    • Preview: Storm (6-6) at Mystics (8-5)
      Date: June 27, 2017 12:00 PM EDT

The Washington Mystics prevented a small skid from escalating with a stout defensive performance in their last game. Based on their previous meeting against Seattle, they will need a similar effort to weather the Storm on Tuesday afternoon.

The Mystics (8-5) ended a two-game slide with a dominant 97-63 road win over the Chicago Sky on Sunday. Chicago committed 21 turnovers and shot 38 percent from the field against Washington.

"It's also about our defense," Mystics leading scorer Elena Delle Donne said after the win. "When we're playing great defense, we get out into transition and we can really find the right people and find the open spot. That was what was most helpful was once we turn up the defense we look really good, offensively too."

The offense looked good and balanced at Chicago. Tayler Hill paced five double-figure scorers with 17 points. Kristi Toliver scored all of her 16 points in the first half as Washington outscored Chicago 31-7 in the second quarter. Delle Donne finished with 11.

"When somebody like Kristi has a good start to a game and Tayler Hill finally got going and Elena gets going, then you add somebody else, then it gets hard to guard when three, four, five players get going," Mystics coach Mike Thibault said.

Washington's defense didn't get going enough during an 81-71 loss at Seattle on May 21. The Storm shot 49.2 percent from the field and controlled the third quarter 25-13. Jewell Loyd led all scorers with 26 points.

Seattle could use a similar performance after losing four of five, including Friday's 85-82 setback against Phoenix. The Storm trailed 49-42 at halftime.

"We're trying to figure out where that urgency is to start games," Seattle coach Jenny Boucek told the team's website. "We're definitely evaluating our slow starts and just how teams are coming at us early in games and putting us on our back foot early."

With Loyd, Brianna Stewart and Crystal Langhorne, the Storm have one of the top offenses in the league, ranking third in field goal percentage. However, Seattle is averaging 15 turnovers per game, a scenario that limits shot attempts.

Delle Donne, fifth in the WNBA at 19.3 points per game, had only 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting at Seattle. Washington shot 34.9 percent from the floor overall.

"We had a plan going in," Storm point guard Sue Bird after the first meeting. "In the first half in particular, they were able to dictate offensively. They were getting the shots they wanted when they wanted them.

"During halftime, we talked about being more aggressive and trying to dictate them more. What you saw was our strength, which was getting out in transition. Once we got some stops and were able to push it, the momentum switched for us.

      • Preview: Sparks (9-3) at Sun (6-6)
        Date: June 27, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Sparks look for their sixth straight win when they invade Mohegan Sun Arena for Tuesday night's game against the Connecticut Sun.

The Sparks, the defending WNBA champions led by Nneka Ogwumike and Candace Parker, are coming off an 84-73 win at Indiana, where they spoiled the Tamika Catchings number retirement ceremony -- and now visit a team that is also hot.

LA comes in 9-3 and two games out of first place behind the Minnesota Lynx (11-1). The Sun (6-6) had their five-game winning streak snapped Sunday at Dallas.

Ogwunike, who is averaging 20.3 points per game, scored 21 and Parker had 18 points, a season-high 13 rebounds, seven assists, three steals and two blocked shot for the Sparks at Indiana.

LA used a 19-0 third-quarter run out of the break to take control of that game with a 25-point lead.

Ogwunike starts the week as the fourth-leading scorer in the WNBA. Connecticut's Jonquel Jones still leads the league in rebounding with 11.7 boards per game.

Point guard Chelsea Gray also has been a key contributor for the Sparks this season and a candidate for most improved player. She is averaging 15.9 points and 4.3 assists in nearly 32 minutes per game.

"She is starting to become one of our playmakers down the stretch," Sparks coach Brian Agler said. "She has the ability to make good basketball plays with the ball in her hands. She was starting to do this a year ago during the regular season at the end, and it carried over to the postseason."

The Sun ran into a hot Dallas team on the road Sunday, trailing by as many as 17 points late as their winning streak ended with a 96-82 loss.

Alyssa Thomas finished with 19 points and Jones picked up her sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Thomas was named Eastern Conference player of the week on Monday.

"We're playing really well together right now," Thomas told Sun.com. "We're having fun and happy for each other. You can see it on the court, and we're looking a lot better."

Thomas is having an All-Star-type season, averaging career highs in points (13.6), assists (4.6), minutes (30.6), field goal percentage (50) and steals (1.36). She and Parker are the only two forwards in the league in the top 10 in assists.

"I don't want to be a one-dimensional player," she said. "I like to try to do more for the team on both ends. That's assists, rebounds, steals -- whatever it is.

"We have so many offensive weapons out there now; I just try to create and (my teammates) do the rest. I can't take too much credit; they are the ones hitting the shots."

While the Tuesday game starts a busy week for the Sun -- home Thursday and away Saturday -- the Sparks are playing their second game of a three-game road trip.

The teams meet two more times this season -- both in Los Angeles - on July 13 and Sept. 3.

          • Mystics ease by Storm, 100-70
            June 27, 2017

WASHINGTON (AP) Elena Delle Donne scored 25 points, Kristi Toliver made three of Washington's 10 3-pointers, and the Mystics beat the Seattle Storm 100-70 on Tuesday.

Delle Donne was 7 of 10 from the field and hit nine straight free throws as Washington was 26 of 29 at the line.

Washington made five 3-pointers in the first quarter and closed on a 9-0 run for a 29-12 lead. Seattle started the game making just 3 of 14 shots and the Mystics extended their lead to 56-31 at halftime.

Toliver finished with 14 points for Washington (9-5). Tayler Hill added 14, Tierra Ruffin-Pratt had 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Ivory Latta was ejected in the third quarter for two technical fouls following an offensive foul.

Crystal Langhorne scored 15 points for Seattle (6-7) and Breanna Stewart added 11. Seattle made four of 21 3-pointers and had 23 turnovers.

Ogwumike helps Sparks win sixth straight, beat Sun 87-79
            June 27, 2017

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) The Los Angeles Sparks have been playing a lot better over the last few weeks and their defense has been a big reason why.

Nneka Ogwumike scored 17 of her 21 points in the first half to help the Sparks beat the Connecticut Sun 87-79 on Tuesday night.

''We're getting better defensively,'' Los Angeles coach Brian Agler said. ''At the start of the season we were one of the bottom two teams. I'm not sure where we are now, but we're better than that.''

Candace Parker added 14 points, seven rebounds and five blocks for the Sparks (10-3), who have won six straight.

''There are some things we got to tidy up, putting teams away,'' Parker said. ''That's been our Achilles' heel this year. To beat a good Connecticut team on the road is huge.''

Parker didn't want to compare the success that the Sparks had last season, winning the title to what they've done this year. She'd rather focus on just getting better every game.

''It's completely different years. Last year was historical. It's hard to match that,'' she said. ''We're just trying to stay in this game and figure out what works this year.''

Los Angeles led by six at the half thanks to Ogwumike, who made her first eight shots. The Sparks scored 16 of the first 20 points in the second half to open up a double-digit lead. Riquna Williams, who is filling in for injured guard Essence Carson, spearheaded that burst and finished the game with 13 points.

The Sun (6-7) were down by 19 and got to 68-61 early in the fourth, but could get no closer as Los Angeles scored the next eight points.

Jasmine Thomas led Connecticut with 19 points. Jonquel Jones added 13 points and 17 rebounds.

Ogwumike scored 13 points in the first quarter as Los Angeles jumped out to a 10-point lead. The Sun trimmed their deficit to six behind the strong play of Thomas and Courtney Williams, who combined for 16 points in the opening half.

''We talked as a staff about how important the first quarter was going to be,'' Connecticut coach Curt Miller said. ''It was that way for confidence, but also for a little momentum, to feel good about playing them. We had a difficult first quarter. We can't get that one back.''

            RED CARPET

Parker took part in the inaugural NBA Awards show on Monday night in New York. She presented an award for best teammate.

''It was amazing,'' Parker said. ''I had a great time surrounded by greatness inspired me to come back and work. Russell Westbrook, what he did was unbelievable. He was an inspiration to everybody.''

            TIP-INS

Sparks: Ogwumike set the WNBA record when she went 12 for 12 last season from the field in a game against Dallas. She finished 9 for 13 against the Sun. ... Carson injured her groin against Phoenix and may join the team in Atlanta according to coach Brian Agler.

Sun: F Lynetta Kizer suited up for the first time since injuring her back in practice in early June. Kizer missed five games. She played 3 minutes and had two points.

            UP NEXT:

Sparks: Finish off a three-game road trip by visiting Atlanta on Friday.

            Sun: Host Seattle on Thursday.

              • Fever looks for repeat at Sky

The Indiana Fever return to the site of their only road win of the season on Wednesday.

They'll look to make it two straight victories away from home over the Chicago Sky in an 11:30 a.m. CT matchup at Allstate Arena.

The Fever's first win -- a 91-79 decision over the Sky on June 18 -- came as Tiffany Mitchell and Candice Dupree combined for 30 second-half points. Dupree closed with a team-high 18.

"Just a nice effort, especially in the second half when I felt like Chicago was comfortable," Fever coach Pokey Chatman said. "It was nice after halftime to regroup. We kept going to the huddle and knew we were getting good shots. We made them a little bit uncomfortable."

Indiana (6-7) is coming off an 84-73 home loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on a night when the team honored retired star Tamika Catchings by retiring her number.

Dupree topped the Fever with 14 points and four players scored in double figures. But Indiana couldn't contain Los Angeles' production in the second and third quarters that put the Sparks in control.

Indiana has won three of its last five. Chicago (3-10) has lost eight of its last 10 and remains winless in six games at home.

The Sky are coming off a 97-63 loss to Washington during which the host Mystics used a 31-7 second quarter to take a commanding lead and never looked back.

Three Chicago players scored in double figures in that game, led by Allie Quigley's 18 points. Quigley tops the team with 16.6 points per game and has scored in double figures each time out.

Sky coach Amber Stock still remains optimistic about Chicago's prospects as the rest of the season unfolds.

"Our man defensive principles are solid, we just need better execution," Stock said after the Washington loss. "Our offensive principles are solid, we just need more consistent execution. So big picture, if you look at the overall output of the hard work that these ladies are putting in, I feel really good about the games that lie ahead."

Chicago travels to winless San Antonio on Friday and then is idle until a July 8 home date with Minnesota.

Indiana is at Connecticut on Saturday and then is off until July 7 at Atlanta.

                    • Preview: Fever (6-7) at Sky (3-10)
                      Date: June 28, 2017 12:30 PM EDT

                          June 28, 2017

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) Candice Dupree scored 17 points, Briann January had 10 points and seven assists, and the Indiana Fever beat the Chicago Sky 82-75 on Wednesday.

Chicago has lost seven straight home games to begin the season, tying a franchise record.

Erica Wheeler made three 3-pointers and scored 13 points for Indiana (7-7). Tiffany Mitchell hit her first three free throws to break her own franchise record with 43 straight. The streak ended in the fourth quarter after missing her first free throw since May 17.

Jessica Breland scored 22 points on 11-of-16 shooting for Chicago (3-11). Cappie Pondexter added 13 points and Imani Boyette had her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out with 2:31 left in the fourth. Stefanie Dolson, averaging 12.8 points per game, did not play due to an illness.

Chicago outrebounded Indiana 48-25 but turned it over 17 times and only made one 3-pointer.

                              • Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

                                — Angels 3, Dodgers 2— Game ended when Dodgers’ catcher threw the ball into RF trying to throw batter out at first after a strikeout/wild pitch. Winning run scored from second.

                                — Giants 5, Colorado 3— Rockies have scored 23 runs, hit .206 during 8-game skid.

                                — Phillies 5, Mariners 4— Seattle’s bullpen blew lead in ninth inning.

                                — Nationals 8, Cubs 4— Chicago swung at 54 Strasburg pitches, missed 26 times.

                                — Diamondbacks’ SS Nick Ahmed broke a bone in his hand Tuesday night when he was hit on the hand with a pitch. Tough blow for a red-hot Arizona squad.

                                — Chase Anderson, Milwaukee’s best pitcher, strained his oblique while batting in the second inning last night. No bueno.

                                **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……..

                                13) James Dolan owns the Knicks and he also owns Cablevision; he fired Phil Jackson and has to eat $24M in salary. Cable TV customers in NYC and Long Island can expect their cable bills to go a little bit higher fairly soon. Someone has to pay for Dolan’s incompetence.

Now the question is this: Will the Knicks buy out Carmelo Anthony’s contract and let him walk for nothing (Houston? Cleveland?)

                                12) Speaking of the Rockets, they traded Patrick Beverly, Lou Williams and Sam Dekker, plus a #1 draft pick to the Clippers for Chris Paul. Paul and James Harden both ranked in the top 7 in the NBA last year in time of possession with the ball, so someone (Harden) is going to have to adjust to having the ball less.

                                11) Quote of the Day, part 2: Washington Nationals stole seven bases against the Cubs Tuesday night; Chicago catcher Miguel Montero wasn’t happy about it. He said this:

“That’s the reason they were running left and right today, because they [pitcher Jake Arrieta] were slow to the plate,. Simple as that. It’s a shame it’s my fault because I didn’t throw anyone out.

“It really sucked, because the stolen bases go on me. But when you really look at it, the pitcher doesn’t give me any time, so yeah, ‘Miggy can’t throw anyone out,’ but my pitchers don’t hold anyone on.”

Montero was DFA’d Wednesday, which means he basically got cut, unless they can find a trade partner in the next 10 days.

                                10) UCLA guard Bryce Alford will be on Golden State’s summer league team next week in Las Vegas. Summer league is great if you like the NBA— you can meet lot of people there, because everyone comes/goes out the same doors. I had great fun on my visits to the summer league.

                                9) Colorado Rockies pitcher Jeff Hoffman is 3-0, 1.67 in four road starts, 1-1, 8.22 in three home starts at Coors Field. He is doing really well in his rookie season.

Mr Hoffman is from Colonie, NY (just outside Albany), went to Shaker HS, which is in north Colonie— I live in south Colonie. Sam Perkins, the former NBA star, also went to Shaker High before moving on to play ball at North Carolina.

                                8) In extra innings at AT&T Park in San Francisco, when the seagulls are hovering over the field waiting for the game to end so they can swoop down into the bleachers and get their dinner, what happens if a fly ball hits one of the seagulls? Is it a live ball?

I asked on Twitter and it turns out if a batted ball hits a seagull, it is a live ball, much as if the ball hit an umpire. Seagulls are a part of the field, it turns out.

                                7) Major league umpire John Tumpane umped the plate in the Rays-Pirates game last night, but he got a very important save hours before the game even started.

Tumpane saved a woman’s life Wednesday; the woman was going to jump off the Roberto Clemente Bridge in Pittsburgh, but Tumpane, on his way back to his hotel from lunch, noticed her and talked her out of jumping.

He spent several minutes with the woman, 911 was called and the woman was taken away in an ambulance. Hope things work out well for her.

                                6) There is a ballpark in the AA Texas League that has a swimming pool in right-center field, kind of like the Diamondbacks’ ballpark, except this pool is elevated— takes a longer poke to hit the ball in this pool than the pool in Phoenix.

                                5) Quote of the Day, part 3:

“I’d see a quarterback and be like, ‘Dude is garbage, and I’m over here in the kitchen cooking turkey necks!?’ I hate to name-drop, but [Ryan] Fitzpatrick is still playing!? He leads the league in interceptions, and he’s still (bleep)ing getting paid? I mean, what the (bleep) is going on?”
                                Former NFL QB Vince Young

                                4) Baseball transactions:
                                — Reds put Brandon Finnegan (shoulder) on the DL, activated Austin Brice
                                — Royals recalled LF Jorge Soler from AAA.
                                — Giants put 3B Conor Gillaspie, P Mark Melancon on the DL, brought up 3B Jae-Gyun Hwang and P Dan Slania
                                — New York put DH Matt Holliday on DL, recalled 3B Miguel Andujar
                                — Detroit activated DH Victor Martinez, sent John Hicks down to AAA.
                                — Arizona put Nick Ahmed (hand) on DL, brought Ketel Marte up from AAA
                                — Mets put P Robert Gsellman (hamstring) on DL, brought Matt Reynolds up from AAA.
                                — Atlanta activated P Bartolo Colon off the DL, sent Jason Hursh to AAA.

                                3) Happy birthday to a pair of legends this week: NASCAR’s Richard Petty turned 80 years old, and comic genius Mel Brooks turned 91.

                                2) Chicago Cubs currently have 15 players on their active roster age 27 or younger; nine of Cubs’ 10 players who are 28+ are pitchers.

                                1) Was surprised to hear that when Sean McVay interviewed for the Rams’ coaching job, in his very first interview with the team, he spent two hours watching film with QB Jared Goff. I’m pretty sure that is highly unusual, for a coaching candidate to spend that much time with a player BEFORE he has the job.
