BOSTON -- The Boston Celtics pulled off the biggest comeback of the NBA season Thursday night.

Down by 26 points early in the third quarter, Boston never led until Al Horford scored with 3.7 seconds left, escaping with a wild 99-98 victory that sent the Houston Rockets to their fourth straight loss.

Two straight offensive fouls in the backcourt resulting from James Harden knocking down Marcus Smart as Houston tried to inbound the ball with no timeouts left turned the game in the closing seconds.

Kyrie Irving paced the Celtics with 26 points. Harden led all scorers with 34 points but was only 7 of 27 from the floor.

          Spurs 119, Knicks 107

SAN ANTONIO -- LaMarcus Aldridge scored a game-high 25 points, and Pau Gasol added 17 points and 11 rebounds to rack up his fourth straight double-double as San Antonio rolled past New York.

Game of the Night: Bucks at Thunder – 8:05 PM EST

It took some time, but Oklahoma City (20-15 SU, 14-21 ATS) is finally putting things together by winning eight of its past nine games. The most recent victory came in Wednesday’s 124-107 home triumph over the Raptors as Paul George led OKC with 33 points, while Russell Westbrook posted a 30-point, 13-assist effort. The Thunder avoided a letdown following Monday’s home win over Houston, while improving to 8-1 in their last nine games at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

The Bucks (18-15 SU, 13-15-5 ATS) have struggled to find consistency all season long as their past 10 games heading into Thursday read like this: win three straight, lose three in a row, win consecutive games, lost back-to-back. The most recent skid included losses to Charlotte and Chicago, as the Bulls handled the Bucks for the second time in an 11-day span, 115-106 as 7 ½-point underdogs. Milwaukee’s 10-game OVER streak came to an end on Thursday as the Bucks rallied past the Wolves, 102-96 to cash as four-point favorites.

When these teams met earlier this season on Halloween night in Milwaukee, the Thunder crushed the Bucks, 110-91 as 2 ½-point favorites. Westbrook compiled a triple-double although he scored only 12 points, while OKC knocked down 12 three-pointers in the victory. The Thunder have captured five of the past six matchups with the Bucks since 2014, while winning four consecutive home meetings.

              Grounded Rockets

Houston (25-8 SU, 16-16-1 ATS) led the Celtics by 26 points on Thursday prior to a late meltdown in a 99-98 road defeat, while dropping their fourth consecutive game. The Rockets suffered their first road setback against an Eastern Conference opponent as Houston travels to Washington on the second end of a back-to-back. Houston has won in three of four opportunities with no rest, but has managed a 1-3 ATS record in this situation.

The Wizards (19-16 SU, 17-18 ATS) look to rebound following a surprising loss as six-point favorites at Atlanta on Wednesday, 113-99. Washington dropped to 0-4 ATS the last four games as a road favorite, but the Wizards are 10-3 ATS this season in the role of an underdog. Houston has won in its past four visits to Capital One Arena, all decided by eight points or less.

              Blah La Land

The Lakers (11-22 SU, 16-17 ATS) have gone through a cold spell recently by dropping their last four games and seven of their previous eight contests. Luke Walton’s team has lost six straight games at Staples Center, including a 109-99 setback to the struggling Grizzlies on Wednesday as 3 ½-point favorites. The Lakers are a beat-up squad right now, as Brook Lopez and Lonzo Ball are sidelined, while rookie standout Kyle Kuzma is dealing with a quad injury after shooting 4-of-24 from the field on Wednesday.

It’s the third chance for the Lakers to beat the Clippers this season as the two L.A. rivals meet up. The Clippers (14-19 SU, 17-15-1 ATS) have had their way with the Purple and Gold in two victories this season, while staving off the Lakers in late November by five points. Doc Rivers’ squad has played better lately by winning three of four games, while forward Blake Griffin hopes to return to the lineup on Friday after missing the last 14 contests with a sprained MCL.

              Southwest Streaks

The Mavericks and Pelicans are playing solid basketball as the calendar is nearing a turn to 2018. Dallas (11-25 SU, 17-18-1 ATS) is coming off a pair of consecutive underdog victories over Toronto and Indiana, as the Mavs picked up only their third road win over the season by downing the Pacers on Wednesday, 98-94. Rick Carlisle’s team has allowed less than 100 points in seven of the past 10 games, while cashing the UNDER seven times.

New Orleans (18-16 SU, 19-14-1 ATS) equaled its longest winning streak of the season on Wednesday by capturing its third straight victory in a 128-113 blowout of Brooklyn. Rajon Rondo dished out a career-high 25 assists for the Pelicans, who improved to 5-2 ATS in the last seven contests. New Orleans knocked off Dallas in the first matchup this season at the American Airlines Center, 99-94 as 4 ½-point favorites in early November, only one of two ATS losses in nine division games for the Mavs.

              Bulls’ Gold

Who would have thought that the hottest ATS team in the league was once 3-20? Chicago (12-22 SU, 20-13-1 ATS) has covered 11 of its past 12 games, while posting an impressive 9-3 mark in this span. Two of those three losses came at Boston and Cleveland, but the Bulls have taken care of their business at home by winning six straight games at the United Center. The start of this ATS streak came in a 98-96 defeat at Indiana as 10-point underdogs on December 6, as the Bulls squandered a 17-point advantage.

The Pacers (19-16 SU, 20-15 ATS) have slipped up of late by dropping low-scoring affairs to Detroit and Dallas. In Wednesday’s 98-94 defeat to Dallas, leading scorer Victor Oladipo sat out with a sore right knee as he is expected to be sidelined once again on Friday. Indiana seeks its third victory over Chicago this season, while posting a solid 6-3 record in its past nine games away from Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

              • NBA notebook: Clippers F Griffin may return Friday
                December 28, 2017

Five-time All Star forward Blake Griffin will be a game-time decision when the Los Angeles Clippers play the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center on Friday.

Griffin has missed the past 14 games because of a sprained left knee, which he sustained in a 120-115 victory against the Lakers on Nov. 27. He was originally expected to miss eight weeks, but has made rapid progress in his rehabilitation.

"I just know his work ethic has to have something to do with it," Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. "He gets a lot of heat for getting injured, but no one gives him credit for getting healthy. He works his butt off like no one I've ever seen."

Griffin practiced with the Clippers G League affiliate, the Agua Caliente Clippers of Ontario, on Wednesday and rejoined his Los Angeles teammates for another practice Thursday.

--Golden State Warriors star point guard Stephen Curry was ruled out for Friday's game against the Charlotte Hornets but he could return Saturday, according to coach Steve Kerr.

Curry, who is recovering from a sprained right ankle, will sit out for the 11th straight game on Friday. But he participated in parts of practice Thursday and took part in a 3-on-3 scrimmage afterward, prompting optimism he might be able to play Saturday against the Memphis Grizzlies.

"I don't think it would make much sense, but I think he's probably going to want to (play)," Kerr told reporters. "But it's more likely he plays Saturday. If all goes well, I expect him to play Saturday, but even if it goes well, I'm not expecting him to play (Friday)."

Curry last played on Dec. 4. The Warriors are 9-1 without his services.

--Houston Rockets guard Chris Paul has been ruled out for Thursday's game against the Boston Celtics, the team announced.

Paul is missing his third straight contest since sustaining a left adductor strain in the fourth quarter of a 122-116 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Dec. 20.

"He wants to (play). Trying to hold him back is hard," coach Mike D'Antoni told the Houston Chronicle. "We want to make sure he's 100 percent. I'm confident against the Lakers at home (on Monday) he'll be back. I'm hopeful for one of these two games, but I don't want to go there yet."

                A nine-time All-Star, Paul is averaging 17.1 points, 9.0 assists and 2.1 steals for the Rockets (25-7).

--Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Jeff Teague will be out two to four weeks with a sprained left knee, according to multiple reports.

An MRI exam detected the seriousness of the injury but also displayed there was no structural damage.

Teague injured the knee in the fourth quarter of Wednesday's overtime victory over the Denver Nuggets. The 29-year-old Teague is averaging 13.4 points and 7.2 assists this season in his first campaign with the Timberwolves.

                • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

                  — New Jersey Giants hired Dave Gettleman as their new GM.

                  — Celtics 99, Rockets 98— Houston led by 26 at one point, has now lost four in a row.

                  — Seton Hall 90, Creighton 84— High-level game in the Big East.

                  — Southern Illinois 56, Northern Iowa 53— Upset in Missouri Valley.

                  — TCU 39, Stanford 37– Alamo Bowl was an excellent game.

                  — Navy 49, Virginia 7— Spineless effort by Virginia, which ran opening kickoff back for TD, then was putrid the rest of the day.

                  **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I’m looking for on last weekend of 2017…….

                  13) Falcons need to beat Carolina to make the playoffs; if they lose, then Seattle needs to beat the Cardinals to get in. All the playoff-relative games start at 4:25 Sunday- should be fun.

                  12) Georgia-Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl? I’m guessing LA Rams/Dawg alums Todd Gurley, Alex Ogletree will make the short drive to Pasadena to root on their buddies.

                  11) Ravens need to beat Cincinnati to get in playoffs; no excuses. If Baltimore loses, then the Bills get in if they won in Miami.

                  10) Alabama/Clemson play in the playoff for the third year in a row; couple of sophomore QB’s will be in the spotlight. Dabo Swinney is an Alabama alum- he is the 5th Clemson head coach who went to Alabama, which is odd.

                  9) New Orleans clinches the NFC South by winning at Tampa Bay, which means a home game in the playoffs— Saints won their last seven home games.

                  8) USC-Ohio State should be the Rose Bowl; I’m not saying this should be a playoff game, just saying that the Rose Bowl should always be a Pac-12-Big 14 game. Trojans won their last seven games with Ohio State.

                  7) Chargers-Raiders in a 27,000-seat soccer stadium in Carson could actually mean a playoff berth for a Charger squad that started the season 0-4. Bolts would’ve made the playoffs if their kicker didn’t screw up in the first couple weeks- they wound up going thru five kickers this year.

                  6) Iowa State/Wisconsin both had really good seasons, but somehow both wound up playing true road games in bowls, the Cyclones in Memphis, the Badgers in Miami. Not sure how that happened, and it doesn’t seem all that fair, but it is what it is.

                  5) Read somewhere on the Interweb that Buffalo has a 13% chance of making the playoffs; they have to win obviously, but then the Ravens also have to lose, or the Titans/Chargers both have to lose. Bills haven’t made the playoffs since 1999.

                  4) Central Florida gets 9.5 points in their bowl game, and the Knights are unbeaten; they’re playing an Auburn team that beat Alabama, split a pair with Georgia, with the loss on this same field in the SEC title game

                  3) Tennessee lost its last three games, but they get in playoffs by beating Jacksonville team that figures to be looking ahead to its playoff game next week.

                  2) Saturday is the first full day Saturday for conference games in college basketball, so I’ll have all four of my eyes on those games Saturday.

                  1) Couple of QB’s get their first NFL starts Sunday, after backing up QB’s who won division titles; Sean Mannion with the Rams, rookie Patrick Mahomes with Kansas City.

                            • NBA roundup: Wizards hand Rockets fifth straight loss
                              December 30, 2017

WASHINGTON -- Otto Porter scored 26 points and Bradley Beal had 21 as the Washington Wizards handed the Houston Rockets their fifth consecutive loss with a 121-103 win on Friday night.

Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 10 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter for the Wizards (20-16), who turned a nine-point lead entering the fourth quarter into a rout. John Wall finished with 17 points.

James Harden led the Rockets (25-9) with 20 points. Chris Paul started and scored eight points in 25 minutes after sitting out the previous three games with a left adductor strain.

The Rockets, who average more 3-point attempts than any team, shot 5-for-25 from beyond the arc in the first half and finished 14 of 48.

Porter sank 7 of 11 shots from long distance and the Wizards shot 18 of 36 on 3-pointers. Washington finished at 53.4 percent from the field compared to Houston's 42.7 percent.

                              Hornets 111, Warriors 100

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Dwight Howard totaled a season-high 29 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists to propel Charlotte to a stunning victory against Golden State.

Howard posted his 20th double-double this season and shot 10-for-15 from the field. Kemba Walker added 16 points and Nicolas Batum contributed 15 for Charlotte (13-22).

Kevin Durant scored 27 points and Klay Thompson added 24 for Golden State (28-8). Draymond Green nearly recorded a triple-double with 11 rebounds, 16 assists and eight points for the Warriors, who lost to Charlotte for the first time in their last eight meetings.

                              Raptors 111, Hawks 98

TORONTO --DeMar DeRozan scored 25 points and added five assists as Toronto defeated Atlanta for its 11th consecutive home victory.

The Raptors are 13-1 at the Air Canada Centre for the season. The franchise record for consecutive home wins is 12 set Jan. 18-March 4, 2016.

Kyle Lowry added 12 points and five assists, Jonas Valanciunas scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Delon Wright contributed 13 points off the bench.

                              Bucks 97, Thunder 95

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Giannis Antetokounmpo's baseline layup with nine-tenths of a second left gave Milwaukee a controversial win over the Thunder.

Antetokounmpo appeared to step on the baseline as he made his move toward the basket, but the play was not reviewable, and the game ended as Russell Westbrook's desperation heave fell short. After the buzzer, Oklahoma City's Carmelo Anthony argued with officials at length, pointing to the video board, which showed the play, then zeroed in on Antetokounmpo's foot.

Antetokounmpo led the Bucks (19-15) with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Westbrook finished with 40 points and 14 rebounds.

Darren Collison scored 30 points for the Pacers (19-17), who lost their third straight game and again played without injured leading scorer Victor Oladipo (right knee soreness and swelling). Lance Stephenson, who started for Oladipo for the second straight game, finished with 18 points and nine rebounds.

                              Mavericks 128, Pelicans 120

NEW ORLEANS -- J.J. Barea made two 3-pointers down the stretch and Dallas made a franchise-record 22 3-pointers to defeat New Orleans.

The Mavericks (12-25) made 22 of 39 shots from long range to better their club record of 19 3-pointers, and they scored their most points in a game this season.

The Pelicans (18-17) got 33 points from Anthony Davis and 32 points and 20 rebounds from DeMarcus Cousins but could not stop the Mavericks' long-range barrage.

Josh Richardson scored 19 points for Miami, which lost to the Heat for the second time in the last 13 meetings.
