102nd player taken in the ’55 draft, which would put him in the 4th round these days.

Kurt Warner remains the only undrafted QB to start a Super Bowl.

                      1) Early line on the Super Bowl: Patriots, -5.5 or 6, bet down already from -7. Some experts are predicting it’ll get back to 7 or 7.5 in the next two weeks.

It is unusual that the Eagles just KO’d the Vikings and now head to Minnesota for the Super Bowl, where it is doubtful they’ll get a warm reception.

2018 handicapping note: Vikings return to Philadelphia in the 2018 regular season.

                        Monday's Tip Sheet
                        January 21, 2018

Game of the Night: Wolves at Clippers – 10:35 PM EST

Minnesota (30-18 SU, 23-23-2 ATS) has captured each of the first two meetings with Los Angeles this season as the teams meet for the third of four matchups. The Wolves have won each contest by six points apiece, as the first victory came at Target Center in early December, 112-106, but the Clippers covered as 12-point underdogs. Minnesota won the rematch three days later at Staples Center, 113-107, as the Wolves cashed barely as 5 ½-point favorites.

The Clippers (23-22 SU, 25-19-1 ATS) saw their six-game winning streak disappear on Saturday in a 125-113 defeat at Utah as two-point underdogs. L.A. allowed 76 first half points and Utah to shoot 55% from the floor. Lou Williams paced the Clippers with 31 points and 10 steals in the loss, as Los Angeles had its three-game road winning streak snapped.

The Wolves played without guard Jimmy Butler on Saturday night, but Minnesota rallied past Toronto as short home underdogs, 115-109 to snap a two-game skid. Minnesota knocked down 32-of-42 free throws in the win, while Andrew Wiggins led the Wolves with 29 points. Butler is listed as questionable on Monday with a knee injury, as Minnesota looks to end a four-game road losing streak.

                        First Things First

A pair of division leaders meet up in Houston as the Rockets (32-12 SU, 22-21-1 ATS) try to avoid a letdown as the Heat invade the Toyota Center. Houston knocked off Golden State for the second time this season on Saturday, 116-108 to cash as 2 ½-point home underdogs, as Chris Paul led the Rockets with 33 points and 11 rebounds. The Rockets improved to 5-1 SU/ATS the last six games following consecutive losses to the Pistons and Warriors earlier this month, while recording four consecutive UNDERS.

The Heat (27-19 SU, 21-23-2 ATS) conclude their five-game road swing after rallying past the Hornets on Saturday, 106-105 as seven-point underdogs. Miami continues to cash tickets in the away ‘dog role by going 7-2 ATS in the last nine opportunities, including victories over Toronto, Milwaukee, and Boston. The Heat swept the Rockets last season, as Miami won both games as a hefty underdog, while surprising Houston at the Toyota Center as 10-point ‘dogs last February.

                        Georgia ‘Dogs

The Hawks (13-32 SU, 24-19-2 ATS) are near the bottom of the Southeast division, but Atlanta has been a solid look in the role of a home underdog of late. Although the Hawks are coming off a 16-point defeat to the Bulls on Saturday (as a home favorite), Atlanta has won and covered five straight times when receiving points at Philips Arena. During this hot streak, the Hawks have knocked off the Pelicans, Blazers, Spurs, Mavericks, and Wizards.

The next test for Atlanta as a home ‘dog comes against Utah (19-27 SU, 23-23 ATS), who hasn’t won consecutive games since early December. The Jazz held off the Clippers on Saturday, 125-113, as Utah hit the OVER for third straight contest. Quin Snyder’s team has struggled away from Salt Lake City this season by compiling a 5-18 road mark, but the Jazz have won two of their past three away games.

                        American Dream

The “process” is working for the 76ers (22-20 SU, 24-17-1 ATS) of late by winning seven of their last eight games. Interestingly, the only defeat in this span came in London against the Celtics on January 11 as Philadelphia squandered a 22-point lead. So the last eight games played in the United States, the Sixers have been victorious, including a 116-94 blowout of the short-handed Bucks on Saturday. Philadelphia owns a 4-1 SU/ATS record in its past five road contests as the Sixers travel to Memphis.

The Grizzlies (16-29 SU, 19-24-2 ATS) have been a covering machine since December 27 by putting together a 9-2 ATS record in the previous 11 contests. The latest ATS win came in Saturday’s 111-104 defeat at New Orleans, but Memphis managed a cover as nine-point underdogs. Memphis has fared extremely well at FedEx Forum of late by winning five of the last six on their home floor, while covering five straight in this span.

                        Back on Track

Following a 1-4 ATS stretch, the Bulls (18-28 SU, 28-17-1 ATS) have covered five consecutive games, including a 113-97 blowout of the Hawks on Saturday as a short underdog. Since losing at Golden State by 49 points on November 24, Chicago has compiled a 10-2 ATS record in its past 12 games away from the United Center. The Bulls have won six of those road contests, but the last three have come against teams currently below .500 (Atlanta, Dallas, New York).

Chicago heads to the Big Easy to face New Orleans (24-21 SU, 23-21-1 ATS) as the Pelicans are heating up of late by going 4-1 in the last five games. Two wins in this stretch have come in overtime at Boston and New York, but the Pelicans have struggled to cover numbers as a home favorite recently by posting a 1-4 ATS mark in the last five opportunities. The Pelicans held off the Bulls in overtime at the United Center in their first meeting this season, 96-90 as 5 ½-point favorites.

                        Blazing Back

After its defense was torched in the final three losses of its recent road trip, Portland (25-21 SU, 21-21-4 ATS) swept a three-game homestand by beating Phoenix, Indiana, and Dallas. The Blazers extended their home winning streak to six with Saturday’s nine-point triumph over the Mavericks, as their last home defeat came to the Nuggets on December 22. Portland will look to avenge that defeat with a trip to Pepsi Center in Denver as the two Northwest rivals have split two meetings this season.

The Nuggets (23-23 SU, 20-24-2 ATS) have gone backwards of late by dropping consecutive games to the Clippers and Suns, while failing to cover in four straight contests. Denver is riding a six-game UNDER streak, while scoring 105 points or fewer in each of those contests. Each of the past four meetings between these teams at Pepsi Center have eclipsed the OVER, including both matchups last season.

                        Fast Break

-- The Kings look to halt a seven-game losing streak as they continue their road swing against the Hornets. Charlotte routed Sacramento at Golden 1 Center earlier this month, 131-111, while the Hornets are 5-0 SU/ATS the last five games off a loss following Saturday’s one-point setback to the Heat.

-- The Bucks seek their sixth straight win against the Suns dating back to 2015 as the teams meet in Milwaukee. The previous matchup in Phoenix went to overtime as the Bucks held off the Suns, 113-107 in November. Giannis Antetokonmpo will sit once again for the Bucks to rest his knee, as the Bucks try to improve on a 1-6 ATS record the last seven games.

-- Dallas shocked Washington as 10-point road underdogs in their last matchup in November, 113-97 at Capital One Arena. The two squads hook up in Dallas as the Mavericks attempt to halt a three-game skid. The Wizards rebounded from a horrible defensive effort at Charlotte to rally past Detroit on Friday, 122-112. Washington hasn’t been a reliable favorite by going 3-14 ATS the last 17 tries when laying points.
