  • Saturday’s six-pack

    — Last five years, NFL underdogs coming off their bye week are 38-32 vs the spread.

    — Last five years, NFL favorites of 7+ points coming off a bye are 9-8-2 vs spread.

    — Drew Pomeranz left Friday night’s start with back spasms. Max Scherzer was scratched from his start at San Diego with another neck issue.

    — Mets traded Curtis Granderson to the Dodgers after Friday’s loss.

    — Angels’ rain delay in Baltimore last night was their first of the season.

    — DL happenings:
Cardinals put Adam Wainwright (elbow) on the DL
Cubs put Jon Lester (shoulder) and Justin Grimm (finger) on the DL
Twins put OF Robbie Grossman (thumb) on the DL
Nationals put Max Scherzer (neck) on the DL

    Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……..

    13) Rashard Davis returned punts for the Eagles Thursday night; the free agent from James Madison was signed earlier this week.

Last Saturday, while the chaos in Charlottesville was going on, Davis was working as a waiter in a restaurant in Charlottesville near the park where the mayhem with the statue of Robert E Lee occurred. He was hiding from his boss in the restaurant as he took calls from his agent updating him on the Eagles’ deal.

One day you’re a waiter, the next day you’re playing ball on national TV. Pretty cool.

    12) Something to think about when college football kicks off next weekend; only one of the last 19 national champs lost a non-conference game, Ohio State in 2014 (to Virginia Tech).

    11) There were 345 replay reviews in the NFL last year, the fewest since 2009, and 70 less than in 2015.

    10) 130 free agents changed teams in the NFL this offseason, also the fewest since 2009.

    9) Bill Belichick’s coaching record: 263-125
    Tom Brady won-loss record: 208-61
    Belichick’s record without Brady: 55-64

    8) Baltimore Ravens play in London in Week 3, but they don’t have the usual bye the next week- they host their rival, the Steelers. Ravens don’t have their bye until Week 10.

    7) Penn State gave coach James Franklin a 6-year contract extension, worth $34.3M. Franklin is 25-15 at PSU, 14-11 in league games, 1-2 in bowl games; Nittany Lions were 11-3 last year.

    6) Jacksonville kicker Jason Myers struggled in Thursday night’s loss to Tampa Bay, now they’re bringing in Dan Carpenter to compete with Myers. Maybe it is contagious; Jacksonville lost to the Buccaneers Thursday, who just fired their kicker last weekend.

    5) Le’Veon Bell’s agent had an agreement with the Steelers on a contract back in mid-July, but Bell nixed the deal at the last minute. Not sure if that was a great move by him.

    4) Arizona football coach Rich Rodriguez is being sued by his old agents for $230,250; he fired them a couple of years ago, but they say he didn’t pay them enough. Rodriguez agreed to pay them 10% of the money he made from CBS Sports Network, 4% of his money from Arizona.

Rodriguez is a good dude; I have no idea about this lawsuit, but when he left CBS to coach at Arizona, the crew at CBS left his chair empty for their first show without him, thats how much they thought of him.

    3) During the Blue Jays-Cubs game Friday, the Cubs’ roving reporter interviewed hockey star Patrick Sharp, who was sitting in the stands. Sharp grew up rooting for the Jays, but he tried to be political saying which team he was rooting for.

    2) Not the best week to be a statue, eh? Except for the home run sculpture in Miami, which Dade County says can’t be taken out of Marlins Park.

    1) Some good news for Marlins’ fans; David Samson is out as team president. This is a guy who was president of a baseball team who went on Survivor during baseball season— he was the first person voted out on Survivor.

At one point, he was Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria’s stepson. Now the Marlins are rid of Loria and Samson, and they’re much better off.

              • Sunday’s six-pack

                — Cardinals-Pirates ESPN game tonite is from Williamsport- they’ve got a NY-Penn League team there. Little League WS is going on now in Williamsport.

                — Dodgers are now 52-9 in their last 61 games- they lead the NL West by 20 games, and the 2nd/3rd place teams are the two NL Wild Card teams.

                — Going into Sunday, Angels/Twins are tied for the 2nd Wild Card in the AL.

                — There were five penalties on the same play in the Broncos-49ers game; four on Denver, one on the 49ers. Somehow, all five penalties offset.

                — Blue Jays acquired P Tom Koehler from Miami for a minor leaguer.

                — DL moves:
Washington puts P Max Scherzer (neck) back on the DL
Dodgers put P Yu Darvish on the DL.

Sunday’s List of 13: Random stuff for a summer Sunday……..

                13) Lot of major league umpires wore white wristbands Saturday to protest Ian Kinsler not being suspended after he verbally thrashed umpire Angel Hernandez earlier this week.

Earlier this month, umpire Joe West was suspended for three days, simply for saying that Adrian Beltre complained more than any other player.

The statement from MLB is clear; players matter more than umpires.

                12) Mets’ game Friday night ended around midnight; Curtis Granderson was traded right after the game, and was in Detroit Saturday afternoon, batting 5th for the Dodgers in a game that started at 4:00. Joc Pederson was sent to AAA to make room for Granderson.

                11) Is great to hear 82-year old Dick Enberg calling the Dodgers-Tigers games this weekend. One of the all-time great broadcasters, Mr Enberg called Padre games up until last season. To me, he is best-known for doing college basketball on NBC in the late 70’s/80’s.

                10) Umpire Adam Hamari is from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan; he had the plate in Detroit Saturday, and had lot of family at the game. Do friends/relatives of umpires cheer loudly for good calls? Do they take grief if a call goes against the home team?

                9) Giancarlo Stanton is the 4th big leaguer to hit 23 homers in a 35-game span; the other three were Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa.

                8) Brooklyn Nets will play regular season games against the Thunder and Heat in Mexico City in December.

                7) Detroit’s Justin Upton hit a homer Friday night; when he was between 2nd and 3rd base, he suddenly backtracked and went back to touch first base again, just to make sure he got it. Never saw that before If you miss first base, you dion’t even get credit for a hit, much less a homer, run scored and an RBI.

                6) Tight end Nick O’Leary caught three passes for 50 yards for Buffalo Thursday night; the Florida State alum is the grandson of golfing great Jack Nicklaus.

                5) Not only did Joc Pederson get sent to AAA, but San Diego sent RF Hunter Renfroe down to AAA El Paso— he was in an 8-for-64 skid at the time of his demotion.

                4) 53-year old Davis Love III is three shots out of the lead after three rounds of the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina. Love’s son is also in the Wyndham field; the last time a golfer won a PGA Tour event when his son was in the field? Craig Stadler, at the 2003 BC Open.

                3) Seattle Seahawks lost starting LT George Fant for the year with an ACL injury; Fant was a basketball player at Western Kentucky but had improved enough to become an NFL starter.

                2) Dodgers are now 52-9 in their last 61 games— this is a historic run, which won’t mean a thing once the playoffs start. Clayton Kershaw better get healthy.

                1) Former Boston Bruins’ coach/TSN hockey announcer Don Cherry sang Take Me Out to the Ballgame at Wrigley Field Saturday, dressed in a suit jacket, with, um……cherries on it. Cherry was a really good coach who is a complete character as a TV analyst.

                  • Preview: Lynx (22-5) at Liberty (16-12)
                    Date: August 20, 2017 3:00 PM EDT

New York seems to have finally found its groove.

After a little bit of a hiccup, Minnesota seems to have righted the ship.

And now the WNBA has a juicy Sunday matchup when the Lynx invade Madison Square Garden to take on the suddenly invincible Liberty, who have won four straight.

The Lynx won the first two meetings between the two this season.

Minnesota won at the Garden in a blowout on May 18 when all five starters scored in double figures.

On July 25, the Lynx held on for a 76-75 win in St. Paul, Minn. Maya Moore dropped in 27 points, but it was Lindsey Whalen who hit the game-winning shot.

The Liberty won't have to deal with 14-year veteran Whalen this time around. She'll be out for at least another two weeks after having surgery to repair a broken bone in her left hand two weeks ago.

Renee Montgomery replaced the Lynx floor general, and understands how important Whalen is to the team's success.

"I ask her every day, 'Man, is your hand healed yet? You ready to come back?'" Montgomery told the Minneapolis Star Tribune with a laugh, as she prepared last Monday for a second week as the interim starter. "We're a different team (without her)."

The Lynx struggled in Whalen's absence, winning once in four games. But Friday against Indiana, the Lynx put on a show that might never be repeated in a pro basketball game.

Minnesota (22-5) scored 37 straight points on its way to a 59-point victory. At one point, the Fever went scoreless for 11 minutes. The margin of victory was the highest in league history.

After scoring 61 points on Wednesday in a loss to the Seattle Storm, the Lynx lit up the scoreboard for 68 first-half points. And after suffering consecutive losses for the first time this season, Minnesota was ready to respond to its first taste of adversity this season.

"Our coaching staff challenged us, and we challenged ourselves as leaders," Moore told reporters. "This was truly a team win. It's something that will remind us of what we can be when we're all together and locked in."

The Liberty is coming off an impressive win as well after taking down the Connecticut Sun, the top team in the Eastern Conference.

After some midseason tinkering with his lineup, coach Bill Laimbeer is seeing the fruitions of hard work. The Liberty (16-12) have won four in a row and still have a shot at overtaking the Sun for the top spot in the East.

With six games remaining in the regular season, New York (along with Washington) is just two games behind Connecticut.

Before the Liberty and Lynx last met, one team -- Minnesota -- was trending upward while New York was scuffling.

Liberty star Tina Charles wasn't too worried, saying that time was on New York's side.

"We know we're a good team," Charles said. "At times, it's just we still have to figure it out.

"A lot of teams are able to figure it out at the beginning of the season, they have experience like in Minnesota and L.A., and then you have teams that are still figuring it out along the way and that's where we are."

Well, it looks like the Liberty figured things out and the Sun might be hearing footsteps after dropping an 82-70 decision on Friday to New York. The Sun had won 12 of 14 games until Charles poured in 24 points to end Connecticut's eight-game home winning streak.

Charles, the former University of Connecticut star, registered 18 first-half points as the two teams matched bucket-for-bucket. Not bad considering she almost didn't play.

"Tina Charles, we didn't think she was going to play tonight," New York coach Bill Laimbeer told the Hartford Courant. "She had a little bit of back spasms, and as of (Thursday), she was not going to play.

"(Friday) she said, 'I don't think so,' and then she said 'OK' and she played a phenomenal basketball game."

New York held the Sun to 34.3 percent field-goal shooting. The Liberty will need that kind of performance on Sunday against the Lynx. Against Indiana, Minnesota shot 59.2 percent from the field.

                    • Preview: Mercury (15-13) at Sun (18-10)
                      Date: August 20, 2017 3:00 PM EDT

It was just two weeks ago that the Connecticut Sun edged the visiting Phoenix Mercury despite 33 points by returning hometown hero Diana Taurasi.

Center Brittney Griner didn't play for the Mercury in that game.

She is back now, having played two games since returning from injury and has combined with Taurasi to lead the Mercury into the Mohegan Sun Arena for a quick rematch Sunday in Uncasville, Conn.

Griner, who missed eight games with knee and ankle injuries, returned with 19 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots in 21 minutes in a home loss to the Seattle Storm. Then, she had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Taurasi scored 14 of her 25 points in the fourth quarter as the Mercury opened a three-game road trip with a win at Washington.

Taurasi, who had the big night against the Sun in her recent visit, registered her 200th 20-point game at Washington as the Mercury (15-13) moved closer to clinching a playoff spot. Currently sixth in the overall standings, their magic number to clinch dropped to three with the win in Washington.

The Sun (18-10), who have already clinched their first playoff berth since 2012, had a pair of winning streaks snapped in Friday night's home loss to the surging New York Liberty. That ended Connecticut's six-game overall winning streak and its run of eight wins in a row in Uncasville.

"We're disappointed, but that game is so good for us," said Sun coach Curt Miller. "I can't begin to tell you how good that game is going to be for us in the long run. Tonight's game took on a playoff feel and the physicality that we knew was going to be in this game and the intensity from each and every possession was the best simulation we could possibly have for a playoff game.

"For our young team to understand the grind that the playoffs are going to be and not the 100-point games that you sometimes get during the regular season, tonight's game is going to go a long, long way for us."

Six Sun players reached double figures in the Aug. 4 win over the Mercury.

The teams meet again, in Arizona on Sept. 1, as the Sun close out the regular season with a trip to Phoenix and Los Angeles.

Jonquel Jones, the league's leading rebounder (11.6), who will be matched up with Griner in the paint Sunday, saw her run of double-doubles end at seven Friday. Foul trouble limited the reigning Eastern Conference player of the week to 11 points and nine rebounds in 23-plus minutes. Jasmine Thomas cleared the 2,000-point mark in the loss.

The Sun, leading the league in scoring, went just 4 of 21 from 3-point range and 18 of 28 from the foul line in losing for a second straight time to the Liberty.

Griner, who leads the league in scoring (21.7) and is eighth in rebounding (8.2), had her sixth double-double of the season at Washington.

                      • Preview: Mystics (16-12) at Fever (9-20)
                        Date: August 20, 2017 5:00 PM EDT

The Washington Mystics will try to complete a four-game season sweep over the Indiana Fever when the teams meet for the final time of the regular season Sunday evening in Indianapolis.

Washington (16-12) has won its first three matchups with the Fever by a combined total of 52 points, or an average of 17.3 points per game.

The Mystics are in contention to make the playoffs for the fourth time in the past five seasons and cannot afford to stumble down the stretch.

However, the Mystics have encountered adversity in recent weeks. Star forward Elena Delle Donne has been out since July 30 because of surgery to repair a torn ligament in her left thumb, and guard Tayler Hill is out for the rest of the season because of a torn ACL in her right knee.

Washington has lost back-to-back games and will try to avoid its second three-game losing streak of the year. The Mystics are coming off a 95-62 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday.

"We have to stay positive, we have to stay together," Washington guard Ivory Latta said to the team's official website. "That's the main thing. Going through these ups and downs, we've got to stay together as a team. We've got to go out there and continue to fight hard for each other.

"It's going to work out for us. We may not see it right now, but we've got to go to Indiana and play a really good team. ... We've just got to bring that energy and bring that passion."

Indiana (9-20) will look to play the role of spoiler now that its postseason hopes are erased. If a bright spot exists for the Fever, it is that they have fared decently well at home with a 6-7 record.

The Fever are coming off a record-setting loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Friday night. The big, physical Lynx crushed the Fever for a 59-point win -- the largest margin of victory in WNBA history.

"(The Lynx) were able to do anything they wanted after about 90 seconds," Fever coach Pokey Chatman said on the team's official website. "They were hungry. They pounded the ball down low ... and they asserted their will."

The remainder of the regular season will not get any easier for Indiana, which will be without guard Tiffany Mitchell because of torn cartilage and a bone bruise in her right knee. Mitchell ranked fourth on the team, averaging 10.3 points in 27 games (nine starts) this season.

Indiana has lost three games in a row and eight of the past nine.

                        • Preview: Storm (13-16) at Sky (11-17)
                          Date: August 20, 2017 6:00 PM EDT

The Chicago Sky had little time to rest after an exhausting double-overtime loss Friday to the reigning WNBA champion the Los Angeles Sparks.

They'll jump right back into action late Sunday afternoon as they host the Seattle Storm at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., in a must-win situation involving the league's eight- and nine-place teams.

Friday's 115-106 setback left the Sky (11-17) in ninth place -- 1 1/2 games behind Seattle for the final playoff spot.

"We just can't take any steps backward now," Chicago guard Allie Quigley said. "There's not enough time left in the season, so we have to take this as a positive and keep moving forward. If we keep playing like that for the rest of the season, then we'll go 6-0."

Chicago rallied from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to force overtime. Los Angeles opened the second overtime with a 7-0 run and never looked back.

Quigley continues to lead the Sky in scoring with a 17.3 point average, Courtney Vandersloot is tops in assists (eight per game) while Jessica Breland is leading rebounder with a 6.4 average.

Seattle (13-16) is one-half game behind seventh-place Dallas. The Storm have won three straight -- including Wednesday's 62-61 victory over league-leading Minnesota -- since a four-game losing streak.

On Friday, Seattle rallied from an 11-point deficit to top San Antonio 79-78, forcing 17 turnovers that resulted in 21 points.

"(Interim coach Gary Kloppenburg) is known for his defense, and we've been doing a lot of different things on the defensive end to try to get us going," Storm guard Sue Bird told reporters. "It's not always going to work, but if you stay with it, eventually you'll get some steals, which turned into some easy baskets.'

Bird has 2,580 career assists and needs 20 more to become the WNBA's all-time leader.

Seattle is 3-0 since Kloppenburg was named interim coach on Aug. 10 after the Storm fired Jenny Boucek, a 14-year WNBA coaching veteran.

Forward Breanna Stewart tops Seattle in scoring (20.2 points) and rebounding (8.6) while Bird leads in assists at 6.5.

Seattle hosts Atlanta on Wednesday while Chicago is back in action on Friday at Connecticut.

The Liberty (17-12) have won five straight, beating the WNBA's top three teams in the past three.

Maya Moore scored 22 points to lead the Lynx (22-6), who were missing starters Lindsay Whalen and Rebekkah Brunson to injuries.

The Lynx and Liberty players locked arms in a giant circle with members of the NYPD and Covenant House at center court before the game in a show of unity during the national anthem. The contest was billed as unity game to help promote social awareness toward racial inequalities. The Liberty hosted an hour long panel before the game with the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality.
