Preview: Mercury (3-2) at Sky (1-5)

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Diana Taurasi is closing in on yet another WNBA record as her Phoenix Mercury take on the Chicago Sky on Thursday at Allstate Arena.

Taurasi, a 13-year league veteran, needs just one made 3-pointer to pass Katie Smith as the WNBA's all-time leader. She currently shares the top spot with Smith with 906.

"I always talk about Katie (Smith) being one of my biggest heroes growing up, watching basketball, her work ethic," Taurasi told reporters after last Saturday's 107-65 victory over Dallas. "I got to share the court with her at the Olympics. To be tied with her right now is kind of cool. If we could just say end it there and we both be on top we would both be pretty happy with that."

The Mercury (3-2) have won three of their last four entering the season's first meeting with Chicago. The Sky (1-5) are stuck at the bottom of the WNBA Eastern Conference and struggling through a three -game losing streak.

Taurasi, who has 7,362 career points, also needs just 19 to pass Tamika Catching for second all-time in league scoring and is just 127 from taking the top spot held by Tina Thompson.

Taurasi, 34, has played on three WNBA championship teams and owns four Olympic gold medals. She is the first player in league history with 7,000 career points, 1,500 career assists and 1,500 career rebounds.

She currently is second in Phoenix scoring, averaging 12.8 points per game. Brittney Griner leads with 20.2 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

Chicago continues to try to find its footing under Amber Stock, its new coach and general manager. She said Sky players remain engaged despite a frustrating start.

"All 12 ladies are extremely competitive," Stock said. "When you are playing any professional sport, the competitiveness is all channeled into focus and drive. ... When you get into this type of predicament, you channel that energy into focus, drive and application on doing the things and making the adjustments that need to be made."

Their lone win was a 75-71 decision on May 21 at Atlanta, and they then suffered back-to-back losses to Washington and a 97-79 setback to previously winless Connecticut last Sunday.

Forward Tamera Young leads the Sky with a 15.2 points-per-game average, good for 14th in the league.

Guard Cappie Pondexter is 14th in WNBA scoring with a 14.7 point-per-game average. She is 15th all-time in the WNBA for career minutes with at 11,665 minutes and counting.

Chicago recently had reinforcements arrive in guards Allie Quigley and Courtney Vandersloot, who returned earlier this month from European play.

Phoenix continues a three-game road trip on Sunday at the New York Liberty and a June 7 game at Indiana. Next up for Chicago are road games at Los Angeles (June 6) and San Antonio (June 10).

Taurasi's 8 3s break WNBA career record

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) Diana Taurasi tied a career high with eight 3-pointers and broke a tie for the WNBA's career record, leading the Phoenix Mercury to a 99-91 victory over the Chicago Sky on Thursday night.

Taurasi entered the game tied with Katie Smith with 906 3-pointers, and broke the mark early in the first quarter.

Taurasi was 9 of 15 from the field, with only one 2-point shot, and scored 37 points to move into second place on the league's career scoring list. It was her highest points total since 2010.

Brittney Griner added 28 points and 13 rebounds for Phoenix (4-2), and Leilani Mitchell scored 14 points as the trio combined to score 79 points. They had 42 of the Mercury's 50 points in the first half.

Chicago had an 87-85 lead midway through the fourth quarter, but Taurasi scored eight points on the next three Phoenix possessions to make it 93-87. The Sky went scoreless for over four minutes down the stretch.

Stefanie Dolson made her first six 3-pointers and scored a career-high 21 points for Chicago (1-6). Allie Quigley added 18 points, and Cappie Pondexter had 10 points and eight assists.

It was a high scoring first quarter as Pondexter's layup at the buzzer gave Chicago a 30-28 lead. The Sky hit their first seven shots, and Phoenix's opening 21 points all came from Taurasi and Griner.

13) Nike’s Phil Knight turns 80 years old this year; to commemorate this, there is a 16-team college hoop event (actually two 8-team tournaments) in Portland Thanksgiving weekend, with lot of heavy hitters in the field. Here are the first-round games:

North Carolina-Portland, Arkansas-Oklahoma,
Georgetown-Michigan State, UConn-Oregon

Duke-Portland State, Butler-Texas
Florida-Stanford, Gonzaga-Ohio State

This is a one-time event, being staged to celebrate Phil Knight’s 80th birthday.

12) There will also be a solid mid-major tournament in the Bahamas Nov 17-19, with Bradley, Coastal Carolina, Duquesne, Iona, No Kentucky, Tex-San Antonio, Vermont, Weber State.

Lot of solid mid-major teams here; this’ll be a good tournament.

11) There have been two major league games this season where both starting pitchers gave up 10+ hits; surprising that Sale/Quintana Tuesday nite was one of them (other one was a Nova-Colon matchup).

10) Bryce Harper’s suspension was reduced to three games, Hunter Strickland got six games but the big loser in the Nats-Giants fracas Monday was Washington’s Michael Morse, who went on the 7-day DL with a concussion sustained in the scuffle.

9) Mike Trout’s thumb injury is same one the Clippers’ Chris Paul had; Trout talked with Paul before his surgery this week.

Trout had surgery on his left thumb Wednesday, but was at the ballpark that night and came out in the dugout for each of Albert Pujols’ at-bats, in case Pujols hit his 600th home run.

8) Weird play in the Brewers-Mets game Thursday; Milwaukee had bases loaded with one out and Eric Sogard up. Sogard hits a foul pop by the Brewers’ dugout; the bat boy grabs his chair, but runs into the Mets’ 3B and the ball drops.

The home plate umpire calls the batter out, then the umps huddled and the call was reversed, which sent Terry Collins off the edge- he was ejected, but then Sogard hit into a double play, so the Mets benefitted from the changed call.

7) Last time the National League won the season series against the American League was 2003, and they ain’t gonna win it this year, either.

6) Golden State 113, Cleveland 91— Warriors had four turnovers, Cleveland had 20. LeSean McCoy of the Buffalo Bills bet $200,000 on Golden State to win the series- he gets $262,500 back if the Warriors win the championship. He made the wager at Planet Hollywood in Vegas.

I’m sure the NFL was thrilled to see the picture of his $200K ticket on Twitter.

5) Someone on Twitter captured Mr Met giving a fan the finger as he ran down the stadium tunnel after the Mets’ 7-1 home loss to Milwaukee Wednesday nite. Was that kind of a night.

Problem is, Mr Met can’t flash his middle finger, since he has only four fingers on each hand- there is no middle finger. If you’re an aficionado of loopholes, this is a good one for Mr Met’s attorneys, if the feisty mascot sues to get its job back.

No truth to the rumor that Kathy Griffin has applied to be the new Mr Met.

4) ESPN’s Mark Adams posted a list of each Division I basketball budget last year on Facebook; somehow he left Siena’s out, but all the other ones are there.

Kentucky’s basketball budget last year was $18,910,412; next highest in the SEC was Texas A&M, at $9,301,170. Gonzaga got to the Final Four with a budget of $7,261,657.

3) Cincinnati Reds have scored in the first inning in each of their last six games; they went 2-4 in those games.

There were 1,060 home runs hit in May, 2nd-most in any month ever, behind May 2000. Of the 1,060 homers last month, 630 of them were solo blasts; the other 430 came with men on, including 16 grand slams.

2) Los Angeles Angels have scored two runs in six home games this year; with their pitching, you’d figure that would be bad news, but they won five of the six games. Go figure.

1) Oakland A’s have already used 11 batters in the #2 spot this year. In 53 games. Those 11 players have combined to hit .175 while batting in the 2-spot. Oy.

Preview: Wings (3-2) at Liberty (2-3)

The New York Liberty were already playing short-handed due to the torn Achilles point guard Brittany Boyd sustained in the second game of the season.

Now they will spend the next few weeks dealing with another significant injury, starting with Friday's home game against the Dallas Wings at Madison Square Garden.

While Boyd is recovering from a serious injury, Epiphanny Prince and Kia Vaughn are going to be away from the team fulfilling overseas commitments.

Prince, who averages 15.8 points per game and was starting at point guard after Boyd's injury, will be playing for Russia in the EuroBasket Tournament qualifier that runs from June 16-25. Vaughn averages 6.4 points and four rebounds and is playing for host Czech Republic in the event.

By the time the tournament ends, the Liberty (2-3) will be through their 11th game. The first contest after the conclusion of the tournament is June 29 at Washington.

New York hopes to stay afloat by producing better showings down the stretch in games. In Tuesday's 90-75 home loss to the Los Angeles Sparks, the Liberty gave up the first 11 points of the fourth quarter immediately after scoring the final eight points of the third.

"We have to dig deep and work harder and (be) smarter," New York coach Bill Laimbeer said of playing short-handed. "We're going to take our lumps, I assume. It's going to be tough. But we can win some games."

To avoid fourth quarters going awry, the Liberty might need more from leading scorer Tina Charles. Charles scored 25 points against the Sparks, but only six of those were after halftime.

Charles averages 18.6 points but in her last two fourth quarters, she has totaled six points.

The Liberty will have a new player in their attempt to fill the absences as they re-signed rookie guard Lindsay Allen. Allen was New York's second-round pick out of Notre Dame but was waived after three preseason games.

Dallas is 3-2 after cruising to an 89-62 home over the Indiana Fever on Tuesday and now faces a significant stretch. After facing New York and Indiana in back-to-back games, Dallas faces Washington, Los Angeles and undefeated Minnesota.

The blowout win occurred three days after a 107-65 loss at Phoenix.

Karima-Christmas Kelly scored a career-high 27 points before sitting out of the fourth quarter. She made 10 of 14 shots after going 2-of-10 at Phoenix.

"Everyone contributed, especially in front of our fans," Dallas guard Skylar Diggins-Smith said. "We are happy with the win obviously. Karima is the gas that runs our car."

The Wings entered the game last in the league at 3-point shooting with a 20.6 percent mark. Dallas made 6-of-14 from long range and improved the league's worst 3-point shooting percentage to 24.7.

Rookie Allisha Gray, who was named WNBA Rookie of the Month for May, added 14 points Tuesday and is averaging 13 points after helping South Carolina to a national championship. She is third on the team in scoring behind Christmas-Kelly and Diggins-Smith.

Charles lifts Liberty to win over Wings
June 2, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) With New York down a few players for the next few weeks, Tina Charles knew she'd have to raise her game.

Charles scored a career-high 36 points and Shavonte Zellous added 27 to lead the Liberty to a 93-89 win Friday night.

''I came out with a mentality that we were without two key players and I had to step up offensively,'' Charles said.

She also got a lot of help. Zellous had a season-high, Kiah Stokes added 13 points and a career-best 15 rebounds.

''I think we're at our best when everyone's involved when everyone's flowing,'' said Charles. ''Everyone can leave the arena feeling good about themselves.''

New York (3-3) was missing Epiphanny Prince and Kia Vaughn, who are both playing in the EuroBasket tournament this month. Zellous picked up the scoring in their absence. She had just 22 points total in the team's first five games. She surpassed that mark early in the fourth quarter.

''I was being aggressive,'' Zellous said. ''The first couple games I was a bit hesitant to be myself.''

Her 3-pointer gave New York an eight-point lead midway through the final period. The advantage increased to 87-78 on Charles' 3-pointer that gave her a scoring high. Dallas cut it to 87-84 with a minute left. After two free throws by Zellous extended the lead to five, Kaela Davis converted a three-point play.

Dallas had a few chances to tie in the final 30 seconds, but Charles and Sugar Rodgers converted four free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the win.

''We left a lot of things on the boards, rebounding we gave them a lot of second opportunities,'' Dallas coach Fred Williams said. ''When it came down to it, it came down to rebounding and boxing out.''

New York outrebounded Dallas 44-28.

Skylar Diggins scored 19 points and Theresa Plaisance added 18 to lead Dallas (3-3).

Bria Hartley got the start and had her best game of the young season since coming to the Liberty in a trade in the offseason. She had six points in the first six minutes and finished with 10.

Despite the strong first half by Hartley and Zellous, New York trailed 50-45 at the break.

TIP-INS:

Dallas: The Wings are playing short-handed as Courtney Paris is out for six-to-eight weeks with a knee injury and Aerial Powers is still recovering from a hip injury that has sidelined her this season so far.

New York: Charles' previous best of 32 points came against Connecticut last season.

Wings try to woo Cambage back to WNBA
June 2, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) The Dallas Wings are doing their best to woo Australian center Liz Cambage to return to the WNBA.

She visited Dallas this week while on vacation and now is in New York, coincidently, as the Wings played the Liberty on Friday night.

Coach Fred Williams enjoyed spending time with Cambage in Dallas, but didn't know when and if she would return to the team, which still owns her rights after drafting the 6-foot-8 star in 2011 with the No. 2 overall pick.

''It's up to her,'' Williams said. ''We haven't talked about her coming this year. I'm just happy to see her and see what's going on.''

Cambage's first stop on her vacation was Dallas to see Australian teammate Erin Phillips, who works for the Wings now after retiring in May.

''Liz and I are really close,'' Phillips said. ''She's here in New York, we're having lunch again. When you're a foreigner you want to have a piece of home when you go overseas and hopefully she sees that in me.''

The Wings took Cambage on a tour of AT&T Stadium in Dallas, with the team logo and "Welcome to Dallas Liz" on the 25,000-square foot video board. She took in the team's home game Tuesday night in a luxury suite.

''Obviously, when I see Liz I mention the fact that she should play for Dallas someday,'' Phillips said. ''I'm confident she will. When she does I'm not sure. This is a fantastic organization and she knows that. The door will always be open and I think when she's ready she'll make a great impact on this team and this league. I'm always encouraging her from that standpoint.''

Cambage last played for the team when it was in Tulsa in 2013. She averaged 16.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.4 blocks.

''A player of her stature would help any organization,'' Williams said. ''I have a good repartee with her. I didn't have a chance to talk with her in person until she came with the Australian Olympic team to play at Madison Square Garden last summer. I think her being around visiting, having a feel for where the site is as opposed to being in Tulsa. She likes the market, a lot of things going on. There's a lot of smiles.''

Cambage told The Associated Press at the Olympics last summer that she was definitely interested in playing in the WNBA again at some point, but her top priority was Australia's national team.

The Wings certainly could use her with center Courtney Paris out for the next six to eight weeks with a knee injury. Dallas was outrebounded by New York 44-28 on Friday night in a 93-89 loss.

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

13) Davidson College is in the NCAA baseball tournament for the first time in 115 years; they upset North Carolina on Friday. Apparently their best pitcher is a 5-10 kid named Durin O’Linger who is a very good pitcher but not a pro prospect— great student, going to go to pharmacy school next. Terrific story.

Mr O’Linger threw 140 pitches in a game on May 24, then threw 51 more two days later. On the 27th, he threw 45 more pitches, then threw 92 against the Tar Heels yesterday.

All of this ignited a small firestorm on Twitter ignited by ESPN’s Keith Law, who went after the Davidson coach for abusing the kid’s arm. Couple of his ex-teammates objected strongly to that. It is an interesting debate; the kid will never play pro baseball, and he wants to make history for his school, with his friends. It is the kid’s choice, yes?

12) Westgate Casino in Las Vegas has a $1,500 NFL SuperContest every year; you pick five NFL games a week, and there are prizes— first place has been as much as $900,000 in the past.

This year, they’re adding a new angle; a separate $5,000 “Gold” SuperContest where there is only one winner— curious to see how many people sign up for that event.

11) From ESPN: Clayton Kershaw has been the betting favorite in his last 150 starts; next longest active streak is Carlos Carrasco of Cleveland (29).

10) 14 college freshmen were drafted by NBA teams last June; 20 are expected to be selected this year.

9) Lebron James is in his 8th NBA Final; his team has been underdog in six of those eight.

8) Cleveland Cavaliers are still paying former head coach Mike Brown, who is the interim head coach of the Warriors right now.

7) Mets’ catcher Travis d’Arnaud says he uses a different bat every day, often times one that belongs to a teammate. Mets’ TV guy Keith Hernandez said he never heard of that before.

Best wishes to Hernandez by the way; he had knee replacement surgery Friday.

6) Cubs had bases loaded, one out in 6th inning Friday and they pinch-hit for Kyle Schwarber. Baseball is a tough game. Schwarber is hitting .139 vs lefties this season.

5) Marlins’ 1B Justin Bour stole his first career base Thursday, in his 310th career game.

4) Las Vegas Golden Knights have been posted at 200-1 to win the Stanley Cup next season; they don’t have any players yet- they’re an expansion team. Who would bet on them?

3) Quincy McKnight averaged 18.9 pts/game at Sacred Heart last year but will transfer to Seton Hall, as big $$$ schools continue to poach good players from low D-I programs. McKnight will sit next year, then have two years left to play.

2) If you don’t think medicine and science are bleeping amazing, consider this; Hall of Famer Rod Carew was on TV during the Twins-Angels game Thursday night. He had both a heart transplant and a kidney transplant earlier this year, now says he feels good. Great to hear!!!

1) Kansas State WR Corey Sutton got a release from his scholarship, can go anywhere he likes now; K-State had originally blocked his transfer, but it was becoming a PR debacle so the school relented and he is gone.
