    • Preview: Sun (20-11) at Mystics (17-14)
      Date: August 29, 2017 7:30 PM EDT

The Connecticut Sun and Washington Mystics are headed to the playoffs. Now it's about doing so with momentum.

The teams meet Tuesday for the third and final time during the regular season at Capital One Arena in Washington.

The Sun (20-11) are 8-2 in their last 10 games despite falling 96-83 at home Friday to the Chicago Sky, who attacked weary Connecticut early and led by 22 points in the third quarter.

"Chicago has played once in the last eight days and this is our fifth game in 11 days," Sun coach Curt Miller told the Hartford Courant. "When we looked at this stretch, we thought it was going to be really, really difficult when the schedule came out. We almost got through it, but it caught up to us and we looked like the tired team."

Connecticut was 4 of 18 on 3-pointers in the loss. Alyssa Thomas had 14 points.

The Mystics (17-14) lost 83-78 at home Saturday to the Dallas Wings in their second game in as many nights despite getting 29 points and 11 rebounds from Elena Delle Donne and 22 points from Emma Meesseman.

"I thought we got some pretty wide-open looks," Mystics coach Mike Thibault said. "I thought, actually, a couple players passed up some open shots. I thought we got some point-blank looks and they didn't go in. Shots that, when they're shooting, I say that's a pretty good shot."

Washington has lost two in a row and four of five to fall 2 1/2 games behind fourth-place New York with three games remaining. The top four teams receive a bye into the second round of the playoffs.

"We really wanted this win, so we were prepared to play very competitive," Meesseman said. "We wanted to play, we didn't feel tired. I don't think that's going to be an excuse."

Delle Donne played in games on consecutive nights Friday and Saturday after missing nearly a month following thumb surgery.

"I'm all right. Obviously, all of our bodies are a little tired," the All-Star said. "I think both were great tests. Unfortunately, we came away with losses in those tests, but they are good games to be in right now, especially with playoffs right around the corner."

Tuesday's game is a makeup for the original July 28 matchup that was initially delayed and then postponed because of a leaky roof at Washington's home arena. Connecticut then heads west for games at Phoenix and Los Angeles.

"Our last three games are certainly not going to be easy," Miller said. "And when the game (vs. Washington) was cancelled (due to water leaking) and delayed until now, we knew it was going to be a tough way to end the season -- three road games against three talented teams. We have to steal a win or two to try and stay in the top four."

Washington plays host to Seattle on Friday, then concludes the regular season on Sunday at Minnesota.

The Mystics and Sun split two previous meetings.

          • WNBA playoff picture still muddled up
            August 29, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) The WNBA is headed into the final week of the regular season and there are a few playoff spots still up for grabs. Postseason seeding is also still undecided with several teams jockeying for position.

Los Angeles and Minnesota have clinched the top two seeds. The Sparks though only sit a half-game behind the Lynx for homecourt advantage throughout the postseason and have the tiebreaker. The Sparks also were a unanimous choice atop The Associated Press WNBA power poll on Tuesday.

New York and Connecticut have first-round byes, but also are a half-game apart from each other for the three and four seeds. The teams split their four games during the regular season and the Liberty most likely would have the second tiebreaker of record against .500 or better teams.

Washington, Phoenix, Dallas and Seattle round out the playoff field for now. The Storm and Wings still need a win or two to get in.

            ---

POWER POLL: Los Angeles solidified its spot at No. 1 with win over Minnesota on Sunday.

            1. Los Angeles (24-8): The Sparks have continued to improved their defense throughout the season and are looking good in quest to repeat as champions.

            2. Minnesota (24-7): Rebekkah Brunson returned from an ankle injury, but Lynx are still missing Lindsay Whalen. The point guard remains sidelined with broken bone in her hand.

            3. New York (20-12): Eight straight victories have pushed the Liberty to third in the power poll.

            4. Connecticut (20-11): The schedule isn't kind with road games in Washington, Phoenix and Los Angeles to close out season.

            5. Washington (17-14): The good news is Elena Delle Donne is back from a thumb injury. Bad news is the Mystics lost consecutive games with her on the court.

            6. Phoenix (16-16): A big win in Seattle may have clinched a first-round home game in the playoffs.

            7. Dallas (15-17): The Wings just need one more win or loss by Chicago to secure a postseason berth.

            8. Seattle (14-18): The initial boost from a coaching change seems to have worn off.

            9. Chicago (12-19): At least if the Sky don't make the playoffs they'll have two picks in the draft lottery.

            9. Atlanta (12-20): The team finally won a few games in August, but it's too little too late.

            11. San Antonio (7-23): The Stars continue to play teams tough even though it hasn't translated into many wins.

            12. Indiana (9-23): The Fever are in an unfamiliar role of trying to play spoiler.

            ---

GAME OF THE WEEK: Storm at Sky, Sunday. Seattle hopes to have already clinched a playoff spot by the time the game tips off.

            ---

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Tina Charles, Liberty. Charles averaged 18.3 points, eight rebounds and two steals to help the Liberty win all three of their games this week and continue their torrid play. Other players receiving votes include Los Angeles' Nneka Oguwmike and Alana Beard as well as Atlanta's Layshia Clarendon.

            ---

HELPERS: Seattle's Sue Bird is three assists away from passing Ticha Penicheiro for the most in WNBA history. Bird had a chance to set the mark at home against Phoenix, needing only six assists at that point, but she finished with three.

                  • Preview: Lynx (24-7) at Fever (9-23)
                    Date: August 30, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

The Minnesota Lynx will try to lock up a 25-win season for the sixth time in the past seven years when they visit the Indiana Fever on Wednesday night.

Minnesota (24-7) already has secured one of the top two playoff seeds in the WNBA along with the Los Angeles Sparks. The Lynx have three games remaining in the regular season.

Indiana (9-23) has been eliminated from playoff contention and will try to play the role of spoiler despite entering with a six-game losing streak. The Fever have already matched a 17-year-old franchise record for losses in a season.

The season series is even at one game apiece, although each team won in much different fashion. Indiana held on for an 84-82 win on Aug. 6 on its home court. Twelve days later, as the series shifted to Minnesota, the Lynx coasted to a 111-52 victory. That marked the most lopsided contest in league history.

However, not everything has looked quite as easy for the Lynx since that matchup. Minnesota lost veteran guard Lindsay Whalen to a broken hand in early August and is 4-5 without her on the court.

Center Sylvia Fowles leads Minnesota with 19.4 points per game and 10.4 rebounds per game. Guard Maya Moore is next in scoring with 16.9 points per contest. Guard-forward Seimone Augustus (10.9 points) and forward Rebekkah Brunson (10.6 points) also are averaging in double digits.

For the Fever, veteran forward Candice Dupree leads the way with 14.9 points per game. Guard Erica Wheeler is the top scorer in the backcourt with an average of 11.5 points per game.

Wheeler is one of the few remaining healthy ballhandlers who started the season with the Fever. The team has lost guards Shenise Johnson, Tiffany Mitchell and Briann January because of injuries and recently received an emergency hardship exception to sign rookie guard Jennie Sims.

Dupree said she and her Fever teammates hope to repeat the success of their first game against the Lynx.

"I think we matched their physicality," Dupree told the team's official website. "We were aggressive. We asserted ourselves on both ends of the floor."

Fowles said the Lynx's recent recommitment to defense has been encouraging.

"I think it's been a conscious effort from us all," Fowles told the team's official website. "I think we do a very good job when we go out there and we're all on the same page.

                    • Preview: Wings (15-17) at Sky (12-19)
                      Date: August 30, 2017 8:00 PM EDT

Playoff prospects for the Chicago Sky are slim but not completely extinguished as the end of the WNBA regular season looms.

The Dallas Wings, meanwhile, would clinch a playoff spot and eliminate the Sky with a win over Chicago on Wednesday at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill.

Dallas (15-17) currently sits in seventh place in the WNBA, and the top eight teams making the postseason.

The Sky (12-19) lost 92-62 to the New York Liberty on Sunday, leaving Chicago 2 1/2 games out of the final playoff position with three regular-season games to play.

The Sky would also have to win their final two games and hope either the Wings or the Seattle Storm (14-18) falter to sneak into the postseason.

"All season we have kind of been this up-and-down (club), and we've responded really well," Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot said. "Two games ago, we got our butts kicked by 40, and then we come out and beat the third best-team (Connecticut). That's what we're focusing on now is bouncing back."

The New York loss was Chicago's third its past four games. Stefanie Dolson scored a team-high 22 points, more than a third of the Sky's production.

Dolson is 21st in league scoring with a 14.4-point average. Chicago guard Allie Quigley has a 16.3 point average, good for 12th among WNBA leaders.

The Sky and Wings have split two previous games played over four days in July. Chicago claimed a 90-84 decision on July 12 at Allstate Arena while Dallas prevailed 112-106 in double overtime on July 16 in Arlington, Texas.

The Wings moved into a position to clinch thanks to an 83-78 victory over Washington on Saturday. Skylar Diggins-Smith scored 20 points, and she fed Theresa Plaisance for a clinching 3-pointer with 17.2 seconds left.

"Now that we're in that position that we can make that push and it looks like that's the way we're going to go, I'm really excited," Wings forward Glory Johnson said this month. "I'm glad to be a part of it."

Dallas has five players averaging in double figures: Diggins-Smith (18.3), Johnson (14.5), Alisha Gray (13.2), Karima Christmas-Kelly (10.8) and Ariel Powers (10.7).

Chicago's road ahead includes a Friday game at Minnesota, the WNBA's best team. The Sky then close the regular season on Sunday at Seattle.

Dallas hosts the New York Liberty on Sunday to close the regular season.

It's the first playoff appearance for the franchise since moving to Dallas in 2016.

Chicago's Courtney Vandersloot missed a scoop shot in the lane with 1:05 left in the game and the Sky didn't get the ball back until 7.1 seconds left.

Dallas grabbed three offensive rebounds on its possession, with Karima Christmas-Kelly getting fouled on the Wings' 20th offensive board of the game. She made two free throws for a three-point lead and Chicago's Allie Quigley missed a 3 at the buzzer.

Johnson also grabbed nine rebounds as Dallas (16-17) outrebounded Chicago 40-28. The Wings are a half-game behind sixth-place Phoenix.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Maya Moore scored 18 points, Sylvia Fowles had 12 points and 13 rebounds for her 19th double-double, and the Lynx beat the Fever.

Minnesota (25-7) won its 25th game for the sixth time in seven years and moved a game in front of Los Angeles for the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.

Seimone Augustus added 14 points for Minnesota, which beat Indiana by a WNBA record 59 points when the two teams met on Aug. 18.

Moore's layup late in the second quarter capped Minnesota's 10-0 run for a 40-32 lead. Moore, Fowles and Augustus combined for 30 of the Lynx's 42 first-half points.

Fowles blocked a shot and her outlet pass led to Natasha Howard's layup, capping an 11-0 run to extend Minnesota's lead to 74-61. It came during the Lynx's 19-5 run to open the fourth quarter.

                              • Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

                                — Jose Reyes played LF Tuesday, first time in 1,739 MLB games he started in the outfield.

                                — Giancarlo Stanton hit his 18th HR in August, 51st this season.

                                — Miami Marlins have three different translators who travel with the team.

                                — Whit Merrifield homered in the 3rd inning last nite, ending the Royals’ scoring drought at 45 innings.

                                — Arizona 7, Dodgers 6: LA is 4-5 in its last nine games, not that it matters.

                                — Tweet of the Day:
“Pro tip: don’t take your kids phone away for punishment.
Take away their charger so they die a slow, painful death.”

                                **********

                                Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                                13) Matthew Stafford is the highest paid player in NFL history? A 5-year contract extension worth $135M??? Wow.

If he is that valuable, how in the name of Wayne Fontes is their left tackle Greg Robinson? Stafford is going to get pummeled this season with Robinson playing LT.

This note from Paul Howard: Stafford is 4-43 in his career against teams that finished the season with a winning record- 1-21 on the road.

                                12) Rangers wanted the Astros to play their series in Arlington this week, but they didn’t want to flip-flop home series, giving Houston three home games later on this season, which is why the series is being played in Florida. I’m guessing there is now some tension between front offices, if there wasn’t before.

                                11) Dale Sveum is the Royals’ batting coach; Brian Buchanan is his assistant. Has to be a very long week for them, with Kansas City not scoring a run for 45 consecutive innings.

1992 Cubs are the last team to get blanked four games in a row; no team with a DH had ever been shut out in four straight games.

                                10) If you see Chad Whitson umping home plate, know that you have a hitter’s umpire that night. Every game he works may not go over, but he squeezes pitchers, for sure.

Jordan Baker is also a hitters’ umpire, but his strike zone usually widens some as the game goes on. Whitson squeezes pitchers for all nine innings.

                                9) Politics intruded into the CFL this week; the league stepped in and basically vetoed former Baylor coach Art Briles being hired as an assistant coach by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Briles’ players at Baylor got into a lot of off-field trouble and it cost him his job. Briles himself did not commit a crime, but he is being treated as if he did.

                                8) TV evangelist Joel Osteen has a church in Houston that seats 16,000 people? Damn, thats a big church; must take forever to pass the collection baskets there.

                                7) A guy went to Hooters’ Casino in Las Vegas, bet $1.21M on Floyd Mayweather, and netted himself $242,000. Hooters is an unlikely sportsbook for such a large bet to be made.

                                6) Weird moment Sunday; Phillies pitcher Nick Pivetta tossed a pickoff throw to first base, but the runner (Anthony Rizzo) was still standing on first base. Never saw that before; he looked at Pivetta like, “What are you doing?”

                                5) Last four years, the four AFC South teams are a combined 15-28-1 vs spread as a home underdog in non-divisional games.

Last two years, the four AFC West teams are 13-3-1 vs spread when they’re road favorites in non-divisional games.

                                4) Denver’s backup QB Paxton Lynch has an injured throwing shoulder and will miss some games; will the Broncos sign Colin Kaepernick?

As of right now, Denver has starter Trevor Siemian, who is backed up by Kyle Sloter, who played WR, then QB at Southern Miss, then at Northern Colorado. They also have Chad Kelly as a developmental QB, but he is still hurt from his college days and won’t play this year. Denver has to sign another QB for their opener, you would think.

                                3) Tickets for the Texans-Cowboys exhibition game in Dallas Thursday are $25. Proceeds will go to the United Way’s relief fund. Excellent idea.

                                2) Scooter Gennett and Babe Ruth are only two major leaguers ever who hit their 20th homer of the season and also pitched on that same day.

                                1) RIP Jud Heathcote 90, the former Michigan State coach passed away Monday. Spartans have had only two basketball coaches the last 42 years, Heathcote and Tom Izzo.

Heathcote’s 1979 Michigan State team, led by Magic Johnson/Greg Kelser, won a national title, sparking the increased popularity of college basketball, thanks to Magic’s rivalry with Larry Bird.
